Craig Carton: ‘John Sterling is a Man’s Man’

New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling was in the news over the weekend after being struck by a foul ball while calling a game on WFAN. On Monday’s edition of Carton & Roberts, co-hosts Craig Carton and Evan Roberts sang Sterling’s praises for his composure and dedication to carrying on the rest of the contest.

Carton said Sterling showed some real grit in the broadcast booth.

“That is a man’s man right there,” Carton said. “That is a guy that should be broadcasting hockey games and football games. He’s tougher than Giancarlo Stanton is!”

Evan chimed in saying that he watched the now viral video of Sterling being hit in the head by the baseball several times to take his mind off a dismal stretch of games by his beloved New York Mets.

“It’s the only thing that brought a smile to my face,” Roberts said. “So thank you, John, for being OK, cause I obviously wouldn’t be laughing if he wasn’t.”

Carton did wonder, though, that in that situation how Sterling managed to be caught off guard by the ball coming right for the open window in the booth.

“If you’re watching the foul ball coming towards ya, how did you not see it coming in your direction and hit ya?” he asked.

Roberts said Sterling appeared to glance down at his scorebook as he was making the call and lost track of the ball. He felt like it was a lapse in baseball fundamentals.

“You have to keep your eye on the ball until the bitter end,” he said. “John, the scorecard will be there five seconds later. I can promise you.”

Joe Murray Lands Night Show as 98.5 The Sports Hub Expands Roster

Beasley is adding to the staff at 98.5 The Sports Hub. The Boston station announced new and expanded roles for three people including Joe Murray.

Murray has contributed to multiple day parts during his time with The Sports Hub. He will now take over the night show, which was vacated by Adam Jones earlier this year. That role will also see him anchoring coverage of the Bruins and Celtics.

Currently, Murray serves as a key component of The Sports Hub’s gambling coverage. He is also part of the station’s New England Patriots postgame show.

LeRoy Irvin is expanding his role as well. He will move into the seat on the Patriots postgame show vacated by Murray. He will also continue serving as a weekend host and as co-host of sister station Hot 96.9’s The Get Up Crew.

The Sports Hub is also adding Cerrone Battle to the lineup. He has been seen on NBC Sports Boston and heard on The Play Action Podcast. He will contribute to night and weekend programming.

“Joe, Leroy and Cerrone all grew up in Boston and, like our listeners, have an engrained passion for sports,” Program Director Rick Radzik said in a press release.  “It’s nice to see Joe’s many years of dedication pay off, have Leroy’s role at the station elevated, and hear Cerrone once again in his hometown. I’m happy for all three of them!”

“Congratulations to Joe and Leroy on their well-deserved expanded roles on the Sports Hub and a big welcome Cerrone to the team,” Beasley Media Group Boston Vice President and Market Manager Mary Menna added.

Drew Hayes Departs KABC in Los Angeles

KABC Vice President, Market Manager, and Program Director Drew Hayes had departed the Cumulus-owned station.

Hayes had served for the past 10 years as the program director of the station, marking his second stint with the Los Angeles news/talk outlet.

He rejoined KABC after programming WLS in Chicago. His original stint leading the brand was from 1998-2000.

A veteran programmer, Hayes has worked at WBBM, 670 The Score, WMAQ-AM, 105.9 Free FM, all in Chicago.

Additionally, he spent time at ESPN Radio, WKRC, and K104 in Dallas, among others, according to All Access.

In the 2022 BNM Top 20, Hayes was ranked as the 16th-best Major Market Program Director in America by a panel of industry programmers and executives.

Ndamukong Suh Reportedly Met With NBC About Future Role

NFL broadcasters are hoping Ndamukong Suh is done with his playing career. Richard Deitsch spoke with representatives of three networks that all have plans for the defensive tackle when he is done.

Sue has reportedly already met with NBC about future opportunities. Having played his college football at Nebraska, he could be in play for either Football Night in America or for the network’s new Big Ten studio show with Maria Taylor, Matt Cassel and Joshua Perry.

ESPN is also impressed with what they have seen. One executive told Deitsch that Suh was “super impressive” in a guest stint on NFL Live last summer.

“He would be great — especially as a studio analyst,” said NFL Network’s Steve Wyche, who worked with Ndamukong Suh as an instructor at the NFL’s Broadcast and Media Boot Camp. “Suh is a high-IQ thinker whose perceptions of people, situations and the game aren’t common. This is what could set him apart. Once he masters the mechanics of doing TV, he would emerge as a star. He’s not into hyperbole or winging it. He would put in the work and distinguish himself.”

While it is clear Suh is preparing for life away from the field, a return cannot be ruled out. He skipped training camp last year and did not debut for the Eagles until Week 11. He could have a similar plan in mind for 2023.

Mike Greenberg: I Get Nuggets Fans’ Complaints About National Coverage

Fans of the Denver Nuggets have not been happy with the way the team has been covered in the playoffs. Whether they are an average joe that loves the team or someone with a sports radio show in the market, none of them have been shy about expressing their feelings and Mike Greenberg doesn’t blame them.

