CNN Adding New Bill Maher Show to Friday Night Lineup

0

Segments from Real Time with Bill Maher are being repackaged for a new show on CNN that will be seen on Friday evenings.

The Overtime segment from Maher’s Real Time show will air on CNN at 11:30 PM ET beginning Friday, February 3rd.

The segment features Maher and an assembled panel discussing news and pop culture topics. The segment had previously only aired digitally, but will now have a linear television home on CNN.

CNN has been open about its desire to add a comedian to its lineup. A report from Semafor earlier this month claimed “They’re looking for their version of John Oliver”.

The addition of Maher’s segments is a logical choice for the network, as Real Time with Bill Maher currently airs on Fridays at 10:00 PM ET on HBO. HBO and CNN are both owned by media conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery.

It is a return to basic cable for Maher, whose Real Time show has aired on HBO since 2003. He previously hosted Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher on Comedy Central from 1993-1996 before the show shifted to airing on ABC from 1997 to 2002.

Airing at 11:30 PM ET, Overtime will compete against late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, many of those programs offer re-runs on Friday evenings.

A data integration partnership between Liberated Syndicated — also known as Libsyn — and YouTube has been announced, with podcast advertisers specifically in mind.

Nearly 57% of podcast listeners claim they prefer podcasts with video, with YouTube being the chief driver of video podcasts.

“Podcasters are increasingly uploading their shows to YouTube as both a distribution and marketing channel and AdvertiseCast is continuing to offer richer data and insights on campaign performance for brand partners,” said AdvertiseCast Senior Vice President of Sales Anthony Savelli.

“YouTube is one of the most popular podcast listening platforms in the U.S. and usage share has steadily grown from 14% in 2019 to 24.2% in 2022. Libsyn was the first hosting company to support publishing podcasts to YouTube and this data integration furthers our commitment to the multi-channel approach and will provide better transparency to brands and advertisers.”

Libsyn’s AdvertiseCast has now partnered with YouTube to give real-time Interactive Advertising Bureau-compliant data to equip podcasters and advertisers with access to accurate podcast data from the streaming video platform.

Programmatic Podcast Ads To Triple By 2027

0

A new survey from podcast company Acast shows that ad buyers expect programmatic podcast advertisements to triple over the next four years.

“Programmatic is really having a moment of rebirth and it’s now being defined as what programmatic was meant to be — and maybe shedding some of the bad rap that it got because the way programmatic was launched 15 years ago,” said Acast Global Head of Ad Innovation Elli Dimitroulakos told Inside Radio. “Programmatic is vastly different today, and we’re much more smart with it.”

The company says while only 39% of marketers could define programmatic advertising, almost 60% have previously purchased programmatic ads.

Currently, 4-6% of podcast ad sales are of the programmatic variety, with that number projected to rise to 11-15% by 2027.

“Back in the day, programmatic was network buying, it was remnant inventory, and publishers adding a lot of ad slots on their websites – it was very much the Wild West,” Dimitroulakos said. “Today, when we talk about programmatic, it’s clean and the inventory is premium. It’s really just a way to transact.”

The survey also reveals that ad buyers view podcasts as a growth vehicle, with 84% saying the medium currently has low advertising loads.

Keith Olbermann: Lawrence O’Donnell Tried To Have Me Fired at MSNBC

0

Podcaster Keith Olbermann said Monday that MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell tried to take his job as host of Countdown while he was caring for his dying father. Olbermann made the comments on his Countdown with Keith Olbermann podcast.

Olbermann hosted the TV show from 2003-2011. According to Rolling Stone, Olbermann was suspended by the network in 2010 after donating money to three Democratic candidates for Congress. He reportedly agreed to part ways with the network many months after that, but speculation still abounds about whether he was fired.

Olbermann said he took a week or two off following his father’s death in 2010. Theodore Olbermann succumbed to complications from colon cancer.

“Then came the day when I went back to the office full-time and my assistant grabbed me,” Olbermann said. “Both hands on my wrist and said you did not answer my emails, for God’s sake do not ever leave me alone with Lawrence O’Donnell again. He’s a son of a bitch and he treats me, and every other person who isn’t a producer here like dirt.”

Olbermann stated that his assistant then revealed that O’Donnell was trying to get him fired from “Countdown.”

“If you think he (O’Donnell) is nuts, one of your assistant producers is in on it with him,” exclaimed Olbermann. “I have to admit, even now, of all the things I went through at that very, very strange place, MSNBC, even now, this story still shocks me.”

