Audacy Reportedly Planning to Add Single-A Broadcaster to Mets Radio Booth

0

Wayne Randazzo has left the Big Apple for the City of Angels. That means the New York Mets are in search of a new voice for their radio broadcast team. Just like when there is a need to fill a hole on the field, the team’s farm system may produce the answer.

According to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post, Keith Raad has emerged as the leading candidate for the job. Raad spent last season calling games for the Mets’ single-A affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Raad was reportedly impressive in his interview with Audacy bosses. Audacy is the parent company of the Mets’ flagship station, WCBS. While he is their desired target, the team does have to approve his hire.

There should be no doubt about Keith Raad’s passion. He is a lifelong Mets fan who grew up on Long Island.

The exact number of games Raad would be expected to call is not known at this time. Howie Rose made the decision last year to cut back on the number of dates he spent in the team’s radio booth.

Rich Shertenlieb: NESN Really Did Chaim Bloom Dirty

0

NESN recently aired video from the Boston Red Sox Winter Weekend in Springfield, MA. During the event, team owner John Henry and Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom sat down with Tom Caron to answer questions about the future of the franchise.

Raw video from the event has been floating around social media that shows that Henry received a lot of heckling and boos when he spoke. Most of it was edited out when the event aired on NESN. Tuesday morning on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Toucher & Rich played some of the real audio and edited audio side by side.

“If you’re asking if any of the boos were left in, sure they were! But it was a little bit of a pick-and-choosing when and who was talking when the boos were aired,” Rich Shertenlieb said.

He pointed out that the audio was manipulated more significantly when Henry spoke. More of the audience’s true reaction was preserved during Bloom’s responses. To illustrate this point, they played a clip that had audience backlash to John Henry saying that this past season was disappointing edited out completely while the boos for Bloom answering the same question were not manipulated at all.

Fred Toucher joked that the audio made it sound like the stage manager “had slides of Chaim Bloom pushing old ladies over” and must have shown the audience photos of “Chaim Bloom flipping off kids.”

“They did Chaim Bloom dirty,” Shertenlieb said. “They took out all the boos for John Henry and let in every single one of them for Chaim Bloom.”

Chad Finn of The Boston Globe reached out to NESN about the editing. They responded that the presentation was edited and the audio was manipulated but insisted that it was nothing nefarious or abnormal.

“The show tonight at 8p — as is always the case with television production,” the network responded, “we made tweaks where needed to accommodate sound quality in the unique amphitheater environment at MGM and condensing a 90-min period to the hour-long format of the show. With that said, the lion share of the ownership/front office Q&A is included in the show.”

Shertenlieb is not buying that explanation. He played raw audio of the audience booing and heckling John Henry when he said it was expensive to field a winning baseball team. That is why the team raises ticket prices. The NESN audio cut out the response to Henry and the team owner was not heard from again during the telecast.

“Either he talked and they edited it out or he just didn’t answer for the rest of it,” Shertenlieb said. “And they really did Chaim Bloom dirty, because when Chaim would speak they left in every single boo and they edited out the time when John Henry spoke and all those boos that we heard, where he got the worst response, were cut out.”

Knicks Fire Radio Analyst Brendan Brown

0

MSG Networks has parted ways with Brendan Brown. The analyst on Knicks’ radio broadcasts was let go after allegations of verbal harassment. Details of those accusations are not available, but Andrew Marchand of The New York Post reports they were investigated by the team’s human resources department.

Brown has been absent from Knicks broadcasts recently. The team has turned to Alan Hahn, Monica McNutt, Wally Sczerbiak and John Wallace in his absence.

“MSG Networks and Brendan Brown have decided to part company,” an MSG Networks spokesman said in a statement. “For the remainder of the season, various personalities, including former Knick John Wallace, will serve as the Knicks radio analyst on the MSG Radio Network on ESPN.”

The rotation of analysts is only scheduled to go on through the end of the season. The permanent future of the spot alongside play-by-play man Ed Cohen will be determined at a later date.

The Knicks have employed Brown since 2008. He has served in a variety of roles. He was an advanced scout prior to moving into the radio booth full-time in 2012.

Marchand reached out to Brendan Brown, who declined to comment on the accusations.

Erick Erickson Bothered By Media Beliefs and Bigotries

0

Over the weekend, riots broke out in Atlanta as windows were smashed, police cruisers were burned, and people were arrested. Some blame the media for downplaying the situation. A local Fox TV affiliate aired a live shot with a reporter describing the protests as “mostly peaceful” as a vehicle burned in the background.

