Keyshawn Johnson Will Reportedly Contribute to Undisputed

Keyshawn Johnson will reportedly be a regular contributor to Undisputed throughout the NFL season, according to John Ourand of Sports Business Journal. Johnson was recently laid off by ESPN after the cancellation of his national morning radio show with Jay Williams and Max Kellerman. The former NFL receiver inked a five-year contract with the “Worldwide Leader” last year after having been with the network for parts of 16 years working on its television and radio programming.

At the moment, the only regular contributor formally announced to be joining Undisputed is hip-hop sensation Lil’ Wayne. Recent reports have indicated that Bayless will be joined by Richard Sherman and Rachel Nichols for episodes of the show, which returns to the airwaves on Aug. 28.

Following a suspension from NFL Network and being off the air at ESPN after an accusation of harassment, Michael Irvin was thought to be contributing to Undisputed as part of its commentator lineup to face off against Skip Bayless during the National Football League season.

Yet Sports Business Journal amended its report early Monday afternoon after indicating that Irvin would likely be part of the football panelist rotation, instead stating that it is “unlikely he will have a role.” This expected resolution reportedly follows significant conversations the network had with him about joining its morning debate show.

Irvin had previously had a stint with ESPN before he was let go by the network in February 2007, but was quickly rehired less than a year later to host his own eponymous radio program in Dallas, Texas. Smith has been vocal about wanting to have Irvin back on First Take with him during the football season.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection and Pro Football Hall of Fame member played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. He quickly became a mainstay on ESPN’s First Take during football season, frequently appearing on Mondays with featured commentator Stephen A. Smith. Recent reports indicated that Shannon Sharpe is in discussions to join First Take on Mondays and Tuesdays following his departure from Undisputed, which were followed by Smith affirming that nothing had been officially signed.

FOX Sports declined comment regarding the report of Irvin and Johnson joining the lineup, although the former has since now been identified by Ourand as unlikely to join.

Carman & Lima: We Caused Joe Mixon Media Boycott

Did Anthony Lima ask the question that led Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon to boycott questions from certain reporters this year? He and Ken Carman say that is the obvious conclusion based on what has been reported.

Last week as part of their regular “Around the AFC North” segment, Lima asked Sports Illustrated’s James Rapien if reports of Mixon pointing a gun at a woman would be a distraction for the team. 

Rapien said it wouldn’t be a distraction, but the Bengals are aware of the situation and know it could lead to a suspension for Mixon.

After practice on Sunday, Ben Baby of ESPN reported that Mixon had said that he would not be taking questions this season from a number of outlets, including Sports Illustrated.

“So [Rapien] goes from saying it’s not a distraction to clearly, I think, got off the phone with us and then said, ‘I’ve got to do my job. I’m a journalist in Southwest Ohio ‘or a journalist in, you know, northern Kentucky. Either way, it’s pretty clear that the seeds of discontent are starting right now. They’re starting to grow in Cincinnati,” Lima said Monday morning on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland.

He and Carman reminisced about the reaction they got from journalists in Baltimore last year when Lima suggested Justin Tucker hold out from Ravens camp for a new contract. Lima said that the other teams in the Browns’ division should worry about the show’s ability to sew discontent in locker rooms. 

“It starts out with an innocent question to a beat reporter and from there it spreads. I’d be nervous today. In fact, I wonder if we were to talk to Mo Edgar, who’s also down there [at ESPN 1530] in Cincinnati, if he would even blame James.”

Some people thinkyou need an active presence on social media in order to have success in the media industry. However, that doesn’t mean you have to be the one that necessarily runs the account. Just ask Colin Cowherd, who has a very busy schedule hosting The Herd and running his podcast company, The Volume.

On his own podcast, The Colin Cowherd Podcast, Cowherd mentioned that while his Twitter (X) account is still active on social media, somebody else is running it. 

“We rely to some degree on social media. Initially, when Elon Musk took over Twitter, my takeaway was the media has an agenda, they will be anti-Elon Musk. I’m just going to go in and just watch it develop, not going to take a side. Immediately, too many annoying ads. Soon after that, too many violent videos. Too much stuff was getting through that was gross.”

With Cowherd no longer actively tweeting, it has given him the time to do other things, which includes a side project that he is not ready to reveal just yet. 

“The truth is I have now worked out for 13 straight days for at least an hour, mostly 90 minutes. I have a little passion project on the side, which I won’t disclose now, but I probably will soon in a few months that I developed just because I had more time, and I’ve reconnected with a couple of people I haven’t seen in a while. I thought to myself I was wasting a lot of time staring at my phone.”

As the college football and pro football season are close to getting underway, Cowherd makes it known that if people get too outraged if a team or player doesn’t perform the way that they hoped they would, then they should just take a momentary break from the phone. 

“My point being is we live in this outrage blender. Everything is the end of the world and virtually nothing is. If you have a bad day, a bad team, or a bad moment, stuff is never as bad as you think.”

