Mike Greenberg Has Completely Reinvented Himself

0

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg is not only an iconic multimedia personality who has distinguished himself with class and intelligent conversation, he is an absolute show saver, and perhaps even a network saver.

Greenberg currently is the host and maestro of ESPN’s morning program Get Up. The show began in 2018 with Greenberg alongside Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose as cohosts. As an aside, I like Beadle a lot as an on-air personality. She is daring, entertaining, and glib.

Still, the pairing of Greenberg and Beadle was an unmitigated disaster. There was zero chemistry, zero fun, and zero reason to watch what was supposed to become an anchor show for ESPN. Instead, it dropped like an anchor.

As with any failing show in television, the tinkering began. Beadle left the program and ESPN shuffled Rose, Laura Rutledge, and others alongside Greenberg. What they finally realized is that the eminently talented and savvy Greenberg needs no cohost. Check the resume.

The Northwestern grad also hosted NBA Countdown for ESPN and ABC. With Greenberg, Stephen A. Smith, and Michael Wilbon, that program rivaled the standard of NBA studio shows, Inside the NBA, with Ernie Johnson, Jr., Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Greenberg also hosts his own program, Greeny, on ESPN Radio, a place he called home for almost two decades on Mike & Mike with Mike Golic. That program became the stuff of radio legend with both Greenberg and Golic inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2016 and the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2018.

Greenberg joined ESPN in September 1996 as an anchor for the launch of ESPNEWS. He later anchored SportsCenter for many years. The dude even has three New York Times best-selling books: Why My Wife Thinks I’m an Idiot, Mike & Mike’s Rules for Sports and Life, and All You Could Ask For.

In sports, you put the ball in the hands of your best players. Same for media. Over the past year especially, Greenberg has taken Get Up to new levels of entertainment and information. More than this, however, he has actually changed his longstanding personality and on-air persona.

Let’s face it, in most of his work, Greenberg has been the straight man. He certainly was that for the vociferous Golic. Greenberg, while humorous, smart, and always prepared, has embraced the shirt and tie, buttoned down, conservative, and preppy image. Staid, in control, proper – these have been the character hallmarks of Greenberg.

Give Get Up a watch and you’ll see something completely different, and by the way, wonderful. There is a new Mike Greenberg. He has traded in his tie for an open collar and beard. He regularly wears an Aaron Rodgers jersey on air, unabashedly showing his longtime fan dedication to his beloved New York Jets.

He moderates segments where mini NFL helmets are smashed. Heck, he even dances on stage with co-host Harry Douglas. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not your father’s Mike Greenberg.

Some have looked at Greenberg‘s transformation as selling out or acquiescing to ratings and image consultants. I see it as Mike Greenberg finally having some fun.

He is letting his finely coiffed hair down, playing up his love of sports to the hilt, and enjoying being the ringleader with a host of guests including Dan Orlovsky, Marcus Spears, Douglas, Domonique Foxworth, Ryan Clark, Jeff Saturday, Damien Woody, Kimberley Martin, Dan Graziano, Monica McNutt, and others.

All of these guests play off the veteran star Greenberg providing insightful interaction and interjections. Perhaps the most entertaining part of Greenberg‘s repertoire is his penchant for drama.

He absolutely loves juicy headlines, deep plots, ongoing storylines, possible trades, crucial games, and key matchups. You can hear it in his voice. He sets the tone and the backdrop for the most important news and events across all sports.

The October 25, 2023 edition of Get Up was a great example of Greenberg’s zest and depth. He opened the show with dramatic highlights of the Diamondbacks-Phillies NLCS Game 7. With basketball and football dominating the discussion on most national sports talk shows, it was great to see Get Up actually lead with baseball.

Greenberg then seamlessly segued to highlights of the Lakers/Nuggets game. With great aplomb, he left space in his highlight read for McNutt to jump in and deliver her commentary. After the highlights, Greenberg led a terrific discussion on the poor performance of LA’s Anthony Davis with Brian Windhorst and McNutt.

