Linda Yaccarino Refutes Bloomberg Report On Rise of ‘Toxic’ Twitter Content

0

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino is pushing back on a story from Bloomberg that claimed the social media platform has seen a rise in “toxic” content.

A Bloomberg report authored by Aisha Counts and Eari Nakano claims a “surge” in “harmful content” is an issue for prospective advertisers looking to work with Twitter. The report alleges that content moderation policies put in place by Elon Musk after his purchase of the platform “has led to a dramatic spike in hateful, violent, and inaccurate posts”.

In a tweet addressing the topic, Yaccarino claimed Bloomberg’s story is “not true”. She added that what “more than 99% of content users and advertisers see on Twitter is healthy”.

“The Bloomberg story pulled together a collection of incorrect, misleading, and outdated metrics, mostly from the period shortly after Twitter’s acquisition,” wrote Yaccarino. “It also lacks extremely important context not to mention critical updates on our progress and actions.”

“Every other platform will tell you the work is never done. That’s true for them and for Twitter. But Twitter’s progress is real, we’ve been transparent about it, and we’re proud of it. And we just wanted you to know the facts,” Yaccarino continued.

Erick Erickson: CNN, Jake Tapper Deserve Credit for DeSantis Interview

0

CNN host Jake Tapper sat down with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) for a high-profile interview earlier this week, and Erick Erickson was impressed by both parties.

In a post to his Substack, Erickson commended both Tapper and DeSantis for their performance during the interview.

“The Trump team is attacking the interview as a ‘softball’ interview. But actually, what happened was DeSantis was pretty consistent with his beliefs,” Erickson wrote. “Tapper let DeSantis speak. DeSantis spoke in complete sentences with substance. But he also was in a format with a reporter who would force him to land on substance without a filibuster. Tapper was willing to challenge, and DeSantis was willing to be challenged.

“We need more of that. Kudos to Tapper for doing a great interview, and kudos to DeSantis for handling it very well. He needs to do more interviews outside of the conservative media space…Also, I think CNN should be commended for doing a substantive interview, not just gotcha journalism.”

Erickson’s comments came after he mentioned that he and Tapper are friends, despite the political differences between the two.

Howie Carr: Efforts by Vermont Radio Stations During Flooding ‘Is What Local Radio is For’

0

The state of Vermont has undergone severe flooding in several areas in recent weeks, and WVMT is promoting a recovery fund with the help of Howie Carr.

On The Howie Carr Show Wednesday, the Boston-based host pledged $1,000 for the flood response and recovery fund started by WVMT Radio

“We’re going to donate a thousand bucks to the WVMT Rise and Rebuild Radio Fund. This is what local radio is for. You got to help out. You got to help out everybody,” Carr reiterated.

WVMT Radio representatives have shared that every dollar raised will stay in the state of Vermont.

WVMT — which airs The Howie Carr Show from 3:00-7:00 PM — is currently only broadcasting on 96.3 FM. The station’s tower for 620 AM was damaged during a recent storm.

“We are awaiting replacement parts and will be back on the sir as soon as possible,” the station wrote in a Facebook post.

NBC Sports Announces ‘B1G College Countdown’

1

NBC Sports has officially announced the launch of a new studio show for its prime time football games titled B1G College Countdown. The program will emanate from the site of the network’s showcase game that week – the first of which will be at Penn State University when the Nittany Lions host the West Virginia Mountaineers starting at 7 p.m. EST. Following the new program is the premiere of B1G Ten Saturday Night, which features a new commentary team of Noah Eagle, Todd Blackledge and Kathryn Tappen. The B1G College Countdown panel will return at halftime from each game to provide commentary, highlights and analysis throughout the contests, 11 of which are Big Ten games and two at Notre Dame.

“The college football atmosphere is unlike anything in sports and that’s why we’re going to be on campus every week with B1G College Countdown,” Sam Flood, executive producer at NBC Sports, said in a statement. “….We can’t wait to kick things off on September 2 from Happy Valley.”

Anchoring the program is Maria Taylor, who also hosts Football Night in America, the most-watched studio program in all of professional sports. Since joining NBC in 2021, Taylor has been a critical part of the network’s coverage – including for Super Bowl LVI and the Olympic Games in both Beijing and Tokyo. The co-host of the program is Ahmed Fareed, who currently works on different NBC Sports properties including MLB Sunday Leadoff.

