Jerry Ferrara Says He Was in Talks With WFAN to Replace Craig Carton

0

For a moment, there was potential that former Entourage actor Jerry Ferrara could have been the one to succeed Craig Carton at WFAN.

That obviously didn’t turn out to be the case, as the station this week announced that Tiki Barber would be joining Evan Roberts for afternoon drive starting July 24.

But last week when a report surfaced indicating that Barber was going to be the guy, Ferrara tweeted that he and the Audacy-owned station had conversations about the opportunity.

Ferrara had filled in hosting for Carton before, and Craig thought Jerry and Evan had good chemistry on the air together. But ultimately Ferrara admitted he probably wasn’t the best fit for the job.

Carton’s final show at WFAN will be next Friday.

Don La Greca Blasts ESPN New York Social Media Staff for Calling Bills ‘New York Team’

0

Whoever is behind the ESPN 98.7 FM New York Twitter account found themselves in the crosshairs of The Michael Kay Show co-host Don La Greca on Thursday.

During the first hour of the show, La Greca referenced a tweet put out by the station right at 3 p.m. when the show began. The tweet asked followers a simple question, which sports team representing New York/New Jersey will win a championship and end the area’s title drought.

The graphic included on the tweet listed 10 teams with their odds. What ticked La Greca off was the fact that the team with the best odds didn’t represent the metro area. It was the Buffalo Bills at +900.

“What is it because they’re technically in New York? Do they get covered by anybody in the metropolitan area?” La Greca asked. “Is there a Post guy, a Daily News guy, is there a radio station that covers the Bills?”

“Who made the list and put the Buffalo Bills on it?” Michael Kay asked.

Even more annoying was the fact that it included a photo of a parade going down New York City’s famed Canyon of Heroes on Broadway. Don pointed out that if the Bills won their first Super Bowl title, New York City certainly wouldn’t throw a ticker-tape parade for them.

“I need to know who put this list together, and I want them on,” he said.

Co-host Peter Rosenberg deduced that it was likely staffer Jake who made the tweet. La Greca expected better.

“If he made it, he had a stroke and should see a doctor,” he said. “Cause he’s not a dumb person. He’s very smart and hard-working.”

Kay was kind of surprised at Don’s stroke comment. He said it reminded him of when he caught flack for calling out another ESPN New York staffer not that long ago.

“You set up an entire segment to eviscerate him,” Kay said. “Now you know what happened the last time we did that with somebody that works here. I got called the worst things of all time.”

La Greca said he wasn’t calling for Jake to be fired, but he just thought that for someone like Jake to make such an error with the tweet, something had to have been wrong.

“I don’t want him to be dumb, because this is dumb,” La Greca said. “But I respect him and he’s a good guy. So I’m hoping there’s a medical issue that obviously will get corrected and he’ll be OK. But I’d rather it be that than him to be dumb because I have too much respect for him.”

Barstool Adds Josh Drew As Senior Talent Producer, Sports

0

Barstool is not the same company it was ten years ago. That is apparent both in the bottom line and as the people become available and seek better employment opportunities.

“Talent is seeking out Barstool,” Debra Duffy, a company spokeswoman told Front Office Sports, “and we have hired from Spotify, META, MLB, Fox Sports, ESPN, and many other competitive companies, spanning all divisions within Barstool.”

Josh Drew will start at Barstool on July 10. He spent the last eleven years at ESPN. His title at Barstool will be Senior Talent Producer, Sports.

Live sports have become a part of the Barstool portfolio in recent years. The company produces 100 live events per year including a college football bowl game, a college basketball invitational, and the FDNY vs NYPD hockey game

Barstool is said to be on the lookout for what happens next at ESPN. With layoffs happening across the Walt Disney Company, Barstool sees this as an opportunity to add to its talent roster.

ESPN employees are not out of the woods just yet. Layoffs at the network are creeping along slowly. More talent are expected to part company with the network, and FOS reports that Barstool is interested to see who is on the market.

“As Barstool continues to be a dominant player in the media space, we have become an employer of choice in tech, media, sports, and entertainment,” Duffy added.

Sean Hannity: The First Time the Radio On-Air Light Went on ‘Changed My Life’

0

Sean Hannity has long been both a radio and television star, but had admitted that radio was his first love.

During a guest appearance on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, Hannity shared his radio origin story after congratulating the pair on their radio success.

“This is a tough business. My radio career started before Clay was born, Buck. 1987 was the first time I was ever behind a mic.”

“The minute that light went on changed my life,” Hannity said. “I had the radio on all the time. I was listening to the great talk radio pioneers in New York…and then I got hired in Huntsville, Alabama. I had a thick New York accent. I’m Sean from New York. College football is not a religion in New York like it is in the rest of the country. I know now because both of my kids were Division I athletes. I went to Alabama and I had no idea about Roll Tide or War Damn Eagle.”

Hannity then said he was ignorant of his accent, but learned to love the south after stops in Huntsville and Atlanta.

