Big Cat: Consistency Has Been Key to Rise of Pardon My Take

0

With most people having a podcast in this day and age, it is very difficult to stand out when there are so many options for listeners to choose from. One of the keys to finding success is being reliable and having your audience know that you will be around consistently. Dan “Big Cat” Katz, one of the hosts of Pardon My Take, views consistency as a major key to the success of the Barstool Sports show.

Katz was a guest on The Old Man and the Three podcast with J.J. Redick and Tommy Alter and he mentioned that Pardon My Take never takes a break and always wants content out there for their listeners.

“Just being consistent with what you put out there is something that seems very easy but gets lost by a lot of people. Every single day you are going to wake up, you are going to see me produce this, this, and this. Started as blogging, moved to podcasting. PFT and I — outside of the holidays — we don’t miss shows. There’s never a show where ‘Hey, we aren’t feeling it’. No, no, we do the shows. Even when we go on vacation, what can we bank that we can put out while we are on vacation?

“Having that consistency always being there for people I think makes you part of their routine and makes it anything than I could ever have imagined.”

While Katz understands that not every episode or every interview is going to be the greatest, he told the guys that the key is putting everything you got into every episode.

“There’s shows that aren’t the best, there are interviews that aren’t the best. It all ebbs and flows. You can’t be the funniest, most insightful podcast every single time. But, just being consistent and saying here’s what we got, we are going to put our effort into it, we are going to enjoy what we do and it has helped us get where we are today.

“You have to be a part of people’s lives. Knowing that people view you as a friend even though you don’t know them. I take that very seriously and never try to take advantage of the fact that people are investing their time in listening to me talk. Making sure you are putting in the effort and always showing up for them.”

Scott Zolak: Who At FOX Thinks Rob Gronkowski is Good?

0

Rob Gronkowski has been on a bigger stage since the NFL Playoffs started. FOX has put him on the FOX NFL Sunday set alongside its Hall of Fame crew of analysts. Scott Zolak of 98.5 The Sports Hub says it isn’t going well.

Zolak and Rob “Hardy” Poole broke down the former Patriot’s performance from halftime of Sunday’s NFC Championship game. Both immediately noticed how much trouble Gronk had pronouncing names and words as he tried to preview what he thought could be the keys to the day’s later game in Kansas City.

In trying to explain the prowess of the Cincinnati defense, Gronkowski pronounced Buffalo as “buffle” and “rattle Mahomes” as “rabble Me Homes”. That last one, Hardy says, made Gronk sound like a leprechaun.

“You’ve morphed into Lou Holtz!” Scott Zolak said listening back to the audio.

The entire Zolak and Bertrand crew remarked on how unnatural and uncomfortable Rob Gronkowski’s delivery is. That led Zolak to wonder why he is in the role in the first place.

“Who at FOX thinks this is good?”

While the show had plenty of laughs at Rob Gronkowski’s expense, Scott Zolak did stick up for him a little bit. He said he actually felt bad for Gronkowski because what some people online were using as evidence of his stupidity isn’t even what was actually happening.

“The sad part is people are ripping him saying he can’t read off a prompter,” Zolak said. “That’s not a prompter.”

He theorized that producers had worked with Rob Gronkowski to understand the window of time available. To Zolak, the mealy-mouthed delivery sounded like someone rushing through talking points they put together in their head.

Bob Fescoe: ‘Steven Spector Did More For Boomer Esiason Than He Ever Has For Us’

0

The NFL Today crew was on location Sunday for the AFC Championship Game. With Boomer Esiason stuck in Kansas City overnight, there was no way he could be in studio at WFAN Monday morning, so he connected with Gregg Giannotti and crew from Audacy’s Kansas City building. He left an impression, too, by stealing plenty of food from the company break room.

Audacy Kansas City has an honor system in place that allows employees to take the food they want and pay on a machine in the room. Esiason, never having seen that sort of set up before, assumed all of the food was free and claims to have taken ten items before 610 Sports Program Director Steven Spector said anything to him.

Giannotti called Spector this morning to confirm that Esiason was indeed a thief. Not only did Spector say he would cover the cost of the items the WFAN host took, but it was also revealed that he arrived at Esiason’s hotel this morning to drive him to the studio at 4:00 AM.

“Spector has done more for Boomer Esiason in one day than he has ever done for us,” Bob Fescoe told Josh Klingler on 610’s morning show. “If you and I were doing this, we’d be walked out.”

