Sandra Golden: Drew Butler Is a Broadcasting Star

Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden are back on Atlanta radio and the return of their show has looked a little different. The Steakhouse launched earlier this year on 92.9 The Game and features not only Shapiro and Golden, but a rotating cast of supporting players as well.

With the holidays upon us, plenty of broadcasters are taking time off and those two are no exception. Shapiro started his vacation already. Golden’s begins on Wednesday. She told Rob Tribble, who was in for Shapiro, that he would have a different co-host the next day.

“You will be here with Drew Butler tomorrow,” she said. “The man, the myth the legend.”

Butler was a two-time All-American punter for the University of Georgia and won the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top college punter in 2009. He went on to have a five-year career in the NFL, but according to Sandra Golden, his new career could be even more successful.

“I think he’s a star,” she said. “A broadcasting star, like national level broadcasting star.”

Drew Butler has been getting plenty of on-air reps to build his broadcasting profile. Before the new show launched, Sandra Golden made the decision not to work full-time. That gave Steak Shapiro the opportunity to fill out his cast in different ways.

Butler and recruiting analyst Rusty Mansell are in studio on days that Golden isn’t.

Most of Drew Butler’s media work has come on the digital side. He hosts the Punt & Pass Podcast with ESPN’s Aaron Murray, who was Georgia’s quarterback while Butler punter for the Bulldogs. He has also served as an analyst with Rivals.com.

Pat McAfee Didn’t Like Tone Of Media’s Confrontation With Gio Bernard

A planned fake punt that went awry isn’t the only reason the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, but it certainly did not help. A video of the media questioning Gio Bernard, who did not realize the snap was coming to him on the play has gone viral, with many wondering if media members crossed a line. Pat McAfee tried to explain what he saw and also how players view those moments on his show on Tuesday.

McAfee said it is always an interesting dynamic for players when media are in the locker room. There is no good time to answer questions from the press after a loss.

“Just because we point out something is interesting from a player’s perspective doesn’t mean it should be abolished and eliminated,” he said. “We’re just saying if you step back and zoom out, it is a weird thing. It is a very weird thing.”

This is the first season that the media has had full locker room access since the end of the 2019 season. Pat McAfee wonders if that has changed the way the players think about their relationship with the people covering them.

“A lot of these guys in the NFL got very comfortable, I would assume. They’re used to not media coming into the locker room, because it is a weird thing.”

Giovanni Bernard is widely regarded as a nice guy. McAfee noted that he is a good football player too. There is no reason to think the guy doesn’t know what he is doing out there.

In the video, ESPN’s Jenna Lane and FOX’s Greg Auman can be heard pushing Bernard for answers and objecting to the idea that Bernard has been ignored. Auman even says “what have you done for us to talk to you about all year.”

Bernard eventually stopped and answered the media’s questions about what went wrong on the fake punt, but as Pat McAfee pointed out, he was “seething inside.”

“I’m happy they got the answer,” McAfee said. “I do believe in professional sports you do have to answer for your mistakes, so I do appreciate that they have him answer the question, but the tone, I think, is what has everyone saying ‘That’s a human. That’s a human as well as a professional athlete.’”

Conservative radio and cable news host Mark Levin has taken aim at Drudge Report after the outlet published a headline critical of former President Donald Trump Monday.

In a tweet, Levin bluntly shared his thoughts on the publication, by simple tweeting that its founder, Matt Drudge, is a “propagandist for the police state” before sharing a link to the outlet’s website.

Drudge Report’s lead story Tuesday was a headline from linked to The New York Times that said the release of former President Trump’s tax returns could be on the horizon.

Levin has proven to be one of Trump’s most ardent supporters since he was voted out of office. The longtime radio host also recently signed a contract extension to continue hosting his show Life, Liberty & Levin on Fox News.

95.5 WSB Raises More Than $1 Million For Clark Howard’s Charity

95.5 WSB raised more than $1.1 million during it’s December fundraising efforts for Clark’s Christmas Kid’s, an endeavor started by former station personality Clark Howard.