In the show’s “What We’ve Learned” segment, Greenberg talked about the wide-open nature of the NFL with Foxworth, Spears, and Saturday. While the panelists all agreed that several teams could win the Super Bowl this year, Greenberg took the stance that the Chiefs remain the team to beat.

Subsequently, in the “One Call Away” segment, Greenberg did an expert job leading Spears and Foxworth in a discussion about which team should be calling the Giants about trading for Saquon Barkley.

This is the true essence of Greenberg. In the first 20 minutes of the program, he showed his expertise and knowledge in baseball, basketball, and football. This is about his experience, time, and work over the years.

There are some marvelous talents in sports television today who are extremely limited in their scope of knowledge. Charles Barkley knows hoops. Barry Melrose knows pucks. Pedro Martinez knows pitching. On the contrary, Mike Greenberg knows everything.

The best part of the current-day Greenberg is that he’s having fun. You can see it in his face, his smile, and his actions. He’s excited about the show, and that rubs off on the viewers. In a segment about the University of Michigan sign-stealing allegations, Greenberg introduced a quote from Deion Sanders who said that stealing signs in football doesn’t matter.

After the clip, Mike Greenberg disagreed with Sanders saying to Foxworth that it has to make a difference if a defense knows what type of play is coming. Greenberg‘s excellence and energy has changed Get Up from a run-of-the-mill sports highlight show into a rapid-fire, pick-a-topic, and fire-away sports cavalcade.

His quick wit and ability to move the conversation forward is truly unmatched. In a segment about Aaron Rodgers potentially coming back from his injury, Greenberg once again broke free from the binds of objectivity and was visibly excited, almost giddy at the prospects. With great glee, bellowed, “I have three words for you: He has risen!”

The “Week 8 Watch” segment took a quick look at the upcoming NFL games. In these types of fast-paced segments, Greenberg’s ability to move the program along without taking a breath is surpassed only by NFL RedZone’s Scott Hanson who, every Sunday, inhales at 1:00 PM and doesn’t exhale until 7:30 PM.

Did you ever think that the nerdy Greenberg would be doing a segment called “Night Club”? Well, this version of the Hall of Fame broadcaster is doing just that. He happily stepped aside as Spears went through highlights of NFL games.

No one gives space and air to his guests like Greenberg. He realizes that being a great host isn’t always about what you say, it’s what you don’t say. What we are seeing in full view is the true reincarnation of a sports talk marvel.

Mike Greenberg has changed his approach and demeanor, and in doing so, has given all of us a reason to “get up” and watch the transformation unfold.

Why Sports Radio Advertising Works at Christmas

0

At this time of year, annually, sports radio salespeople hear all about why they will be left off the Christmas buy. Men don’t shop — we are told — and women buy, buy, and buy. Not so fast, my friend!

Men, and men who listen to sports radio, have emerged as a significant and influential segment in holiday shopping. And one worth targeting, especially the last two weeks before Christmas.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), men, on average, spent $699 on holiday gifts in 2020, compared to women’s $593. Men need to buy for all the women in their lives and don’t spend as much time looking for the least expensive perfect gift. Men are active and generous in their gift-giving. The last two weeks leading up to Christmas is a shopping frenzy, and that’s where men stand out.

According to Statista’s data, 25% of men plan to finish their holiday shopping on Christmas Eve, compared to 16% of women. So assemble an aggressive 12/11/23-12/24/23 schedule, and let’s sell!

This behavior creates a unique opportunity for businesses to capture the attention of those who need to make swift purchase decisions. Here are some ideas on what and who to sell to:

Tech Enthusiasts and Electronics Lovers: Electronic devices such as smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart speakers are among the top-selling items with men at Christmas. And here are 72 other gift-giving ideas.

Focus on High-Value Gifts: Men are known for their penchant for high-value purchases. Luxurious goods, tools, and home improvement products are among their favorite choices to give to other men like Fathers, Uncles, and adult children.

Gift Cards: The NRF reports that 46% of men planned to buy gift cards as holiday gifts. We aren’t that creative at times. Ensure you have a gift card giveaway promotion on air with YOUR client.