Syndicated radio host Erick Erickson, whose show is based in Atlanta, shared Monday that he has become bothered by the media being captured by its own prejudices, beliefs, and bigotries.

“I actually think we as a free people do have to have a free press,” said Erickson. “I think it’s important, particularly at a local level, that we have reporters, journalists, willing to ask tough questions of both sides of the aisle investigating corruption, exposing it for the public, I think that’s actually a very useful purpose.”

Erickson said increasingly we don’t have a free press. He cited an interview on CNN that took place during the riots with independent journalist David Peisner who said property damage didn’t equate to violence.

“I think that there’s a real blurring of the lines in the use of the word violence. Is property destruction violence? To some people it certainly is. But, you know, this idea that breaking windows or other acts of property destruction are the same as actual violence against humans, it’s kind of a dangerous and slippery concept,’” he said.

Erickson said the lack of willingness to label what happened in Atlanta as violent is something you hear from the people committing the crimes themselves.

“This is an echo we hear from a lot of protestors, left-wing rioters, and left-wing terrorists,” Erickson said. “Property destruction is different from physical violence because it’s not real violence because there’s no victims. Except, there are victims you just don’t see. The selfishness of these protestors and the media entertaining this.”

Twitter Testing Feature That Places Media Company’s Logo on Reporter’s Account

0

Verified journalists who use Twitter have always been able to use their personal accounts interchangeably for business without being directly tied to their employer. According to the Press Gazette, a new feature being tested would make that distinction nearly impossible.

The Daily Mirror’s parent company Reach is working with Twitter to test a feature that would place the media organization’s logo right next to the account holder’s Blue check mark. The experiment involves several Mirror journalists including Alison Phillips, Lizzy Buchan, Jason Beattie, and Mikey Smith. Readers who click on the company’s logo are directed back to the brand’s official account.

“So far it’s been a useful tool for us – making it clearer that our smaller accounts and affiliated journalists are trustworthy sources which are verifiably connected to the Mirror brand,” said Reach head of social, Yara Silva.

Twitter has been under scrutiny since Elon Musk purchased the platform last year. According to media reports, Musk’s final purchase price of the company was around $44 billion. Since the purchase, Musk has introduced new initiatives to make the company both profitable and more trustworthy. Some pundits see misinformation as the biggest hurdle facing Twitter.

According to Nieman Lab, another interesting point about this latest test feature are the discussions that are bound to happen in newsrooms across the world. If a reporter has an account name that his/her employer objects to, will that journalist be forced to start a new account? Also, if an employee changes jobs, what happens to their followers?

A lawsuit brought by The Roanoke Times nearly five years ago sought to regain custody of a former sports reporter’s Twitter account when he left for The Athletic. Andy Bitter inherited the account from his predecessor. The account had accumulated more than 27,000 followers.

The biggest question about this proposed feature is if it takes effect, will media organizations have intellectual property rights over their employee’s Twitter accounts. The feature is part of what was previously Twitter Blue for Business and is now known as Twitter Verification for Organizations.

Dan Bernstein On Skip Bayless: ‘I Saved His Dumb Ass’

0

Skip Bayless is no stranger to being roasted on the internet. Usually, it is about a wildly, hot take. On Monday, it was for a strange video he made following the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs.

In the video, Bayless can be seen stomping into his kitchen holding a Dak Prescott jersey. He holds it up to the camera before throwing it in the garbage in a huff.

“He’s just a very, very odd dude,” 670 The Score’s Dan Bernstein said on Monday in response to the video. “Now he’s the world’s biggest Cowboy fan? Now he’s waving pom poms for the Cowboys?”

Bernstein didn’t elaborate much on what it is that makes Skip Bayless so odd, but he did mention that he had first hand knowledge and insight.

“I mean, he’s a very very very strange man. I’ve hosted shows with him. He’s just odd,” Bernstein said.

His partner Laurence Holmes was surprised to learn this. Holmes asked if it was possible he may have produced one of those shows.

Bernstein said it was. He recalled a particular show they hosted together where he had to pull Bayless back from saying something he would have regretted.

“I prevented him from getting in terrible trouble for what he almost said about Daunte Culpepper and I had to step in real quick.”

While Bernstein didn’t specify what it was Skip Bayless was about to say, he did note that Bayless was hung up on how Culpepper was “different” from other quarterbacks.

“I saved his dumb ass, because he wasn’t going to say that.”

Holmes said what adds to the strangeness of Bayless’s persona is the way he seems to still be playing into his former partner’s bit. He noted that Skip Bayless has started creating content about being the world’s biggest Cowboy fan around the same time that Stephen A. Smith has made a bit out of being a notorious Cowboys hater.

