Megyn Kelly: Media Calls Me ‘Conservative’ When I’m Not

0

SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly has decried the use of “conservative” as a smear tactic used by media members, after The Washington Post called Matt Taibbi and Bari Weiss “conservative journalists” after their roles in releasing the “Twitter Files”.

During her show Wednesday, Kelly claimed he isn’t a conservative or a Republican, and lamented that he continues to be labeled with those monikers.

ā€œThese are not conservatives. I know a lot of conservatives, these are not two of them,ā€ Kelly said. ā€œThey do this to me too. Every article that quotes me or has a segment of mine — ā€˜Conservative podcaster, Megyn Kelly,’ I’m not a conservative, I’m not even a Republican. I don’t know what I am. I’m not political. I’m independent and I have strong viewpoints on various things, but they don’t all run conservative.”

Kelly continued by noting The New York Times called her a conservative in a story on her opinions of the Paul Pelosi attack.

“You can see my voting records for the past 20 years. I’m a registered Independent, I have been for two decades. Do your homework.’ It’s a way of smearing you. And I don’t consider it a negative, I just don’t consider it true.”

Barstool Sports Fined After Tailgate Show in Toledo

0

Barstool Sports has been fined “not less than $250,000” by the Ohio Casino Control Commission after violations of state law during an appearance at the University of Toledo.

According to a report from the Toledo Blade, Barstool was given notice of the violation after the OCCC claimed it was in violation of two statutes: targeting or advertising gambling to those under the age of 21, and avertising on or near a college campus.

The company hosted its Barstool Tailgate Show on Tuesday, November 15th ahead of the University of Toledo’s game against Bowling Green.

OCCC spokesperson Jessica Franks told the Blade Barstool was ā€œencouraging folks to preregister; they were advertising the Sportsbookā€.

Sports betting is not legal in the state of Ohio until January 1st.

A spokesperson for Penn Entertainment — Barstool’s parent company — said it looks “forward to the opportunity to address this directly with the Ohio Casino Control Commission through its regulatory process”.

Franks added that while the Commission takes gambling in Ohio seriously, it simply looks for “egregious violations”.

ā€œWe do take responsible gambling very serious here at the commission, especially the fact that sports gaming hasn’t even officially launched,ā€ Franks said. ā€œWe do take this very seriously, (but) we do not actively seek out to fine or sanction companies.ā€

Penn Entertainment has 30 days to take action, which could include requesting a hearing or seeking a settlement.

Barrett News Media’s Top 20 Major Market News/Talk Afternoon Shows of 2022

0

We’ve made it to day 4 of BNM’s Top 20 of 2022 series presented by Steve Stone Voiceovers. If you’re checking in here for the first time and missed this week’s prior announcements, check out who made our lists among the News/Talk radio format’s top National Shows, Major  and Mid Market Morning Shows, and Major and Mid Market midday shows. The results are collectively determined by 44 radio industry programmers and executives from 15 companies in 36 cities. Their participation is greatly appreciated.

After today, we will still have three days left to go. Still to be presented are the format’s top program directors, radio stations, and original digital shows. We were going to keep it simple and just say ‘Digital Shows’ but we wanted to make sure it’s understood that the programs listed in the category were built specifically for digital, not radio programs that get turned into repurposed digital content.

As a format, News/Talk radio programming is available on over two thousand stations. The only larger format is country. We try our best to make sure the top shows, hosts, programmers and brands are listed for voting consideration but also allow room for our voters to add nominees if for some reason someone isn’t listed on our document. Additionally, though we triple check everything before publishing our lists and hope to present the perfect layout, sometimes things slip through the cracks. If you notice an error, please let us know. We want to shine the light on the format’s best brands and shows in a way that makes them feel proud to be recognized, not frustrated by an incorrect detail.

As you review these results, please keep in mind that they represent the collective opinions of forty four industry programmers and executives. If your show didn’t make the list, it doesn’t mean you’re no good, not successful or critically important to your employer. In other words, don’t beat yourself up over it. Though it’s cool to be recognized, there are way more good shows out there than there are slots.

If you wish to stay informed on each day’s results, it’d help us out if you’d give us a follow on Twitter at @BNMStaff, visit us on Facebook at Barrett News Media or sign up for our daily newsletter, ā€˜The Rundownā€˜ by clicking here. You can also bookmark this website to stay updated on future news/media industry content. Your support is greatly appreciated.

As it pertains to the voting, here are a few key things to be aware of.

#1 – Our voters were asked to pick their Top 20 selections for each category in exact order based on a few key factors; quality of show (ear test), originality, ability to entertain-inform-connect across multiple platforms, ratings success, clearance (national shows) and industry buzz. Remember, our voters live in different cities, have different tastes, work for different groups, and value certain factors higher than others. This isn’t a perfect system but it’s the best one we’ve been able to create to showcase the industry’s best. Having done this for seven years for the sports talk format, we’re going to stick with it until another approach makes more sense.

