Is David Lin Financial Media’s Next Star?

0

David Lin is not your everyday, cookie-cutter, teleprompter-reading financial news talking head. And that is exactly why his audience holds him in such high regard in this new age of independent, online media.

This weekend, James from the popular YouTube program, InvestAnswers, welcomed Lin, one of the rising stars of the financial media, to talk about a wide array of topics. The two thought leaders discussed Lin’s career journey, his opinion of the financial news media overall, and his outlook for many assets, such as Bitcoin.

“I fell into this kinda by accident,” Lin explained, as he discussed his schooling at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and his first job at BCA Research, a macroeconomics research firm. “I worked with some of the brightest minds in the macro industry. Very fortunate to have started there. That kind of built my base for understanding macroeconomics and the markets.”

After nearly five years with BCA, Lin was contacted by Kitco News, a prominent online financial news outlet, about a job opportunity as a producer for the network.

“My job as a producer wasn’t to broadcast. It was to source questions, find guests, book guests, do the post-production, do the pre-production, and all that. So behind-the-scenes work,” Lin explained, saying he grew in that role for more than two years until the network’s anchor left for another opportunity.

“There was this void of someone needing to be in front of the camera and they just asked me, hey do you want to do some interviews? And I said, sure, and it was a lot of fun. My first interviews were not great. Don’t look up my first interviews online. It was a good learning experience; I had a lot of fun. I guess they liked me because they kept me in that full-time position for three years.”

At the beginning of 2023, Lin decided to go off on his own, leaving the network to create his own online YouTube channel, The David Lin Report. He envisions a future where he runs the business side of his financial media business, which eventually may include various programming options and multiple hosts. As a product of a long family line of entrepreneurs, the gamble seems like a natural progression for Lin. But for now, his on-camera role is where he focuses most of his energy.

“For now this is what I like doing, this is what I love doing. This is my passion, this is what I’m good at. I have an audience so I’m just going to build on that. I kind of fell into this profession by accident, to be frank. If I had my way of my life perfectly planned out in college, I’d be on Wall Street somewhere doing banking. But that didn’t work out, so here I am,” Lin said.

“It’s funny how careers develop. I always consider the lifespan of a working career as a bunch of stepping stones,” James said. “Sometimes you go to the one on the left or the one on the right. And that can change the whole trajectory of your life. That’s one of the reasons, for example,  I’m in the U.S. Because somebody threw me on a stepping stone and the rest is history.”

When watching Lin – and James from InvestAnswers as well for that matter – viewers can tell he is not an empty suit. His questioning reveals not only a deep knowledge of the financial subject matter but also a laser-like focus when questioning his guests.

Unlike many current media interviewers, Lin has the ability to keep the focus on his guest, rather than on himself. Rather than pontificate and self-aggrandize, his goal is to pull the pearls and nuggets from the interviewee.

“I think as media we have to, for me, I focus on providing a platform for the guest to really flesh out their reasoning for their calls,” Lin noted. “You look at CNBC or FOX – and I love those channels – they have these sound bytes, where do you think the S&P’s going to go in five years or five months? Up. Ok, on to the next question. But we don’t understand why they think that. And so that’s why I think as podcasters on YouTube and other platforms we have the luxury of 30, 40-minute, 20-minute interviews so we can give the guest an opportunity to flesh out their rationale, which I think is more important than the ultimate call itself.”

Lin says he feels called to go deeper than just making market predictions. This approach, sadly, is more the exception than the rule in today’s media landscape.

“This is the irresponsibility of media, I would say. And I’m gonna fully admit that I’ve been in this camp myself,” Lin offered, explaining the prescient advice he was once given by a mentor. “I remember he was coaching me and he said, clients pay us a lot of money every year to subscribe to our services and research and consultation because they like our rationale. Not so much our calls, because nobody really cares at the end of the day if you think the S&P is going to 4000, 500, or 2500. They want to know your reasoning for that call.”