“It’s a really weird dance that they’re still doing even though they’re not partners anymore,” Holmes said.

Pat McAfee: Kelce Brothers Have One Of The Top 2 or 3 Shows In the World

0

Podcasting has democratized sports media content across multiple platforms. Now, active players have the chance to take advantage of a direct line to fans to tell their own stories. Few players are doing that better right now than the Kelce brothers according to Pat McAfee.

McAfee welcomed Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce to his show on Monday. He told Kelce that players everywhere should be paying attention to what he and his brother Jason, an offensive lineman in Philadelphia, have created.

“I want players to be rich forever and be successful, and I think every single player’s story is worth money,” McAfee said. “I think the NFLPA needs to do a better job telling everybody that more in like workshops and things like that. But your and your brother’s show is like a top two, top three show in the world right now, dude.”

The show, New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce has experienced tremendous success. It routinely shows up on lists of the most downloaded sports podcasts on the internet. Pat McAfee says it isn’t hard to understand why.

“When you guys are chopping it up, it is so f***ing great. I’m enjoying the hell out of it.”

Kelce acknowledged that the show has been a lot of fun to put together. He says that recording sessions have become benchmarks of his week. That isn’t possible without The Pat McAfee Show.

“You guys paved the way though,” Kelce told McAfee. “You guys have been doing it the right way and gave us the confidence to want to tell our stories and eventually be able to bring in our friends.”

“Well, your show is much better than ours,” Pat McAfee fired back.

FOX To Air Documentary About Gus Johnson Attending Harvard

0

The life of a broadcaster is busy enough already. Imagine adding classes at Harvard to the schedule! That is what Gus Johnson did this year while calling college football and basketball for FOX and the network wants to take people inside that experience.

Back to School with Gus Johnson is a one hour special documenting Johnson trying to balance the two demanding realities. It will air on February 18 on FOX.

“I was nervous about letting people into my life, but I thought if I could show kids through my journey that education is cool, it was worth it,” Gus Johnson said in a press release. “I think this is a really good story and hope that it inspires. I also hope fans enjoy watching some fantastic folks at a great school, and get new insights into sports as well as the pursuit of lifelong learning.”

Johnson was recruited to be a part of Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative in 2022. His classmates in the year-long program included business and social leaders from around the world. During that time, not only did he call college football and basketball for FOX. Johnson also called some NBA Playoff games for TNT.

University of Michigan football coach, Jim Harbaugh and Harvard basketball coach, Tommy Amaker both appear in the film as do other stars from the sports world.

“FOX Sports is honored to shine a spotlight on Gus Johnson’s story from becoming one of the most iconic voices in all of sports to his truly inspirational new journey through academia,” Charlie Dixon, Executive Vice President & Head of Content for FOX Sports, added. “Gus is a one-of-a-kind talent, and we couldn’t be more excited to give audiences a special look into his illustrious career and the impactful work he is doing at Harvard.”

Back to School with Gus Johnson is a collaboration between FOX and Coaches+ Media. It will air on February 18 ahead of a Michigan State vs. Michigan basketball game, where Johnson will the call the action.

JJ Redick: Being Pro-Player Is Not a Bias

0

JJ Redick has been a rising star since arriving at ESPN, whether it’s been debating with Stephen A Smith on First Take or being a color commentator on NBA games.  Redick does view himself as being pro-player from his 16-year career in the league, but he does not view that as a negative.

“I don’t look at being pro player as some sort of bias,” he said this week on the Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson & Darius Miles podcast. “I do think there are narratives, not just on First Take, about Lebron, Kevin [Durant], Steph [Curry] that I think are stupid. I think there are bad narratives.”

JJ Redick did mention that last year he felt he had to cross the pro-player threshold when he talked about the situation in New Orleans where CJ McCollum hadn’t heard from Zion Williamson after McCollum was traded to New Orleans. He didn’t feel bad about anything he said for two different reasons.

“One, I said everything I said on camera to Zion personally because I was his teammate. Two, some of that stuff was about the sanctity of the team.

“I had to go talk about Kyrie/KD/Nets. Some of that is uncomfortable to talk about because I want to be pro-player. I want to support all players. I’m a fan of basketball. But, sometimes you f up the sanctity of your team, we need to have a discussion about that.”

Back in September, JJ Redick signed a three-year deal with ESPN and for a player who didn’t think he would ever work in media, he is happy to be doing what he is doing now.

“Last year I looked at as like a test run. What do I like to do, what things are important to me, what do I want to do? For me, it’s calling games and First Take. I like battling with Stephen A. I like doing that stuff.”