“I didn’t even know I had the accent. I learned that I’m a Southerner at heart. I can’t stand New York. I hate it,” admitted Hannity. “I literally became a star because I was that stupid. When I left town, there was an article in the paper that said ‘Goodbye to the talk show host from hell’.”

Travis then asked Hannity how much money he was making at the Huntsville station. He quickly responded that he was earning $19,000 a year.

Bill Handel: TikTok Has Become A Disruptor in Both Marketing and Media

0

TikTok is usually in the news for its close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and the app being banned on government devices. Rarely is it spoken off in a retail sense, but KFI AM-640 morning host Bill Handel says the app is revolutionizing retail.

During his morning program Thursday, the host shared a recent situation with fast-casual restaurant Chipotle, and how TikTok influencer Keith Lee’s custom order altered the business practices of the company.

“So now, Chipotle is overwhelmed by custom orders,” said Handel. “They don’t like it. Why? It takes longer to make. The workers don’t like doing it. It’s a combination of sour cream and their honey vinaigrette that they were running out of. Some staffers just refuse to make it. So what does Chipotle do? ‘Alright, we either give in to TikTok or we risk losing business.’

“Now if you go to Chipotle, they’re up on the menu is a ‘Keithadilla’. You now can buy it because it’s a menu item. TikTok has become unavoidable. For anyone running a consumer-based business, it’s all about TikTok. It’s a force now. A big force in marketing. Marketing and media.”

He continued by mentioning that Abercrombie & Fitch’s chief product officer recently admitted that the company uses TikTok to research upcoming fashion trends.

Mike Golic: ‘Damn Shame What Has Become of ESPN Radio’

0

When Mike Greenberg left ESPN Radio, an era ended. Mike & Mike was the cornerstone of the network for decades. Greeny and partner Mike Golic were a reliable piece for local affiliates even as stars like Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd and Scott Van Pelt moved on.

On Wednesday, news broke that ESPN Radio will soon launch its fourth different morning show since the end of Mike & Mike in 2017. The network will reportedly move on from Keyshawn, JWill and Max.

Golic took to Twitter to bemoan the state of the network.

“Damn shame and very sad what has become of ESPN Radio,” he said in response to The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand breaking the news about the network’s latest morning show.

After Mike Greenberg’s exit, Golic was partnered with his son, Mike Jr, and Trey Wingo. Golic & Wingo ran until July of 2020. That show was replaced by Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin. In May 2021, Zubin Mehenti was replaced by Max Kellerman and the show became Keyshawn, JWill and Max.

Golic has not gone out of his way to criticize or bad-mouth ESPN Radio since leaving the platform. In fact, Jay Williams told Barrett Sports Media in 2020 that Golic was willing to advise him on how to succeed on radio when it was announced that he would be part of the show replacing Golic & Wingo.

“Mike is so great,” Williams told Demetri Ravanos. “He said ‘Look, I have had an incredible run. Just be who you are, Jay. I’ve always had incredible times talking to you and relating to you. Just be the person that is relatable.’”

Marchand reported that a new morning show will be identified soon, but those hosts are expected to come at a much lower cost. ESPN Radio has been hit particularly hard as the Walt Disney Company seeks to eliminate 7000 jobs and reduce costs by $5.5 billion.

Jeff Zucker Likely to Make Bid to Buy CNN This Fall, Report Claims

0

Speculation continues that Warner Bros. Discovery will consider putting CNN up for sale, and former CEO Jeff Zucker could be the leading candidate to purchase the struggling outlet.

According to a report from The New York Post, Zucker is viewed as the leading candidate to place a bid to purchase the cable news channel.

“Jeff is likely going to make a bid this fall to purchase,” said a source with knowledge, while a source close to the former CNN executive said, “I wouldn’t count Zucker out”. The 58-year-old is reportedly holding a grudge about his exit from the company after failing to disclose a consensual relationship with a colleague.

An industry inside claimed that a sale of CNN by Warner Bros. Discovery wouldn’t be out of the question next year, saying the company sees “CNN as a non-core asset. Once Warner reduces its leverage it will be more willing to sell non-core assets including CNN.”

Zucker, who is now the CEO of venture capital firm RedBird IMI, could also be a potential buyer for the CBS television network according to the Post.

Bally Sports Arizona Wants to Drop Diamondbacks Contract

0

A contentious bankruptcy hearing between Major League Baseball (MLB) and Diamond Sports Group (DSG) was carried out after Sinclair Broadcast Group David Smith started to refuse to pay the full value of television rights contracts for various teams without direct-to-consumer additions in an effort to eliminate nearly $8 billion in debt.

In the end, a judge mandated Diamond Sports Group pay the teams afflicted – the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers – the full value of their contracts. Furthermore, Major League Baseball stated that it would be ready to broadcast games at the local level, evinced by the creation of a local media department led by executive vice president and RSN veteran Billy Chambers.

Diamond Sports Group is attempting to nullify the broadcast contract of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The next payment due to the team in its regional sports network deal, which expires in 2035, is on July 1 and is said to cost debtors significant amounts of money.

