Brent Axe Launching New Syracuse Sports Podcast

Brent Axe, a native of Syracuse, N.Y. and columnist at Syracuse.com, is starting his own podcast with the company to cover local sports in the area. The project, titled Syracuse Sports with Brent Axe, launches next week and will include guests ranging from those on the field to the people covering the game. Axe is known for his compelling opinions and shrewd intellect, and he will be bringing both of those factors to the airwaves to discuss sports in the Central region of New York.

“We’re going to talk about the topics that you are most passionate about when it comes to Syracuse sports – Syracuse football; Syracuse basketball; the local sports topics that you want to hear about, we’re going to have them on Syracuse sports,” Axe said. “We are going to have some fun. We’re going to do drafts; we’re going to have lists and conversations and topics unlike you’ve heard on the Syracuse sports scene.”

Axe is a former radio host who has been with a variety of local and national outlets, including The Score 1260, ESPN Radio Syracuse and SiriusXM. Galaxy Media Partners owns ESPN Radio Syracuse and ended Axe’s radio program with the entity in March after the show conveyed a feeling of pessimism towards the university’s teams. He had been with the outlet for parts of nine years and gained a following both locally and abroad.

In an interview with Syracuse.com, Axe’s full-time employer, Galaxy Chief Executive Officer Ed Levine expressed his sentiments towards the decision to move on from the popular media personality. Within his remarks, he expressed how former Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim is an investor in his company. Galaxy broadcasts Syracuse football, lacrosse and basketball contests and has been partnered with the venerable university since 2007 as the flagship station for the Syracuse Sports Network at Learfield.

“We’ve called it pretty fair, and I would argue we’ve been tough on Syracuse University when the on-field or off-field events warrant it,” Levine said at the time. “I think over the past six months it took a different tone and became overly dark and negative. I don’t think that’s what Syracuse fans want to hear.”

Axe is excited to launch his new program and described more about the content of the show in a two-minute introductory clip posted across various platforms. Within the clip, he stressed how the show will do things differently than mainstream sports coverage and implement its audience.

“There is going to be a fun and unique way – I don’t want to give it away quite yet; you will find out soon enough – but there is going to be a really fun way that you are going to be a part of this show,” Axe said. “You are going to be a huge part of this show – your questions; your interactions and the way that you are going to shape the content and the conversation of the show.”

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Partners With WABE for Daily Political Show

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has partnered with public radio station 90.1 WABE to move its Politically Georgia program to a daily show.

The current podcast features reporters Greg Bluestein, Patricia Murphy, and Washington correspondent Tia Mitchell. The program has hired veteran host Bill Nigut to join the program as it expands to five days a week.

“Georgia is a crucial state that is entering a crucial election season. Our citizens need a forum for sanity, reason and to break down the events of the day,” Nigut said. “I’m honored to join the ranks of the AJC reporters and editors I’ve admired over the course of my career at a time when the paper is doubling down on its coverage across the South – and airing the show on WABE 90.1 will broaden our reach even more.”

Nigut has hosted Political Reward for Georiga Public Broadcasting for the past nine years.

The show will air live at 10:00 AM on 90.1 WABE, and continue to live in its current podcast form.

“This partnership is a great opportunity for WABE and the AJC to collaborate on a high-quality, informative radio show that will serve the needs of the Greater Atlanta area,” WABE President Jennifer Dorian said.

Mark Tauscher Named Lead Radio Analyst For Wisconsin Badgers

94.5 ESPN Milwaukee host Mark Tauscher has been named the new lead radio analyst for Wisconsin Badgers football broadcasts.

Tauscher, a former Badger and Green Bay Packer, joined the school’s broadcast team in 2012 as a second analyst alongside Matt Lepay and Mike Lucas. Lucas, however, retired in May, leading Tauscher to the top spot.

“The energy around this upcoming Badger football season is electric and I’m excited to be a part of the soundtrack of Wisconsin football along with the legend Matt Lepay this fall,” Tauscher said.

After beginning his Wisconsin career as a walk-on, Tauscher started 12 games at right tackle for the Badgers during Ron Dayne’s Heisman Trophy-winning campaign in 1999.

“Tausch is a Badger through and through and brings a perfect combination of football knowledge and media savvy,” UW Director of Athletics Chris McIntosh said in a press release.

“He has developed into a true professional in the broadcasting world and has the perspective of a former Wisconsin football player and Packer legend that our fans will enjoy. I’m excited about all the ways he’ll be able to engage with our fans and bring an inside look at our football program.”

In addition to his work with the Badger Radio Network, Mark Tauscher co-hosts The Wilde and Tausch Show, which airs in both Madison and Milwaukee. He previously served as a pregame and postgame analyst on the Green Bay Packers Radio Network from 2011 to 2018.

