Howard Stern: Jon Stewart Should Run for President

SiriusXM host Howard Stern expressed his admiration for comedian Jon Stewart and called for him to run for president. Stern, who had just returned from vacation, said he binge-watched Stewart’s shows while away.

According to Mediate, Stern compared Stewart’s potential political career to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, an actor/comedian turned politician. “Over vacation, I’m watching a ton of this one guy, and I’m watching him debate all kinds of different people. Going back years ago, he was debating Bill O’Reilly… And he came off brilliantly,” Stern said.

“You know he would work his ass off to be a good president. I’m telling you, he could also win cause people like Jon Stewart,” Stern said. 

He described Stewart as “so f****ing smart and bright and also witty and measured when he takes on a debate.” Stern’s co-host, Robin Quivers, added that Stewart showcases his care for specific issues through his strong debating skills.

Stern insisted that Stewart would make a great president and even suggested that he could win the election because “people like Jon Stewart.” Quivers pointed out that Stewart had given up The Daily Show because it was too much work, to which Stern replied that Stewart owed it to his country to run.

Stern clarified that he has not spoken with Stewart about running for president. However, his praise for the comedian’s intelligence, wit, and measured approach to the debate was apparent. Only time will tell if Stewart takes Stern’s suggestion to heart and enter the political arena.

Evan Roberts: NFL Would Never Let Roger Goodell Talk To Craig Carton

Craig Carton would love to interview NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, but the problem is that Carton isn’t going to play by the league’s rules for shaping the conversation.

On Monday’s edition of Carton & Roberts, Carton mentioned the fact that Goodell hadn’t appeared on WFAN airwaves in over a decade. Co-host Evan Roberts pointed out that the league usually limits what media appearances the commissioner makes.

“He doesn’t do a lot of interviews unless it’s NFL related, where you can kind of control what you’re being pushed on,” Roberts said.

Carton figured that Goodell typically will do a sit-down interview with each of the league’s media partners, but Roberts said the commissioner’s office wants to make sure Goodell is not caught off guard.

“There’s always gonna be restrictions on him. There just always is,” he said. “The league is partners with those networks. So they’re not gonna put Roger Goodell in a spot in which he’s getting pummeled with tough questions. He doesn’t put himself in that spot.”

Carton mentioned doing a commissioner’s summit with Gary Bettman, Adam Silver and Rob Manfred. He said he requested Goodell, and he was turned down because the preseason had already started and generally the NFL doesn’t want the commissioner in the spotlight when the focus should be on the games and the players.

Roberts responded that the league was just being protective of Goodell knowing full well that Carton would likely ask him some tough questions.

“It’s because you aren’t going to climb in his derriere and make sure you don’t push him on anything,” he said. “I’ve never seen Goodell pushed on anything. So when he does do these interviews, it’s usually like NFL Network’s putting him on.”

“Maybe if I start a podcast he’ll come on that,” Carton said.

Craig added that he wouldn’t agree to tipping his questions for the commissioner ahead of time or only sticking to certain topics. Evan said the unpredictability of a free-flowing interview wouldn’t be a good thing optically for Goodell.

“You also don’t know what it’s gonna lead to,” he said. “You don’t know what he says that’s gonna lead to a topic you never even thought that you’d talk about.”

Carton responded saying that’s why so many people are terrible at interviewing others, because they generate their list of questions and don’t actually listen to the conversation.

ESPN Employees Brace For Major Layoffs

As the restructuring at Disney continues under CEO Bob Iger, tough decisions regarding people’s careers with the company are being made.

The jobs of 7,000 Disney employees will be eliminated as the company tries to save $5.5 billion in costs.

Stephen A. Smith, on a recent episode of his podcast K[no]w Mercy, said ESPN is not going to escape unscathed.

“ESPN is under the Disney umbrella,” Smith said. “They’re going to have cuts coming.”

ESPN has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years. According to Front Office Sports, 700 jobs have been cut, including those of anchors, reporters and analysts, since 2015.

Stephen A., who has an annual salary of $13 million, said no one’s job is safe.

“Hell, for all I know, I might be one of them,” Smith said. “Now, I doubt that. But it’s possible. No one knows.”

Cameron Maybin Adds Radio to Tigers Broadcast Role

The Detroit Tigers have added another voice for their radio broadcasts this season in Cameron Maybin.

Maybin will be behind the microphone for around 30 Tigers games on 97.1 The Ticket in 2023.

Maybin is a former Tiger himself and will also do some TV work on team broadcasts on Bally Sports Detroit. Cameron has also contributed to Yankees broadcasts on YES Network and MLB Network.

Dan Dickerson will be on play-by-play for games on the radio this season.

Pat McAfee: I Tried To Give NFL Insiders Chance To Break Adam Thielen Signing

Pat McAfee wishes NFL insiders like Ian Rapoport would break league news while appearing on his show. He never thought he would have the chance to break some free agency news himself.

