Rich Eisen Wants to Be on NFL Competition Committee

0

Rich Eisen is widely regarded as the face of NFL Network, but he wants his involvement with the league to run deeper. He told Dan Patrick that he wants to be the voice of fans and help shape the rules of the game to reflect what people can see with their own two eyes.

“Give me a damn seat on the competition committee already so I can be in that room and pound the table, Dan,” he said Wednesday on The Dan Patrick Show.

Eisen listed gripes that included roughing the passer calls not being reviewable and turnovers caused by fumbling the ball in the endzone. If fans at home are screaming at their TV that the call that was just made makes no sense, then the NFL should be listening.

“Somebody should represent the fan. You know, let’s change the catch rule! If there are fifty people in a bar and they can tell it’s a catch, let’s change the catch rule. Fifty people in a bar can tell the tuck rule? Let’s change the ruck rule,” he said. “Let me represent those fifty people in the bar. It may be a wine bar, but a bar nonetheless!”

Dan Patrick liked the idea. He told Rich Eisen that he recently had a conversation with his wife saying that he needed a new crusade in life. This may be the right one.

“I am somebody that should be in that room,” Eisen answered. “There is an I in Rich and Eisen, so I am using this platform for myself.”

The NFL’s competition committee has already held two meetings this week in Indianapolis ahead of the start of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Boston Celtics Voice Mike Gorman Explains Recent Health Scare, Reason For Eye Patch

0

Boston Celtics television voice Mike Gorman was curiously donning an eye patch during a recent broadcast, and he has now explained the situation that led to it being necessary.

During an appearance on Toucher & Rich Wednesday, Gorman explained he recently had a health scare related to his eyesight.

“They tested me for about two or three hours. They decided I didn’t have a stroke, which is good, but I did have a detached retina,” Gorman explained. “I had to be operated on within 48 hours, or I could’ve lost my eyesight forever. I was in the emergency room Saturday night and was being operated on Monday morning.”

Gorman said both of his eyes have now been dilated for a week, and the eye patch is necessary for light sensitivity, and joked about all the rumors he’s heard.

“With all the Internet speculation, people said I was trying to look like Johnny Depp [in Pirates of the Caribbean]. You know, just crazy stuff. So that’s what’s going on there, folks, if anybody cares. Everything is going to work out, though.

“[Doctors] said it takes about two or three months before vision returns. Each morning I wake up, it’s a little better. I wouldn’t be able to pick you guys out of a crowd because everything is all colors. But there weren’t colors before. It was just a black curtain.”

The medical issue for Gorman comes after he began scaling back his schedule for the 2022-2023 season, calling only home games and games in New York and Philadelphia. The 77-year-old has been the television voice of the club since 1981.

MSG Networks Launching Streaming Service This Summer

0

MSG Networks will become the latest regional sports network to launch a streaming service this summer.

MSG+ will be offered to fans at a $29.99 per month price point, which is the same monthly fee NESN charges subscribers in New England. Fans can also purchase a yearlong subscription to MSG+ at a discounted $309.99 price.

The new service will also allow fans to purchase broadcasts on a per-game basis, charging $9.99 for a single game.

Cable customers who currently subscribe to MSG Networks will be able to access the service similarly to MSG’s current mobile app MSG Go.

MSG Networks had previously hoped to launch the service in the second half of the NBA and NHL season, but a summer debut was decided upon to give the network more time to ensure a smooth launch.

The regional sports network has reportedly lost 9% of its subscriber base since 2021, as more and more cable consumers cancel their traditional linear television packages and shift to streaming-only subscriptions.

“The introduction of MSG+ this summer will be a significant milestone for our company and will offer a mix of subscription options for fans who do not subscribe to a traditional, bundled pay television subscription,” MSG Networks President Andrea Greenberg said.

The move by MSG Networks to introduce details for its streaming service offerings is the first in the lucrative New York sports market. YES Network has previously said it will offer a direct-to-consumer service for Yankees broadcasts in 2023, but offerings and pricing have yet to be finalized.

Kendrick Perkins: My Broadcasting Career Can Be Better Than My NBA Career

0

When Kendrick Perkins is doing any broadcast work for ESPN, he takes his role as an analyst in a serious way because he wants to make sure he does everything he can possibly do in his post-playing career as more opportunities have opened up for him.

Perkins was a guest on The Right Time with Bomani Jones podcast as they discussed Perkins’ new book, The Education of Kendrick Perkins: A Memoir. Perkins told Jones that he does still have regrets about not making the most of his playing career and he did not want to have any regrets about what he does in broadcasting.

“I had regrets. I still got regrets. I have regrets of what I didn’t do when I was playing and some of the offseasons I didn’t put as much into my craft as I should have. I’m not saying I could have been an All-Star caliber player, but I could have extended my career, I could have made more money, I could have added about 3-4 more years and I have regrets about that.

“When I came into this opportunity right here, I was like ‘I’m not having regrets in this. I’m about to put my all into it.’ If I have to got be up at five in the morning for a production meeting, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Perkins understands that not many role players are going to get the chances in TV that a Hall-of-Famer might get and that’s why he wants to take advantage of every opportunity and not have any regret whatsoever.

“I take it seriously. In this career, I’m fortunate to be here. I wasn’t a Hall-of-Famer. When a Hall-of-Famer finishes their career, they roll the red carpet out. It’s not like that for a guy like me that was a role player. When I came into it and this opportunity kept getting bigger and the door started opening up even more, I’m like ‘I have to take advantage of it. Why can’t I make this next career better than my first career?’ I shouldn’t have no regrets.”

