SiriusXM Sets Schedule For NFL Scouting Combine Coverage

The NFL Combine is this week, and SiriusXM NFL Radio will have listeners covered from start to finish in Indianapolis.

Sirius on Monday revealed plans for Combine week, which begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with The Opening Drive with Solomon Wilcots, Charles Davis and Charlie Weis.

SiriusXM will be broadcasting live from the Indianapolis Convention Center all week.

The SiriusXM Blitz with Bruce Murray and Kirk Morrison, and Movin’ The Chains with Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan will also be on location.

On Saturday, Miller and Kirwan will be live from 8 a.m.-noon for the final day of the Combine.

Additionally, John Hansen and Adam Caplan will discuss the Combine from a fantasy sports perspective live from 2-4 p.m. on Friday.

Kendrick Perkins is opening up about his journey through life, basketball and social justice in his new book The Education of Kendrick Perkins: A Memoir.

Perkins doesn’t shy away from discussing his own experience as a Black man in America in the book, how his upbringing and circumstances helped shape his worldview.

Talking to Stephen A. Smith on his podcast K[no]w Mercy, Perkins said when it comes to being a Black man in media, he learned from Stephen A. how to handle himself when Blackness gets questioned in the scope of work.

“I don’t give a damn, and I got that from you. I don’t give a damn, because I know who I am,” Perkins said. “And I thank you for raising me and being that big brother to me. Cause you have been that and more.”

“It’s crazy because it’s like we can’t go on television and do our damn job without our Blackness coming into question,” he added. “Like right is right, wrong is wrong. We don’t have to go on here and just say ‘oh you know what I’m just gonna stay on this because that’s what the hood wants me to do.'”

Gary Gerould Celebrates 3000th Game As Radio Voice of Sacramento Kings

Sports fans in Sacramento know the voice of Gary Gerould. He has been the radio voice of the Sacramento Kings since 1985. On Sunday, he passed a milestone as he called the 3000th game for the team.

“I’m terribly proud of it,” Gerould told KCRA-TV. “I don’t think I’m a big ego person, but yet this has a lot of significance to me because there are only a handful of people around the league who have had an opportunity to call 3,000 games with one organization.”

At 82 years old, Gary Gerould is still keeping a full schedule. He travels with the team to road games, something that is rare for the guys that have been calling the same team’s games for 38 years.

The Kings are not what first brought him to town. Gerould has been in Sacramento since the 60s, first as a sports anchor on local television. He has also covered a variety of sports for NBC during his career, including the Olympics.

Pat McAfee Officially Served Court Filing By Brett Favre

A reported lawsuit by Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre against pundits Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe wasn’t a joke. The former NFL punter claimed he was served court papers at his home over the weekend.

McAfee tweeted a purported photo of the civil case filing form Sunday afternoon, before discussing the matter to begin The Pat McAfee Show Monday.

“I’ve officially been served by Brett Favre,” said McAfee. “Came back from Hawaii to Indiana on Saturday. Slept, woke up on Sunday, lady at my front door. Open the door. ‘I am so sorry. I am a fan of the show. I just work for a company that was hired. These are for you.’”

He then joked that he told his dogs to sic the woman who served him the papers, saying “she wants to bankrupt our team”.

“It’s officially official. I have been sued by Brett Favre. Here we go … I’ve learned a lot about these Southern folks. I’ve watched those Murdaugh documentaries…I’ll tell you what, some of those powerful old whites are some real f—ing gems, aren’t they? Talk about some of the biggest scumbags on Earth. I’m not saying anything about anybody in Mississippi. I’m just talking about Low Country over there in South Carolina.”

A lawyer for Favre claimed he would “bankrupt” the former Indianapolis Colts punter, adding that a “Mississippi jury will make sure Pat McAfee learns to apologize”.

McAfee later joked that from the court papers he now is in possession of Favre’s home address, and he considered sending him a “hand-written letter”.

He then admitted “I don’t fully comprehend how any of this happened…I’ve reached out to a lot of different law people…I’m gonna have to hire a lawyer, ’cause there’s so much f—ing shit that goes into it, which I don’t love about the American process. Somebody can just file a fugaze lawsuit, now automatically I have to hire this lawyer, I have to go through this whole process, but I have to. I’m gonna have to do that.”

Michael Kay, Alex Rodriguez to Call MLB London Series for ESPN

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will play a weekend series in London this June, and ESPN has announced Michael Kay and Alex Rodriguez will serve as the network’s broadcast crew for the event.

Kay and Rodriguez have paired for the network’s alternate broadcast — The KayRod Cast — of Sunday Night Baseball, and also called a Wild Card Round playoff series together between the Phillies and Cardinals for ESPN last season. The pair will be joined by reporter Tim Kurkjian on the broadcast, which takes place on Sunday, June 25th, with coverage beginning at 10:00 AM.

Kay responded to the announcement on Twitter by saying “So excited about this!”