#2 – Our executive panel consists of program directors and corporate executives from a number of top broadcasting companies including Audacy, iHeart, Cumulus, Beasley, Hubbard, Good Karma Brands, Cox Media Group, Radio One, Alpha, Bonneville, FOX News Radio, Hearst, Federated Media, Zimmer Communications, and Westwood One. We involve a large number of people in order to receive feedback from all parts of the country, and to avoid the results heavily favoring one company.

#3 – A total of 35 shows in the Major Market N/T Afternoon Shows category appeared on ballots turned in by our executive panel.

Which brings us to today’s category – Major Market News/Talk Afternoon Shows. For the third time in three days, KFI in Los Angeles reigned supreme. This time, the station’s afternoon show John and Ken earned the top spot recognition. BNM congratulates John, Ken, Robin Bertolucci and the entire KFI team on being voted #1, and every other show which earned a spot on this year’s list.

Now, here are the full results of ā€œBNM’s Top 20 Major Market News/Talk Afternoon Shows of 2022!ā€

Additional Notes:

  • John and Ken cruised to a 78 point victory in the afternoon category. The KFI drive time tandem were also the recipient of the most first place votes among all shows with nine (9).
  • Coming in 21-25 were Michelle Durham & Jay Scott Smith, Slater & Lou, The PM Rush, Russell & Hunter, and Michael Wallace & Steve Scott.
  • The closest contests saw Vince Coglianese finish 3 points in front of Charles Feldman, and Carl Demaio finish 1 point ahead of Leo Terrell.
  • Of the 35 shows to receive votes, seven (7) received at least one 1st place vote.

Here is the remaining schedule for the BNM Top 20 of 2022.

  • Thursday December 15 = The Top 20 Major/Mid Market N/T Radio Afternoon Shows of 2022
  • Friday December 16 = The Top 20 Major/Mid Market N/T Radio Program Directors of 2022
  • Monday December 19 = The Top 20 Major/Mid Market N/T Radio Stations of 2022
  • Tuesday December 20 = The Top 20 Original N/T Digital Shows of 2022

We were going to keep the last category simple and call it ‘Digital Shows’ but we want to make sure it’s understood that the programs listed in the category are specifically created for podcast/video/OTT, not repurposed radio programs, so that’s why the word ‘original’ is added to the category title.

As a format, News/Talk radio programming is available on over two thousand stations. The only larger format is country. #3 – A total of 52 shows in the Mid Market N/T Afternoon Shows category appeared on ballots turned in by our executive panel.

Which brings us to today’s category – Mid Market News/Talk Afternoon Shows. For the first time this week, WLW in Cincinnati did not grab the top spot in a mid market category. That’s because our voting panel placed their support behind WIBC’s Hammer and Nigel. The Indianapolis duo won a tight race against Charlotte’s Brent Winterble to secure the top spot. BNM congratulates Jason Hammer, Nigel Laskowski, David Wood and the entire WIBC team on being voted #1, as well as every other show which earned a spot on this year’s list.

Now, here are the full results of ā€œBNM’s Top 20 Mid Market News/Talk Afternoon Shows of 2022!ā€

Additional Notes:

  • Hammer & Nigel won this category by 11 points over Brett Winterble. The Indianapolis drive time show and Winterble’s Charlotte program were tied for the most first place votes among all shows with four (4).
  • Coming in 21-25 were Jack Riccardi, Afternoon News with Jeff Caplan, Terry Meiners, Mark Blazor, and Bob Lonsberry.
  • The closest contest was for spots 2-4. Brett Winterble finished 2 points ahead of Jeff Katz, who was 2 points in front of Dana and Parks. Rod Arquette also held on to 20th place over Jack Riccardi by 2 points.

WFMD Radio Annual Fundraiser Benefits Maryland Children

0

WFMD Radio in Frederick raised $145,126 during its annual fundraiser Christmas Cash for Kids. Working in conjunction with the Salvation Army of Frederick, MD, the program has helped to raise more $2.5 million in 22 years.

ā€œEvery year we are amazed by the outpouring of generosity of the people who make it a point to be a blessing to the families of Frederick in need,ā€ said WFMD host Bob Miller. ā€œWe have been blessed by people who take time from their busy lives to pull it all together.ā€ Ā

Christmas Cash for Kids has been a holiday tradition in Frederick County. It has evolved into the largest single provider of children’s toys, and clothing for those who would otherwise not have a Christmas

In 2000, Christmas Cash for Kids moved from the Z-104 WWVZ to 930 WFMD.Ā Ā Without Christmas Cash for Kids, hundreds of parents in Frederick County would not be able to provide a Christmas for their children

ā€œConnoisseur Media is proud to continue this long-standing tradition in partnership with the Salvation Army, our staff, partners, volunteers, and sponsors,ā€ WFMD General Manager Mike Banks said. ā€œOf course, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors in Frederick and the surrounding counties. Christmas Cash for Kids has become a passion project for us all.ā€

Ben Shapiro: Twitter CEO Musk Moving Fast, Breaking Things

0

Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro said Twitter is moving into a new phase under Elon Musk. On his nationally syndicated show Wednesday, Shapiro lauded Musk for recent changes including disbanding Twitter’s legal department.