Online Shopping Appeal: As recently as 2021, 62% of Men will buy online. Make sure your client copy directs listeners to an online store or landing page.

Home Improvement and DIY Projects: Men are involved in trimming the tree, putting up lights, and occasionally remodeling a bathroom for holiday guests. Who better than men interested in DIY and home improvement to sell more tools, ladders, and drills?

Advertising to men on sports radio in the final two weeks before Christmas is a strategic winner. Here are some more categories to target. Men’s significant role in holiday shopping, last-minute shopping tendencies, and diverse interests make them an ideal target audience. When scoring big during the holiday rush, make sure you get your share of business on air.

Rich Shertenlieb: Chris Russo Was Hoping to Bring Attention to Mad Dog Sports Radio

0

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo has been the talk of the sports media world after his declaration that he’d retire if the Arizona Diamondbacks made the World Series. 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Rich Shertenlieb has argued that Russo accomplished exactly what he wanted.

During Toucher & Rich Thursday, the Boston pair discussed the Russo retirement promise, with both saying they liked Mad Dog, but thought the entire situation was ridiculous.

“I don’t think a lot is expected of the Mad Dog channel now. It is what it is. I understand the value of going on those shows and taking a little bit of crap,” Shertenlieb said. “It’s got people talking about him. It’s got people talking about the Mad Dog network. This is all good for him. Everything’s good for him.”

Toucher & Rich previously shared their questioning for why Russo didn’t simply avoid the topic all together, and suggest that he said it in jest rather than turn the situation into a dayslong situation of being mocked and questioned.

The comments from Rich Shertenlieb came hours after an extension for his co-host, Fred Toucher, was announced by 98.5 The Sports Hub. Shertenlieb’s name was conspicuously absent from the release as rumors swirl about his potential future with the station. The duo did not discuss either Toucher’s extension or Shertenlieb’s lack of one during Thursday’s program.

Brandon Tierney: ‘We Will Always Defend Our Show’ After Clash with Carl Banks

0

A weekly interview between New York Giants legend Carl Banks and WFAN hosts Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata turned sour Wednesday with the pair ending the phone call early.

During the conversation, Banks took issue with an encapsulation by Licata that current Giants defender Kayvon Thibodeaux “looks awkward” and that he “stinks”.

“This unhealthy obsession for finding what is wrong with Kayvon Thibodeaux is bordering weird,” said Banks. “Don’t be informed unless you can educate yourself and look for what’s right.”

Tierney countered by arguing that it isn’t his job to only speak on the positives. “The one thing that’s truly bothering me is that you’re making it seem like we’re unnecessarily, overly negative.”

Banks countered by saying the opinion was “unhealthy”, adding If it’s not your job to find out what the kid does right, then it should not be your job to call him a bust,” when Licata interjected.

“I’ve heard enough!”, Licata shouted. “I’ve heard enough! I can’t take it anymore. Take him down. I’m serious. Carl’s supposed to be on the air and educate us. I don’t want to hear that we can’t give our opinion on what I’m seeing. Tell me why what I’m seeing is wrong…that is my opinion on it.”

“I’m not open to being lectured about how to do a show,” concluded Tierney. “I hate that that comes across as disrespectful because I really do love Carl…after a while, it’s too much. You can’t tell us how to do a show.”

The WFAN host took to social media after the interaction Wednesday, saying that Banks “lecturing us on how to do a show is where today’s disconnect started. Got off the rails. Just being honest.”

Tierney continued by saying that he holds no animosity toward Banks and looks forward to speaking to him again next week.

“We see things differently. Got heated. All good. I genuinely enjoy having him on every week and look forward to next week. And I mean that,” Tierney wrote. “Never here to do good people dirty. But we will always defend our show and what we do.”

Josh Klingler: Marcus Spears is ‘Not Here for the Nonsense’

0

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued a dominant stretch of play, winning their last six games and leading the AFC. The roster has changed and features a bevy of new players. However, there are some on-air commentators and personalities that have doubted the Chiefs’ ability to compete for a Super Bowl championship over the years, a group that ESPN analyst Marcus Spears is not part of.

