Anatomy of an Analyst: Dan Orlovsky

A Connecticut guy, born and raised, Dan Orlovsky played his high school and college football in the state. Now, he calls it home again as an ESPN football analyst in Bristol. Orlovsky was always the football version of a “gym rat,” constantly killing time by working on his craft, right in his backyard.

“When I was younger, I would have garbage cans set up all around the yard,” Orlovsky recalled. “And I would have like 20 balls and just fire them into the cans. I really had nothing else to do back then,” he told the Connecticut Post in 2000.

Orlovsky attended Shelton High School and became the starting quarterback during his sophomore year. As a senior, he threw for 2,489 yards and 58 touchdowns as the Gaels went 12–0, winning a state championship. His overall record as a high school quarterback was 28–4.

He started as a freshman at UConn in 2001 after Keron Henry suffered a sprained knee. Orlovsky threw for 9 touchdowns, but was picked off 11 times. He started every game the next three seasons leading the Huskies to its inaugural bowl appearance as a senior. He holds school records for pass completions (916), yards passing (10,706) and touchdown passes (84).

Orlovsky was drafted by the Lions in the 5th round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He made his first NFL start 3 years later in October of 2008 in a loss against the Vikings. However, early in the first quarter when he lined up in shotgun formation, he accidentally ran out of the back of his own end zone for a safety. That turned out to be the difference in a 12-10 loss.

“When they started blowing the whistle, I was like, ‘Did we false start, or were they offsides or something?'” Orlovsky said after that game. “And I looked, and I was just like, ‘You’re an idiot'”. The game ended up being the closest the Lions would come to a victory in their historic 0-16 season.

Just last weekend, Gardner Minshew pulled an “Orlovsky”, inadvertently stepping out of his own end zone for a safety. Orlovsky felt somewhat vindicated and took to social media to proclaim such.

“First Jimmy. Now Gardner. I’m off the hook. I’m off the hook!” Orlovsky proudly said.

Orlovsky was referencing Jimmy Garoppolo, who made the same mistake a year ago. Many still feel that Orlovsky, being the O.G. will always be remembered for the play.  He’s got a good sense of humor about it, one of the lines on his Twitter bio reads: “Endzones should be 11 yards.”

He also played for the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before returning to Detroit in 2015 for his final season.

AT ESPN

Orlovsky joined ESPN in 2018 after announcing his retirement from the NFL. He began appearing on NFL Live in 2019, and earned a more consistent, daily role in 2020. He’s also appeared on and contributed to, ESPN’s Get Up, First Take and SportsCenter.

During the college football season, Orlovsky was an analyst on a game broadcast each week. He also joined the #2 Monday Night Football booth alongside Louis Riddick and Steve Levy in 2022, when Brian Griese left. That booth has since changed, as has Orlovsky’s role at the network.

Chris Fowler has taken over the play-by-play role in that booth on MNF secondary broadcasts. The team will call 4 games (2 are already in the books) during this 2023 NFL season. This new role gives Orlovsky the best of all worlds, he’ll still get to call games, lend his expertise to studio shows and offer his opinions on those ‘panel shows’ on ESPN.

WHAT MAKES HIM SO GOOD?

His credentials as a former NFL quarterback who had some success in his career come shining through when he analyzes both offenses and defenses.  You can tell that Orlovsky knows his stuff and is very passionate about this sport. When he appears on NFL Live or SportsCenter, his breakdown of film is very detailed, but not so highbrow that you can’t understand it as a viewer.

Orolovsky’s summation of what he is seeing is crisp and informative. I imagine that in his days on the field, coaches had a hard time getting him out of the video room, because his analysis is so detailed and organized in thought. That had to come from his years of really paying attention to studying his craft. Now it’s really paying off for him as a broadcaster.

In the booth, Orlovsky works well with Riddick, who I’m a big fan of. The two guys each have opinions, but there is a mutual respect between them, or at least that’s how it sounds in the MNF booth. While he doesn’t have as much time to make his point, Orlovsky is quite successful in conveying information and analysis. His unique perspective allows fans to really be taken inside the mind of an NFL quarterback. What the player should be seeing, where his progression should go and when it’s a good time for a check down. He doesn’t come across as know-it-all either. Orlovsky just relays from his experience and knowledge what the situation is and what should or shouldn’t have happened.