ā€œThe Trust and Safety Council was this Orwellian body that decided who could stay and who could not stay on the basis of vague, undefined standards,ā€ said Shapiro.

Last week, The New York Post reported that Elon Musk fired Twitter’s deputy general counsel, James Baker, over his alleged suppression of internal documents about blocking The Post’s Hunter Biden laptop.

ā€œMusk is moving fast and breaking things,ā€ said Shapiro. ā€œHe has fired 80 percent of Twitter’s employee base, which dramatically lowers their cost, the traffic and engagement on Twitter is way up. It should be, you’re not getting the curated views, instead you’re openly allowed to express your views.ā€

Shapiro said the main difference between the Elon Musk-led Twitter and the former administration is accountability.

ā€œIf Musk decides to ban Ye, a decision I don’t agree with even though he is a raging antisemite and a mentally ill person, then he takes the hit for that. Which is the way it’s supposed to work. The head of the company is always where the buck stops.ā€

ā€œWhen Jack Dorsey was running the place he was off vacationing and meanwhile his middle management Yoel Roth and Vijaya Gadde were deciding who would get banned and then blame it on the algorithms,ā€ he added.

Erick Erickson Applauds Bill Melugin’s Work Covering Border Crisis

0

Syndicated radio personality Erick Erickson credited Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin with his frontline work, reporting on the crisis at the U.S. Southern border.

Erickson’s comments were made during his show Wednesday. Erickson criticized other mainstream media outlets for ignoring the story until after the election.

ā€œFox News’ Bill Melugin has been the only guy for quite some time to worry about, think about, ponder the border,ā€ said Erickson. ā€œHe’s been in South Texas, the guy is from California, the Biden administration is so furious with his coverage that they’re attacking him as Abercrombie boy.ā€

According to Fox News, Melugin joined the network in 2021. Prior to joining FNC, Melugin served as an investigative reporter for KTTV-TV Los Angeles where he was awarded three local Emmy awards for investigative reporting within a four-year span.

ā€œMelugin worked at Abercrombie and Fitch, he was a model and then he got into reporting,ā€ said Erickson. ā€œThe Biden administration is trying to use that against him and say he’s not a smart guy, but he is a very smart guy. He’s been covering the border and the Democrats are furious about it.ā€

Erickson stated that Melugin’s reporting coupled with the drone that he’s using shows the mass humanitarian crisis at the southern border.Ā

ā€œNo one else has covered the border,ā€ Erickson added. ā€œThe reason the mainstream media didn’t cover the border was the election.ā€

Clay Travis: NY Times, WaPost Are ‘Utterly Dependent’ Subscription Model

0

The Washington Post will reportedly become the latest media outlet to conduct mass layoffs as its digital subscriber base plummets. Syndicated radio hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton reacted to the newsĀ WednesdayĀ after Travis tweeted a video of a contentious town hall at Washington Post headquarters.

Travis said the Post has lost a whopping 500,000 digital subscribers since President Joe Biden took office.

ā€œThe Washington Post and the New York Times have become so utterly dependent on their subscription business,ā€ said Travis. ā€œThis is a big part of why their coverage is so left-wing and biased because their subscribers are so left-wing and biased.ā€

Travis reported that the Washington Post had an ā€œall hands on deckā€ meeting Wednesday and it was announced at that meeting that mass firings will occur in the first quarter of 2023.

ā€œAll those Washington Post reporters that have been looking down their nose at you and telling you what an awful human being you are because you voted for Donald Trump are suddenly realizing that they work for a for-profit newspaper and that newspaper is in trouble because Trump isn’t in office,ā€ said Travis.

Travis said that many mainstream media outlets are going to have to reconcile with the question of how to cover Donald Trump’s bid for another presidency.

ā€œTrump derangement syndrome was a sugar high of sorts,ā€ Sexton said. ā€œBecause they were able to get their base all fired up and riled up about how Trump was worse than Hitler and working with Putin and stole the election. CNN had garbage shows and moron hosts that did very well in the Trump era.

ā€œPropaganda in support of the regime of Joe Biden is boring,ā€ he added.