Olbermann said the senior producers of Countdown consisted of a guy that booked satellite transmissions for MSNBC and a former daytime guest booker.

“Another was an old friend of mine who had been blown out of ESPN in a sexual harassment lawsuit, porn link, email scandal and was headed back to college to start his career all over again until I asked that he be hired and then promoted,” said Olbermann.

Olbermann said before he could start digging for answers about why O’Donnell wanted him fired, the network announced O’Donnell’s new show called The Last Word. Olbermann said two of his senior producers followed O’Donnell to the new timeslot.

Olbermann added that the real-life saga was documented in the American TV series The Newsroom written by Aaron Sorkin.

Jason Whitlock: ‘I Refuse To Follow Script For Black Influencers’

0

The Blaze TV host Jason Whitlock is pushing back against critics who blasted his analysis of the Tyre Nichols video during an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight this past Friday. Nichols died from injuries sustained at the hands of five Memphis Police officers. Those officers have since been fired and charged with second-degree murder in his death.

Police released videos of the incident Friday. The gruesome images showed officers brutalizing Nichols following a traffic stop earlier this month. Whitlock shared the purpose of Monday’s Fearless with Jason Whitlock podcast was to address some of the things that he said on Carlson’s show.

“Sorry, I refuse to follow the script,” he said. “The script for Black influencers demanded that the Tyre Nichols tragedy be laid at the feet of so-called white supremacy. Five Black cops beat a 150-pound Black man to death and the script called for more mass shaming of white people and insinuations that policing be outlawed.”

Whitlock said that if he had followed that script, he wouldn’t be embroiled in controversy. Public figures such as pop singer Ciara took aim at Whitlock accusing him of undermining single Black women amid the tragedy.

“In fact, had I dishonestly blamed systemic, institutionalized racism for Nichols’ death, I would be the toast of Twitter, drowning in retweets, likes, and applause,” he said. “I would be high as a kite on dopamine and swimming in interview requests. But that’s not what I did when I appeared on Tucker Carlson’s cable news show.”

Whitlock stood firm on his analysis stating that he didn’t lie, and he didn’t concoct a narrative designed solely to please the mainstream media.

“I blamed the five cops for their criminal behavior and predicted that a predominantly Black jury will find them guilty of second-degree murder,” said Whitlock. “I then criticized CNN and other media outlets for hyping the release of the body camera footage like it was Al Capone’s secret vault and using the video to distract from America’s escalating involvement in the Ukraine – Russia conflict.”

“I said that the conversation we should be having about Tyre Nichols, centered on the cost of destroying the Black family,” he added.

FOX News’ Trey Gowdy Releases New Book About Success

0

Success has a different definition for each one of us. Former prosecutor, politician, and now Fox News host Trey Gowdy said success is an ongoing effort for him. In a new book, Gowdy shares the framework for what made him a successful professional. Recently, he joined The Brian Kilmeade Show to discuss his new project Start, Stay, or Leave: The Art of Decision Making.

“I write in this book about some of the best-known names in history,” said Gowdy. “Who defines success for you? It took me a while to get out of letting other people do it.”

Gowdy said that he used to follow the pyramid defined for success, meaning that he used to think that he needed to do things that other people didn’t do.

“I need the mirror approach,” he explained. “Do I like the person I see in the mirror? The people that are closest to me; my wife, my children, my parents, my closest friends, are they proud of what they see?”

Gowdy served as the U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district from 2011 to 2019. He served as a federal prosecutor in the District of South Carolina from 1994 to 2000 and then as the district attorney for South Carolina’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, comprising Spartanburg and Cherokee counties from 2000 to 2010.

“My parent’s generation was different. If you were good at something they thought that God gave you a gift and you had to use it,” said Gowdy. “I have kind of pivoted to, if he (God) gave you the gift, he should also give you the desire.”

Gowdy added that he takes a similar approach with his children in that if they are good at something, he uses love to guide his decision making and his approach to handle the situation. He added that over the years, he’s made some great decisions and some not-so-great ones.

Michael Cole to Pat McAfee: I Didn’t Know If We’d See You In WWE Again

0

WWE over the weekend held its annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view show, and in typical Rumble fashion the event didn’t go off without its fair share of surprise returns.

Among those returns was that of Pat McAfee to commentary. McAfee had last been seen on WWE television back in the summer. He took a leave of absence from his SmackDown responsibilities on Friday nights to go be an analyst on College GameDay.

McAfee’s SmackDown broadcast partner Michael Cole appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday and said he honestly didn’t think Pat would go back to WWE.