He has the ability to offer a hot take. In watching and reading about him, the take doesn’t come across as a personal attack, like some of the talking heads offer.

He did come out firing on a recent Get Up show, with some definite opinions on Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen after a rough start in Week 1. But notice, even though it seems like he walks it back, he really doesn’t. He’s just the voice of reason and keeps it about football and not the man.

“Number one, I love Josh Allen’s accountability after the game. He absolutely did the right thing and wore it. Number two, someone in that building, and we’re Thursday, so I’m assuming this has happened,” Orlovsky started. “Someone in that building has to have the courage to sit down, look him dead in the eyes, a grown man, and say, ‘we have to grow up.’ And that is not a belittling statement, that’s not picking on him, but there are times in games where Josh has to sit there and say, it’s no longer cool or fun or wow, look at me, run around and make all these crazy throws. Someone’s gonna have to have the courage to sit there and go, ‘Josh, we gotta grow up. You’re one of the best players in the league. You are unquestionably our best player. But when we get reckless with the football, we hurt our football team.’”

Then Orlovsky showed that voice of reason and keeps everything in perspective. “We got to take a chill pill as well. I’ve heard some things get said about Josh Allen over the past couple days that are absolutely ludicrous.” Orlovsky opined. “Josh Allen is a top three quarterback in the NFL. You absolutely can win a Super Bowl with Josh Allen. There’s no doubt about it that their window is as long as Josh is their quarterback, it is available. Stop saying that he’s oh my gosh gonna be the reason why they can’t get to the Super Bowl. He’s one of the best players in the game.”

Refreshing to hear an analyst with his feet firmly planted on the ground. I like Orlovsky’s style and substance. He’s an easy listen and you just might learn something along the way.

DID YOU KNOW?

Orlovsky used modern technology and a nudge from his wife to figure out what was next after retiring from the NFL in 2017.

As the story goes, Orlovsky was watching the Week 10 Panthers-Dolphins Sunday night game in 2018 and was explaining to his wife the X’s and O’s behind a Cam Newton touchdown pass.

“She said you should make a video and put it on social media,” Orlovsky told The New York Post in late 2018. “At this point I thought social media was stupid, I had maybe 1,000 followers on Twitter. Three minutes later, I came to my senses. I paused my television, used the camera in my phone and just broke the play down. I went to bed and it went viral [on Instagram], and that was my moment to be like, ‘Huh, that’s how I can separate myself.’ ”

The rest is history.

Learn To Be Your Own Biggest Critic

0

I know hosts and programmers who see everything as wonderful even though it isn’t. I know people who see negativity in everything. I look at things differently and think that both perspectives are wrong. Today, I hope that I can help you find reality and become a critic.

You are programming an awesome news/talk station and seeing all the cool things that are accomplished on a daily basis. Celebrate every incredible moment. Or you are a talk show host, and you are recognized at the grocery store or the restaurant. You’re killing it. Big show on a top station. You are invited to speak at events, charity auctions, and are loaded up with endorsements. Why shouldn’t either of these people be strutting around like they are Deion Sanders?

It is simple why the answer is no: because you are on top today, doesn’t mean you will be on top tomorrow.

Budgets, new corporate leadership, corporate mandates, and market pressures could change your enthusiasm. Are you living in reality? You need to assess this.

Should you be reinventing yourself? What is next for your station or your show? Do you know whatever takes place next will be epic? When was the last time that you listened to your station like an actual human?

Hey Program Directors, take a day to take a long drive listening to your station. Get in the car and drive both morning and afternoon drive times.

Is your station actually grabbing your attention? How is the imaging? Does it leap out of the speaker? Is it too aggressive or not enough?  Does it sound like a rock or a good sports station? Sometimes, it could be too aggressive. Most news/talk stations appeal to 60% to 70% dudes.

Does your station sound like your market? Every station is a living breathing entity. They are all different. Your community has a certain feel to it. Are you marrying those two variables?

Ok, talk show hosts: Do you really know your community? Are you speaking to the most likely listener to your station? When is the last time that you airchecked yourself? If your vehicle still has a CD player, burn an hour and go for a drive. If you’re being honest, would you listen to you? Do you have the guts to be honest with yourself?