James, known for his rigorously-detailed, analytical approach even donned a suit and tie for this episode – perhaps an on-air first for James – as a hat-tip to the always sharply-attired Lin. The two seem to share a common philosophy based on objectivity, fact-based trends, and the dissemination of that information to the widest audience possible. (James’ viewers also know him as a rational, authentic voice, who uses proceeds from his channel to help endangered and injured animals.)

Lin, now in his 30s, shared his thoughts on many topics during the wide-ranging program.

On the future of AI, he said, “I fully expect AI to be just as good as me as an interviewer, if not better in five years. A scary thought when you think about it. That’s not the reason I want to step away from it eventually.”

Regarding the media’s use of fear to drive audience engagement, he said, “This is what I’m talking about, the irresponsibility of media. I’ve noticed that my bearish headlines always have gotten more clicks than the bullish headlines. And so I have an incentive to actually get more clicks and so clickbait the audience with all these doom and gloom headlines. Eventually, I told myself this is not responsible journalism because most of these calls end up being wrong anyway.”

On the future of his burgeoning YouTube channel, Lin said “My mission for this channel is to democratize financial education. That’s what I want to do for now. And eventually, five years down the line, I want to grow the channel and rebrand it in such a way that I can bring on other presenters and anchors as well so it’s not just me. I’m not the only face of the company.

And by then I’ll probably step into more of a managerial side. I’ll still be doing programs and hosting programs every once in a while, but I want to develop other talents as well. I see my channel being, perhaps, even an incubator for other podcasts and people who want to come on, learn and start their own channel. I can see myself being an incubator for that down the line.”

On his personal knowledge of Bitcoin, Lin said, “I remember when Bitcoin was first making the rounds in the headlines. Not in 2009 when it first was born, but a couple years later when it first started gaining mainstream attention. I was working in my first job and I remember thinking to myself, why would I ever buy this?

“And presumably, I look back and I regretted the mindset that I had, which is to say that I didn’t really adopt an open mind about this new technology. And I didn’t understand why people would adopt this. It was digits. It was computer code, and seemingly just arbitrary value assigned to this computer code. And I thought to myself, this just seems like a Ponzi.

And to this day a lot of people still share that sentiment. I’ve since educated myself a little bit more and I don’t think it’s a Ponzi anymore. But I had that mentality in 2012 and I didn’t buy it, and I missed the boat. And I think to anybody – whether you’re pro-Bitcoin or anti-Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies – to anybody watching, try to keep an open mind. Try to learn. Try to learn from the Bitcoin bears. Try to learn from the Bitcoin bulls. This is why media’s important. This is why it’s important for media personalities like you and me to present a balanced viewpoint, so everyone can learn from different viewpoints.”

One can be sure to hear Lin’s balanced viewpoint – in uniquely enhanced ways and larger numbers – for years to come.

Paul Pierce on ESPN Exit: ‘I Got Fired for Having Some Entertainment’

0

It’s been two years since former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce was fired by ESPN, and Pierce still kind of feels like he got canned over really nothing.

In an appearance on the I Am Athlete podcast this week, Pierce talked about the videos he posted on social media that ultimately got him terminated.

“I got fired for what?” Pierce said. “I got fired for having some entertainment. I’m playing cards, it’s my boy’s birthday, it’s girls dancing, and I’m blowing some trees. What did I do wrong?”

The videos got added attention because Pierce said he did something he normally doesn’t do, go live.

“I was just feeling my cut or something,” he said. “Then it was popping behind me.”

Paul also talked about getting a phone call from ESPN higher ups where it was revealed they were launching an investigation into his actions.

“I didn’t do nothing illegal,” he said, further explaining that it was ultimately Disney making the call to terminate under the company’s morality clause in his contract.

“They just said it was immoral,” he said.

This is not the first time Pierce has spoken publicly about his firing. He has repeatedly said that he is not sorry for what happened and mentioned that he felt he was on his way out from ESPN at the time anyway.

National Security Council Asks Reporters Not To Report on Leaked Pentagon Docs

0

During Monday’s White House press briefing, John Kirby, the coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, urged journalists not to report on leaked Pentagon classified documents circulating online.

