After more than a dozen votes, Kevin McCarthy has now been elected as the Speaker of the House. It’s the first time in more than 100 years the process took so long, and there were mixed reactions from media pundits. However, Rich Zeoli of 1210 WPHT was not happy with one opinion in particular.

MSNBC host Nicole Wallace believed only those who are controlled by foreign adversaries were joyous over the political disfunction.

“This is a tragedy for American democracy,” Wallace said last week. “The only people enjoying this are probably newscasters attached to Kremlin state media but I think that it is clear that when we talk about Fox’s influence over the right, it is clear that it is on steroids. Tucker Carlson has been waging a campaign against Kevin McCarthy for years — on the airwaves, not secretly — and these folks voting against Kevin McCarthy are out of things to ask for outside of kidneys and lungs.”

Zeoli did not respond favorably to that perspective, calling Wallace a “fraud” and a “fake Republican”.

“If you have any position that differs from their position, it’s Russia and it’s Russian propaganda,” the Philadelphia afternoon host said. “MSNBC’s fake former Republican Nicole Wallace, who was a war-mongering, neo-con, big surveillance state Republican when she was a Republican and now she’s all those things on MSNBC.”

Zeoli also took issue with one of the panelists joining Wallace insinuating that Tucker Carlson was who the MSNBC host was alluding to with her “newscasters attached to Kremlin state media” line.

“Tucker Carlson going against Kevin McCarthy benefitting Russia? I don’t even follow that,” continued Zeoli. “Donald Trump — who is apparently the number one Russian agent — is putting his neck out on the line for Kevin McCarthy multiple times. So if Donald Trump is the biggest Russian stooge, and he’s angling for Kevin McCarthy, how is Tucker a Russian stooge because he doesn’t? It’s so stupid, I can’t even get my mind around it.”

Craig Schwalb Named WBBM Brand Manager, News Director

Audacy has found Ron Gleason’s successor. The company has hired Craig Schwalb as the new Brand Manager and News Director of WBBM in Chicago.

Schwalb steps into the role vacated by the retirement of Ron Gleason, who led the station for more than 17 years.

Chris Fowler: Games With Kirk Herbstreit Are Always ‘Spontaneous’

Whether it’s been on College GameDay in the past or calling the big Saturday game of the week on ESPN/ABC, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit have worked together for 27 years. It is a special bond where if you work with somebody that long in your life, you tend to know the person very well.

Fowler was a guest on The Press Box podcast with Bryan Curtis and he said because he knows how Herbstreit views the game, they don’t really discuss what the gameplans are for each team going into a game as they prepare to call the CFP National Championship Game Monday night, which surprises many in the industry.

“That’s what’s fun about working with somebody you’ve worked with for 27 years. 27 seasons together. I sort of know what Kirk is going to say and how he views a game and how he’s wired. We do almost no talking about the gameplans ahead of time. People in the business don’t believe that. We don’t sit around and have a big conversation ‘Hey when TCU has the ball, this, this, and this. Here’s what I expect Georgia to do. If this happens, what are you going to say?’ We don’t do any of that.

“I’m not saying it’s a better way to do it. We just have kind of our method at this point and it’s to be spontaneous.

“That comes from a lot of time spent watching games together. We don’t talk about every game we do, but we watch a lot of football together. Figuring out sort of how each other is wired. If you haven’t figured it out by 27 years, you are not going to.”

Fowler compared the way the two of them work together to how he works with John McEnroe during ESPN’s tennis coverage, where McEnroe does not want to know what Fowler is going to ask him before a big match.

“John McEnroe is like that in tennis. John does not want to know what you are going to ask him in the opening of a Wimbledon championship match. He doesn’t want to go over it, he will not rehearse it, he wants to be surprised and react.

“Kirk’s not quite that, but he likes to sort of not hammer it home in rehearsal. We are a terrible rehearsal team. I like to think we are pretty good when the lights go on, but not because we practice this stuff.”

Chris Fallica Was Surprised By Tribute On College GameDay

One of the most shocking moves in the broadcasting world this college football season was made by Chris Fallica. “The Bear” announced he was leaving ESPN after 27 years. Next season, he will be part of FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff.

Ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, Fallica was a guest on The Steakhouse on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta on Monday. Host Steak Shapiro asked him if he was surprised by the emotional tribute his College GameDay co-horts gave him on his final show.

“Yeah, I was,” Fallica said. “It was pretty much how I felt as well. Anytime you’re with a group of people on a show for 27 years, as I was, it is your family.”

Chris Fallica noted that it was not an easy decision to leave a group you have so much history with. In his time with ESPN, Fallica rose from being a production assistant to essentially becoming Kirk Herbstreit’s right-hand man.

“You’re worried what some of the reaction is gonna be. You truly find out if these people are truly your friends or if they’re like ‘Why are you doing this? You’re part of the show!’ I learned indeed that these people are my friends because they were truly happy for me and emotional to see me go.”

The respect Herbstreit and others on the College GameDay crew have for Fallica was evident in a segment that saw Herbstreit and Lee Corso reunite with long time GameDay host Chris Fowler to say goodbye to “The Bear.”

“I miss those guys and I wish them well tonight, but I am happy with where I am moving forward,” he said.

In addition to college football, Chris Fallica told Shapiro that he will cover horse racing and soccer for FOX as well. That will allow him to do more with his sports betting bona fides than he has been able to on TV in the past.

John Brenkus, Marcellus Wiley Bring Brinx.TV Shows To ReachTV

John Brenkus announced last month that his cult hit Sports Science is set to make a comeback. It just won’t be on ESPN. On Monday, we may have gotten a clue about the show’s future home.

Brinx.TV, a company Brenkus founded and is backed by Marcellus Wiley, has announced a content partnership with Reach TV. Reach TV is a free streaming service that is available largely in hotels and airports.

Reach will carry three shows from Brinx.TV. The first, The NIL House: The Epicenter of All Things NIL, will feature Brenkus and Rob Vaka discussing college football and the business of the sport with a lineup of guests that includes Wiley, Champ Bailey, CJ Anderson, Aaron Murray and more. The other shows included in the deal are Never Shut Up featuring Wiley and BrinxTV Plus, which is described as “a sports variety show.”

“We focus on programming that brings together data, technology and storytelling in an informative, yet entertaining way,” Lynnwood Bibbens, CEO of ReachTV, said in a press release. “John Brenkus is a unicorn who brings this all together in a fiercely engaging way.”

Last year, ReachTV began distributing NFL games for travelers. That included both the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

Gregg Giannotti: Bernie Kosar Losing Browns Radio Job Over Bet ‘Ridiculous’

Yesterday, former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar claimed he was removed from the franchise’s radio crew. Sources revealed Kosar’s removal is due to him publicly declaring he placed a ceremonial $19,000 bet on the Browns to defeat the Steelers when sports betting became legal in Ohio. WFAN morning host Gregg Giannotti thought Kosar’s removal was preposterous.

“I understand how and why there are rules in place for this, however, does Bernie Kosar deserve to lose his job over placing that bet?,” Giannotti questioned. “I don’t believe — where he is in his career — can influence the outcome of a game. And that’s what this is all about, as far as team employees betting. Especially when he’s betting the team to win.

“If you’re telling me that Bernie Kosar bets on the Steelers to beat the Browns and then he goes and Nancy Kerrigan’s Deshaun Watson, now then we’re talking about a different story. But I thought this was too much of a punishment for a guy making a bet on the Browns to win. I thought it was ridiculous.”

The NFL has rules in place to prevent team employees from gambling on league events. Kosar is employed by the Browns as a contributor to its radio show Cleveland Browns Daily and its pregame coverage.

“Just be reasonable here,” Giannotti continued. “At his age, at his job, at this point, isn’t effecting the outcome of Browns/Steelers. It has nothing to do with anything. I understand you want to protect the outcome and the integrity of games. Bernie Kosar making this bet has nothing to do with the integrity of football games.”

Co-host Boomer Esiason then mentioned the Browns being concerned with integrity is questionable after the franchise’s owner — Jimmy Haslam — saw his company Pilot Flying J settled a lawsuit after being accused of defrauding truck drivers out of fuel rebates.

“Poor Bernie Kosar — the greatest quarterback in Browns history — gets bleep-canned for making a legal bet, but let’s now hire this sexual predator to be our quarterback and give him the richest quarterback in NFL history,” Giannotti said.