SportsMap Radio Adding Luke Mauro to ‘The Sports Kings’

Beginning Monday, August 28th, SportsMap Radio will add Luke Mauro to the network’s The Sports Kings.

Mauro joins the show after serving as midday host on ESPN 98.9 in Charleston, SC. He also previously worked as the football and men’s basketball radio play-by-play voice for The Citadel.

“The opportunity to work with Gow Media, and take my voice to the national level, on one of the most affiliated networks, was a no-brainer,” said Mauro.

The Sports Kings is currently hosted by “Mean” Gene Thompson from 4:00-6:00 PM ET.

“Luke is a tremendous broadcaster,” said Gow Media COO and Program Director Craig Larson.
“He’s someone who’s been on our radar for quite some time. I think pairing him with Gene will be a perfect mix of hard-hitting sports talk with extremely charismatic personalities.”

Additionally, SportsMap Radio is preparing to bring back three seasonal programs during football season. The Boss and The Gloss — featuring David Gow and Carla Dawson will be heard on Mondays from 6:00-8:00 PM ET. The Big E with Elissa Walker returns for its 10th season on Saturdays from 3:00-5:00 PM ET. Finally, College Football Weekly, hosted by Brian Schaible, returns to run from 4:00-6:00 AM ET on Saturday mornings.

107.5 The Fan Adds Andy Sweeney for Mornings, Jake Query Moving to Middays

107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis is shuffling its daily lineup, with changes coming to both its morning and midday shows.

Former ESPN Louisville afternoon host Andy Sweeney has joined the station to pair with current morning co-host Kevin Bowen. The Wake Up Call with KB & Andy will begin on Monday, August 21st. Sweeney departed ESPN 680 and 93.9 The Ville late last month.

“I’ve chatted with him before this show,” Bowen said of Sweeney. “Very, very talented. Seems like a great dude. And I’ve heard great things from people that have worked either in that market or with him.”

Sweeney added, “I have long admired The Fan and its hosts. I can’t wait to work with Kevin. He’s a terrific sports personality and journalist. This is a dream job”.

With the change to the station’s morning show, Jake Query will move to the station’s midday show from 12:00-3:00 PM. Query and Company will fill the shoes vacated by the exit of longtime midday host Dan Dakich in December of last year.

During the announcement, Query noted that the morning radio schedule was difficult for him, adding that he looked forward to not waking up while it was still dark.

“There are going to be a number of people — I think ultimately, it will be a two-person show — but for now, we’ll just be utilizing the talents and the contributions of a number of different people,” Query said of his new program. “I look forward to those people and working with them from noon to three. And for you guys, look, I’ve loved every minute of working with you guys and having fun with it. But when that was brought to me, I was invigorated by it.”

“I’ve been pretty proud of what we have built over the last two years. And I’ve really enjoyed working with you. I obviously did not know you super well by any means before we started but I think you’ve helped me grow and I think it’s been a pretty good lesson,” Bowen said of Query.

The Fan spent the past few months looking at a number of options to find the right fit to move the brand forward. By adding Sweeney, a former PD and drive time host with deep roots in Indiana (graduated from Jeffersonville HS), and a strong Hoosier and Colts connection, and moving Query to middays, where local listeners are already familiar with his thoughtful commentaries and charismatic personality, the station has positioned itself for future success.

“This line-up adjustment underscores our dedication to bringing our listeners the best in local sports radio”, commented Operations Manager, David Wood. “Both ‘Query & Company’ and ‘The Wake-Up Call with KB & Andy’ will become essential listening for Indiana sports fans.”

Amy Chodroff Exiting KLIF in Dallas

KLIF morning co-host Amy Chodroff has announced that she is preparing to exit radio.

“After 20 years on the air in Dallas, most recently as co-host of DFW’s Morning News with Dave and Amy on KLIF, I’m ready for a new chapter!” Chodroff wrote in a post on Facebook.

Chodroff has been partnered with Dave Williams for the past 12 years on the program.

In her announcement, she thanked her co-workers and those who had mentored and guided her throughout her radio career.

“Thank you to the countless news and program directors who helped me over my 35-year radio career. (You know who you are.) I’ve met and worked with so many wonderful, talented people during my broadcasting journey and I’ve interviewed a lot of cool folks too!”

Chodroff added that she has been planning to leave the station for the past eight months and labeled it as “100% my decision”. She continued by saying “Everyone tells me there is life after radio and I’m excited to find out.”

Chodroff concluded that she is open to any and all opportunities. Her final day at KLIF will be Friday, September 8th.

John Lund: Raiders’ Treatment of Greg Papa ‘Stupid and Immature’

The San Francisco 49ers and the Las Vegas Raiders are holding joint training camp practices in Vegas ahead of their preseason game on Sunday, and KNBR host John Lund is not thrilled with how the Raiders are treating co-host and former Raiders play-by-play voice Greg Papa.

