Sean Hannity Scores First Interview with New Speaker of the House

0

Fox News host Sean Hannity has secured the first televised interview with the new Speaker of the House, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Hannity will welcome the new Speaker to his primetime program on Thursday. The interview will air live from the House chamber in Washington D.C.

The Fox News host is expected to question Rep. Johnson on what his agenda will be in his newly elected position.

Johnson was selected after House Republicans spent 22 days deciding on a replacement for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted earlier this month.

Hannity and producers of his program came under fire from both politicians and media figures for an email circulating that questioned Congressional Republicans on why they were refusing to support Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the Speakership.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes argued that Hannity was attempting to “bully” members of Congress, adding “The message here is that Sean Hannity and Fox News will publicly punish you if you cross the leader of our party and his chosen speaker.”

Rich Zeoli: MSNBC Hypocritical For Calling New Speaker ‘Election Denier’

0

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was voted the new Speaker of the House Wednesday. The move wasn’t celebrated by all, with MSNBC hosts and analysts trashing the move. 1210 WPHT host Rich Zeoli argued that encapsulation was hypocritical.

During The Rich Zeoli Show Wednesday, the host argued that the network never gave the same distinction to former Speaker of the House, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who called the 2016 election “illegitimate” for Russia’s involvement in electing Donald Trump.

“He’s an election denier. He was Speaker of the House. So please, spare me,” Zeoli said. “They always say ‘In life, judge a person by the quality of the enemies that they have as much as the quality of the friends that they have’. And I think it’s a good thing in life. So the fact that the media already hates Mike Johnson and they’re coming after him should tell you a lot about our new speaker.

“MSNBC spent three years — three years — denying the 2016 election. Now, they’re losing their minds about Congressman Mike Johnson, now Speaker Mike Johnson, who also expressed doubts about the 2020 election. So again, if you express doubts about 2016, because of Russia, that’s fine. You express doubts about 2020? Then you’re unfit to serve, and should probably be in prison which is what they’re trying to do with Donald Trump.”

NLCS Game 7 Attains Record Ratings on TBS

0

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Game 7 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks drew 9.1 million total viewers across TBS, truTV and Max, marking the most-watched MLB Postseason game on the network in eight years. The Diamondbacks defeated the Phillies 4-2 to take the best-of-seven penultimate round and advance to the World Series, where the team will face the Texas Rangers for a chance to hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy. This matchup officially finishes as the seventh most-watched baseball program to ever air on TBS as it concludes the 2023 campaign of games.

The win-or-go-home NLCS showdown finished as the highest-rated league championship series game in the Phoenix market over the last 16 years. In Philadelphia, Game 7 was the highest-rated LCS broadcast in 13 years, and viewership for the series as a whole was up 17% year-over-year across all markets.

An average of 5.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the proceedings, which included stellar performances by Phillies sluggers Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. Yet the Diamondbacks’ dynamic offense, led by Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Alek Thomas, came through in clutch moments and sent the franchise to its first World Series since 2001.

Audience growth in key demographics drove total viewership, highlighted by a 14% rise in the P18-49 cohort. Furthermore, both the P18-34 and P25-54 demographics were up 13%, respectively, consistent with augmented interest concurrent with rule changes meant to expedite pace of play and boost offensive output.

Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, with its baseball broadcasts completed for the season, is now within its slate of games for the NBA and NHL. The company is offering the B/R Sports Add-On through its Max direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming platform, available to all subscribers pro bono through Feb. 29. After that date, the price rises to $9.99 per month, which includes games in the aforementioned leagues, along with NCAA March Madness for men’s basketball, U.S. Soccer events and more.

Hugh Hewitt, Lester Holt, Kristen Welker to Moderate Next Republican Presidential Debate

0

Salem Radio Network and NBC News are partnering for the next Republican Presidential Primary Debate, and the list of moderators has been released, with the radio network’s Hugh Hewitt getting a place at the desk.

Hewitt will be on hand alongside NBC News anchor Lester Holt and new Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker. Holt made the announcement of the network’s plans during NBC Nightly News Wednesday.

The event will be held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and will start at 8 PM ET on Wednesday, November 8th.

Holt moderated the first Presidential primary in the 2020 election season in June 2019, while also moderating a debate from Las Vegas in 2020.

Welker moderated the final Presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden in October 2020. She also moderated a Democratic Presidential primary debate in November 2019.

Despite his status as a conservative radio host, Hugh Hewitt also has television debate moderating experience. In both 2015 and 2016, the Salem Radio Network host served on a panel of moderators for Republican primary debates that aired on CNN.