Joining Taylor and Fareed on the desk are analysts Matt Cassel, Joshua Perry and Michael Robinson, all of whom are former professional football players.

Cassel was an NFL quarterback over 14 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions and New England Patriots among other teams. While he was in college, he won two national championships as a backup quarterback for the USC Trojans.

Perry was a linebacker for the Ohio State Buckeyes and won the first College Football Playoff National Championship in 2014. Upon making it to the NFL, he struggled with injuries and retired after two seasons and pursued a career in sports media. Perry has appeared on the Big Ten Network and on sports radio in Columbus, Ohio.

Robinson works as an analyst for NBC Sports’ coverage of the United States Football League (USFL) after spending eight seasons in the NFL. While he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks, he won Super Bowl XLVIII and retired following the championship game. Before his NFL career, he was the starting quarterback for the Penn State Nittany Lions and led the team to the conference championship in 2005. Since his time on the gridiron came to an end, Robinson has worked on NFL Network across its studio programming and is working as a television analyst during the preseason for the Seattle Seahawks.

“Matt, Joshua and Michael hail from three of the most fabled programs and energized scenes in college football – USC, Ohio State and Penn State, [respectively],” Flood said. “Ahmed grew up in Big Ten country and has a deep passion for the sport and its fans. As the host of the NFL’s show of record and a two-sport collegiate athlete, Maria is the perfect choice to lead this new Saturday night tradition.”

Lindsay Schanzer, the winner of six Sports Emmy awards and former production intern with the YES Network, will produce the new show. Aside from her new role in football coverage, Schanzer works as the company’s senior producer for horse racing and has credits on Sunday Night Football and Football Night in America. Kaare Numme, the director of Football Night in America, will be joined by Jared Sumner to direct the new program. Both have vast experience with significant sports properties and will aim to create a stellar product with the new studio show.

NBC Sports landed part of the Big Ten Conference broadcast rights in a historic seven-year media rights agreement with CBS and FOX, reportedly worth more than $8 billion. The deal was closed while Pete Bevacqua served as chairman of NBC Sports, and he has since joined Notre Dame Athletics to become its athletic director next year. Notre Dame is in the midst of media rights negotiations with NBC Sports and is aiming to triple its fee to televise home games, which averaged 2.43 million viewers last season. If it is unsuccessful, the team could consider forgoing its unique media independence and join a Power Five conference.

Kyle Rudolph was reportedly set to join NBC Sports’ Big Ten coverage to call select games, but he was not revealed as part of the group of on-air talent in the announcement. The network also reportedly targeted J.J. Watt to join the coverage before he signed with CBS Sports. That being said, more Big Ten football games have yet to be revealed and will gradually be divulged 12 days prior to the scheduled game date. All prime time Big Ten games will also be available for consumers to stream on Peacock.

Mike Gallagher: Salem Media Group Won’t Be The Same Without Stuart Epperson

0

Earlier this week, Salem Media Group co-founder Stuart Epperson died at the age of 86. Salem Radio Network host Mike Gallagher memorialized Epperson during his program after the announcement.

“All of us are sitting here largely because of his efforts along with his brother-in-law Ed Atsinger, who founded Salem and what would become Salem Media Group back in the early 1970s,” Gallagher said before calling Epperson a “broadcasting giant”.

“He was such a kind and decent and godly man. A lot of stories about Stuart that people don’t even know about. He and Nancy, his wife, his beloved wife, mentoring kids from the inner city. Did things that a lot of people had no idea they did. They just did it quietly with a servant’s heart.

“Of course, he was a broadcasting legend. Salem is not going to be the same without him,” The Mike Gallagher Show host continued. “Anyone who got to know him or met him received a blessing because he fought the good fight.”

Epperson was a prominent figure in Christian radio, having served on the board of directors for the National Religious Broadcasters Association. In 2005, Time Magazine acknowledged his influence by listing him among the 25 most influential evangelicals in America.

92.9 ESPN Posts Double Digits in Every Daypart in Memphis Spring Book

Memphis is a town that loves its teams. If you are making time to talk about the Tigers and Grizzlies, people are going to listen. The performance of 92.9 ESPN in the spring book proves that is true.

The station was number one with men 25-54 for the both the full week (M-Su 6A-Mid), when it did a 10.7, and in weekday primetime (M-F 6A-7P), when it did a 13.7. Not only are both numbers impressive, but they show impressive growth too. The station is up by just under 23% year-over-year for the full week and up 23.4% for weekday prime.