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs crushed the Chicago Bears on Sunday. I have one guarantee for you: Mahomes was watching his tape all day on Monday. He knew when he failed and where he did great. Do you know? Really?

Find the success. Find the win. You may or may not be doing better than you think. Become a critic. What went right?  Did you aircheck yourself? Did you hit your station’s target? Do you know who you’re supposed to be speaking to?

If your answer is conservative human, you are wrong. They are much more complex than just a political point of view. They have mortgages to pay. There are kids that need education. They have jobs, spouses, and things that they love to do. These people are not just angry white men just sick of paying taxes.

Find that gold. What did you do well? Every host hates hearing their own voice. Every host. If you are going to be a better host, you need to listen to yourself and hear the good.

Here is what I try to do…  Look at the glass half full. What can be done better? Where is the station falling short? Do you know? How can you solve the deficit? Is the news crispy written?  How is the imaging? Are you overthinking it? Go for a drive and find out.

Listen like a real person. Think like a critic. Are you discussing the things that people actually care about? Are you reflecting your target audience member? How can you make it even better? What improvements need to be made?

The worst lie that you can tell is the one that you say to yourself. Are you looking into the mirror and lying to yourself? Perhaps it is over your relationships, marriage, job security, attractiveness, or popularity. We all have told ourselves lies. I have lied to myself. It is so easy today. You can fill your existence with screens and sounds.

Take a walk on a hiking trail with no devices. Just you and your thoughts. Get in touch with your real self and become that critic. If you don’t, reality will be evaded.

We all have moments where we need to be real. There is probably a lot of good going on with your station or show. There is also probably a lot of room to improve. Be real.

Top Sports Streamers Form Lobbying Alliance

0

There is now an official lobbying group that will advocate to lawmakers on behalf of streaming entities.

Front Office Sports reported Wednesday that the Streaming Innovation Alliance is a group consisting of entities like Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Netflix and Disney’s streaming platforms. It aims to work with various government agencies and elected officials on writing and passing streaming-friendly legislation.

“Video streaming services do not use public rights of way, airwaves, or spectrum, and are not subject to the kinds of regulation and taxation historically reserved for services to offset their use of those public goods,” the alliance said. “Streaming is something new and different, and should be governed by innovative, tailored approaches.”

While there are some big players involved in this alliance, heavy hitters like Apple, Amazon, YouTube and Roku are absent. It’s unclear whether those companies and their respective streaming services will join the alliance.

FOS indicated that while the forming of the alliance isn’t strictly tied to sports, many of the companies and entities involved have live sports on their platforms and that kind of programming can be an essential part of streaming offers.

Mike Florio: Can Taylor Swift Fans Save Sunday Night Football Without Aaron Rodgers?

0

This week’s Sunday Night Football matchup was supposed to feature Patrick Mahomes against Aaron Rodgers, but that’s not going to happen.

Viewership of the game will probably suffer a little bit without Rodgers, but NBC’s Mike Florio thinks Taylor Swift fans can give the game a nice bump.

In an appearance on Bernstein & Holmes on 670 The Score on Wednesday, Florio expressed doubt that football fans will one day get to see a game featuring the Mahomes and Rodgers considering all the previous potential matchups between the Chiefs and Packers one quarterback or the other was hurt and wouldn’t be able to play.

But with tight end Travis Kelce now reportedly dating Taylor Swift, Florio said there’s great potential that there will be added interest in hopes of potentially seeing Taylor in another suite cheering Kelce and the Chiefs on.

“If all the Swifties out there decide they’re gonna descend on NBC and Peacock on Sunday night to watch Travis Kelce – and maybe catch glimpses of Taylor Swift in a luxury suite at MetLife Stadium – those numbers could go through the roof,” he said.

Florio added that he’s only been paying attention to and talking about Kelce and Swift since Travis saw a huge jump in jersey sales this week. Reports are that sales were up 400%.

Mike credited Rich Eisen for pointing out on Monday that while the league will undoubtedly stand to benefit further from the Swift effect, it wasn’t a good day for those who worked on announcing Usher as the halftime performer at the Super Bowl in February.

“The NFL had to be pissed that the day that they announced Usher was gonna be the Super Bowl halftime performer, Taylor Swift took all the oxygen out of the musical room as far as the NFL is concerned,” Florio said. He added that it’s possible Swift is trying to leverage herself into a spot on the stage in Las Vegas.