On the Thursday edition of Fescoe in the Morning on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City, co-host Josh Klingler expressed how he has been fair with his assessments and always provided candid thoughts on the team.

“I feel like Marcus Spears is one of those guys you can count on,” Klingler said. “You can count on him to tell it to you like it is. If you were to go, ‘Hey, Marcus Spears, give me an honest assessment,’ he’d give it to you. He’d be a guy you want because, once again, he’s not here for the nonsense.”

Spears, who is a frequent contributor to First Take, NFL Live, and a member of the recently revamped Monday Night Countdown cast, has expanded his role over the years at ESPN. The former defensive end played nine seasons in the NFL and joined the company as a member of the SEC Network in 2014, just after his retirement from the league.

“He just doesn’t have time for people trying to make a producer’s life easy by having fake topics about other teams in the NFL,” Fescoe said. “He’s just not here for your shenanigans.”

In a recent ESPN segment, Spears argued that he is not going to argue about the Chiefs, calling them the “surest thing that you can pick in order to win a Super Bowl or to be in a Super Bowl.”

Jeff Saturday, who served as interim coach of the Indianapolis Colts in the latter half of the season, then joined the discussion by asking Spears who the Chiefs beat and arguing that the Jaguars are the best opponent the team has played. He then argued that Mahomes is the only reason the team is succeeding this year as Spears tried to continue with his take.

“Didn’t we have a guy on the text line say that to us a couple of weeks ago say that to us and then got really mad when I called him a moron,” Fescoe said. “I guess Jeff Saturday was texting the show – ‘Well, they’re only good because they have Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.’ Oh, so now we’re penalizing teams for (a) drafting well and (b) hiring the right head coach, right?”

Amazon Prime Video Strongly Considering NBA Package

0

With the next television rights deal still on the horizon for the NBA, a potential partnership between the league and Amazon Prime Video could be brewing.

A report from Front Office Sports suggests the streaming video platform is mulling over a potential package of NBA games to air on Tuesday or Thursday nights when the next TV deal is finalized.

The package would be one similar to the current offering of Thursday Night Football Amazon holds with the NFL.

Last year, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared his admiration for the partnership between the NFL and Amazon.

The advantages of joining forces with the streaming video platform are clear for the NBA. The age of the average Thursday Night Football viewer is seven years younger than the average age of other NFL viewers on traditional linear television.

Amazon has previously said it would be “aggressive but rational” while in search of more live sports rights.

“Sports are unique; they are uniquely valuable. Because of that, they’ve also been uniquely expensive,” said Amazon Prime Video sports head Jay Marine. “Having said that, they can do things that other things can’t because it’s a guaranteed audience.”

The NBA is currently in an exclusive negotiating window with its current national TV rights partners, ESPN/ABC and TNT.

ESPN’s NHL Frozen Frenzy Debuts with Six-Figure Viewership

0

The first-ever NHL Frozen Frenzy presentation on ESPN2 and ESPN+, a whiparound-style event featuring all 32 teams in action, had a successful debut with an average of 196,000 total viewers on the linear network.

57% of the audience emanated from the adults 18-49 demographic, which is 12 points higher than last season’s average for the NHL on ESPN. The P18-49 demographic averaged 113,000 viewers for the dynamic presentation, which was hosted by John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes.

By the numbers, the night featured 102 goals from 93 different scorers. There were never more than 10 minutes without a goal throughout the eight-hour course of events and three instances where at least three goals were scored simultaneously.

While it is unknown if ESPN will present this kind of broadcast again this season, it can point to success for its tripleheader on its primary linear channel. The three matchups – featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Washington Capitals; Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks; and the Philadelphia Flyers taking on the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights – averaged 432,000 total viewers, 11% higher than last year’s average for the property.

Additionally, 195,000 of those viewers came from the P18-49 demographic, up 10% compared to average totals during the 2022-23 year. The Maple Leafs-Capitals game, which dropped the puck at 6 p.m. EST, was the most-watched regular season game featuring a Canadian team on cable television since 2017.