Local programming once again pulled huge numbers for 92.9 ESPN. Middays are divided on the station between Geoff Calkins and Jason & John. Both shows were number one in their time slot.

Calkins, who is on from 9-11 AM, led the station with a 16.9 share. Jason & John scored a 16 share from 11A-2P.

Afternoons is also a split daypart for 92.9 ESPN. Again, both shows topped the market.

From 2-4P, Giannotto & Jeffrey posted a fifteen share. Gabe Kuhn continued his impressive first full year with 92.9 ESPN by posting a 14 share.

Chuck Freimund Returning to KFIZ as Sports Director

0

Chuck Freimund is making a return to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin as the sports director of KFIZ, the station has announced. Freimund formerly worked at the station from 1996 to 2005 and is going to be bringing his talent and experience back to the station’s airwaves.

During the week, he will be anchoring local sports reports on KFIZ Today and host the daily sports program, KFIZ Sports Tonight. When high school basketball season resumes, he will be the station’s lead play-by-play announcer.

On Friday nights, Freimund will host Football Friday Tonight from 9:30 to 11 p.m. CST, supplementing the commentary team of Nick Van Nocker and Shawn Kiser. Before the start of the football broadcasts, Freimund will be joined by Van Nocker to host an extensive pregame show featuring news, analysis and interviews to prepare fans for the matchup at hand.

Freimund officially returns to the station on Monday, Aug. 14, ahead of the start of high school football season. When the station divulged the information over the air, Freimund appeared and emphasized the importance of covering local sports and serving as an outlet for the community.

“KFIZ’s all about Fond du Lac and the Fond du Lac area,” Freimund said. “We’re going to continue to build on that and what we’ve done…. Just trying to build on all those great people that have worked here because this is a special place, KFIZ. This isn’t some rinky-dink radio station in the middle of nowhere. This is one of the first radio stations in our country [and] a hallmark radio station.”

“Chuck brings years of valuable experience to the team and is the perfect person to lead KFIZ’s coverage of high school sports,” Randy Hopper, the president and owner of Mountain Dog Media, said in a statement.

Outside of the station, Friedmund hosts the Locked On Brewers podcast with the Locked On Podcast Network and contributes to various media outlets in the city of Milwaukee.

Jeanine Pirro: CNN Coverage of Jack Smith ‘So Stupid’

0

Judge Jeanine Pirro, co-host of The Five on Fox News, criticized CNN for their coverage of special counsel Jack Smith’s visit to a Subway restaurant and its implications for the Trump Jan. 6 investigation. CNN spent significant time analyzing Smith’s lunch break with legal experts this week.

“The fact that they have to go to that level to interpret this as a message to Donald Trump, they suffer from Trump derangement syndrome,” she said. “They can’t stop with the Donald Trump stuff.”

On Tuesday, Donald Trump acknowledged that he is the subject of a federal investigation related to the Jan. 6, 2021, riots. He may face charges for his alleged involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his supporters’ violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“The fact that they (CNN) spent time interpreting a guy going to lunch as if all of us don’t go to lunch when we’re working is so stupid.”

Trump mentioned that Special Counsel Jack Smith had sent him a letter. The letter requested that he report to the Grand Jury in just four days, which Trump believes could lead to an arrest and indictment.

The former president did not reveal whether he plans to appear before the grand jury or what charges he may be facing. He stated that his lawyers informed him about Smith’s target letter on Sunday night.

Can Anyone Replace Jeff Van Gundy on ESPN’s Top NBA Crew?

0

Jeff Van Gundy is going to be difficult to replace on the ESPN/ABC NBA telecasts. Love him or not, it was always an entertaining broadcast, with Mark Jackson and Mike Breen. The chemistry that team created was special and didn’t just happen overnight. That’s why bringing someone else into that mix is going to put a strain on the parties that remain intact on the broadcast.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Van Gundy was a part of the latest ESPN cost cutting moves. Last month Van Gundy became the one of the big names let go after 16 years calling the NBA. He had just wrapped up calling the NBA Finals when word came of his ouster, with one-year left on his contract.

Will ESPN/ABC even decide to bring in someone else? It’s one option for the network, but maybe not the best choice. I think fans have gotten used to the three-person booth. I’m not usually into the crowded broadcast, but even I got accustomed to the multitude of voices.

