WrestleMania 39 Sets Viewership, Revenue Records for WWE

0

WWE has announced that WrestleMania 39 will go down as the most successful event in company history.

The wrestling promotion says the two-night, sold-out event in Los Angeles set a global viewership record. The audience for Sunday night’s event eclipsed the previous record by 33%. Saturday’s coverage saw a 28% growth of the already standing record.

With an attendance of 161,892, WWE brought in a gate of $21.6 million, breaking the previous high by more than 27%.

Additionally, the company secured more than $20 million in sponsorship revenue for the two-day event, which more than doubled the past best performances.

On social media, more than 500 million views and 11 million hours of video were consumed during the event, which is a 42% increase compared to 2022.

Ben Shapiro: ‘Kind of Absurd’ How Networks Covered Donald Trump’s Plane on Runway

0

Yesterday, former President Donald Trump flew from Florida to New York in preparation for his arraignment on 34 felonies in the Empire State. News organizations featured extensive coverage of the travel, which The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro balked at.

During The Ben Shapiro Show Tuesday, the host claimed that the media was obviously going to cover the developments, but didn’t know that it would look like this. “The media are going whole hog wall to wall on the coverage,” Shapiro said.

He then noted that Trump has always been the subject of more media attention due to his “incredible story”. Shapiro pointed out that anyone who had appeared on the cover of Playboy before ascending to the office of the presidency was destined to receive differing media coverage.

Shapiro then turned his attention to the coverage yesterday, before noting that it was slightly overblown in his eyes.

“I mean, if this were a novel, you would not actually believe this was happening. Because, again, this would be a bad novel, but it is in fact a reality. So there’s a reason why the media are covering this stuff. You can’t exactly blame them,” Shapiro admitted. “Although, I will say that watching all four networks simultaneously covering Donald Trump’s plane on the on the runway, it was kind of absurd.”

NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Sees Record-Breaking Audience

0

The stars had aligned for the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship Game.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark has grown wildly in popularity, while LSU’s Angel Reese has proven to be one of the best players in the country. The Tigers are coached by the legendary Kim Mulkey. Many wondered if the title matchup would be the most-watched game in the tournament’s history.

Ultimately, it did reach that record. The contest saw an average of 9.9 million viewers, peaking at 12.6 million. That figure represents a 103% increase over last year’s South Carolina/UConn final.

Additionally, ESPN claims the broadcast is the most-watched college sporting event in the history of the ESPN+ streaming service.

The record-breaking viewership total continues the trend ESPN has experienced with the 2023 tournament. First-round viewership saw a 27% increase compared to 2022.

The news of the massive audience for the Championship Game comes on the heels of new NCAA President Charlie Baker claiming the organization is “going to work really hard” on securing a separate television contract for the event. Currently, the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is included in the NCAA’s television deal with ESPN for 29 championship events. That contract pays the NCAA $34 million per season.

According to a study commissioned by the NCAA, the Women’s Basketball Tournament could be worth between $80-$110 million by itself.

RSBN Receives 7-Day YouTube Ban For Airing Election Misinformation

0

Conservative streaming platform Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN) has been handed a 7-day YouTube ban after it aired “election misinformation”.

In a statement posted to the network’s Twitter account, it claims YouTube removed videos that claimed both the 2020 U.S. and 2022 Brazil presidential elections were “stolen”. YouTube charged RSBN with being guilty of offering “content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches occurred in the 2020 U.S. presidential election or the 2022 Brazilian presidential election.”

In response, the company has removed several other videos, including former President Donald Trump’s recent campaign event in Waco, Texas, remarks he made at CPAC, and his interview with the network at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

RSBN claimed YouTube’s week-long ban coincides with Trump’s arraignment in New York, calling the ban “convenient” and “Orwellian censorship practices”.

“Rather than allowing RSBN to show a countervailing view to the mainstream media’s version of the arraignment, they are simply shutting down our efforts. Again, they are leaving millions of Americans voiceless in the face of tyranny,” the RSBN statement read.

YouTube’s policies against misinformation including an increasing length of bans, with a permanent ban possible if an account receives a third “strike” in a 90-day period.

In response, RSBN says it is “fully prepared to move full steam ahead” with coverage of “pro-Trump protests” at the former President’s arraignment.

The RSBN channel features more than 1.5 million subscribers. It’s programming includes shows hosted by Michael Savage, Lara Trump, and was the home of Diamond & Silk before Diamond’s January death. Her sister — Silk — continues to host a show on the outlet.