Over the weekend, wide receiver Adam Thielen reached out to McAfee on Twitter asking if Pat wanted to break some news. McAfee hesitated initially before responding, but Thielen tipped McAfee off about his new deal with the Carolina Panthers.

On his show Monday, McAfee said part of the reason he waited was because he wanted to give the true insiders like Rapoport a chance to report it first.

“I am not an insider’s business person, and I assume every minute counts in this entire game,” McAfee said.

Pat added that he thought with time being of the essence, eight minutes was more than enough time for the insiders to do their part.

“I gave eight minutes there to be like, this is not my game,” McAfee said. “There’s people that work their f***ing asses off to get this type of thing.”

Phoenix Suns Radio Voice Al McCoy Retiring At Season’s End

Longtime Phoenix Suns radio play-by-play announcer Al McCoy has announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the current NBA season.

The 89-year-old McCoy has been the voice of the Suns for the past 51 years.

After joining the team in 1972, McCoy called games on both television and radio for the franchise until the NBA outlawed the practice in the early 2000s.

He scaled back his schedule in 2010, and called road games from a remote studio in Phoenix during the 2020-2021 season. The club’s road contests are currently broadcast by Jon Bloom.

“Well I don’t think it’s any big thing because I think everybody knew this was probably going to wrap it up for me obviously,” McCoy told KTAR News’ Gaydos & Chad on Friday.

McCoy was honored with the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy Media Award in 2007.

Peter King: Adam Schefter Shouldn’t Be Surprised Aaron Rodgers Told Him to ‘Pound Sand’

Colleague or not, Peter King is not running to defend Adam Schefter after the ESPN NFL insider was told “lose my number” by Aaron Rodgers last week. In this week’s Football Morning in America column, King writes that even though he is a celebrity at the center of the NFL’s biggest story, Rodgers still has the right to privacy if he wants it.

“Adam Schefter is free to pursue leads and stories and info/rumor confirmation in any legal manner he sees fit,” King wrote. “But if Aaron Rodgers did not personally provide a contact tel # to Adam Schefter and grant permission for Schefter to contact him, then Schefter should be neither chagrined nor surprised when Rodgers tells him to go pound sand.”

Schefter has not complained about the interaction, though some colleagues have called Aaron Rodgers out. It seemed he published the text exchange in good spirits after Rodgers talked about it on The Pat McAfee Show.

Peter King notes that there was a time when the NFL made sure reporters had every phone number they needed. That isn’t the case anymore and he understands why.

“I’ve witnessed the pendulum swing, from the days of everybody knowing (or having access to) everybody else’s phone number, to heightened privacy concerns a few decades later, now to google providing instant access to background checks and personal info on billions of people worldwide, with just a few clicks,” he wrote. “Being a celebrity or a public figure in no way diminishes anyone’s right-to-privacy vs an unknown neighbor two blocks over.”

King also acknowledges that it may be hard for the audience, particularly its younger members, to understand his position. We live in a world where so many put their lives on social media. If Aaron Rodgers isn’t one of those people though, King writes it is not unreasonable for him to be put off by someone having his contact information that he did not give it to.

Bill Frady Joining 106.3 WORD As Midday Host

Longtime Greenville radio host Bill Frady is joining 106.3 WORD as its new midday host.

Frady joined the station as a fill-in host in 2015 and has hosted a weekend show called LockNLoad, and will now expand his presence on the Audacy-owned station with the addition of Straight Talk with Bill Frady.

“I’m excited to join the all-star weekday lineup on 106.3 WORD,” said Frady. “As a long-time listener and fan of the station, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my voice and fire up WORD’s fast-growing audience between 10:00 a.m. and noon each weekday.”

Frady, a military veteran, debuted the show Monday.

“Bill Frady has provided great content doing swing shifts on 106.3 WORD for years,” said Audacy Greenville-Spartanburg Senior Vice President and Market Manager Steve Sinicropi. “Bill is a native Greenvillian, a recognized firearms expert, and a tremendous conservative voice that will complement WYRD-FM’s incredible news and talk talent lineup.

Steve Rosenberg Out As President of Diamond Sports Group

A company declaring bankruptcy is never good for the people at the top. Steve Rosenberg is experiencing that right now. He is out as the president of Diamond Sports Group.

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that a memo went out to the company on Monday morning announcing the change. In it, Diamond CEO David Preschlack wrote that CFO David DeVoe will assume Rosenberg’s responsibilities for now.

Steve Rosenberg joined Sinclair in 2020. He replaced Jeff Krolik as the company’s president of local sports.

Last week, Diamond Sports Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company intends to work out new deals with the NBA and NHL for its Bally Sports RSNs in hopes that it will remain in tact. Ourand writes that an attempt to do the same with Major League Baseball has not yielded meaningful results as of yet.

“With the recent appointments we have made to the senior leadership team, and the talented staff we have throughout the organization, I am confident in this team’s ability to work together to execute our strategic goals at this time,” Preschlack wrote in his memo.