The November debate will be the first Republican Presidential Primary event to air on a network other than Fox News or Fox Business Network.

Jenna Ellis to Continue Salem Podcast Network Show After Guilty Plea in Trump Case

0

Jenna Ellis, the former attorney for former President Donald Trump, has pled guilty to a felony charge of aiding and abetting false statements in the Georgia case against the 45th President.

Ellis has hosted The Jenna Ellis Show for Salem Podcast Network since August 2021. The podcast network will continue releasing episodes of the show despite the host being sentenced to five years probation and paying $5,000 in restitution.

Trump’s former attorney pled guilty on Tuesday, and continued to release episodes since entering the plea.

While entering her plea, Ellis said “If I knew then what I knew now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. I look back on this experience with deep remorse,” while fighting back tears.

According to Chartable.com, the podcast hosted by the former attorney is currently the #127th most-listened-to News Commentary podcast in the United States.

The Messenger: We’re ‘Doing Extraordinarily Well’, Denies Reports of Financial Ruin

0

The Messenger, a news startup owned by billionaire Jimmy Finklestein, has reportedly run out of cash just five months after its launch.

According to The New York Post, despite hiring a team of experienced editors and reporters, the online site has struggled to attract visitors and establish itself financially.

The company’s president, Richard Beckman, has privately informed journalists that the site is out of money, causing anxiety among the staff. As a result, employees are pushing to unionize the newsroom and requesting a town hall meeting with management to address their concerns.

Aside from financial worries, employees are concerned about the outlet’s recent partnership with an artificial intelligence firm and secrecy about the site’s traffic.

A company spokesperson did not comment specifically on The Daily Beast’s story but said The Messenger is still growing its team, and its traffic is “through the roof”. However, the spokesperson did not provide traffic figures.

“The Messenger is doing extraordinarily well. We are breaking important stories, launching new verticals, and adding people to the team,” the representative told The Post.

“We are building one of the next great media companies in the US, and we couldn’t be more excited about the future of the Company.”

According to Nieman Lab’s analysis of Similarweb’s external traffic, The Messenger ranks 195th among US news sites, similar to local Texas news stations. However, there are concerns among employees regarding the leadership and strategy of the media company.

Editor-in-chief Dan Wakeford is not frequently present in the newsroom, and the involvement of Finklestein, a former part-owner of The Hollywood Reporter and The Hill, who provided $50 million to fund the venture, is causing unease among the staff.

Fred Toucher Signs Contract Extension with 98.5 The Sports Hub

0

98.5 The Sports Hub has signed Fred Toucher to a contract extension. The new agreement will keep Toucher in morning drive with the Boston sports radio station according to a Beasley Media Group press release.

“I am thrilled to be able to work with my Beasley family over the coming years,” Toucher said in a statement. “I will continue my record of immense competence and brilliance.”

Toucher has been at The Sports Hub since it launched in 2009. He has been co-hosting with Rich Shertenlieb in Boston since 2006. The duo remained on top in the market for morning drive in this summer’s ratings book despite Toucher’s absences from the program earlier this year due to a cancer scare and mental health issues.

“We are thrilled that Sports Hub listeners will be able to hear Fred’s unique brand of humor each weekday morning for years to come,” Beasley vice president and market manager Mary Menna said.

Rick Radzik echoed the sentiments of Menna in that locking Toucher into a deal for the foreseeable future is a net positive.

“Fred has been entertaining Sports Hub listeners each morning since 2009 with his compelling viewpoints and opinions on a wide range of topics,” he said. “We are very pleased that he will continue on with us for years to come.”

While it’s clear that Toucher will continue on in morning drive for 98.5 The Sports Hub, it’s still sort of foggy what Shertenlieb’s future holds. The press release announcing Toucher’s extension didn’t contain any mention of Shertenlieb or Toucher and Rich.

The Boston Globe this week wrote that while Fred Toucher is locked into a contract extension, Rich Shertenlieb is not. It was also mentioned that Shertenlieb changed the handle for the Toucher and Rich Twitter/X account this week, potentially signaling the end of the tandem’s run together.

John Gambadoro: Mad Dog Should Retire Because He’s Past His Prime

0

SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio host Chris “Mad Dog” Russo has been under pressure the last 36 hours to make good on his promise to retire if the Arizona Diamondbacks successfully came back to win the NLCS.

Well, the Diamondbacks are on the way to the World Series, and while Mad Dog backtracked on his general retirement statement, Arizona Sports host John Gambadoro on Wednesday said a promise is a promise.