Fired ABC News Employees Reportedly Investigating Legal Options

0

Last week, 50 ABC News staffers were let go as The Walt Disney Company institutes layoffs. Now, those employees have reportedly sought out legal advice as their next option.

According to The Daily Beast’s Lachlan Cartwright, “notoriously aggressive Hollywood lawyer” Bryan Freedman has been in contact with former ABC News reporter Chris Vlasto, Senior Vice President of Newsgathering Wendy Fisher, Senior Vice President of Talent Galen Gordon, Vice President of Talent Mary Noonan, Executive Editorial Producer Heather Riley, and Vice President of Communications Alison Rudnick.

The group took issue with the notion that moments after the final person had been notified of their job loss, the names of the executives removed and an accompanying memo had been shared with Variety.

Cartwright’s report claims family members of the staffers found out about the reductions due to the report. It also details internal strife surrounding the job that ABC News President Kim Godwin is doing. Consternation includes what some viewed as frivolous spending as The Walt Disney Company continues reductions.

In total, the company plans to remove 7,000 jobs with the hope of saving $5.5 billion after its stock price dropped by 44% in 2022.

WTAM PD Ray Davis Exits

WTAM Program Director Ray Davis has exited the Cleveland news/talk station after 25 years in the role.

Davis spent a total of 36 years at the station and it’s predecessor WWWE.

His departure is linked to several cuts iHeartMedia has made in recent days. The company says it plans “to do everything we can to get through this difficult economic time while protecting our employee base as much as possible.”

Davis becomes the second news/talk casualty in the layoffs. WFLA morning host Jack Harris saw his position eliminated last week after 29 years with the Tampa station.

Other reductions took place at the company’s clusters in Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Oklahoma City, Raleigh, Rochester, and Tampa. Programming, sales, and promotions departments in those cities were all affected by the cuts.

Tim Brando Signs Extension With FOX Sports

0

FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Tim Brando has signed an extension to remain with the network.

The deal will keep Brando calling college football and basketball games for the network through 2026. 2023 will mark his 10th year of work with FOX Sports. He previously spent 18 years at CBS, three at Turner Sports, and nine years at ESPN.

With the extension, Brando will celebrate his 40th year of national television coverage with the network in 2025.

During an appearance on the Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre podcast last summer, Brando shared his admiration for the team put in place at FOX Sports.

“In so many ways, FOX has been so good for me. When I left CBS abruptly back in 2014, I think a lot of people including me thought ‘Oh gosh, I think I’ve earned enough checkmarks that I should land with a good parachute at a good place’.

“I was a free agent for about 8-9 months. When FOX called, I was so excited,” Brando shared. “Their portfolio was growing, but it wasn’t nearly what it is today. They were visionary. I think they were thinking ‘We are going to grow our college football portfolio. We need more people. We need to add some greater depth. Maybe some people that have a little more understanding of the history of the game’. It’s not always popular for a young television executive to hire a 58-year-old guy that has worked at 3 different networks, but FOX did and I really owe them a lot.”

Sunny Hostin: ‘I Wanted Statistics and Pushback’ From Leslie Stahl With Marjorie Taylor Greene

0

During Monday’s episode of “The View,” the co-hosts criticized CBS’ Lesley Stahl for her interview with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, saying Stahl did not push back enough. Co-hosts Sara Haines and Ana Navarro believed the interview was wrong for “60 Minutes” and argued that CBS gave Greene a larger platform than she deserved.

According to Fox News Digital, Sunny Hostin said she expected more pushback from Stahl during the interview, and Alyssa Farah Griffin agreed.

“I don’t have a problem with her having that platform because I thought she looked like an idiot,” Hostin said. “I hate doing this because I think Lesley Stahl is a great journalist. I wanted statistics and pushback. ‘Well, why do you say that? Who have you heard say that? What about this statistic? What about that?'”

According to Alyssa Farah Griffin, the discussion was somewhat of a “chicken or egg” situation.

“I feel like it is a little bit of a chicken or egg discussion,” she said. “MTG is in our public consciousness, she’s been mocked on ‘SNL,’ she’s a staple of it, everyone knows who she is, she’s a household name, but her actual authority and power, voting power, legislative power in Congress are pretty small.”

Whoopi Goldberg ripped up her notes and disclosed that she did not see the interview.

“I want to remind people that that woman says she’s a protector of children, but she wants more guns in schools. She saw the Parkland shooting as a false flag and said, ‘oh no, somebody on my team did it.’ If it is on your stuff, you have seen it and are aware of it,” Goldberg began.