The trip marks MLB’s first return to London since 2019. The Cubs and Cardinals were scheduled to play one another in the English capital in 2020, but that matchup, as well as the 2021 and 2022 versions of the event, were shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Saturday edition of the two-game series will also be broadcast on FOX. Broadcasting crews for that matchup have yet to be announced, however, the network aired the broadcast in its premier FOX Saturday Baseball window, sending its top crew of Joe Buck and John Smoltz to London for the game in 2019.

Don Orsillo: ‘Wearability’ A Worry For Local Baseball Crews

You may hear Don Orsillo broadcasting national baseball games on TBS and FOX during the regular season and some postseason games on TBS in the past, but he arguably has been more recognizable as the TV voice of the Red Sox on NESN from 2001-2015 and now the voice of the San Diego Padres on Bally Sports San Diego.

As he heads into his 23rd season of calling baseball games on local networks, Orsillo was a guest on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast with Rob Bradford and he said that he has always done local broadcasts differently than national broadcasts since his days at NESN.

“I have a philosophy that I have had since NESN is that a local broadcast is that you are local, you are one of them. When I was in Boston,  grew up in New Hampshire, born in Melrose, went to Northeastern…I was one of them there. That was a crucial part for me that when I got to Boston, I was very comfortable, it was home…The local broadcast is different from the national broadcast because the local broadcast is every day.”

When Orsillo first started, he told Bradford that Joe Castiglione gave him two key pieces of advice and one of them was about being wearable for the audience listening at home because they are with you every day for six months out of the year.

“Joe Castiglione said something to me when I first started that really helped me out. He said two things. First of all, I had done 10 years of minor league radio when I got my major league job and I didn’t really know anything about TV. He said put a caption underneath the picture, don’t be captain obvious. It was great advice. Number two is local TV is about wearability. I didn’t really understand the term, but you can annoy people because you are going to annoy people whether you want to or not because you are on all summer in their living rooms for 6 months every day for 3.5, sometimes 4 hours.

“Wearability is not annoying people, but just discussion, conversations, let them get to know you, show some personality. Don’t miss anything, the game is the thing, eyes on the field all the time. We never miss anything in Boston and we aren’t missing anything here…It’s two guys kind of sitting in a bar watching a game together and that’s baseball, it’s fun. That’s local baseball in my point of view and it’s always worked out.”

Orsillo knows that when he and Mark Grant call a Padres game, his audience is not going to be glued to their TV screen or phone or tablet for every pitch, so content has to remain fresh. He has also been impressed that the Padres broadcasts did well in all age demographics a year ago.

“You’ve got to be cognizant of the fact that people are not going to be locked in on everything you say for 3.5 hours…With that in mind, you have to keep things fresh, you have to account for the fact that they’ve not been there for the entire time and you’ve got to bring something else. You’ve got to bring something else besides what’s there. You can not just do balls and strikes and old-school baseball. That time is gone. The success that I’ve had here in San Diego and my partner’s philosophy is exactly the same. It works and I’m a real believer in that.

“I think the thing that really has impressed me is I thought okay there are some older people that are not going to like that. As it turns out, we finished first last year in the older demographic which let’s be honest, baseball for the most part is, but we finished first 15-24, which told me the young fans are there to. Whatever it is, it’s working. It’s my philosophy and I’m not going to change it. No one has asked me to change it and we are having a bunch of fun here.” 

Joe Rose: No One at LIV Golf is Worried About Ratings

LIV Golf aired on The CW for the first time this weekend. Both sides had to be thankful that no money changed hands in the deal because the ratings were abysmal. John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reported that the Saturday broadcast drew just a 0.2 rating. 

Joe Rose doesn’t believe that number is enough to make anyone involved with LIV Golf give their venture a second thought. The WQAM morning man said all anyone involved with the Saudi-backed golf tour cares about is that the checks clear.

“I don’t think anybody’s worried,” Rose said on Monday. “I saw the winner got what, $3 or $4 million dollars? They split team money. $3 million divided by four guys on each team that won.”

Last year, all of the tour’s events were only accessible in the United States via YouTube. LIV Golf found very little appetite for its television rights on the open market before the start of the new season.

Rose isn’t so sure the tour is ready to be buried just yet. Despite the PGA Tour’s attempts to intervene, there are tournaments where PGA and LIV golfers will be playing together. Rose expects those events expose LIV Golf to new audiences.

“The best players are gonna be playing in all the majors. It’s gonna be great for business. The LIV players and the PGA players, there’s a bunch of bad blood.”

LIV Golf’s next event will be played at the Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, AZ on March 17. Friday rounds will be available exclusively through The CW app. Saturday and Sunday rounds will air on the network.

Chris Mack: Fans Would Pay $15 A Month For Favorite Teams After AT&T SportsNet Demise

AT&T SportsNet — a regional sports network offered in Pittsburgh, Houston, and Denver — is hoping to close up shop in March and allow the franchises it holds the television rights to reclaim their rights. Chris Mack of The Fan Morning Show believes Pittsburgh sports fans would be more than willing to pay nearly $200 a year to watch the Pirates and Penguins, which currently air on the station, in a streaming service.

