News Radio Should Celebrate Audio-First Decision From Ron DeSantis

1

Ron DeSantis launched his 2024 Presidential run on Twitter Spaces on Wednesday night to much fanfare. By now, you’ve seen the hot takes on how the enthusiasm for DeSantis crashed Twitter or, depending on your preferred candidate, the rollout was a disaster and is a sign of things to come for his campaign. I’ll let the opposing campaigns and fanboys/girls, and news radio hosts hash that part out between themselves.

What’s far more interesting from a media perspective is DeSantis’ platform choice. It was not legacy media. He did not choose Fox News, Newsmax, etc., but more interesting was the fact he chose an audio-first medium on Twitter. There was no visual element at all.

Ron DeSantis did the equivalent of a radio interview to announce his 2024 bid. Yes, he hopped on Fox News later that evening with Trey Gowdy, but the official announcement and first media interview came on Twitter, without any video component.

As radio programmers, hosts, and salespeople, we should be doing cartwheels and leveraging this moment.

For too long, TV has been overrated. It’s been a perfect storm. You have politicians who love seeing themselves on TV to feed their egos, and many of their advisors and media buyers have backgrounds in the medium, so it becomes an echo chamber.

From the ridiculous overspending during election season on overproduced, phony, repetitive television spots that produce diminishing returns (rather than the far more cost-effective and impactful radio ads), to the obsession with capturing every TV opportunity they can, TV has become overvalued in recent elections.

Ron DeSantis’ decision on Wednesday night may have been the move that makes many realize where they have missed the boat in recent years.

If used in a calculating manner, DeSantis’ moment can benefit radio programming and sales.

Programmers should be pitching any of their local candidates in legitimate races that matter to try and get their candidacy announcement on radio. “If Ron DeSantis can go audio-first, why isn’t it good enough for you?” This would bring earned media for the candidate and radio station and the TV hits would follow.

On KCMO, we landed the announcement interview with former KC TV anchor Mark Alford, who used that springboard to win an open U.S. Congressional seat in 2022.

From a sales perspective, this could also be a game changer in helping PACs, agencies, and campaigns understand the personal nature of the audio-first medium, which radio still dominates, despite what the naysayers claim.

During the 2022 cycle, radio did exceed its estimates in political advertising with $310 million, compared to the projections of $270 million. But that’s peanuts compared to the $4.73 billion spent on broadcast TV, according to this article from Radio Insight.

That is absurd. And it is the very definition of diminishing returns. Whether it’s a Presidential candidate in a key state or city, or more appropriately for this column, a local U.S. Senate, or congressional, candidate in your market, there are two paths.

One, they can become another overplayed, tune-out TV ad, where their ego is stroked and they get noticed in the grocery store, but they don’t get the value from the spending they need.

Or, two, they can own radio, which will be more cost-effective, impactful, personal for the listener, oh, and reach a potential voter that is 10-15 years younger, on average, than those still watching broadcast TV.

None of this is to suggest that TV is not important, of course, it will forever be critical to have a visual component for politicians in the 21st century. But it’s not everything. It never has been and it never will be, despite what the differential in ad spending suggests.

If audio-first is a good enough launch for one of the front runners to land in the White House in 2024, I’d say it’s more than good enough for anyone else entering the political arena at any level.

Jimmy Pitaro: ESPN Priority is Expanding Our Audience & Pat McAfee Does That

0

The announcement of Pat McAfee joining forces with ESPN raised a lot of questions as to whether McAfee’s daily brand of sports talk can sustain itself for the long-term on cable.

But ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro has no doubts that Pat can be wildly successful for years to come. He spoke with The Big Lead recently and said bringing McAfee’s show to the daily lineup allows the network to tap into a different audience.

“When we talk about our priorities at ESPN, one of the things we always mention is audience expansion,” Pitaro said. “That means a lot of things, but it especially means attracting a younger audience. We feel like Pat really helps us in that regard.”

“I have a son and a daughter, both of whom not just know who Pat is but they like him, and I have a father who also happens to really like Pat,” he added. “That’ll tell you a lot about his appeal.”

Also expanding the relationship between The Worldwide Leader and McAfee made sense in Pitaro’s eyes. The two sides already have a history.

“We’ve been in business with Pat for some time by now,” he said. “He’s done a fantastic job for us on College GameDay, he’s done some alternate broadcasts that have really resonated with our audience, so we feel like his show is a natural extension of what we’re already doing.”

Pat McAfee: Bobby Carpenter ‘is 1 of 1’

While scrolling through his Twitter feed on Thursday, Pat McAfee caught a glimpse of a commercial featuring Columbus radio host Bobby Carpenter. The commercial was something McAfee and his crew could not wait to share with the audience.