Howard made in-person appearances at the station studios, as well as local Wal-Mart locations to encourage listeners to make donations that aided the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services. Listeners could shop virtually on ClarksChristmasKids.com, picking out toys to donate, and then donating the funds to make the purchases.

“I so look forward to these children across Georgia in foster care having the joy of Christmas and wonderful gifts to open because our generous listeners opened their hearts and wallets again this year to make it happen,” Howard said.

In total, more than 7,400 children in foster care in the state will receive gifts due to the efforts by the the station, sister station WSBB, and Howard.

“No child should ever have a Christmas without presents. Because of Clark’s Christmas Kids, Clark’s personal commitment to this program and the generosity of our listeners, thousands of children in foster care will have a very special holiday,” said WSB Director of Branding and Programming Ken Charles. “I am so proud that 95.5 WSB is partnered with this amazing program.” 

Bob Rathbun Returns To Hawks TV Crew

It was a scary scene earlier this month as Bob Rathbun suffered a medical emergency live on air ahead of an Atlanta Hawks’ home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Plenty of his Bally Sports South colleagues revealed that the play-by-play man was suffering from dehydration and was doing well when he arrived at the hospital.

Mike Morgan had been filling in for the last two weeks on the television broadcast.

Monday night, Rathbun was back on TV for the first time since the incident. He called the action between the Hawks and the Orlando Magic.

“Thank you doesn’t seem adequate enough,” Rathbun said after being introduced by the studio team. “The outpouring of love and affection, the prayers, the well-wishes were overwhelming and I can’t thank you all enough.”

He introduced a group behind him that included two of the EMTs that responded to his incident as well as Hawks co-owner Jami Gertz, who he called his “favorite nurse.”

“You know, it was quite a scare for me,” said Domonique Wilkins, who serves as the analyst alongside Bob Rathbun. “And to see how far you’ve come in a short period of time is very important to all of us. So, partner, happy to have you back. We all love you and we can get back to business.”

FOX Sports Sees World Cup Final Ratings Record

The 2022 World Cup Final will go down as one of the most exciting matches in World Cup history. It will also go down in history for FOX Sports.

The match featuring Argentina and France is the most-watched World Cup Final in U.S. television history. According to the network, over 16.7 million viewers tuned into the conclusion of the tournament.

According to the network, the previous high for a World Cup Final was in 1994 when Brazil defeated Italy before a television audience of over 14.5 million.

The broadcast is now the most-watched World Cup match in English-language history in the country, defeating the record set earlier in this year’s tournament between the United States and England in the Group Stage.

It’s the latest ratings victory for the network during the world’s premiere soccer event. Several games hit highs for FOX Sports, with the network claiming Americans would spend more time watching the World Cup than they would watching March Madness.

Pat Foley Calling Winter Classic for Sports USA

Sports USA has announced Hockey Hall of Fame announcer Pat Foley will join the network to serve as the play-by-play announcer for the 2023 Winter Classic.

The New Year’s Day game features the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park at 1:30 PM ET.

“The opportunity to join Sports USA and debut at a marquee event in a spectacular setting is very exciting,” Foley said. “I’m looking forward to sitting next to Nick Olczyk, who is a terrific analyst. I cut my teeth in radio and keeping up with the fastest game in the world is always a challenge, but one that I’m very much looking forward to.”

Foley worked as the voice of the Chicago Blackhawks for 39 years — primarily on television — before retiring earlier this year. He’ll work the game with the aforementioned Olczyk, who currently works as an analyst for the Seattle Kraken. Billy Jaffe will serve as the network’s rinkside reporter.

“I’ve always loved Pat’s work with the Blackhawks. When he retired after last season, I, like so many of his fans, felt a profound sense of sadness,” said Sports USA founder Larry Kahn. He is unquestionably a legend in the broadcast industry, and having him come out of retirement for an event like the Winter Classic is a great way to start off the new year for Sports USA and all hockey fans.”

