97.1 The Freak Adds North Texas Mean Green Football

A little more than eight months since making the switch to sports talk, 97.1 The Freak in Dallas is adding college football play-by-play to its portfolio. The University of North Texas announced Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with iHeartMedia Dallas to make the station the radio home of Mean Green football starting with the upcoming season.

The deal is for three seasons, running through 2025-26.

“The Freak is the newest and most unique media outlet to serve the Dallas/Fort Worth market,” iHeartMedia Dallas region president Paul Corvino. “It’s the perfect home for Mean Green football and we proudly welcome them to iHeart Dallas.”

Dave Barnett will call play-by-play with Hank Dickenson returning for his 28th season to do color commentary.

The Mean Green open the 2023 season at home against California on September 2 at 4 p.m. eastern.

The Freak is also the radio home of the Dallas Mavericks. Their games have aired on 97.1 since the 2021-22 season, when it was still a music station known as The Eagle.

Fox News ‘Addressed’ Employee After Graphic Called Joe Biden ‘Wannabe Dictator’

A graphic shown by Fox News Tuesday raised eyebrows, with the network addressing the situation Wednesday.

At the end of Fox News Tonight, the network showed both former President Donald Trump addressing supporters and current President Joe Biden speaking at the White House simultaneously. A graphic then aired that read “Wannabe Dictator Speaks at the White House After Having His Political Rival Arrested”.

The graphic was only on air briefly before it was pulled. In a statement, a Fox News spokesperson said “The chyron was taken down immediately and was addressed”.

While Fox News Tonight is an opinion-based show, the graphic was accompanied by the Fox News Alert banner, which is primarily used for breaking news.

Former President Donald Trump was arrested and arraigned on 37 counts in regard to his mishandling of classified documents after his presidency concluded at a Miami courthouse Tuesday. The event garnered dozens of hours of live cable news coverage.

TSN 1050 Drops Leafs Lunch As Part of Bell Media Cutbacks

What do Maple Leafs fans do now when they want daily coverage of the team? As part of layoffs and cutbacks across Bell Media, TSN 1050 in Toronto has dropped Leafs Lunch from its lineup.

Co-hosts Julia Tocheri and Mike DiStefano have not been let go. Tocheri will still work on the company’s digital platform Bardown and on TSN’s CHL coverage. DiStefano has a number of other roles at the network.

“It’s a tough day on everybody, even those that remain at the station,” Jim Tatti, who was guest hosting Game Play on the station Wednesday, said. “It’s not easy to navigate a day like this. It’s a tough day for families, right across the country.”

A similar move was made in Ottawa. TSN 1200 cancelled In the Box with Steve Lloyd halfway through the Wednesday show.

Bell Media seeks to eliminate 1300 jobs through layoffs and leaving positions unfilled. Achieving that goal has included shutting down six stations, including Edmonton’s TSN 1260.

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star reports that Leafs Lunch is the only casualty for TSN 1050. The rest of the lineup remains unchanged.

Sean Hannity Personally Sent Gavin Newsom Message That Led to Fox News Interview

Earlier this week, Fox News host Sean Hannity featured a long interview with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), to discuss several wide-ranging topics.

The interview marked Newsom’s first appearance on the network since 2010, when he was serving as the mayor of San Francisco.

A report from Politico claims Hannity had personally reached out to Newsom and offered to host the interview. “Hannity noted that the two men — both silvering Irish Catholics — had known each other for years. He wanted to sit down and chat about real issues, mano-a-mano,” the report stated.

During the interview, Newsom admitted that he watches Hannity’s program.

“We need more of these kind of conversations,” Newsom said. “We need to not just accuse each other of misleading the American people, but I think confront each other in the context of providing opportunities to address some of the facts that are often omitted in terms of the conversations and topics we choose to pick up.”

According to early Nielsen reports, the interview was watched by nearly 2 million viewers Monday evening.