“If people said to you you’ve gotta pay X amount of dollars as part of an al a carte system to just get the Penguin games and the Pirate games, would you pay separate so to speak?” co-host Colin Dunlap asked. “Or an app? Would you do that? Because I would.”

“Yes, because it’s the one thing that’s the most difficult to ensure you have access to when you cut the cord,” Chris Mack said. “It’s the one reason — for example in our house, we haven’t cut the cord completely because I want to ensure A) I have access to those games and B) that I also have access to DVR those games, so if I miss one I can go back and watch it later.

“It’s something I get the feeling they’ve already been thinking about, and they should have already been thinking about it. (Pirates owner Bob) Nutting should be calling up … Penguins owner John Henry, he’s an 80% owner in NESN and saying ‘Hey, how do you do it up there?’ because it works for the Red Sox and Bruins.”

“If you got a bill in the mail,” Dunlap asked, “and it said ‘Here’s the dollar amount’ one that you’d feel comfortable paying on a year basis … how much is that bill that comes in your mailbox? How much are you willing to pay for that channel and that channel only?”

“At least $10 a month,” retorted Mack. “$10-$15 a month.”

“Pittsburgh is still a really strong local market. That’s not a number you can fudge. You see it in the ratings. They bragged about that and rightly so,” Dunlap said.

“I think in Pittsburgh, that is a model that could work,” Mack added. “There are other markets where it won’t work because when the baseball team falls out of contention for five years, people do stop watching altogether… in Pittsburgh, people will watch. They may not go to the games all the time, but they will watch. They love their teams too much to not watch.”

Bomani Jones Says He’s ‘Linked Now’ With Jake Paul

Earlier this month, a clip from HBO’s Game Theory went viral. In it, an interview between host Bomani Jones and social media star turned boxer Jake Paul turned ugly when Jones asked Paul how he will continue selling fights after he loses for the first time. The segment ended with each man saying they do not really know who the other is.

On Sunday, Paul lost his first fight in a split decision to Tyson Fury. Jones tweeted a few jokes but largely thought that would be the end of it. That isn’t what much of the media, including the producer of his ESPN podcast had in mind, though.

“I’ve already talked about Jake Paul more than I intended to talk about Jake Paul,” he said on Monday’s edition of The Right Time with Bomani Jones. “I was doing the rundown of what I want to talk about and Parker was like ‘Oh, you’re not gonna talk about Jake Paul?’ and I was like ‘Damn, I guess I kinda have to, right?’. Like, we’re linked now.”

The fight aired on ESPN+ pay-per-view. That meant that Jones could have watched it for free if he wanted to, but reiterated that he had no plans to do that.

He said that it was apparent that while he may not be in the minority, there is an audience for Paul. The staff he works with at Game Theory is filled with people that wanted to get home on Sunday in time to watch the fight.

“You can say what you want about it man, but the game he’s running has absolutely worked. Like, I was shocked — when we were that story — how many people care about him, the visceral reactions it created,” Jones said.

Bomani Jones remains unimpressed with Jake Paul and unconvinced that he can sustain the interest that existed in his fights before losing for the first time on Sunday. Jones noted that doesn’t mean he was celebrating when Fury’s hand was raised in victory.

“I think people think I am happier about him getting his ass kicked than I actually am. I really do. There were blog posts ‘Bomani Jones delights in Jake Paul…’ No, I ain’t really delight in it. I don’t get anything out of that dude losing.”

Mike Bell, Trae Young Trade Shots on Twitter

92.9 The Game host Mike Bell and Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young have traded barbs on Twitter after Bell mocked an inspirational tweet from the two-time All-Star.

On Sunday evening, Young tweeted “we bound to fall against the odds, we get up & go crazy! Greatness (snow emoji) WeMove”.

In response, Bell tweeted “OK! Just more like last two.”

That is when the shots began, as Young fired back “shut up hoe. I don’t play for you”.

Bell countered by saying he pays for 10 season tickets for the Hawks, so in effect, Young does “play for him”. Young fired back by saying “You PAY to watch me. There’s a difference in an OWNER.”

Young left the exchange at that point. However, Bell marveled at the interaction early Monday morning before alluding to discussing it on Dukes & Bell later this afternoon.

“In my 24 years on the air in Atlanta I’ve been called a lot of names, but never a gardening tool,” Bell joked. “Talk to you at 2 on Dukes & Bell.”

The confrontation between the Atlanta sports station and Georgia sports star is the second in as many months. Earlier this year, 92.9 The Game host Steak Shapiro came under fire after criticizing University of Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV for his conduct during the team’s championship parade. Shapiro eventually apologized while noting he didn’t view the comments as “that inflammatory”.

Shapiro said on Twitter the interactions prove 92.9 The Game hosts are “doing a good job expressing our opinions which is kinda what we are paid to do”.