“I legit did not know if you were ever gonna be back,” Cole said, alluding to the fact that McAfee is now a father-to-be as a couple of big changes in his life. “And if you noticed I haven’t said much to anyone publicly about when you were coming because no one knew.”

Cole said he had prepared to call the Royal Rumble alongside broadcast partner Corey Graves, and it wasn’t until McAfee’s name flashed on the screen in the Alamodome that Cole realized what was happening.

“Paul Levesque was in my ear and he said, ‘Are you gonna sell it?’ And I mouthed to him in the spy cam, ‘Sell what?'” Cole said. “Then I looked up and saw your video board and I’m like oh my God you’re ribbing me.”

“I didn’t even know what to say and then when I saw you were in your blazer I was legit like so excited,” he added.

Cole said even his wife, who doesn’t typically watch WWE programming, tuned in and was excited to watch Pat make his return.

“She thought I was texting her to tell her that you were coming back. I knew nothing about it,” Cole said. “She texted me and said, ‘PAT!’ right in the middle of your entrance. It was craziness dude.”

Evan Roberts: Tony Romo Is Trying To Make Every Game Historically Significant

0

CBS Sports NFL analyst Tony Romo drew some criticism on social media on Sunday during coverage of the AFC championship game.

Romo caught heat for the second straight week trying to make comparisons of the quarterbacks in the NFL games he’s covering to the likes of Michael Jordan.

On Carton & Roberts on WFAN on Monday, host Craig Carton said he thought it was interesting how the perception of Romo has shifted a little bit recently.

“People are really down on him now,” Carton said. “Like he was all hot to trot, and now people think he’s not.”

Roberts said trying to compare Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow to Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler was quite a stretch.

“He’s in the end zone and immediately Tony Romo instead of talking about the throw, the play, goes into a soliloquy about Michael Jordan,” Roberts said. “I didn’t think the timing of that made any sense. It’s like what are we doing?”

That was precisely the reaction many had to Romo’s third quarter comments. Evan went on to say even with the comparison not really making sense, it was just the completely wrong point in the broadcast to bring something like that up.

“In the middle of a game – that doesn’t end the game – it’s a touchdown to put them up seven mid-third quarter – should not be moment where Tony Romo is pontificating about where this ranks in sports history. It was out of place,” Roberts said.

“Can we find an NFL reference? Is that possible?” Carton responded.

NBC Extending Deal With PointsBet

0

The partnership between NBCUniversal and PointsBet will continue for two additional years.

The original deal between the two sides was done in 2020 and good for five years. So this will take the contracted partnership into 2027.

As part of the agreement, NBCUniversal now owns an equity stake in PointsBet and has made the company the exclusive sports betting partner of NBC Sports.

PointsBet will now see a slight reduction in the ad spending requirement it currently operates under. The company had $90 million per year under the original deal, and according to Axios that figure will come down to $58 million.

The goal is to help PointsBet focus on advertising in the 14 states it’s licensed in to operate a sportsbook.

Jim Nantz Reveals He Spoke To Billy Packer Night Before He Died

0

Legendary college basketball commentator Billy Packer passed away last week at the age of 82.

Packer’s longtime CBS colleague Jim Nantz told Richard Deitsch at The Athletic that he did have a chance to speak with his good friend the day before he died.

“We talked on Wednesday night; he died on Thursday,” Nantz said. “And on Wednesday, I said to his son, Brandt, ‘If you get a chance, could you stick the phone in dad’s ear? Because I’d love to say hello.’ I tried to regale him with a few stories of shenanigans of yesteryear, and Brandt said later that Billy was smiling throughout. At the end, I told him I loved him.”

Nantz, who called NCAA tournament games alongside Packer from 1980-2008, recalled being an avid listener and follower of Packer’s when he was young. He said their initial meeting in 1979 paved the way for a friendship that blossomed over the last four decades.

“At that point, I could have never imagined that one day I would have the gift of being Billy’s partner longer than anyone — 18 of his 34 Final Fours — and that he would become so central in my life, even one day delivering a eulogy at my father’s funeral,” Nantz said.

Packer is remembered for his analysis and explanation of the game of basketball to viewers through the years. CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus likened Packer’s impact on the sport to that of the late John Madden’s in football and Vin Scully’s in baseball.

“He had a really good fundamental understanding of the game of basketball and a pretty good understanding on all the relevant players at the time,” McManus said. “When it came time to analyze a basketball game, it just flowed. It was a little bit unfiltered, which I think is for the most part good. But it was distinct.”