As a result, lawyers for Diamond Sports Group filed an emergency motion to the Houston bankruptcy judge to void the company’s agreement with the Diamondbacks. If the judge grants the company’s request, it would leave the Arizona Coyotes as the only team with local games televised on Bally Sports Arizona, as the Phoenix Suns intend to broadcast games for free over-the-air and streaming through direct-to-consumer service. That move was blocked by the same bankruptcy judge, Chris Lopez, but is expected to move forward despite a potential request for damages to take place at a later hearing.

“The current costs associated with performing under the Diamondbacks agreement outweigh the revenues the debtors are able to obtain through broadcasting Diamondbacks games,” Diamond Sports Group wrote in a court filing. “As such, the debtors have concluded that the Diamondbacks agreement does not fit within the debtors’ long-term strategic plan and therefore is not necessary to the debtors’ business.”

If Diamond Sports Group is bestowed the ability to tear up the Diamondbacks contract, 40 teams from Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League will remain under contract. The deal allowing Diamond Sports Group to stream NBA games expires at the end of the 2024-25 regular season, the same year in which the national media rights deals expire. The San Diego Padres were the first team to exit its deal with Diamond Sports Group after the company chose not to make a media rights payment after a grace period, and now has its local games produced by Major League Baseball.

John Catsimatidis: WABC Specializes in Bringing People Together

0

77 WABC is celebrating Pride Day on Thursday, and owner John Catsimatidis claims the efforts by the station are the latest in a long life of attempts to unite communities.

During an interview with Sid Rosenberg on Sid and Friends in the Morning, the billionaire owner shared his belief in what the radio station is all about.

“It’s the land of opportunity and the land of the free to do whatever they want,” Catsimatidis said. “WABC specializes in bringing people together, not diving them. That’s the key.”

The Red Apple Media owner’s comments came after he discussed the importance of freedom for Americans and his belief that people should be left alone and free to make whatever decisions they’d like.

Rosenberg added that the attitude presented by Catsimatidis is part of the reason for the recent success of the station.

“We have all these days. I’m being very sincere and genuine — whether we’re talking about St. Patrick Day, Israeli Day here, Greek Day, we have Pride Day today — I think New Yorkers really get a sense of togetherness and that Kum-By-Yah spirit that you and Margo so brilliant have done here,” Rosenberg said of the 77 WABC owner and his wife.

“That’s one of the reasons why the station is doing so well. You’ve got a big heart, John. A big heart.”

Ken Carman: NBA Draft Coverage Falls Short of NFL

0

Thursday night, ESPN will bring viewers comprehensive coverage of the 2023 NBA Draft with broadcasts on its linear, digital and audio platforms, as well as on ABC. Victor Wembayanama is expected to be selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the No. 1 overall pick.

Despite being the second most popular draft on television, a listener told the 92.3 The Fan morning program, The Ken Carman Show, he did not know the NBA Draft was coming until comments made by Brandon Miller. During NBA Draft media coverage, Miller, who is expected to be a top lottery selection, said he believed Los Angeles Clippers guard Paul George was the greatest basketball player of all time, instead of LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Michael Jordan.

“[I] didn’t even know it was Brandon Miller who said that Paul George was the greatest ever,” Ken Carman said. “That’s why they have to have Adrian Wojnarowski – he’s the only recognizable name they have up there to cover the NBA Draft.”

Carman and his co-host Anthony Lima reminisced on the days when ESPN had other people on the air and asserted how they feel coverage of the NFL Draft is more compelling and entertaining.

“I said I don’t think Mel Kiper [Jr.] should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and I’m going to stand by that, but damn is he outstanding,” Carman said. “Because you’d get the six-round and you’d have Mel Kiper Jr. going, ‘Let me tell you something about this fella,’ and he would just rifle it right off and it would be great and his hair was perfectly quaffed…. Now you’ve got them all doing it and they’re there for the NFL, and the NBA’s like, ‘Whatever.’”

Both morning show hosts found the lack of quality coverage as surprising because of the storylines associated with the NBA. ESPN’s First Take is constantly debating the ‘greatness’ of NBA players, and a preponderance of radio shows talk about the league on a near-daily basis. These factors make it somewhat perplexing that NBA Draft coverage is not up to par with the National Football League.

“That’s what makes it confounding that they can’t put together a good broadcast,” co-host Anthony Lima said. “….We can sit here and debate Colin Sexton until we’re blue in the face and he’s played five years in the NBA. Imagine somebody in college who you have a big opinion on and yet they can’t turn it into anything.”

ESPN’s coverage of the 2023 NBA Draft will begin tonight at 8 p.m. EST and feature NBA insiders, commentators and reporters breaking down the action as it occurs. Brian Windhorst and The Hoop Collective will broadcast a live version of their podcast from Barclays Center available to watch on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter and on-demand for audio consumers. ESPN Radio will also have coverage of the event featuring P.J. Carlesimo and Cory Alexander, along with the duo of Kevin Negandhi and Stephen A. Smith on ABC.