Timberwolves & Lynx Take Radio Broadcasts to KFAN

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves will have a new radio home from the 2023-24 season and beyond, the team announced on Wednesday.

The Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA will have all their games air on KFAN 100.3 in Minneapolis. This will be the first time since 2011 that KFAN is the flagship station of the T-Wolves.

Additionally, the T-Wolves and the Lynx will have a dedicated 24/7 streaming channel on the iHeartRadio app and website.

Earlier this month, the Timberwolves announced they were leaving WCCO, which had been their radio home since 2011. At the time, COO Ryan Tanke said the team had a new one-year partnership which he described as a “trial” and “super non-traditional”.

“This is an exciting time for our organization as we launch a multi-faceted distribution partnership with one of the largest media platforms in the country,” Timberwolves and Lynx CEO Ethan Casson said. “Welcoming KFAN 100.3 as our new flagship radio station, creating a 24/7/365 Timberwolves streaming channel on iHeartRadio, and producing cross-promotional opportunities with the entire portfolio of local iHeartMedia stations, will strategically grow our Timberwolves and Lynx fanbase.”

In addition to being a play-by-play hub, KFAN will also have regular appearances by Timberwolves players, head coach Chris Finch and president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, among others, on local programming throughout the season.

Connelly and front office execs will chat with Dan Barreiro in the afternoons, while Finch will have regular check-ins with Paul Allen in middays. Players will make frequent appearances across the nine-station iHeart Minneapolis cluster.

Alan Horton will continue to call play-by-play of Timberwolves games. This year will mark his 17th season with the team. He’s called over 1,000 games in his career. Cal Soderquist will handle pre-game and post-game hosting duties.

Marcellus Wiley: Stephen A. Smith Got Outshined By Max Kellerman on Issues He Hoped to Conquer

0

Stephen A. Smith was very candid about his feelings on working with Max Kellerman on First Take in a recent interview on The Joe Budden Podcast, and Marcellus Wiley had an idea of why things ultimately didn’t work out between the two.

Stephen A. didn’t mince words when talking about how he needed to take the show in a different direction. Plus the working relationship between Smith and Kellerman had run its course.

“It was totally my fault and the reason it was my fault is because I didn’t like working with him,” he said. “It’s just that damn simple. I didn’t like it. I thought the show was stale. I thought that we had flatlined when it came to the public at large. I didn’t want to go from No. 1 to No. 2. when Skip (Bayless) left. I wasn’t having that. That shit wasn’t gonna happen.”

On his Never Shut Up daily show on Wednesday, Wiley said he thought Stephen A. was often outsmarted by Kellerman when trying to tackle issues bigger than just sports.

“He wanted Max first, because he was white. The show wanted Max to speak for white America,” Wiley said. “That would allow Stephen A. to get to speak for Black America. Now, here’s the problem. Stephen A. realized quickly that he was dealing with a whole different animal (in Kellerman), especially on Black issues, especially on societal issues. Because Max Kellerman is not only a historian, but the dude is a bona fide genius.”

Wiley thought that Max was perhaps too intelligent in some ways for Stephen A., and that Smith recognized it as a weakness in some way and had Max leave the show.

“It’s an insecurity for Stephen A. And that’s what happened,” he said. “This all started from a guy who was so intelligent, it brought back some of those insecurities from Stephen A.”

“Stephen A. felt threatened point plank,” he said. “Ain’t no way around it.”

Stephen A. did admit in that interview that he knew Max was a very smart person, but ultimately if he didn’t like working with him and he wasn’t proud of the product they were putting on the airwaves every day, something needed to change.

“I had mad respect for him from the standpoint of white dude, highly intelligent, Ivy League — educated from Columbia. Smart as a whip. Can talk his ass off,” Smith said. “Can talk about anything. I get all that. But you weren’t an athlete, and you weren’t a journalist. And the absence of the two components left people wondering, ‘Why should we listen to you?’”

“Max & I weren’t working in the end. I wanted to win. So I didn’t want that duo,” Smith wrote in a tweet after the interview. “Doesn’t mean he isn’t smart, talented and that he’s not a good guy. I have nothing against him. I wish him well. Just needed a change. That’s all.”

