FTC Wants Elon Musk To Testify On Twitter Privacy & Data Practices

0

The Federal Trade Commission’s investigation into Twitter’s data and privacy practices is becoming more rigorous, with the agency now seeking testimony from Elon Musk, the company’s CEO. According to the New York Times, the investigation centers on whether or not Twitter has the ability to protect user privacy following Musk’s mass layoffs and budget cuts since he acquired the company in 2021.

The agency has requested a meeting with Musk and former Twitter employees who worked on privacy and security at the company. Twitter is subject to the regulatory oversight of the FTC, which has investigated allegations of security breaches made by a former executive, as well as the sudden departures of three high-ranking executives in charge of privacy, security, and compliance. Additionally, the European Union has pushed Twitter to disclose more information about its efforts to combat disinformation. The Securities and Exchange Commission has investigated whether Musk’s purchases of Twitter stock were appropriately informed.

Twitter reached a consent decree with the FTC in 2011, and it was later expanded in 2022. The law requires Twitter to conduct regular security audits and update the FTC on handling sensitive data. Additionally, Twitter must provide details about its management structure and clarify Elon Musk’s role in the company. The FTC has raised concerns about whether Twitter has adequate staff and financial resources to meet its privacy obligations, particularly as Musk has been reducing costs and laying off employees.

Twitter had been using Collibra software to track its compliance progress, but payments to the company were halted as part of Musk’s cost-cutting efforts. As a result, the compliance process has become more complex, prompting the FTC to question whether Twitter has the necessary resources to meet its obligations. The agency also seeks to determine Musk’s level of involvement in privacy-related decisions and which other executives have a role in those matters.

A Republican-led House Judiciary Committee subcommittee has criticized the FTC for an “aggressive campaign to harass Twitter.” The subcommittee also criticized the FTC for asking Twitter about access to internal company files it provided to journalists. However, the FTC defended its investigation, stating that protecting consumers’ privacy is what the agency is supposed to do.

If Twitter misleads investigators regarding its privacy practices, the FTC can impose fines on the company and even impose criminal penalties on its executives. Twitter has recently requested additional time from the agency to respond to inquiries about staffing and resources, citing ongoing changes to its corporate structure and leadership. Musk’s large-scale layoffs disrupted the company’s legal department, resulting in junior employees assuming new roles beyond their qualifications.

Entourage Star Jerry Ferrara Asks To Fill In for Craig Carton on WFAN

0

WFAN host Craig Carton will be taking some three-day weekends over the next couple of weeks before the baseball regular season starts, and former Entourage co-star Jerry Ferrara will be filling in for Carton on Friday Carton told co-host Evan Roberts on Wednesday’s Carton & Roberts.

Carton alluded to the fact that he had arranged for a fill-in to help Roberts, and Evan played a quick guessing game to figure out it would be Ferrara, who played the role of Turtle on the show. Roberts originally guessed Ferrara’s Entourage co-star Kevin Connolly.

Craig said Ferrara mentioned he would be in New York this week and his schedule was open to get behind the microphone.

“I was bs-ing with him and he’s like, ‘You know what, I really have nothing to do on Friday. If Evan’s cool with it, yeah I’m in!'” he said.

“If you guys are OK with it, I don’t care it’s your call,” Carton added. “So I asked him if he would fill in for me.”

Carton noted that Ferrara would be a great fit opposite Roberts because of Ferrara’s ties to New York.

“He’s a big fan of the station, big sports fan, New York fan,” he said. “He does a podcast on New York sports. I’m like ‘yeah, I’ll ask Evan.'”

Carton mentioned that Ferrara is a fan of the Knicks, Yankees and Giants, which is opposite of where Evan’s allegiances lie. Roberts said he was excited at the potential discussions to be had.

“Bring him in!” Roberts said. “I think he roots for all the teams I dislike, which I like.”

Danny Parkins: Jim Boeheim Was Part Of My Journalism Training at Syracuse

0

Longtime Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim coached his final game on Wednesday at the ACC Tournament but wouldn’t initially confirm whether or not he was retiring.