McAfee mentioned almost in passing to co-host AJ Hawk that he had seen that the 97.1 The Fan host had signed an endorsement deal with Garage Beer.

Hawk said the commercial was pretty sweet, and so naturally the spot was played on the show.

“I’m so happy that I just glimpsed at that at some point during my scrolls earlier,” McAfee said laughing. “Imagine if we didn’t have that in our life.”

Pat McAfee enjoyed just how natural Carpenter was and showcased the beer in a way that only he could.

“That guy, he’s 1 of 1, huh?” he said.

Some of Carpenter’s lines had Pat wondering if the commercial was actually scripted or whether the company thought it would’ve just been more fun to let Bobby be himself.

“He’s either really acting, or he’s practicing his lines and they just took the practice,” McAfee said.

Colin Cowherd: Listeners See Jason McIntyre As My Little Brother

It’s still early in Jason McIntyre’s run on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Cowherd explained how he and the audience see the partnership thus far.

“When I do this show, one of the things that cracks me up, because J-Mac has only been on the show through the football season – about six months or so,” Cowherd said Thursday. “Everybody goes, ‘Oh he’s like your little brother who holds you accountable.’ And I kind of like that.”

Colin went on to add that he tries to make sure he doesn’t date himself too badly when throwing various references out there.

“I have to be careful because I am older than J-Mac, he is not aware of a lot of what happened in the 70s unless it was Northeast,” he said.

Denver Nuggets legend Alex English was the next guest on the show, and Cowherd asked if McIntyre had ever seen any of English’s highlights. English played in Denver from 1980-90.

“I’m older than you think and yes, I can name just about any NBA player from 1985, 1986,” McIntyre responded.

DirecTV Renews Deal to Provide Sunday Ticket to Bars & Restaurants

While NFL Sunday Ticket will be moving to YouTubeTV for football fans at home this fall, DirecTV will continue to distribute the service for bars and restaurants. An announcement of a multi-year agreement between the league and DirecTV was made on Thursday. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

“DirecTV for Business delivers a market-leading, consistent and reliable sports viewing experience to fans in more than 300,000 bars, restaurants and other commercial establishments across the United States,” said Mike Wittrock, DirecTV’s chief sales and service officer. “We’re thrilled to partner with EverPass and continue carriage of NFL Sunday Ticket.”

EverPass Media was established earlier this year by the NFL. Working with RedBird Capital, the goal was to manage the distribution of Sunday Ticket to commercial consumers.

Last season, the league worked out a deal with DirecTV to carry Thursday Night Football games to those same customers. Thursday games are broadcast to residential customers on Amazon Prime Video.

Dana Loesch: ‘So Many Drama Queens’ Over Twitter Spaces Malfunction

0

Elon Musk, Twitter, and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) have all individually taken heat for the performance of the Twitter Spaces function during yesterday’s presidential campaign announcement. Radio host Dana Loesch believes the reaction has been overblown.

To begin her nationally-syndicated show Thursday, Loesch played a clip of her question to DeSantis — and subsequent praising of Musk — during the announcement. She noted that while she had been removed from the room several times, the only people who truly believe there was anything wrong with the rollout were people in the industry.

“I know that there was a lot of freaking out over it and people were upset saying this was a disaster. I think you have to live and breathe this stuff to think it was disastrous,” Loesch said.

“I think there are so many drama queens out there. This is one of the problems with having politics as entertainment because politics can get really stupid really fast, and stay stupid for a really long time. The glitches — cause I got kicked off like a million times — I think they had done some updates since the last time Elon Musk had done a Twitter Spaces with the BBC, and something was up with his account that was tripping something, and so they had to move it.

“I don’t think it was hubris to not test it. I don’t know where people are getting that they didn’t test it. Nobody in the press writing about it in the press has asked that question, either. They’re just running off an assumption that nothing was ever tested. I don’t care about that, either. I think it was a fun or new way to do something.”

Kaitlan Collins Bids Farewell to CNN This Morning as Primetime Show Looms

0

CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins signed off from the show for the final time Thursday as she begins preparations to move to the network’s primetime lineup.

Collins will begin hosting the 9:00 PM ET program for CNN as it looks to regain its footing from a yearslong slide in the ratings. Recently, the network has seen some programs, including Anderson Cooper’s 8:00 PM ET show, defeated in the ratings by upstart Newsmax.

As she shared her final moments on the program with co-anchor Poppy Harlow, Collins shared her appreciation for the relationship she had built with her co-host.

“The gift of this show, for me, has been you. Thanks for the laughs, the fun, the many Starbucks orders, mostly the friendship,” Harlow said to Collins.