Over the weekend, Twitter owner Elon Musk released a poll asking whether he should step aside as the social media platform’s CEO or not. Users voted that yes, Musk should turn over the operations to someone else. 98.9 The Answer host Bruce Hooley has questioned whether that was Musk’s plan all along.

“I would have thought he would have won that poll with a resounding (no), but the leftist martialed their forces and the results came back 57% (yes) and 42% (no),” Hooley said. “There are two schools of thought on this: Is Elon Musk really allowing the inmates to run the asylum? The people who use Twitter to decide whether he gets to stay on as CEO.

“Or did Elon Musk already determine that he would step away from Twitter, return to Tesla, return to SpaceX, (and) stabilize the stock price because he has someone else in mind to be the CEO of Twitter. I gotta assume a brilliant guy like Elon Musk does not allow people who use Twitter — I can’t believe he’d put that out as a poll if he had not already prepared for the worst eventuality of the poll.”

Hooley continued by asking if Musk planned to install someone as Twitter’s new CEO that “would drive the left even crazier” than himself. The radio host then said he hopes Musk hasn’t “lost the stomach” for defending free speech after criticism levied against him since purchasing the platform.

Elon Musk ‘Actively Looking’ For New Twitter CEO

A report from CNBC claims Twitter owner Elon Musk is “actively looking” for a new CEO of the social media platform.

Musk conducted a poll over the week asking users to vote on whether he should remove himself as the CEO of Twitter. The final totals saw over 57% of respondents voting yes on the matter. In the initial tweet, Musk said he would “abide by the results” of the poll.

The billionaire then insinuated the poll was a muse intended to catch bots on the platform. He then agreed with a user who said Twitter Blue subscribers — those who pay the platform $8 or $11 per month — should be the ones allowed to vote on policy changes going forward. “Twitter will make that change,” he said.

The Tesla and SpaceX owner has come under fire in recent weeks for his conduct surrounding the platform. Several prominent journalists saw their accounts suspended or were permanently banned after Musk accused them of “doxxing” him. He claimed a “stalker” approached a car — eventually jumping on its hood — carrying his family members. He placed the blame on the journalists he claimed provided his real-time location. A report from The Washington Post revealed the “stalker” was actually following Musk’s ex-wife — recording artist Grimes — and is an Uber Eats driver.

Evan Roberts: I Knew Wayne Randazzo Would Leave Mets After AppleTV+ Gig

Reports surfaced yesterday that New York Mets radio announcer Wayne Randazzo would depart the team to join the Los Angeles Angels as a member of its television crew. Evan Roberts of WFAN’s Carton & Roberts was not surprised Randazzo was moving on.

Randazzo stepped into a fill-in role at AppleTV+ during the baseball season, and Roberts said he was aware that the radio voice would be exiting the team’s radio booth during that assignment.

“You know when it was over? I don’t know if you realize this,” Roberts said. “There was an AppleTV+ game, the Friday night package. The guy who was broadcasting got sick, probably a COVID thing. It was a Met game, so they called Wayne in at the last second to do the AppleTV+ game. He did a really good job. He’s a solid broadcaster. As soon as he filled in I said ‘It’s over. He’s gonna be a TV guy. Done.’

“He was good on TV and you just knew — whether it’s AppleTV+ or it’s another team — he’s getting a TV gig. As much as I love radio play-by-play — and to me it’s more important — I’ll be honest with you, I care a hell of a lot more about Howie Rose and John Sterling than I do Gary Cohen and Michael Kay. It’s not a knock on them. I’ll say this about Gary, Gary was one of the greatest radio play-by-play voices of all time. Radio announcer — to me — is a bigger deal, but the TV guys gets paid more. The TV gig is more prestigious for some reason, so you knew the first chance at a TV gig, Wayne was gone.”

Randazzo’s move to the Angels puts in question the future of Matt Vasgersian with the club. Vasgersian has served as the team’s primary television voice for the past two seasons, working the majority of the 2022 season from a remote studio. He has previously worked national broadcasts for ESPN, FOX, and MLB Network.