Clay Travis to Host OutKick Primetime Special on Fox News

OutKick founder Clay Travis is set to host a primetime special on Fox News on Sunday.

Travis will be joined by OutKick hosts Tomi Lahren and Charly Arnolt to “provide their unfiltered opinions on sports, culture, and the topics Americans are talking about right now”.

Additionally, OutKick podcast host Riley Gaines, columnist Mary Katharine Ham, and former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom will appear during OutKick on Fox.

The special marks the first primetime offering for OutKick on Fox News. Both outlets are owned by parent company Fox Corp.

The hour-long special will air on Sunday, August 27th at 10:00 PM ET.

The announcement comes on the heels of the digital outlet touting its success in the month of July. OutKick featured more than 6 million unique visitors during the month. That figure represented an increase of 119% compared to the same time period in 2022.

WTOP has added the Digital Life Hack daily feature from radio host and tech expert Kim Komando.

The station joins a growing list of affiliates for the vignette that will “empower listeners to unlock the full potential of their digital lives, catering to a diverse audience across music and spoken word radio formats”.

“I’m thrilled to join forces with the industry leader, WTOP, to bring invaluable tech insights to their discerning audience,” Komando said in a statement announcing the partnership.

The Dan Patrick Show Broadcasting From Ireland Ahead of Notre Dame-Navy Matchup

Dan Patrick will be taking his show overseas for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic – a marquee matchup between the University of Notre Dame and the United States Naval Academy. The contest takes place at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, Aug. 26 and is among the most highly anticipated college football matchups to kick off the season. In the days leading up to the game, The Dan Patrick Show will broadcast from 9 College Green in the Temple Bar district of the city from Wednesday, Aug. 23 to Friday, Aug. 25.

Throughout the week, Patrick, along with the “Danettes” – including Todd Fritz, Patrick O’Connor, Paul Pabst and Marvin Prince – will present their show on location from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. EST. Moreover, award-winning actor, comedian and producer Will Ferrell will also join the program across its three days in Dublin, providing his perspective on news in the world of sports.

Patrick previously inked a four-year contract extension that will have him continuing to host his eponymous radio show, which is nationally syndicated by Premiere Networks. As previously stated, he expects to retire from the show upon the conclusion of his deal with NBC Sports and iHeartMedia, which runs through the end of 2027. Until that time comes, Patrick will continue to provide listeners with his best and host an informative and entertaining program.

For Notre Dame, the Week 0 matchup is the first under Pete Bevacqua, who is in the midst of shadowing athletic director Jack Swarbrick to take over the position next year. The former NBC Sports chairman is squarely rooted in media rights negotiations between his former company and the university. Furthermore, the latter reportedly considering forgoing its independence should it be unable to attain its desired contract. For reference, the existing deal expires at the conclusion of the 2023 football season and includes the rights to broadcast all Notre Dame home games.

Gregg Giannotti: ‘Marconi Awards Will Likely Honor Posthumous DJ Over Boomer & Gio’

Legendary Chicago-based DJ Lin Brehmer of WXRT passed away earlier this year after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer, something that was unbeknownst to Gregg Giannotti at WFAN. Giannotti and co-host Boomer Esiason are up for the Marconi Award for “Major Market Personality of the Year,” but it seems they did not realize that they would be going up against Brehmer in the category. Because of Brehmer’s passing, Giannotti expressed on the air that he does not believe the show stands much of a chance to win the prestigious industry honor.

“Unfortunately, I found out [that] one of the people we’re going up against has passed away,” Giannotti said Monday morning on WFAN, “so chances are, I would think they’re going to go with the posthumous award to that person.”

Show producer Al Dukes agreed with the notion, saying that the program should send friend of the show Big Zoo to accept the award just in case the duo wins the award. Update anchor Jerry Recco, filling in for Esiason as host, demurred and thought that just because the nominee is deceased does not mean that they are guaranteed to win the award.

“You could give him a lifetime achievement award,” postulated Recco. “You could do that, which would be a very nice thing to do that night.”

Giannotti remembered Heath Ledger winning an Oscar in the “Best Supporting Actor” category for his role in the movie, The Dark Knight, after passing away because of a drug overdose. Ledger’s family took to the stage and accepted the award on his behalf, providing an emotional moment for everyone in the room and watching from afar. Although the show is yearning to win the award, Giannotti would understand if it went to Brehmer.

“Wouldn’t you feel the same way if you were voting on this; you were in the room determining who was going to win that the person who had passed away you’d probably have to give the award to?,” Giannotti asked. “Don’t you think so?”

“Yes, I think that there is a very good possibility of that,” Recco said.

CBS News Poll: Republican Voters Have Strong Trust in Conservative Media

A new CBS News poll of Republican voters has revealed several takeaways. However, conservative media pundits could find positives in one of the poll’s answers.