Chris Stigall: CBS Deserves Credit For Not Editing Around Accommodation For John Fetterman

0

Talk radio host Chris Stigall notes the complexity of a recent “CBS Sunday Morning” interview with Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman. During his campaign last year, Fetterman suffered a stroke that he later called a near-fatal incident. Jane Pauley conducted the interview.

“It’s not like Jane Pauley is not Ben Shapiro fast-talking,” said Stigall on Monday. “But still they (CBS) had to bring in the screen to transcribe the questions, and to CBS’ credit, they show the screen. So often in the interview that he has done, they try to hide or conceal. They will even edit the interview, and I am sure there was editing in this piece too.”

A few weeks after winning, Fetterman was featured in an Associated Press article where it was mentioned that he was still dealing with the effects of auditory processing disorder, a common consequence of stroke. This condition can hinder a person’s ability to speak smoothly and comprehend spoken language quickly.

“If you go back after you’ve done an interview where a guy is halting and stumbling and reading, you go back to the edit bay and tighten it up,” said Stigall. “Next thing you know, it looks like Jane Pauley has asked a question, and Fetterman returns with a rapid-fire answer in short order. Even with creative editing, it’s still clear that Fetterman struggles.”

Fetterman’s uneven performance during the only debate of the fall campaign indicated the lingering effects of the stroke. He had difficulty expressing himself coherently, stumbling over words and struggling to complete sentences. Democrats became anxious, fearing his chances of winning the election were slim.

“Again, not piling on; strokes happen; it’s a real thing that he’s dealing with,” added Stigall. “It seems to me that even with a month at Walter Reed, we’re with a good man here.”

Last month, Fetterman was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center due to depression.

In January, “The Chris Stigall Podcast” officially became part of the Salem Podcast Network after joining earlier this year. The podcast will maintain its daily release schedule, with one episode per weekday. Since joining Salem in November 2019, Stigall has hosted “Philadelphia’s Morning Answer” on AM 990, The Answer. In 2021, Stigall returned to KCMO Kansas City, where he now hosts a weekday program from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cable News Goes All In On Coverage Of Donald Trump

0

As former President Donald Trump prepared for his arraignment at a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, cable news networks covered his arrival in New York on Monday. Viewers could tune into significant cable news networks such as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News to watch the live coverage of Donald Trump’s journey from Florida to New York on his jet with the Trump branding. Later, they showed him traveling in his motorcade to Trump Tower.

“I know that media critics are taking issue with the way that a lot of news networks are covering this, but I have to say, as we watch Donald Trump’s limo drive on the FDR, this is unprecedented,” said CNN’s Jake Tapper.

According to Forbes, Fox News Channel’s coverage displayed the banner “TRUMP LEAVING MAR-A-LAGO, HEADING FOR NYC,” while MSNBC stated, “NOW: TRUMP HEADS TO PALM BEACH INTL. AIRPORT FOR FLIGHT.” CNN’s banner initially read “TRUMP IN NY; MOTORCADE EN ROUTE TO TRUMP TOWER,” and later changed to “SOON: TRUMP TO ARRIVE AT TRUMP TOWER AHEAD OF TOMORROW’S ARREST.”

As Trump’s SUV made its way through the streets of West Palm Beach, followed by his takeoff and landing in his private jet, and then another SUV journeying up the FDR Drive, many drew comparisons to the infamous slow-speed chase involving O.J. Simpson’s white Ford Bronco. These similarities were significant enough to cause “O.J. Simpson” to trend on Twitter for the afternoon.

“I’m flipping stations and shaking my head. No wonder we can’t recover from this Trump infection because the media continues to feed Trump’s thirst to be everything everywhere simultaneously! On the plane, off the plane, in the car. You all know the actual @POTUS traveled today?” MSNBC Political Analyst Michael Steele tweeted.

Shortly before 3:30 pm ET, Fox News utilized its FOX NEWS ALERT stinger to inform viewers of the latest update: “the former president’s plane is about to land,” as Martha MacCallum reported over the live footage of Trump’s plane, which had extended its landing gear in anticipation of the arrival. MacCallum commented, “It’s a beautiful day to fly into Manhattan,” while the banner on the screen displayed “NOW: TRUMP APPROACHING NYC AHEAD OF ARRAIGNMENT.”

Mary Trump, the former president’s niece, and a vocal opponent criticized the sensationalized coverage, questioning CNN’s decision to show footage of Trump’s plane taking off. She argued that the media should have learned from their mistakes during the 2016 election when they deemed empty podiums and idle planes newsworthy. However, Mary Trump observed that the media appeared to repeat the same errors.