According to The Daily Wire, the U.S. government is responding to what some believe to be the biggest breach of classified secrets since the Edward Snowden saga. On Sunday, the Pentagon released a statement stating that they are working to assess the validity and national security impact of images appearing on social media.

These images allegedly show secret details about China, Russia’s war in Ukraine, surveillance efforts, etc. U.S. officials have engaged with allies, partners, and Congress about the disclosure.

“Without confirming the validity of the documents, this is information that has no business in the public domain,” Kirby said from the podium after facing repeated questions about the documents.

The source of the apparent leak remains unclear, and the Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the matter following a referral from the DoD. Kirby confirmed there is suspicion that at least some of the images of documents may have been doctored.

“It has no business — if you don’t mind me saying — on the front pages of newspapers or television,” he added. “It is not intended for public consumption, and it should not be out there,” added Kirby.

On Sunday, Israel denied intelligence that claimed the country’s Mossad intelligence agency encouraged protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial judicial reforms plan. President Joe Biden is staying briefed on the situation, and Kirby said, “We don’t know. We truly don’t know,” when asked about the suspected leak’s containment and ongoing threat.

Flex Scheduling Would Give Thursday Night Football 5th Game Pick Each Week

0

It appears that flex scheduling for Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video is going to happen, but it ultimately might not make the game itself any more watchable than what was originally scheduled.

The proposal, which would be voted on at the next NFL owners meeting, would allow Amazon to flex games for Weeks 14-17. This according to Andrew Marchand at the New York Post.

But the catch is that Amazon would actually get last pick of games considering ESPN is also going to be able to flex games in and out of Monday nights.

Both FOX and CBS would be able to protect one game in that window from being flexed. But Amazon wouldn’t get to pick a game to flex until both NBC and ESPN have decided if they want to swap games out.

That means the top four games would be off the board each week by the time Amazon and the NFL decided if it was moving a game from Sunday to Thursday.

Amazon is in year two of its exclusive deal with the NFL as the home for Thursday Night Football. The tech giant’s maiden season in 2022 was met with mixed reviews when it came to its schedule of games, as matchups typically featured some of the worst teams in the league. The idea is to hopefully be able to add a compelling game late in the season as the playoff race heats up.

Mike Greenberg: ‘Political Debates Descend Conversation, Sports Debate Brings Us Together’

0

Mike Greenberg isn’t a fan of debating politics. He’d rather debate sports instead.

On Monday’s edition of Greeny, Greenberg said one of the things he loved about the new book he and producer Paul “Hembo” Hembekides put together was that it encourages debate, which he knows typically is all in good fun and rarely gets personal.

“The best thing about sports conversation is that it ascends into debate. And I use that word advisedly. It doesn’t descend,” Greenberg said of the book “Got Your Number”. “Our political discourse in this country in this day and age stinks. It’s awful. It descends into the lowest common denominator all the time. It descends into nastiness. It descends into people calling each other names and separating themselves and drawing themselves further apart rather than having an actual intellectual conversation.”

Greenberg added that the thing about sports debates is that it ultimately doesn’t seek to divide people in a harsh way. He saw that play out after an appearance on Good Morning America this week.

“Sports debate brings us together because someone might feel we got Clemente right, and someone might have thought we were wrong and it should’ve been Deion,” he said. “And someone else might have thought it was Tim Duncan. But none of us thought that the other person was a bad human being for thinking that.”

David Schultz Returns To Lafayette At 103.3 The Goat

0

A little more than two months removed from his dismissal at Sports Radio 105.5 WNSP in Mobile, David Schultz is returning to the airwaves of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Schultz announced Monday on his Twitter that he’ll be hosting a new afternoon show on Townsquare Media’s 103.3 The Goat starting April 17.

Schultz was the program director and host at rival 103.7 The Game in Lafayette from 2013-2019. He served in a similar capacity at WNSP.

Before all that, David also contributed to WQAM in Miami from 2009-11.