The guys listened back to audio of their boss on the air in New York. Fescoe noted that Spector sounded more like a fan than a colleague.

“There you go, Mr. Boomer! And a ride!”

Klingler said he expected the prices of everything in the break room to go up to make up for Boomer’s theft. Fescoe agreed and said that was a reason not to cover for the former NFL quarterback.

“I would have had the authorities here!” he said.

Boomer Esiason Defends NFL Analysts: ‘There’s A Million Things Going On’

0

NFL television analysts have become an easy target for viewers and media members alike, with Tony Romo, Greg Olsen, Cris Collinsworth, and Tony Dungy all receiving praise and criticism over the NFL Playoffs. However, WFAN morning host Boomer Esiason tried to defend them Monday morning.

During a discussion about the NFC Championship Game, Gregg Giannotti had mentioned that FOX Sports analyst Greg Olsen — who Gio has said will be heavily criticized after the Super Bowl — got a play very wrong Sunday.

“Greg Olsen messed that up,” Giannotti said. “He’s sitting there going ‘ DeVonta Smith’s running to the line saying hurry up, but he’s clearly in bounds so they’ve got nothing to worry about’. They end up running the play and they come back from break, actually, and end up showing that the ball had hit the ground.”

Esiason then took up for analysts, saying it’s more difficult than people think.

“I will just say, in defense of the guys on TV, there’s a million things going on and you can’t see everything,” Esiason said. “When plays are being run quickly, you don’t have a lot of time to be looking at your replays until they go away or go to break, and then you have time to look at it. And then you can actually discuss it. Kevin (Burkhardt) and Greg (Olsen) do a great job. I actually have come to like both of them, but they just didn’t have a chance to get to it.”

Boomer Esiason worked as an NFL television analyst for Monday Night Football for two years, calling Super Bowl XXXIV for ABC. He then shifted to an analyst role with Westwood One, where he continued calling Monday Night Football, and announced every Super Bowl for the radio network from Super Bowl XXXV through Super Bowl LII in 2018. His work in 19 consecutive Super Bowls is a broadcast record.

2023 Royal Rumble Sets Viewership Record

0

The 2023 WWE Royal Rumble — one of the marquee events on the company’s calendar — set a viewership record over the weekend.

According to a release from WWE, the Royal Rumble saw a 52% increase in viewership over the previous record, which was set in 2022. A cumulative figure wasn’t released, but the event was streamed on Peacock, which recently announced it had garnered more than 20 million subscribers.

In addition to setting viewership records, the event also became WWE’s highest-grossing ticketed event, bringing in more than $7.7 million in ticket sales, smashing a record set in 2017.

Also, merchandise and sponsorship records were reached. A 135% increase in merchandise sales was seen at the event held at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Sponsorship for the event was up a reported 200%, with new features like the countdown clock being sponsored by Applebee’s, and the first-ever sponsored match which saw superstar Bray Wyatt defeat LA Knight in the Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match.

WWE’s social media platforms also experienced highs after the event. A clip featuring superstars Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn saw more than 20 million views, becoming the most-watched WWE clip of the year. An appearance by Logan Paul in the Royal Rumble match also saw more than 26.5 million views across WWE’s and Paul’s platforms.

NASCAR Reportedly Intends To Take TV Rights To Open Market

0

Next year is the last one that NASCAR is contractually bound to FOX and NBC. So far, officials have been happy with the sport’s TV partners, but John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that the two networks should expect some competition.

The networks and NASCAR have begun negotiating a new deal, but Ourand says NASCAR intends to see what else is available to them. The exclusive negotiating window for FOX and NBC closes in March. The sport is expected to let that happen and take its rights to the open market.

There are plenty of issues that need to be worked out. The biggest is how revenue from a new deal would be split. Team owners currently get 25% of the sports’ media rights revenue. They are demanding a much larger cut of the next TV contract.

Another key issue is what exactly is up for sale. Ourand reports that like the NBA, NASCAR is exploring creating a third media rights package. That would likely be intended specifically for a streaming platform.

NASCAR hopes a deal can be finalized by the fall. The new TV deals wouldn’t start until the 2025 season though. There is no urgency to take a deal that doesn’t fit the sport’s needs.

Ourand is quick to point out that while NASCAR wants to test its value on the open market, it is engaged in conversations with FOX and NBC. Those talks “appear to be progressing smoothly” with the understanding that all parties involved want to stay in business together.