Papa was removed as the radio voice of the Raiders ahead of the 2018 season as he and team owner Mark Davis had an ongoing feud. Papa is now the voice of the Niners. He signed a long-term extension with the team last year to remain the play-by-play voice through the 2028 season.

As Papa was on location covering the joint practices for KNBR, Raiders staff restricted some of his access to the field and areas of the Raiders facility. Lund said on Papa & Lund Thursday that it was silly that the Raiders haven’t let bygones be bygones.

“They’re being extremely petty. The league should know that,” Lund said. “It’s stupid.”

Lund knows that Davis likely had a hand in how Papa has been treated at the practices. He said Mark is acting like a petulant child and needed to move on.

“Dude, you’re an immature idiot,” Lund said. “Get over it.”

Papa and Davis found each other at odds over comments Papa made in 2015 as the team interviewed former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan for the Oakland vacancy. He said he vehemently opposed the team considering Shanahan for the role as a show of solidarity for Al Davis. Mark’s father and original owner of the Raiders had a decades-long feud with Shanahan.

Lund said everyone knows the backstory and why the Raiders staff are doing what they’re doing. He just felt the need to speak out in support of his friend and colleague for being treated unfairly.

“He can’t say it. He’s not saying it. I’m saying it. It’s stupid,” he said. “It’s immature. Some intern is telling a guy who was the voice of the Raiders for 21 years, ‘Sir, sir, get off the grass. Sir, sir, you can’t use those binoculars. Sir, sir, the rest of the media can go here, but you can’t.’

“What a joke. It makes your organization look stupid and petty,” Lund added. “Just like John Angelos of the Orioles. Come on. How ridiculous is this?”

Craig Carton: I Was Taken Out of Context By My Own Show

FS1 host Craig Carton found himself in a unique situation earlier this week when he corrected a piece of content his show’s Twitter put out.

On Tuesday, Carton was debating whether or not New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones would be considered elite at the end of the 2023 season. Craig said he wouldn’t consider Jones a top-10 QB in the NFL. He gave a number of names of other quarterbacks in the league that would easily rank ahead of Jones.

Not long after the segment on The Carton Show on Tuesday, the show’s Twitter published a now-deleted tweet that had quarterbacks ranked from 1-10 and a clip of Carton talking about Jones.

But Craig Carton took issue with what was presented. He later tweeted that the show account took him out of context.

“For whatever it is worth (not much I’m sure) I never ranked the QB’s this morning. The post that was put out was 100% out of context and not at all what I said,” Carton wrote. “For the record, Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the world. Go back to whatever you were doing.”

Carton didn’t specifically rank the quarterbacks, but he did list them. So the show account compiling a ranking wasn’t completely out of order. But, in addition to the original tweet misspelling Aaron Rodgers, it’s not the best look when the show host publicly takes issue with something his social media team put out there.

Buck Sexton: No One Will Ever Again Have the Influence of Rush Limbaugh

Some still regard Rush Limbaugh as the most influential media figure of all time, including one of the men who replaced him on the radio. Buck Sexton, co-host of The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, sat down with Mediate to discuss Limbaugh’s impact on the business. 

Rush Limbaugh, whose show was syndicated on Premiere Networks and broadcast on over 700 radio affiliates, passed away in February 2021 after battling lung cancer. At its peak, the show attracted over 15 million weekly listeners.

“Rush wasn’t just a radio host. I mean, he was really a one-man media and political phenomenon. I think even his detractors would have to concede that,” said Sexton,” And he was a force in the media, in American politics for decades.” 

Buck Sexton and Clay Travis are involved with other projects as well. Travis is still involved with OutKick, a brand he founded. Sexton makes frequent appearances on Fox News Channel. 

“There has not been, and I will honestly say I don’t think there will be in my lifetime, anybody who was able to have, as a single individual doing a show, that level of influence on the conservative movement, on Republican politics,” added Sexton. 

The Rush Limbaugh Show aired nationwide in 1988 through syndication, then later on network radio in 1997 when its syndicator was absorbed into Premiere Networks.

Kevin Slaten Returns to 590 The Fan in St. Louis

For the first time in seven years, and for the sixth time overall, Kevin Slaten will be heard on sports radio airwaves in St. Louis.

The Post-Dispatch on Thursday reported Slaten will be on 590 The Fan.

Slaten, one of the sports talk pioneers in St. Louis, will be paired with Nate Lucas and Bob Ramsey.

Beginning Monday, August 14th, Slaten and Ramsey will host from noon-2, and then Ramsey will join from 2-3 p.m.

“I’m excited to be back. I’m happy to hold people accountable, that’s what we do. And people can hold me accountable as well,” Slaten told The Post-Dispatch.

“To me, that’s the way it always should be and always will be. If people aren’t ready, here we come anyway. If I were (Missouri football coach) Eli Drinkwitz or (Cardinals manager) Oli Marmol, I would be on my toes.”