Mike Taylor Exits Ticket 760

San Antonio sports talk radio is going to sound a little different. Mike Taylor announced on Wednesday that he had left Ticket 760.

“This is not a bit. Last Friday’s show that I hosted was my last one on Ticket 760 and iHeart Radio,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. “Fifteen and a half years. This is not a bit that was it.”

Taylor had been with the iHeartMedia station for over 15 years. That time span included multiple stints where he was living somewhere else and doing the show remotely. Most recently, that place was Hawaii.

Two years ago, iHeart showed commitment to growing the show, putting it on 1300/103.1 FM The Zone in Austin.

“My show’s not done,” Taylor said. “I’m simply moving everything over to my YouTube stuff starting next week. Monday through Friday, Mike Taylor Live on Love Ya Hard TV will still be a big old thing. I’m excited about where that thing can go now.”

In addition to sports content, Taylor will be working with his girlfriend Nina Duran on the lifestyle show Pickles for Dinner. New episodes of that show come out every Thursday.

“So I’m not dead,” he said assuring his listeners they will still hear plenty of him in San Antonio. “I’m not leaving. I’m just no longer on The Ticket.”

Mark Simone ‘Honored’ to Be Nominated For Radio Hall of Fame

The Radio Hall of Fame announced its 2023 nominees Wednesday, and 710 WOR host Mark Simone has shared his appreciation for being included.

In a tweet, Simone shared the letter he was sent by the Museum of Broadcast Communications alerting him to his nomination.

“Thanks so much to the committee for this wonderful honor. I’ve been on the radio in New York since the day I graduated from college and have been blessed to have worked with the greatest radio stars in history,” Simone wrote. “There are a few hundred other radio giants I’ve been lucky enough to work  with along the way, all great mentors and teachers, and of course all the great programming execs, producers, and engineers I’ve been surrounded by.”

Simone was not the only news/talk radio personality included in the list of nominees. KFI AM-640 hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, former 1010 WINS morning news anchor Lee Harris, and longtime conservative radio host Larry Elder were also included in the 24-person list of potential inductees.

TSN 1260 Suddenly Goes Off Air As Bell Media Enters Layoffs

In the middle of its morning programming, TSN 1260 Edmonton abruptly went off the air as a part of Bell Media’s planned adaptation for how the company disseminates information. At the moment, the company has ceased operations of six radio stations across the country and is selling an additional three. Moreover, 1,300 positions, which equates to 6% of Bell Media’s staff, have either been laid off or will go unfilled, marking another drastic and sudden blow to the job security of those working in media. The move is occurring because of changes in regulatory conditions and innovations in the media landscape, which the company has argued makes such decisions necessary.

“It’s a consolidation of news gathering [and] news delivery,” said Bell Canada Enterprises vice president Robert Malcolmson. “We are combining the news production function in a horizontal way so that you have one common platform that is serving news to the relevant outlet from one management team.”

Staff affected by the job cuts will be notified this week, which comes after Bell Canada Enterprises President and CEO Mirko Bubic divulged that the entity expects to lose over $250 million in legacy phone revenue. Its news operations currently produce a $40 million loss.

Bell Media is the latest North American company to announce job cuts, as the media industry has laid off over 17,000 employees in the United States in 2023 alone. That figure is the highest year-to-date mark on record, surpassing job cuts in 2020, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. Other stations affected by Bell’s changes include Calgary’s Funny 1060, Vancouver’s BNN Bloomberg Radio 1410 and London NewsTalk 1290 among many others. Bell Media previously shuttered radio sports stations in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Hamilton during job cuts in 2021.

The stunning and haste turn of events occurred during a top of the hour break, and it came out of the commercial announcing the closure of the radio station and the immediate cessation of all programming. It had been broadcasting in the all-sports format since its launch as The Team 1260 in 2002, and its official Twitter account has been deleted.