Names have come up already from various insiders. Doc Rivers, JJ Redick and Doris Burke are popular choices to step in, and all could likely do the job. Burke is very well respected in basketball circles and would be a fine choice. Rivers has that kind of been there done that feel to him and Redick while on the rise, may not be quite ready to step into a role on the lead broadcast.

Here’s a few thoughts, on a few of those names, and some other options to consider. There’s some of the obvious and some that may be a little more outside the box.

THE ROOKIES

How often do we see it in baseball? The high priced veteran is released so a young player on a rookie contract can come up. There are plenty of rookies out there that might deserve a chance to show what they’ve got.

I mentioned JJ Redick. He’s been a rising star at ESPN. The credentials are there, since he played in the league and for more than a few teams. He’s been an analyst in several roles at the network and even called a few games in the playoffs this season. Redick was a little green, but got pretty good reviews overall. Having that experience could have been a sign that ESPN was preparing him for an expanded or different role. But will the network stretch him thin or will he be required to give up his podcast, First Take appearances and other studio work to get a spot on the top NBA broadcast team? Would he want to? Of the rookie candidates he’s the most intriguing.

Richard Jefferson is also already at ESPN, which would make for an easy transition. Jefferson is mainly a studio host, but has some experience as a game analyst with ESPN and also on YES’s Nets broadcasts. He has a bold personality, is known to crack a one-liner from time to time. I just wonder if that personality would mesh with the established announcers that are in place right now.

POACH A BIG NAME

It would fly in the face of cost cutting if ESPN/ABC were to do this. Somebody that’s already established as a game analyst isn’t going to come cheap, especially if they are making a leap from a 2nd or 3rd crew to a top one. Somebody like Reggie Miller or Grant Hill, would instantly help that already established broadcast, but neither wouldn’t come cheap.

It would certainly make a splash, if ESPN/ABC were able to pull off something like this. But it doesn’t ensure the new person, who is already established, would be able to assimilate smoothly into the established broadcast. Then there are the optics again. Not good.

THE RETREAD

Doc Rivers is a guy that has done this job at a high level before. He was part of ABC’s coverage of the NBA Finals back in 2004 working with Al Michaels then. While I have no doubt he’d be able to recapture his earlier magic, this is a good opportunity to bring in some new blood. Plus, Rivers won’t come without a high price tag. Again, bad optics.

OTHER NAMES TO CONSIDER

As I just mentioned, this is an opportunity to think outside the box, to approach the broadcast with a clean slate.

I would love to see someone give Candace Parker a bigger shot at this type of job. She made history when she joined the TNT broadcast of the All-Star game in February. She has proven herself more than capable as a studio analyst for NCAA Tournament coverage and for TNT’s Tuesday night NBA coverage. Parker has a terrific personality and looks like she’s having a great time, when I’ve watched her. She seems to work well with those that she is on the set with. It would be great to see her get a chance to expand her role and profile. Parker is more than qualified to step in as well. She’s a tremendous basketball player and brings a ton of experience and great credentials to analyze games.

Doris Burke doesn’t really have to do much more to prove how good she would be in a game analyst role. She already does this on the secondary NBA crew for ESPN/ABC. Normally paired with Mark Jones, Burke provides excellent insight and breakdowns of plays and players. She should be under consideration for the full-time role with the main broadcast for sure.

CONCLUSION

While all of the above names are certainly worthy, I think ESPN/ABC would be wise to just stay the course with the two remaining members of the broadcast. Breen and Jackson work well together and I think would continue the success that has already been built. The two know the NBA landscape very well and are true professionals.

While it will certainly be different without Van Gundy, the broadcast would have a little more room to breathe. I’m not being critical here of JVG, but there was always a lot of chatter with him and Jackson, which can be a bit much at times. To me, two person booths are usually smoother and less cluttered. The broadcast would certainly lose some personality and back and forth, but I think it would survive and do so quite well.

Ride it out for a couple of seasons and see what happens. If you want to have ‘guest’ analysts once in a while, to see how some of these possibilities might work out, go for it.

We’d all find out just how good an analyst Jackson is, without having someone like Van Gundy to play off of. Jackson would also have room to carve out his niche and have more opportunity to analyze. He brings that experience as a player and a former coach in the league, we’d get to hear more of what he knows and thinks in this scenario.

While it was a mistake to get rid of Van Gundy, the game goes on. I think the broadcast in good hands with Breen and Jackson.