Greeny called into 104.3 The Fan in Denver Monday morning. Mike Evans asked him what his message would be to the Nuggets fans that feel that way.

“My message would be, I get it,” he answered. “You know, the Nuggets are not a team that has the storied history that some of the other franchises in the NBA do. The NBA is very star focused and it’s very history focused.”

Greenberg anchors studio coverage for ESPN and ABC during the playoffs. He has done the same for ESPN’s NBA Countdown all season. He says that while many fans do not know much about the Nuggets, he has had the pleasure to see them on the late half of the network’s NBA doubleheaders.

The majority of the NBA fan base resides in the Central and Eastern time zones. That means most fans are not up late enough for those games. As a result, they did not know much about the team or star center Nikola Jokić prior to the playoffs.

Did that slant the way the team was covered? Greenberg admits that it is possible, but he notes that it seems to have worked out well for them.

“I think it has certainly seemed to galvanize them a little bit,” he said. “I saw when Michael Malone was frustrated that everyone was talking about the Lakers during their series. And look, as a representative of the national media, all I could say is the reality is LeBron James is the biggest star in the sport and the Lakers are the biggest brand in the sport. They’re always going to get all of the attention no matter what else happens.”

Mike Gallagher Broadcasting Tuesday Show From Miami Before Trump Arraignment

Former President Donald Trump will be arraigned on federal charges in a Miami courtroom Tuesday, and Salem Media Group host Mike Gallagher will broadcast his program from the scene.

Gallagher will host The Mike Gallagher Show from 9:00 AM-Noon ET Tuesday live from Salem Media’s Miami studios. He will then head to the Federal Courthouse where Trump will make his appearance before a federal judge.

Trump has been charged with 37 counts regarding his handling of classified information after leaving office in 2021. He is the first former President to face federal charges.

“This will be my second live broadcast of a Donald Trump indictment this year,” said Gallagher. “Our great country is in uncharted political waters, and we want to give our listeners and viewers an up-close, personal report on events that may very well determine who becomes the 47th President of the United States.”

In addition to being heard on Salem Media Group radio stations around the country, video of the special broadcast will also stream on Salem News Channel.

Keith Olbermann: Brian Kilmeade Wasn’t Kidding During Latest Misstep

FOX & Friends host Brian Kilmeade claims he made a joke about former soccer star David Beckham that was misunderstood, and podcaster Keith Olbermann isn’t buying it for a second.

On Friday’s show, Kilmeade said that the only downside recent decision by Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi to move to the U.S. to play was that he didn’t speak English.

Kilmeade then said — with a smile — that former soccer star David Beckham, who is British, learned to speak the language when he moved to the U.S. at 32. Beckham, obviously, spoke English before moving to the United States.

Olbermann addressed the situation on his Countdown podcast Monday, calling Kilmeade “I guess the comic relief of Fox’s morning show?” before mocking his statements about Beckham.

“I think Kilmeade has said some amazingly stupid things over the years. He once tried to criticize interracial marriage by saying ‘We keep marrying other species’. But, honestly, this may be the worst…No, seriously, Kilmeade said ‘One thing about David Beckham: He learned to speak English for us, only with an accent, when he came at 32 years old’.

“This was not a joke. This was not a gag. This was not hyperbole. Brian Kilmeade thinks Beckham — born in London in 1975 — had to learn English when he came to America. Now, this is already Hall of Fame-level stupid before you realize that before he went to Fox quote News unquote, Brian Kilmeade was a sportscaster. And not just a sportscaster, his job the year before he went to Fox, Brian Kilmeade was a soccer reporter for coverage of games of Major League Soccer.”

Kilmeade has defended himself from criticism by saying that “people have no idea when I’m kidding”.

An innocuous comment from Brian Kilmeade during FOX & Friends last week saw him mocked on the internet, and now he’s firing back.

The Big Lead published a story blasting Kilmeade for the quip, arguing that “He married a Spice Girl! He didn’t need to ‘learn’ English when he arrived because it was what he had spoken since birth.”

After publication, Kilmeade took to Twitter to defend himself, calling the situation “hilarious”.

“Once again people have no idea when I am kidding around,” he said.

Responses to Kilmeade’s tweet have varied, with many believing The Brian Kilmeade Show host didn’t realize the statement he made. However, the 59-year-old actually worked as a sideline reporter for MSG’s MLS coverage earlier in his career.

Mike Mulligan: Jason Benetti Jinxed White Sox

Chicago White Sox fans have had to endure several consecutive underperforming seasons. The team recently lost its weekend series to the Miami Marlins after coughing up leads in the later innings of back to back games.

On Sunday, the White Sox led the Marlins 5-1 entering the eighth inning, and fans were justifiably apprehensive about whether or not the team would be able to close out the game. The team called upon reliever Keynan Middleton to maintain the lead, but Marlins slugger Jorge Soler hit his second solo home run of the afternoon to cut the White Sox lead to three.