Andre Iguodala, Evan Turner Move Podcast From Meadowlark Media to SB Nation

0

Former National Basketball Association forwards Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner are bringing their hit podcast, Point Forward, to Vox Media and SB Nation for its third season. The duo will release weekly episodes of the show on various audio distribution platforms in addition to their YouTube channel, which has nearly 60,000 subscribers. The partnership will give fans a look at life as an NBA player on and off the court and how the game has changed over the years with thought-provoking, insightful conversation. Meadowlark Media had produced, monetized and help distributed the podcast for its first two seasons on the air.

“Andre and Evan have reached some of the highest levels of success both on and off the court, and we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to partner with them in bringing Point Forward to the SB Nation family,” Jermaine Spradley, publisher at SB Nation, said in a statement. “We’re always looking for partnerships that allow us to connect influential creators with the most loyal sports fans, and we plan to bring Point Forward to life at the biggest sports moments during the NBA season to engage even further with the community that SB Nation was founded upon.”

Episodes will be released starting in October and will feature discussions between the two co-hosts and special guest appearances. Over the first two seasons of the show, athletes such as Stephen Curry and Sue Bird, along with LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and Vista Equity Partners founder and chairman Robert Smith, have appeared on the program for interviews. Whether the discourse centers on sports stories, business advice or motivation, both Iguodala and Turner will grant viewers an exclusive look into the way they think and set themselves up for sustained success.

“Point Forward has always been about diving deeper into topics that resonate with our audience, and now with the unparalleled reach and expertise of SB Nation and Vox Media, we’re excited to take our conversations to an even wider audience,” Iguodala said in a statement. “Basketball is our north star, but our conversations are universal.”

“Having been on both sides of the game – as a player and a coach – I’ve come to appreciate the myriad stories that exist within the world of sports,” Turner added in a statement. “Andre and I have always had raw and honest discussions, and now we have a platform that will allow us to reach fans, thinkers, and enthusiasts on an even greater scale. The next season is set to be our best yet, and we’re thrilled to embark on this journey with SB Nation and Vox Media.”

The third season of the show will include presenting sponsor DraftKings Sportsbook, the official sports betting operator of the show. Additionally, there are opportunities to integrate additional sponsors into the program, which has Vox Media and SB Nation assuming sales, marketing and distribution responsibilities as part of the deal.

The business entity will also collaborate with Iguodala and Turner to explore new ways to appeal and entertain the audience throughout the NBA season. With this deal, the show officially joins the Vox Media Podcast Network, which continues to grow and includes premium offerings from luminaries and experts, including Sam Sanders, Preet Bharara and Esther Perel among others.

Stephen A. Smith: Our Sensitivity is at ‘An Alarming Level’

0

Stephen A. Smith is not hesitant about making his opinions known on First Take and The Stephen A. Smith Show throughout the week. The featured commentator recently took time out of his schedule to record a new episode of a video series with GQ Sports titled “Actually Me,” where guests go undercover on the internet and respond to comments or questions pertaining to them. Throughout the 10-minute segment, Smith logged on to X, Instagram and YouTube among other social media platforms under the pseudonym, “ActuallySAS,” and gave his opinions on commentary from viewers and fans.

On TikTok, a user repurposed an old clip of Smith discussing former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who played three years and 31 games in the National Football League after being selected first-overall by the team in 2007. After Russell spoke with Sports Illustrated and insinuated that sleep apnea and lack of support from coaches and players were behind his struggles, Smith appeared on ESPN and likened him to a thief. Throughout his rant, he proceeded to call the No. 1 overall pick a “disgrace” and a “fat slob, no-good, lazy bum of a quarterback,” parlance that one user noted would be looked at differently in today’s society.

“How much has ESPN changed from then till now?,” user “yoshimitchell” asked on TikTok. “This seems so unhinged, LMAO.”

Smith replied by saying that ESPN has not been the entity that has changed; rather, the network has had to adapt to changing societal conditions and standards of what is considered accepted. Being able to give an opinion on television without avoiding incessant levels of scrutiny has augmented in difficulty, according to Smith, especially in an era when commentary is rapidly documented.

“Our level of sensitivity has been heightened to an alarming level; the slightest offense could cost you your career, not just your job,” Smith said. “I can’t go to work every day, be on national television or be on the radio or be on the airwaves of my podcast, The Stephen A. Smith Show, telling you lies. I’ma let you know where the hell I stand; I don’t give a damn what anybody says.”