According to the findings, 71% of Donald Trump voters believe that what the former President “tells you is true”. 63% responded similarly when asked about their friends and family.

When asked if conservative media figures are telling the truth, 56% responded “yes”. That figure is higher than the 42% of respondents who believed that religious leaders are telling them the truth.

Additionally, when like Republican primary voters were asked about media coverage surrounding the 2024 campaign, 50% responded that there has been too much coverage centered on Trump. Meanwhile, 31% claimed Trump coverage has been the right amount. 19% said there has not been enough coverage about the former President.

The polling from CBS News took place last week and sampled responses from more than 500 “likely Republican primary voters”.

CNN Hires Arit John As National Politics Reporter

The Los Angeles Times correspondent Arit John has been announced as the latest hire by CNN to cover the 2024 Presidential campaign.

John has plenty of political coverage during her long media career. In 2016, she exclusively covered the campaign of Bernie Sanders for Bloomberg News as he chased the Democratic nomination. She also covered both houses of Congress for Bloomberg.

In addition to her work at The Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg, John has written for The Wire, The Atlantic, and The New York Times.

While in Los Angeles, John covered national politics for the west coast audience, including the 2020 Presidential election and the 2022 midterms.

She is the latest in a string of hirings by CNN as the 2024 Presidential campaign heats up. In recent weeks, the network has hired Jamal Simmons as a political commentator, Chloe Melas as an entertainment reporter, Tim Carter as Executive Producer of CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Daniel Strauss as a national political reporter, and Kayla Tausche as Senior White House Correspondent, among others.

A southern California native, John will be based in Washington D.C. for her new role with CNN.

Scott Van Pelt, Marcus Spears, Ryan Clark Joining Monday Night Countdown

Following layoffs of prominent on-air talent, ESPN has been working to find a new host for Monday Night Countdown. The signature pregame show airs before Monday Night Football each week on ESPN, which is entering its second season with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman as its lead commentary team. ESPN has reportedly named longtime SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt as Suzy Kolber’s successor to host the program. As part of the transaction, Van Pelt has signed a new multiyear deal with the company that will see him continue to host the late-night edition of SportsCenter on most weeknights.

Van Pelt initially repudiated reports of him joining the program on The Dan Patrick Show, stating that there had been no official job offer made to him. During the interview, he did not deny that it would not be a possibility, nor did he impugn potential interest. While the initial report seemed presumptuous, it can be discerned that conversations have been had leading to the promotion. He was reportedly in consideration with NFL Live host Laura Rutledge, although the breadth of the network’s search is ostensibly unknown.

Now, Van Pelt will be hosting Monday Night Countdown pregame and postgame, followed by a live SportsCenter from the site of the contest.

Van Pelt will be joined by returning analyst Robert Griffin III on the panel, along with insider Adam Schefter and features reporter Michelle Beisner-Buck. They will all regularly provide their insights and perspectives on news around the league. The show is also adding two new analysts, both of whom are frequent contributors across its portfolio of studio programming.

Marcus Spears is a fixture on the studio program, NFL Live, and has quickly become one of the network’s more heavily utilized personalities. He joined ESPN in 2014 to work on the SEC Network as a college football analyst but saw his role begin to change in 2019. Upon joining NFL Live in 2019, Spears began lending his voice to shows such as Get Up, First Take and SportsCenter, in addition to hosting a podcast with Kendrick Perkins. Spears will now further refine his role at the Monday Night Countdown desk, traveling to the site of the featured game. Prior to his time with the “Worldwide Leader,” he played defensive end for nine seasons in the NFL after winning two national championships with the LSU Tigers in college.

Set to join Spears will be Ryan Clark, a 13-year NFL veteran and former Super Bowl champion. On the day Clark announced his retirement from the sport, he joined ESPN and became a studio analyst across its slate of programming. He has worked with Spears in the past on shows such as NFL Live and First Take, and has continued to serve as a trusted voice as it pertains to football analysis. Clark will join Van Pelt on the late-night SportsCenter from the site of the game each week. In addition to Spears and Clark, analysts Larry Fitzgerald Jr. and Alex Smith will make multiple appearances throughout the regular season.

Two-time Super Bowl champion Booger McFarland is not among the show’s cast, ending his three-year tenure with the show. McFarland has worked on various ESPN football programs throughout his time with the company, which began in 2014, including SportsCenter, NFL PrimeTime and the NFL Draft.

The premiere of Monday Night Countdown takes place on Aug. 21 ahead of a preseason matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST and will include Van Pelt, Spears, Clark and the rest of the cast. The matchup is the only preseason game on ESPN’s docket and will be called by Buck and Aikman.

The first regular season edition of Monday Night Countdown will take place ahead of the New York Jets season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 11. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. EST/3 p.m. PST on ESPN ahead of kickoff just after 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST.