At the beginning of his career, Perkins did say he was concerned with how he sounded on-air, but then he realized that what he says about basketball is more important than how he sounds and that he should continue to be himself:

“I’m going to talk slow, I’m going to talk with broken English, but you get what the hell I am saying. We talking basketball. Damn it, this ain’t English class, we are talking basketball. I started taking that approach. All of a sudden, I starting taking those old school lines when you are sitting at the spades table or dominoes table with them old heads and they get to hit you with them punch lines. I’m like how can I put this into this game or put this into what I’m about to breakdown and I started taking these bars and putting them into my vocabulary. People started saying ‘Perk crazy, where are you coming up with that?’

“It took a little while for people to get adjusted to me, but when they did, they are like ‘We love what Perk is bringing to the table’. That just gave me more fuel to continue to be myself.”

All an audience wants is for the people breaking down the game to be themselves and give as much knowledge as they can, With Perkins now not worrying about how he sounds, he can be entertaining and provide the insight people are looking for about basketball.

ESPN Gives Burke Magnus, Rosalyn Durant New Executive Duties

0

Last month, Bob Iger announced a restructuring at The Walt Disney Company. The move made ESPN a separate division. As a result, Jimmy Pitaro received a new title. Now that he is the Chairman of ESPN, others are seeing their roles and titles change as well.

Burke Magnus is the first beneficiary. He has been upped to President of Content. He will now oversee all content and news gathering operations.

Magnus had previously worked on securing rights deals for the network, particularly in the college sports space. He has also overseen a number of content initiatives in the past. Now, his duties will include supervising all content under the ESPN umbrella.

Rosalyn Durant is now the Vice President of Programming and Acquisitions. This is a return to ESPN for her. She comes back to the network after a stint in Disney’s parks division, overseeing facilities. In her new role, Durant will be charged with managing the network’s live game rights and acquiring new ones.

During her previous stint at ESPN, Durant was the head of the company’s college sports networks. She is considered instrumental in the launch of the ACC Network.

“There will be a period of transition for both Burke and Rosalyn. Burke will continue to be involved in certain negotiations during this transition period while Rosalyn wraps up her work,” Pitaro wrote in a memo obtained by Variety.

MLB Staffs Newly Launched Local Media Department

0

With the regional sports network model seeing some drastic upheval, MLB has tried to counter the situation with a new department inside its own corporate structure.

The league has launched a new Local Media Department, with eyes on overseeing all local production of MLB broadcasts.

Former AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh executive Doug Johnson has been hired as the Senior Vice President & Executive Producer of the new division. Johnson oversaw the day-to-day operations at the regional sports network.

Former Bally Sports Vice President of Finance and Operations Greg Pennell will serve as Senior Vice President of Local Media, overseeing all production of the local broadcasts.

Kendall Burgess will be the Vice President of Local Media Technical operations. She previously served in the same role at Bally Sports.

All three new hires will report to MLB Executive Vice President of Local Media Billy Chambers, who joined the league in that role last month.

Fox News Has ‘Duty to Remove’ CEO Suzanne Scott, Other Top Officials, Leading Analyst Says

0

Fox News remains embroiled in controversy after text messages revealing top network officials — from hosts to executives, and chairman Rupert Murdoch — behind the scenes knew the claims it perpetuated from the Trump campaign around the 2020 election were false.

However, a leading media and leadership analyst now claims the network needs to remove some of the executives that have proven to push false narratives.

Senior Associate Dean for Leadership Studies at the Yale School of Management Jeffrey A. Sonnenfeld told CNN’s Oliver Darcy that the Fox Corp. board should consider removing top executives, including CEO Suzanne Scott, to avoid the risk of potential litigation from shareholders.

“The board has a duty to remove such officials for proven misconduct,” Sonnenfeld said, adding that it was “acknowledged in the company’s own sworn testimony” that leaders of the company damaged the network’s credibility by their actions.

“If the board does not act appropriately,” continued Sonnenfeld, “it shows a failure of management oversight and jeopardizes their own directors and officers insurance protection with such gross conscious failure of diligent management oversight.”

The Yale Professor added that Murdoch owns 39% of the company, so any of the other shareholders can sue the organization “for misconduct, failure of management oversight, and conscious inadequate diligence”.

During recent findings in the Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against Fox News, it was revealed the Fox Corp. board member Paul Ryan begged network officials to “move on from Donald Trump” and “stop spouting election lies”. Sonnenfeld argued, however, that Ryan — along with other network officials — were guilty of “complicity through complacency”.

Bill O’Reilly: Corporate Media Outlets Have Betrayed Americans

0

During his O’Reilly Update Morning Edition Wednesday, former cable news host Bill O’Reilly argued that everyone has been subject to betrayal at one point or another. He argued that every American today is being betrayed.

“Today, every single American is being betrayed by politicians and the media that consistently mislead,” O’Reilly said. “The President and Vice President’s recent comments on the economy alone are stunning examples of blatant falsehoods. Add to that the corporate media that covers for Mr. Biden’s deceit, and the news agencies that falsely reported the election results of 2020 and you have a nation besieged by lies. It’s true. There’s no denying it.

“Yet, millions of Americans still approve of Joe Biden’s job performance and continue to watch and read crooked, corrupt media. Why? I can’t explain it. Yes, ideology can poison the mind, and many simply believe what we want to believe. Surely, there is a deceit limit. Or maybe not.”

O’Reilly’s insinuation that the 2020 Presidential Election was falsely reported comes at a time when his former television home — Fox News — is embroiled in controversy after it was uncovered that many at the network continually allowed and endorsed false claims about the election to be broadcast on the network while denying there was any wrongdoing behind the scenes.