On the year, the NHL on ESPN is averaging a total of 616,000 viewers, which is 26% higher than totals at the same point last season. Furthermore, an average of 294,000 viewers come from the P18-49 demographic, which is up 29% from this time last year.

ESPN Signs Boxing Insider and Analyst Mike Coppinger to Extension

0

ESPN has announced it has struck a multi-year contract extension with boxing analyst Mike Coppinger.

“Excited to continue to deliver boxing coverage and breaking news across ESPN platforms!”, Coppinger said on X, formerly Twitter. “Thanks to everyone for all your support.”

Coppinger will continue his work as ESPN’s boxing insider. Additionally, he will remain an analyst on the network’s State of Boxing programs. He will also be a contributor to coverage of the upcoming fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou that will air on ESPN+ on Saturday evening.

In addition to his work with the cable sports outlet, Coppinger is also an elector for the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Coppinger joined ESPN in 2019 after previously working at The Athletic and USA Today.

Earlier this year, Coppinger made headlines after he was denied a credential to attend the blockbuster fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford in Las Vegas. Reports claimed the network “went deep to the mat” to attempt to get Priemer Boxing Champions to reverse its decision.

Amazon Prime Video Adds Dude Perfect Alternate Broadcast for NFL Black Friday Game

0

Popular YouTube sports trick shot group Dude Perfect is returning to host an alternate broadcast for the Black Friday NFL game on Amazon Prime Video featuring the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.

The group has nearly 60 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 100 million followers on social media and is now returning for a second consecutive year of these broadcasts. The team will also return for another alternate stream on Thursday, Nov. 30 for the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks. Andrew Marchand of the New York Post was the first to report the news.

Throughout the 2023 regular season, Thursday Night Football has earned double-digit increases in viewership and is averaging 12.91 million viewers through its first six games, according to Nielsen Media Research. The prime-time football broadcast, which features Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit, and Kaylee Hartung, will make history by becoming the first property to present a game on Black Friday.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome back TNF with Dude Perfect as part of Prime Video’s inaugural Black Friday football celebration,” Jared Stacy, director of live production for Prime Video Sports said in a statement. “The Dudes’ infectious energy and passion for the game make them a natural fit for our enhanced Black Friday coverage, and the unique afternoon time slot on Nov. 24 presents an added opportunity for parents to watch this family-friendly NFL special alongside their kids.”

Dude Perfect presented four alternate broadcasts last season; however, they took place at different points throughout the regular season. For its sophomore season, the group devised a slate of games that Amazon Prime Video hopes will build on last year’s broadcasts and appeal to younger demographics. As it currently stands, Thursday Night Football has a median audience age of 47, seven years younger than the league’s linear average audience age of 54.

“We’re pumped to be coming back to bring the Dude Perfect experience to Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football! We have a blast with these alternate streams and love presenting a unique way to watch a live NFL game that brings families together,” Dude Perfect member Tyler Toney said in a statement. “To be part of the first-ever NFL Black Friday celebration is an added bonus, and then we come right back six days later for the Seahawks-Cowboys showdown in Big D — it doesn’t get any better!”

The broadcast will feature Toney, along with Garrett Hilbert, Cody Jones, Cory Cotton, and Coby Cotton interacting and captivating audiences on the alternate stream. According to Amazon Prime Video, the presentation will feature “special guests, outrageous stunts, competitions and the occasional world-record attempt.”

Jay Glazer: NFL Insiders ‘All Kind of Need Each Other’

0

A cottage industry of NFL Insiders has crept up in media circles, with virtually every media outlet employing an NFL newsbreaker. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports believes they are all reliant upon each other.

During an appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, Glazer explained that he used to struggle with not only getting the biggest scoops in the industry but also not receiving credit for his work.

“As crass as I am, my feelings get hurt easily,” said Glazer. “I don’t have the mental health capacity to deal with all that stuff.”

He continued by noting that he eventually grew to become friendly with colleagues like Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen despite the competitive nature of the job.

“I’ve tried to change the way I see my role, what my job is,” he said. “I kind of realized a long time ago, we all kind of need each other.”