Another clip later in the video posted to Reddit demonstrated one of Smith’s rants about marijuana and how athletes being paid millions of dollars should be able to resist use of the psychoactive drug. The question left in the comments section of the video by user “No-Elderberry-3743” asked if Smith plans out his rants or if he improvises what he is going to say live on the air. Smith answered the question by pointing to his preparation as being the reason he can elocute points in different ways wherefore he does not pre-script the way he goes about delivering a take.

“I always do my homework before I speak publicly,” Smith said, “but I don’t definitively know what I’m going to say until it’s time to speak.”

Bill O’Reilly: Interview with Tucker Carlson Designed to Compete with Republican Debate

0

Tucker Carlson is slated to host fellow former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly tonight for an extended interview that will drop alongside the second 2024 Republican Presidential debate. O’Reilly says that’s the entire point of the interview.

During his No Spin News program Tuesday night, O’Reilly shared that the interview should serve as an alternative to the the debate.

“Tucker Carlson interviewed me for close to an hour last night. And you can watch that interview at 9:00 PM ET. And it’s designed to compete with the Republican debate in Simi Valley, California, north of LA,” admitted O’Reilly. “So Carlson drops these interviews so people will have a choice. Whatever. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s a good interview, and I think you will like it.”

Both Bill O’Reilly and Carlson departed Fox News during less-than-ideal circumstances. O’Reilly was ousted in 2017 after allegations of sexual harassment. Carlson exited in April of this year. He contends his firing was connected to the network’s settlement of the defamation lawsuit brought forth by Dominion Voting Systems. However, both Fox News and Dominion have independently denied those accusations.

O’Reilly continued the discussion by saying Carlson was kind to have him on his program for nearly an hour to discuss his latest book Killing the Witches: The Horror of Salem, Massachusetts. However, the former Fox News hosts didn’t strictly discuss the book.

“The interview, of course, dealt with more than the book. It dealt with network and cable news. It dealt with the Biden administration, and it dealt with social things in America. But he was very interested in the demonic possession part of killing the witches, which is the modern part of the book.”

Gregg Giannotti: ‘No Way in Hell’ New York Jets Do Not Get Flexed Out of Prime Time

0

Prior to the start of the NFL season, the New York Jets were placed in the maximum six prime-time game slots and featured on the NFL Films and HBO Sports original series, Hard Knocks, largely due to the acquisition of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Now that Rodgers is likely out for the season recovering from a torn left Achilles, major television networks could be looking to move the Jets out of prime time positioning to a regular Sunday game slot on CBS or FOX. The Jets will be featured on Sunday Night Football on NBC this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs, and will then have four more appearances across ESPN, NBC and Amazon Prime Video.

Flex scheduling can be used twice between Week 5 and 10, and at the discretion of the league during Week 11 until Week 17, as per previously agreed upon rules for Sunday Night Football. The Walt Disney Company’s Monday Night Football property can be used twice by the NFL from Week 12 to Week 17, marking the first time the property has had such an ability. Additionally, Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video can be used up to two times between Weeks 13 and 17. Out of the Jets four remaining games in prime time, flex scheduling can be used three times. One of those occurrences would be for the league’s first Black Friday game on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023 when they face the Miami Dolphins.

“This prime time situation – if they don’t start flexing out all of these Jets games, I would be shocked,” Gregg Giannotti said Wednesday morning on WFAN. “There is no way in hell that some of these prime-time games that the Jets have coming up later in the season are actually going to stay there.”

Giannotti’s co-host, Boomer Esiason, implored him to wait and see what happens with the season rather than jumping to conclusions. “Gang Green” currently sits at 1-2 and are considered underdogs against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I know what you’re doing – you don’t believe in Zach [Wilson]; I know that,” Esiason explained, “and you don’t believe their defense is good enough to win some games for them, which it obviously is. Depending on what week you’re looking at will determine whether or not they’re flexed.”

The show then proceeded to take a call as they searched the rules for flex scheduling, honing in on the Jets’ matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Nov. 12 as a possibility. Since that game is in Week 9 and on Sunday Night Football, there is a possibility that NBC Sports may opt to change that game out for a more favorable matchup. The league will make the announcement no later than 12 days before kickoff pertaining to if the game has been moved or not.