Dan Bickley: Al McCoy Deserves Championship Ending

0

After 51 years behind the microphone for the Phoenix Suns, Al McCoy is retiring at the end of this season. As the Suns enter the playoffs, no one knows when that end may come, but Arizona Sports 98.7 morning hosts Dan Bickley and Vince Marotta have already looked at where McCoy’s tenure could end.

The 89-year-old McCoy was honored and recognized for his contributions to the team at the franchise’s final home game of the season over the weekend, and the two radio hosts marveled at the job he did.

“Al gave a great speech. He’s very at home in that element. It was very warm, and I loved his message. Loved that message,” said Dan Bickley.

“Al stole the stage at halftime with that speech, which he can do,” Vince Marotta said.

The Arizona Sports 98.7 hosts then noted that the current Suns team has as good a chance as any in franchise history to win a title. The team is the #4 seed in the upcoming NBA Western Conference Playoffs, and bolster a star-studded lineup that features the likes of Kevin Durant, DeAndre Ayton, Devin Booker, and Chris Paul.

They noted that the club winning its first NBA championship would be poetic.

“The way this is lining up for the Suns, maybe in position to win a championship,” Bickley noted. “You wanna talk about worth the wait? 55 years for the franchise and 51 years for him?”

“It does seem perfect, doesn’t it? Don’t screw it up, Suns! It’s all lined up!” Bickley jokingly shouted.

Dorin Dickerson: Andrew Fillipponi Was Surprised He Got Booed at Pirates Game

0

93.7 The Fan hosts Dorin Dickerson and Andrew Fillipponi threw out the first pitch at the Pittsburgh Pirates game over the weekend. Dickerson — a former Pitt Panther football star and NFL veteran — received a welcomed response after his introduction. However, the reaction to Fillipponi was more mixed.

“He definitely got booed,” Dickerson said during The Fan Morning Show Monday. “I kind of figured he was gonna get booed, and I was hoping they wouldn’t announce us together because I didn’t want to be part of the ‘boo’ process. So they announced us separately, which I was happy with.”

After a discussion with Chris Mack and Colin Dunlap about how Dickerson’s first pitch went, the pair asked about Fillpponi’s mindset leading into the first pitch.

“He was very nervous. He was talkative. He was just like ‘I hope I get it over the plate. I’ve been practicing. I need a couple throws. I need to do this…’. He was nervous. It took him by surprise. The cheers — in his mind — took him by surprise. He did fine. If he would have skipped it, that place would have erupted.”

Dickerson joked that “he caught touchdown passes in front of 60,000 people for a decade”, so he wasn’t subject to the same nerves as Fillipponi.

Charles Barkley: ‘You Can Tell Who Reporters Like and Dislike’

0

Charles Barkley is never shy with an opinion. He told Dan Patrick that is what has made him a star. What has made him respected, is that his opinions have never been clouded by his relationships.

Patrick asked Barkley about the fallout from a recent interview on 60 Minutes in which his relationship with Michael Jordan was brought up. Patrick reminded Barkley that it was on his show that the Inside the NBA star made the comment that Jordan surrounded himself with “yes men” as owner of the Charlotte Hornets. That comment is supposedly what fractured the relationship between the two Hall of Famers.

Barkley said that he still loves Jordan. He called the GOAT’s reaction to his comments “unfortunate,” but said that he still always hopes Jordan is doing well.

“One of the reasons I hate reporters, to be honest with you — guys like Skip Bayless and people like that — you can tell the guys they like and dislike,” Barkley said. “That ain’t right. You should be fair. Just cause me and Michael, we’re great friends, I don’t give him a hall pass.”

Any number of NBA players can say that Charles Barkley has gotten under their skin on TNT. What Barkley says you cannot say is that he targeted anyone unfairly.

“The one thing I’ve been straightforward and honest on anybody I’ve given my opinion with in my 23 years. I never played favorites. There’s nobody that can say ‘Charles don’t like this guy’. I’ve been fair to everybody.”