6 Tips to Help Make Your Show More Fun

0

Radio is entertainment. Is your show fun? More importantly: are you having fun? I have heard a lot of radio and I am not hearing a lot of fun these days on News/Talk.  Here are some tips to make your show fun.

Before, I give you some tips: Your hardcore audience finds politics and current events interesting and fully entertaining. How many people are represented in that statement?  Probably not a lot. If you have gone to a local political event, how many people are there? Is this a large subset of your audience?

My experience says that it is a tiny percentage of your show’s potential listeners. If this is a large subset of your show’s audience, then you have some issues.

News and Information Are Fun

There is a lot to unpack to make things funny, angering, etc… Some sort of emotional response is fun.

I am not talking about funny, even though may work.

What is the most intriguing thing about the story or topic being discussed?

Is It Funny? Or Can You Make It Funny?

Perhaps you don’t feel like you are funny. This may be. Watch Bill Burr or Dave Chappelle tell a story. There are 3 keys to how they tell a joke. This is not in any particular order. They tell a self-deprecating story, give the story’s set up, and then pounce with the punchline.

If you notice, they almost never laugh at the punchline. They generally pause. Never laugh at your own joke. It is a sign that it is not funny.

If you must laugh, it is always a nervous habit. We have heard politicians like Jeb Bush and Nancy Pelosi tell an audience that they can clap now. That is like laughing at your own punchline.

Sound Like You Are Enjoying Yourself

Now, don’t have a smile on your voice like some music radio jocks. Bring the “Wow”. Find that enjoyment.

Chris Plante is always having fun. You can hear it and it makes him relatable. Talking about the biggest events of the day is fun. Who gets to do that? You do!

Sometimes this is easier if you have someone to bounce off of. Sean Hannity has Linda. She is a foil and has funny comments making fun of Sean. It works in a big way. Sean can be a little serious and has realized that he must be having fun. Linda makes that happen. Sean will make fun of Linda. Serious show that plays and has fun.

There are some hosts who can do an impression or two. Generally, these become a crutch. 35 years ago, if you could do a decent impression, it was highly desirable. I can’t think of a current show that is doing well depending on impressions. People want real. Be real. So many hosts cannot talk about events in their daily lives. Did you see something crazy? Change some of the details to protect the innocent. Make those moments even crazier.

Be real, but remember: This is show business!

Self-Deprecation

A lot of people have real issues with making fun of themselves. I worked for a company that had a syndicated host drop in our studio from time to time. He had a PHD. The guy demanded that we refer to him as “Doctor”. I didn’t. I, in fact, refused to do it. He was completely unable to make fun of himself. He was on the high personal importance hobby horse.

Self-deprecation makes you relatable. Being relatable gives you credibility. We have all either known or worked with blowhards. They are not fun. They have zero ability to relate to anyone.  Making yourself one of the crew is an amazing power.

Be a Man/Woman of the People

Warren Buffet is one of the richest people in the world. There was a big boxing event in Omaha a few years ago. HBO always highlighted celebrities in the crowd. Warren Buffet was not in the front row. He was in the bleachers with the regular people. Didn’t look like he had security. He was one of the people.

I have been very fortunate in meeting and befriending a few ‘famous’ people. I was flying into a city with a “celebrity”. A couple of SUVs pulled up to pick us up. One SUV was full with members of the group. The driver requested that the celebrity sit in the front seat. My celebrity buddy turned that down and sat in the back of the vehicle with the luggage. I have seen some radio personalities demand to be treated well. Be a humble person.

During Prep, Ask Yourself “What Could Make This Fun?”

Find that nugget. Make everything a listener-focused experience. Be holistic. Find those fun details. Especially, when there is a big national story, figure out a way to make it fun. Sometimes that is tough. But, find that “Wow”.

They say to focus on the target demo. Don’t make that group so small that all you have is a dwindling audience. Why do people come to a news/talk station? They do it because they find current events entertaining and fun. There are very few political insiders or those who find that interesting. Your audience wants to know what is going on in the world. They want to be entertained. Make it fun.

Now, if you are worried about how to do it, here is a suggestion: Try stand-up comedy or take an improv class. Taking an improv class is a terrific way to get out of your shell and make some mistakes. This helps all of us grow. Your show should be always evolving and changing because society is.

If there is one thing that I have learned, things are always changing. Be the host that embraces that change.