CBS News Welcomes Shanelle Kaul in ‘First of Its Kind’ Role

Canadian journalist Shanelle Kaul is joining CBS News for a new role that will be featured on a wide variety of the network’s platforms.

CBS News is billing her role as a “first-of-its-kind position”, that will see the veteran journalist contribute to the CBS television network, CBS News Radio, CBS Newspath, as well as special event coverage for CBS News.

At CBS Newspath, the network’s satellite news gathering service, she’ll work alongside Jarred Hill who was recently named a morning correspondent for the service.

Kaul — who will be based in New York — joins CBS after a four-year stint at CP24, the most-watched breaking news channel in Canada. Kaul was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in Toronto. She began her career in Canadian television in 2011.

Kaul’s first day with CBS is Friday, January 13th.

Sources: ESPN Eyeing RGIII or Greg McElroy To Replace Todd Blackledge

Todd Blackledge is headed to what will be his third network. The college football analyst is leaving ESPN to team with Noah Eagle at NBC. The duo will call the network’s newly acquired package of Big Ten games.

As a result, Bristol has a hole to fill in its number 2 college football booth. There has been plenty of speculation about who will partner with Sean McDonough next season. Andrew Marchand of The New York Post reports that the decision will come down to Robert Griffin III or Greg McElroy.

Both former quarterbacks have quickly established themselves as potential stars of college football coverage at ESPN and each one brings a unique pedigree. Griffin won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 while at Baylor. McElroy was under center for Nick Saban’s first national championship-winning team at Alabama.

Dan Orlovsky is also expected to be considered, but Marchand reports that his commitments to Monday Night Football would make it tough to elevate him in the college football hierarchy. This past season, Orlovsky was partnered with Bob Wischusen to call an afternoon game each week on either ESPN or ABC.

McElroy and Griffin are already well-established at the network. McElroy was partnered with Joe Tessitore in calling games this season. RGIII became something of a fan favorite calling games alongside Mark Jones.

A move into the number 2 booth comes with a playoff assignment. McDonough and Blackledge called the Fiesta Bowl semi-final this year between TCU and Michigan.

Marchand writes that it is unclear what sort of advantage McElroy’s SEC background could create. ESPN will take over the entire television slate for the conference in 2024, replacing CBS as the conference’s primary media rights holder for football.

Bernie Kosar Removed From Browns Radio Crew After Placing $19K Bet on Season Finale

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar has been removed as a contributor to the franchise’s radio network.

“I was informed by the Browns that my services are no longer desired or needed,” Kosar tweeted Sunday morning. “I will not be doing todays radio program. I am shocked (and) disappointed.”

On Twitter, Kosar claimed he placed the first legal bet in Ohio. The longtime Brown bet $19,000 on the Browns season finale. Sources told Cleveland.com the bet was the reason for the dismissal. Kosar claimed he would donate any winnings associated with the bet to charity.

The NFL has enacted rules pertaining to employees of league teams betting on games their franchise is participating in, and Kosar broke those league rules.

On Sunday evening, the Browns addressed the situation with a statement.

“Earlier this week we notified Bernie, that per league policy, we were required to remove him from our pregame radio coverage for the season finale after he violated the NFL gambling policy by placing a bet on an NFL game. We understand what Bernie means to this community and our history but as team contracted personnel hired to provide content on our media platforms, his bet was a violation of NFL rules and we must adhere to all NFL policy.”

Kosar has been a longtime contributor to franchise radio program Cleveland Browns Daily, as well as the team’s pregame show. In the past, Kosar has also worked as the television analyst for the team’s preseason contests.

Camille Vasquez Joining NBC News as Legal Analyst

Camille Vasquez has joined NBC News the network’s newest legal analyst.

Vasquez rose to fame in the summer of 2022 as she represented actor Johnny Depp in his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard. Vasquez was part of the legal team the secured a $15 million victory for Depp. Ultimately, the two sides announced a settlement that would see Heard pay Depp $1 million in damages.

Vasquez is a partner in law firm Brown Rudnick’s Litigation and Arbitration Practice Group, as well as a co-chair of the firm’s Brand & Reputation Management group.

The 38-year-old made her debut with the network on Today Monday as she discussed the apprehension of the suspect in the University of Idaho murders.