“Now Soler in a four-run game can really not hurt you a whole bunch,” White Sox TV voice Jason Benetti said on the broadcast. “In the air to left, Benintendi back and those runs look even bigger. Soler, deep for the second time today, it’s 5-2.”

Later that inning, Garrett Cooper hit a solo shot of his own to pull the Marlins within two runs, and in the ninth inning, a homer from Jean Segura and two-run double by Bryan De La Cruz gave Miami the lead.

Benetti started the problems according to Mike Mulligan.

“Even if that thought went through your head, why would you say that out loud?,” the 670 The Score morning host said during the show’s transition segment. “Why would you curse the White Sox with the ‘Malecki’ at that moment?”

The White Sox were beginning to pick up traction after a slow start to the season, taking two out of three games on the road against the New York Yankees. The team is 22-17 after going 7-21 in April, and has won seven of its last 12 series, leading sports fans to wonder whether Benetti’s ‘broadcaster jinx’ is the start of another tumultuous stretch. Mulligan spoke with White Sox color commentator Steve Stone after the game and expressed his sentiment towards Benetti.

“I said, ‘Well that began it for me. That ruined the day right there,’” Mulligan said. “I knew the minute he said that; the minute he gave that words – that he had ruined the game.”

Afternoon co-host Dan Bernstein was playing golf and was told by a friend that the White Sox were winning their afternoon contest 5-1. Shortly thereafter, that same person disclosed that the team had lost the game, leaving Bernstein incredulous as to what could have happened for the outcome to turn the other way.

“We got back to the clubhouse just in time for the postgame to start, and there’s Ozzie [Guillen] talking,” Bernstein exasperatedly recalled. “I’m like, ‘Come on,’ and then they show all the highlights.”

Bernstein’s co-host, Laurence Holmes, had to leave The Score studios quickly after his show Friday and offered to record the promo for Monday’s show from home. After seeing the Cubs take two out of three games on the West Coast against the San Francisco Giants and the White Sox winning the rubber match of their series 5-1, he figured it would culminate into a good weekend for Chicago baseball. From previous disappointment and experience with the White Sox, however, he wanted to record an alternate version just in case and informed producer Adam Studzinski.

“I said, ‘I think I’m going to have to give you a different option for the promo,’” Holmes said. “[Studs is] like, ‘Oh, okay.’ So I gave him the option of it not being a great weekend for the White Sox because they end up losing two games. As soon as I sent it to Studs, everything went to ‘bleep.’ You could feel that things weren’t quite right.”

Jon Sciambi: ESPN Prepared Me for Cubs Job

Jon Sciambi has been the voice of the Chicago Cubs since the Marquee Sports Network was formed in 2021. The current voice of Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN Radio has many analysts working with him on Cubs games, including Jim DeShaies, Joe Girardi, Doug Glanville, or Ryan Dempster to name a few. 

Sciambi was a guest on the Tell Me A Story I Don’t Know podcast with George Ofman and he said that working at ESPN prepared him for the aspect of the Cubs. 

“At ESPN, when you are doing national games on the radio, I had one year with Dave Campbell, then I was with Chris Singleton forever, now I’m with Doug Glanville. There are other fill-ins here and there. On TV over the years between MLB and college baseball, I worked with Rick Sutcliffe, David Ross, Aaron Boone, Singleton, Glanville, Alex Cora, Kyle Peterson, Raul Ibanez, a non-stop list. I would say I had good training in it. It’s a little challenging when you are bouncing from one to the other.”

Due to Sciambi forming relationships in the past with some of his current analysts, it makes it easier to have the analyst chair shuffle around sometimes. 

“The one thing that I would tell you I am fortunate about in terms of all those dudes is I worked 7 years at ESPN with Sutcliffe. I’ve known Ryan Dempster since 1998. We’ve been friends and stay connected. Doug Glanville is a guy I have been friends with since he’s played. I’ve always had a good connection with Girardi and JD (Deshaies) is one of my favorite people on the planet. I’m not saying there is no factor because that would be untrue, but I am fortunate that I have a specific connection for the most part with each of those guys that I think facilitates it at least a bit.”

The Cubs’ TV job became available when Len Kasper became the radio voice for the Chicago White Sox. It was an opening Sciambi had known about, but it wasn’t on his immediate radar b. 

“I was probably more concentrated on how Len was. Is Len happy? That was really more my focus. I had a full-time job at ESPN so that was really more what I was concentrating on.”

Part of the benefits of being the voice of the Cubs is getting the chance to have the home stadium be an iconic ballpark like Wrigley Field. Sciambi said that he had called many games at Wrigley Field before this role, but the ballpark has a charm to it. 

“I love that I can sit in that seat. I had done over 100 games at Wrigley Field before I even got the job and now 2+ years into it, there’s still plenty of nights when I sit there whether it’s full or empty and it feels completely brand new because it’s so beautiful and so special.”