“The realities of AM radio in the broadcast media landscape have made this change unavoidable,” the station said in a statement. “We want to thank our advertising partners, sponsors and everyone who has contributed to this station over the years. But, we especially want to thank you – our listeners. Thank you for welcoming TSN 1260 into your homes, cars and lives for so many years.”

How CNN Used High Schoolers to Report on Donald Trump Arraignment

A federal judge ruled that no electronic devices of any kind — including television news cameras — were allowed in the Miami courthouse where former President Donald Trump was arraigned Tuesday. Still, CNN found a way to get updates to reporters and on the air.

CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy claimed in his Reliable Sources newsletter that the network — at the behest of senior coordinating producer and Miami native Noah Gray — called a former teacher that leads the television production program at Palmetto Senior High School and asked if the teacher knew of any students available to work in the courthouse Tuesday.

Several students were brought in to work with reporters Hannah Rabinowitz and Tierney Sneed.

According to Darcy, “As the hearing unfolded and developments transpired, Sneed and Rabinowitz jotted down their reporting on notepads, tearing off sheets with urgent news, and handing it to one of the students. The students then ran the reporting to one of their classmates who was standing by at one of the courthouse’s only two pay phones.”

“In all my years of field producing, never have I been involved in an operation as complex as this literal game of professional telephone,” Gray said.

CNN was part of a media coalition that included NPR to ask the federal court to allow news cameras in the courtroom. However, Judge Jonathan Goodman argued that “allowing photographs would undermine the massive security arrangements put in place.”

Steak Shapiro: If Undisputed Was Relevant, I’d Know How to Find FS1

You won’t find Steak Shapiro shedding a tear, happy or sad, over Shannon Sharpe’s last day on FS1’s Undisputed. He did not mince words on Wednesday when discussing Tuesday’s episode of the show.

“‘A grand tradition in the history of sports casting and sports television said no one about Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe on Undisputed,’ the host of The Steakhouse on 92.9 the Game in Atlanta said. “Nice show, I guess, for FS1. Shannon Sharpe is leaving, okay, after seven years. Let’s not pretend this is some, you know, amazing moment.”

He also took exception to Bayless saying that he and Sharpe proved critics wrong with the success of their show. Shapiro said if that were true, he would know where to find it.

“You don’t even register. I don’t even know where FS1 is except for the Major League playoffs.”

Co-host Rusty Mansell agreed. He said that in a world crowded with debate shows, Undisputed rarely gets his attention.

“When do they move the needle?” Shapiro asked facetiously. “You know when they move the needle? When Skip Bayless says something really, really offensive and almost gets canceled.”

Questions surround the future of Undisputed. The show is expected to continue, but FS1 has not settled on a new permanent opponent for Skip Bayless.

John Kobylt: Sean Hannity Hosts a ‘Lazy Show’

Fox News host Sean Hannity welcomed Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to his program for a sitdown interview Monday. KFI AM-640 host John Kobylt shared his displeasure with both figures Tuesday.

During John and Ken, Kobylt took issue with an answer Newsom gave about the number of citizens moving from California to other states. He then argued that the response from the governor deserved strong pushback from Hannity that never came.

“What Hannity should have done is blown the whistle to stop him. Instead, he let Newsom babble and babble,” Kobylt said. “I’ve never thought much of Hannity as a host or an interviewer.”

“I don’t think he does a lot of interviews where he challenges people,” co-host Ken Chiampou agreed. “I think he has folks on that they’re kinda going down the same path he is.”

“They’ll do 20 minutes of filibustering about the same stuff they talked about the night before,” continued Kobylt. “I listened to Hannity’s radio show once, where it was just 20 minutes of Newt Gingerich. Just going on and on and on. I thought Hannity had left the room or moved out.

“It’s not a well-researched show. It’s a lazy show. There’s nothing lazier than letting Gavin Newsom read from a list of prepared statistical accomplishments that somebody at the chamber of commerce hands out…it’s just a bad question and bad handling of a ridiculous answer.”