Boeheim told reporters after the Orange were eliminated from the tournament that ultimately his future lies with the administrators of the university. It wasn’t until later in the evening that Boeheim’s retirement was confirmed and that Adrian Autry would become the new head coach.

On 670 The Score on Wednesday, Syracuse alum Danny Parkins reflected on his own interactions with Boeheim through the years as a student journalist. He said the good and the bad with Boeheim helped prepare him well.

“Really tough on you but he would treat you like pros,” Parkins said Wednesday on Parkins & Spiegel. “And he would say all the time, he’s like ‘We’re known for our basketball program and our journalism school. And so if these guys want to go be professional journalists I’m gonna treat em that way.'”

“He will let you into the press conferences, he used to let you into the practices,” Parkins added. “He could answer questions.”

It is the opposite of what we heard about Boeheim’s interactions with student journalists earlier this season. On an episode of The Sports Talkers podcast, Paul Finebaum told Stephen Strom that the coach’s behavior was “disgraceful”.

Parkins added that the time was right for Boeheim to call it a career.

“I like the guy, but it was well past time for him to go,” he said.

“I’m surprised with all that interaction with Syracuse media that more of you guys haven’t done anything successful in the business,” co-host Matt Spiegel joked.

Why does Rob Parker make time to help the people at the bottom of the media industry? Because he remembers what it was like to be there and how much had to go right for him to achieve all he has.

Jimmy Pitaro on Shortlist To Succeed Bob Iger As Disney CEO

0

Adam Silver isn’t the only name from the sports world on Disney’s list. Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reports that Jimmy Pitaro could become the new CEO of the company following Bob Iger’s retirement.

Pitaro received the title of Chairman when ESPN was reorganized into its own division of the Walt Disney Company last month. He oversees everything under the company’s umbrella including linear and digital operations as well as live events and other businesses.

Iger returned to the company in November amidst instability under his successor Bob Chapek. It was only ever meant to be a temporary fix. He is 72 years old after all.

McCarthy reports that in addition to Jimmy Pitaro and the aforementioned NBA Commissioner Silver, the shortlist of potential successors includes Disney Co-Chairman Dana Walden and former Disney and TikTok executive Kevin Mayer.

At 53 years old, Pitaro brings an age that would suggest he could lead Disney for years to come. He also has a list of accomplishments that will raise some eyebrows including saving ESPN’s troubled relationship with the NFL, adding the Manning brothers to the talent roster, and spearheading the launch of ESPN+.

It isn’t the first time Pitaro has been mentioned as a potential successor to Bob Iger. McCarthy notes that if he were to ascend to the top of the Walt Disney Company, Burke Magnus is most likely to succeed Jimmy Pitaro at ESPN.

Raj Sharan Has Gone From The Seats To The Stage At The BSM Summit

0

Raj Sharan has become a reliable presence at the BSM Summits. His first trip was to Los Angeles for the 2019 event at the Grammy Museum. Since then, he hasn’t missed a single one.

Later this month, he will be on stage for the second time. Last year, he discussed his station’s success with promotions that generate ratings and revenue. This year, he will be part of a panel that focuses on programming strategy. People that were in attendance last year in Manhattan may hear Raj say some similar things this year when he’s on stage at USC. He says that is because it is hard to talk about programming without hitting a variety of other aspects of the radio business.

“I think it all kind of interlocks and it all becomes part of one bigger strategy of where you’re going with your brand,” he said. “I mean, at the end of the day, while we may tend to focus on a lot of different smaller goals, I think all of us kind of have the same larger consensus goals. How do we get more people consuming our content? There’s a natural overlap in terms of the strategy of any number of those departments, whether you’re talking promotions, programming strategy, digital strategy, or whatever it might be. They’re going to follow a lot of similar pathways.”