CNN This Morning debuted last fall as a three-person program with Collins, Harlow, and the now departed Don Lemon. Lemon and Collins reportedly clashed behind the scenes during a November episode that saw Collins leave the program early. The morning show has failed to gain much traction with viewers thus far, sitting at or below the network’s previous iteration — New Day — in average audience.

Collins is slated to begin her new primetime program in June. It is yet to be titled and a firm debut date has not been announced.

In the meantime, CNN will pair Harlow with a rotating panel of guest co-hosts before settling on a replacement for Collins.

Ron DeSantis Defends Decision to Announce Campaign On Twitter Spaces In Erick Erickson Interview

0

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has defended the decision to announce his 2024 Republican presidential campaign on a non-traditional platform like Twitter Spaces after things got off to a rocky start yesterday.

In an interview with radio host Erick Erickson, DeSantis claimed he wanted to do something different than the traditional in-person announcement in his home state, and take the message to where those most interested in his statements were.

“I think at the end of the day, there will be time to do a lot of those speeches and we’ve done a lot of speeches in front of a lot of people and we’ll have time to do more,” DeSantis admitted. “We thought doing something with Elon — given his notoriety and cachet — and then given the fact that Twitter is now viewed as the place where you can speak your mind as opposed to a lot of these other places that it was an interesting opportunity.

“I had never done one of these Twitter Spaces before. I don’t even have Twitter myself, but the accounts we do are manage by our folks, so I wasn’t even sure how it worked. Twitter said they were locked and ready to go, but they just had so many people that swarmed it that it basically melted the system,” continued DeSantis. “They were able to get that worked out. It was an interesting format. I think that these things live on, so that recording is, I guess, available.”

DeSantis then said the schedule would obviously allow for more traditional campaign rally stops throughout the primary season, but the said the chance to do something on a platform like Twitter was too good to pass up.

“We will be doing a bunch of rallies. We’ll be doing all of that. I think it was a unique opportunity, and I was glad we did it. I definitely think we got more buzz and I think we got more interest as a result. Obviously, I know, as someone who’s an elected official, that most Republican primary voters — even a small percentage — probably aren’t on Twitter, there’s a very small portion that actually are on Twitter.

“We understood that but felt like there would be a lot of buzz about it, and I think there has been. I think it was probably the biggest story in the world yesterday. So, hopefully, we’ll get some people interested in our campaign who may not have been otherwise.

The Junkies Hosting First Ever Pickleball Competition

0

Pickleball is having a moment in the US. It is a moment that The Junkies want to be a part of in the nation’s capitol.

The 106.7 The Fan morning show announced on Thursday that they are ready to host their first ever pickleball event in the coming weeks. The 2023 Junkies Pickleball Challenge will happen in Falls Church, VA on June 10.

The official slogan of the competition is “dink it against the donks and win some prizes.”

JP Flaim admitted that when Cakes Auville first got into pickleball, the entire show made fun of him. Then Eric Bickel started playing. Now, it is impossible to escape pickleball with public tennis and basketball courts around the DC area being converted.

“Pickelball is mushrooming in popularity,” Cakes responded.

Challengers can enter the competition for $75. There will be pool play prior to a playoff to determine an overall champion. The Junkies will also host a show live from the event that morning.

Keith Olbermann: After Twitter Spaces Fiasco, Tucker Carlson Better Off Launching Show Via Fax

0

Things did not go well for Ron DeSantis Wednesday. The Florida governor experienced technical difficulties on Twitter Spaces as he tried to announce he was seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Podcaster Keith Olbermann reveled in the issues.

On Countdown With Keith Olbermann Thursday, the former cable news host shared his excitement that the issues happened on Elon Musk’s platform.

“The Twitter Space blowed up. Blowed up good. Blowed up real good; blowed up like an Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket,” Olbermann said in a stereotypical country voice. “I’ll spare you the other jokes except the one that Musk then tweeted that all presidential candidates were welcome on Twitter. And you have to wonder if two of them called Elon at the same time to say I’d like to come on. Elon’s phone system would melt.”

Olbermann then referenced a report from Axios that claimed that Twitter is on the verge of threatening Rupert Murdoch and FOX Corp. as the dominant media space for conservatives. He claimed that the snafus from Twitter Spaces proved the platform isn’t ready to take on that responsibility.

“Tucker Carlson told the site hours before the disaster ‘Thankfully, the old system is collapsing in real-time’. No. Sorry, Tucky. Good choice of words, though. It seems to be Elon’s the new system that’s collapsing in real time. And, oh look, you’re willing to forego $30 million from Fox to launch your new show on Twitter. Tucker, I hate your guts and you hate mine, but I’m gonna give you free advice: You’re better off launching your new show by fax.”