Dana Loesch: Newsmax Wasn’t Banned and Conservatives Weren’t Censored

0

Conservative video platform The First was the beneficiary of Newsmax demanding a carriage fee from DirecTV, as the video network was added to the satellite provider in Newsmax’s place. Dana Loesch — whose radio show is simulcast on The First network — says it’s disingenuous to say Newsmax or conservatives were censored, banned, or canceled.

While discussing her show now being seen on DirecTV Friday, Loesch made her feelings known that just because one cable outlet was swapped out for another doesn’t mean anything malicious had taken place.

“I’m gonna say a couple of things, and I’m not going to get into anyone’s business decisions,” Loesch said. “I’m not going to feed a media desire to create a frenzy where it’s not helpful. I can’t stand that stuff. I kinda go by the golden rule where it relates to conservatives or people on my ideological side that I know, but I will say this: no one was censored and no one was banned. That is such an inaccurate talking point. No one was censored and nobody was banned.

“There are just certain decisions that are made that have to do with business and fees or licensing and it doesn’t work out — and that was my understanding, I don’t run the business so I don’t know what…is publicly available. (DirecTV) was being asked to provide a carriage fee when one had not been provided before and that changed the nature of the professional relationship because they didn’t want to have to pass that cost on.

“So, it’s basically business decisions. It’s not because anybody was censored, it’s not because conservatives were canceled, and it’s not because anybody was banned. Do not be led…and do not be manipulated, because I do think it’s a way of being manipulated to make that claim because it’s false.”

Loesch’s comments come after many conservative commentators have blasted DirecTV’s decision to remove Newsmax — the fourth most-watched cable news channel — from its lineup. Congressional Republicans have gone as far as to claim public hearings on the decision are warranted. Many of those comments, however, came before the announcement that DirecTV had replaced one cable outlet — Newmax — with another in The First.

Amy Robach, T.J. Holmes Officially Depart ABC News

0

After news of a negotiation between GMA3 anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes and ABC News regarding their potential exit was revealed Friday, the deal is now official.

“After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, about different options, we all agreed it’s best for everyone that they move on from ABC News,” a network spokesperson said. “We recognize their talent and commitment over the years and are thankful for their contributions.”

The anchors became embroiled in controversy late last year after an investigation into an alleged romantic relationship between the separately married pair came to light. The reports were revealed in early December, with ABC News President Kim Godwin removing the anchors from Good Morning America’s third hour on December 5th.

“These decisions are not easy, they are not knee-jerk, but they are necessary for the brand and for our priority which, you guys know, are all of us — the people here at ABC,” Godwin reportedly told employees at the time of the announcement.

“There is a lot of frustration on all sides that it could have been handled better,” a source told CNN’s Oliver Darcy.

Robach joined ABC News in 2012 before anchoring GMA3 in 2020. Previously, she worked at both NBC News and MSNBC. Holmes was added to ABC News in 2014, also adding anchoring duties for GMA3 in 2020. Before his time at ABC, Holmes worked at CNN, BET, and MSNBC.

Miami Dolphins Returning to iHeartMedia Miami

0

After being heard on Audacy-owned WQAM and Kiss Country 99.9 for seven seasons, the Miami Dolphins are returning to iHeartMedia Miami.

The team has officially announced it is returning to classic rock station Big 105.9 and FOX Sports 940 AM. The Dolphins aired on the two stations from 2010 through 2015. The team had a longstanding relationship with WIOD, where its games aired for 35 years. WIOD is now a sister station of the new rights holder.

“We are excited about this partnership and honored to be the new broadcast home of the Miami Dolphins,” said iHeartMedia Sports President Kevin LeGrett. “The Miami Dolphins are the city’s premiere sports team and with the massive multiplatform reach and scale that iHeartMedia can provide, we have the ability to deliver great programming and coverage to millions of fans across the state and beyond.”

Current play-by-play announcer Jimmy Cefalo will continue with the franchise. Cefalo hosts the morning show on iHeartMedia’s WIOD. Joe Rose will return as the team’s color analyst. He currently hosts The Joe Rose Show with Zach Krantz on WQAM, which the franchise is departing. Kim Bokamper will remain as the team’s sideline reporter. All three are former Dolphins players.

“iHeartMedia Miami-Fort Lauderdale is thrilled to welcome the Miami Dolphins back home,” said iHeartMedia Miami Market President Shari Gonzales. “It’s an honor to again partner with the Dolphins for years to come and to help expand the opportunities to touch the team’s local and worldwide fan base.”