Russo clarified ahead of Game 7 on Tuesday that when he said retirement, he said he would retire from his SiriusXM show and wouldn’t give up his role on First Take and as host of High Heat on MLB Network. Mad Dog joined Howard Stern Wednesday morning, and even Stern said Russo couldn’t back out of a promise.

“You gotta do something that the audience says, ‘I’m being serious now,'” Stern said. Because you made a statement ‘I’m gonna retire.'”

Howard proposed as an alternative that Mad Dog don a bikini and walk the streets of Manhattan as punishment. But Gambadoro felt like it would probably be for the best if Russo sailed off into the sunset.

“Last night I was leaning towards you should retire. You’ve had a great career,” Gambadoro said on Burns & Gambo. “But you know what? Screw it. You should retire.”

“I saw that you invited him on our show,” responded co-host Dave Burns. “Shocking that he chose Howard Stern’s show over ours. I’m blown away by that.”

Gambo stood firm on the assertion that Mad Dog should hang it up, joking that Russo is over the hill.

“You’re old, you’re way past your prime, the 90s was a long time ago,” he said. “I agree with our listeners. You should just retire. Be a man of your word and retire.”

Talk Radio Needs to Reimagine Call Screening

0

We are talk radio. It is kind of our thing. Yet, I hear lots of poorly screened calls getting on the air.

Here are my rules to getting good calls and screening them effectively:

If you are asking people to call, you better be getting to the calls quickly. There is a good reason to do it. Calls allow you to say your name and the station call letters often. “Hi John, you are on the Bob Smith show on WXXX.” The longer a call is on hold, the more likely it can go sideways. Some hosts are fantastic with wacky callers and some hosts come across as jerks.  So, if you are giving the number out and people are calling into the show, put them on the air ASAP.

There is another reason for this: It allows real people to know that this is not some long and arduous process. Quick to the calls also respects your listeners. I was talking to a host recently who was hell-bent on giving a long monologue before getting to calls. I asked him a simple question: Are you asking for their calls? He said, “Yes.”

If you asked someone over to your home for dinner, would you make them wait outside until dinner is ready? Why not? You would invite them in and finish the meal preparation.

Good callers can add a great deal to your show. Callers can allow you to expand on your point in an unanticipated way. It allows you to sound smarter.

We have all had or heard bad calls get on the air. There are a couple of reasons why this happens:

  1. Poor Screening
  2. Caller thinks of different things to discuss.
  3. Long hold times.

If the producer thinks that the caller sucks, they should never be put on hold. The producer should thank the caller for his question and tell him that another caller has a similar opinion.  Ok, it’s a lie. The producer can also coach the caller. “Hey John, can I help you make your point even better?” Tell the caller what they are saying.

Also, if the callers are on hold during the break, give each caller an estimated time to being a star on the show. “Hey John, you are five minutes away.” You are telling the host this.

Keep the caller on point. Tell the host to bang thru the calls. Taking three calls back-to-back makes your show sound bigger. Another thing, once the caller makes their point, move on to the next call. When a caller is on the air too long, they will repeat their point. If a caller starts to do that, they have been on the air for too long. Every call is different, but this is more typical than not.

Also, tell the caller to turn off their radio. Telling the caller to turn the radio down creates the idea that they can listen on the radio as they go about their basic tasks. You want that caller totally focused on show business.

Good callers can go off the rails. Keep them on point. Make sure that the host knows the basic point of the call. Some hosts do better with more or less information on the phone system software. Once that call gets on the air, the host needs to manage it.

Long hold times are the worst for many reasons. The good callers won’t wait. They have jobs, families, and errands to complete. The crappy callers will wait all day. These people are not typical listeners.

Be careful of the dominant regular caller. These people wish that they were talk show hosts and will figure out ways to steer the conversation away from the host’s goals with the topic.  Callers are there to make the host look good. That is it. Regulars who are bad callers are the bane of our format. I generally like the once-a-week rule. Keep it fresh. If listeners are more interested in things that a regular caller says, you are in trouble.

Take the best call first. If you have three people on hold and one is a star, get that caller on the show first. It can make the show.

Callers are important for many reasons. It allows the impression that your show is really popular. That you really value your listeners. Imagine making your show sound big. You are discussing a proposal to raise property taxes and the audience is more pissed about it than you are. It creates the impression that you are listening to them and that their opinions are important. Callers can also come up with things that you have not considered. This can help you expound on your point and reference the great point from John in Brooklyn Park.

Allowing listeners on the air does provide a certain risk. It can even be dangerous, exciting, and fun. Your show is an entertainment option for your listeners. Don’t ever forget that this is show business. Callers allow you to make your show a listener-focused experience.