People come to the event to hear from leaders of successful brands in the media business, and Denver Sports is certainly among them. The air staff is full of well-known, compelling personalities and the brand has truly embraced a multi-platform strategy that has yielded success. The significance of going from the audience to the stage at the BSM Summit is not lost on Sharan.

“It’s a real honor and privilege,” he said. “Really, I feel like, Demetri, it more so probably speaks to the work that everyone else on our team here in Denver has done. It’s not so much me. I’ve done a really good job hiring people that are way smarter than I am and are more talented than I am and help me look a lot better than I am.”

If you know Raj Sharan at all, you know that he wears fandom on his sleeve. One look inside his office in Bonneville’s Denver building will show you just how much he loves the teams his staff covers. A conversation with him is always full of Star Wars references.

The guy loves what he loves. Like a lot of us in the sports radio, this business is at or near the top of that list for him.

When you feel that way about sports radio, the BSM Summit can become your favorite fan convention. Just like the people that line up for hours at Comic-Con to meet Mark Hamill or Robert Englund, Raj wants to shake the hands of the people that have meant so much to him, and those people are everywhere at the BSM Summit.

“Last year I pulled Bruce Gilbert aside and I was like ‘You know, you’re my Bill Walsh, right?’” he told me. “He kind of gave me a look. I was like, ‘Well, so many of the people I worked with learned a lot of stuff under you. So I kind of feel like this is like a coaching tree. You know, you’re a real hero to me.’”

Star Wars, Denver sports, sports radio, they were all a big part of Raj Sharan’s life going back to before he ever set foot in a studio. They all made their impression, but maybe nothing has made as big of an impact on him as professional wrestling.

That is something he has in common with Jason Barrett. Both men grew up loving wrestling. To both of them, professional wrestling is so much more than just steroid freaks covered in oil and wearing form-fitting underwear. That is why JB invited Eric Bischoff to speak at the first BSM Summit in LA and why Shawn Michaels will be speaking at the 2023 event.

“Jason’s done a great job booking those guys to the Summit, and I think there’s a lot of crossover between their industry and ours,” Raj says. “We’re both entertainment. We’re both about drawing audiences. I don’t know if there’s a company in the world that’s better at digital and social media than WWE, so there’s a lot to learn from them.”

Even though they won’t share the stage, Raj Sharan is kind of in awe of the fact that he and Shawn Michaels are part of the same program. Sharan does not mince words. That man was his hero growing up.

Raj knows he isn’t guaranteed to get the chance to shake Michaels’s hand or even speak with the Heartbreak Kid, but he is going to be ready if it happens. He told me that he has thought a lot about what he would want to ask Michaels.

So far, all he has settled on is that he doesn’t want to ask Michaels about the infamous “Montreal Screw Job.” He is pretty sure Michaels has been asked about that night and the match against Brett Hart so often that he doesn’t even have to think about his answers anymore.

When I joke that it is the perfect chance to ask Shawn Michaels if it is bullshit that he once shared the World Tag Team Championship with Triple H but never with Marty Jannetty, Raj quickly points out an even more obscene example of The Rockers never receiving the recognition they deserved.

“He has a tag title with John Cena and not Jannetty! How?!? How does this happen?”

If 2023 will be your first BSM Summit, come prepared to learn. Raj says he still refers to notes he took during ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro’s conversation with Barrett last year. Be prepared to learn everywhere though. Sitting in your seat, listening to the people on stage is only part of the experience.

Raj says the conversations he has had in hallways and at cocktail receptions with FOX Sports Radio boss Don Martin and with Mitch Rosen, brand manager of 670 The Score and BetQL in Chicago, are just as important. This is an event that is not only about how you can succeed. It is about how the business can be better for everyone. People will be willing to share their thoughts on just about anything you want to talk about.

“One thing that’s really stood out from those conversations, it’s maybe not a specific piece of advice, but how there is no one right way to do this,” he says. “Everyone has different ideas, different strategies, different objectives, principles, etc. You can learn a lot from someone, even if their goals are a little bit different than yours and pick and choose and take some things that maybe apply to you and help formulate your strategy.”