Anatomy of An Analyst: Greg Olsen

His style is unique, he sometimes looks disheveled, unshaven and scruffy. But Greg Olsen could probably care less, because he’s ascended to the top of his field at Fox. The former NFL Tight End, is spending his first season in the #1 booth with Kevin Burkhardt. While he may indeed look like Dexter’s older brother (Showtime’s drama about a serial killer), Olsen is killing it with his on-the-spot analysis. Sorry, had to go there.

Growing up in New Jersey, he never really thought about the guys calling the games. On the Dave Pasch Podcast earlier this year, Olsen explained his perspective as a kid.

ā€œUntil I started doing it, I don’t even really know if I ever paid attention to broadcasters,ā€ he told Pasch. ā€œYou know, I knew who Monday Night Football announcers were as a kid. Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford and Al Michaels. You remember listening to games with John Madden. I remember them, I can’t say I ever tuned into a game wondering ā€˜Hey I wonder who is calling the game?’ It was always kind of secondary to me.ā€

That all changed when he started to get more serious about life after football.

ā€œIt really wasn’t until later into my career and I’d been on that other side of the camera and sat in those booths and called it, where I would watch games and almost watch it more to hear what they were saying and more to see the replay sequence and more to see how the analyst used the telestrator and what points he made. And what I found interesting and what I found boring.ā€

NFL CAREER

Olsen was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 31st overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami. He spent four seasons with the Bears before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2011. As a Bears’ fan, I still don’t understand that deal.

Anyway, he remained with the Panthers through the conclusion of the 2019 season, and played a key role in the Panthers’ Super Bowl 50 berth against the Denver Broncos. Olsen became one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

He was a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time second-team All-Pro selection. He ranks fifth all-time among tight ends with 742 receptions and 8,683 yards. From 2014 to 2016, he recorded 1,000 receiving yards each season. In the process Olsen became the first tight end in history to record three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He left the Panthers as the franchise’s all-time leading tight end in receiving yards (6,463), receptions (524) and 100-yard receiving games (10). Olsen sits second among Panthers tight ends in receiving touchdowns at 39 and third in receiving yards and receptions.

From Carolina it was on to Seattle. In 2020, he signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks. It was not as productive a year as he’d become accustomed to. Olsen was released by the Seahawks in March of 2021. He announced his retirement from the NFL that same year.

ROAD TO FOX

Olsen’s road to the number one booth actually started while still an active player. In 2017, while playing for the Panthers, Olsen became just the third player in FOX Sports’ history to serve as game analyst (Matt Hasselbeck and Marcus Allen were the first two). Olsen joined Kevin Burkhardt, Charles Davis and Pam Oliver to call a Week 11 game between the Vikings and Rams.

He also jumped into the booth in 2019, his last season with the Panthers. He partnered with Kenny Albert and reporter Lindsay Czarniak for the Week 7 NFL matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Giants.

In early 2020, during the offseason before his final season with the Seahawks, Olsen also partnered with Burkhardt to call five XFL games for FOX Sports and served as an NFL studio analyst for the network’s coverage of Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

His full-time broadcasting career started in 2021. Olsen joined FOX last season as the network’s color analyst in the No. 2 booth, working next to Burkhardt. When Troy Aikman and Joe Buck left Fox for the Monday Night Football booth at ESPN, Olsen and Burkhardt were promoted to the top booth on Fox before this season.

ā€œWe’re thrilled to have this team steward our industry leading and award-winning coverage as we embark on our 29th NFL season, highlighted by our 10th Super Bowl,ā€ said Brad Zager, Fox Sports president of production/operations and executive producer. ā€œLast season, Kevin and Greg showed viewers their undeniable chemistry and ability to call football at an elite level. We can’t wait for fans to see what they’re going to bring to ā€˜America’s Game of the Week,’ the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl LVII.ā€

The promotion may be short lived, because Fox has also committed itself to Tom Brady, if/when the quarterback decides to really retire from football. Olsen was well aware of the situation he was getting himself into. He decided that he couldn’t worry about what might come next year, this season was too important for his new found career. So much so, that, as Olsen has playfully tried to talk Brady out of television.

During his first Fox production meeting with Brady, Olsen decided to ā€˜break the ice’ with some humor. Burkhardt was in the room as well and related the story to the Sports Illustrated Media podcast.

ā€œTom, I gotta tell ya, this TV thing sucks,ā€ he joked. Brady cracked up according to Burkhardt.

Olsen admitted the story was true. Nobody is quite sure how things will go next year if Brady is available, but it’s good to see that Olsen is handling the ā€˜elephant in the room’ with class.

AS AN ANALYST

Olsen reached out to many analysts that were already in the business before he got into television full time. One of the things I admire about him, is he’s hell bent on being himself and not trying to imitate others. It would be easy for someone in his position to say, ā€œI’m going to sound like Tony Romo, because he’s having success.ā€ Thankfully Olsen is his own man and brings his own style and flare to the broadcast.

ā€œI’ve been fortunate to have some good guidance and have some cool conversations. But as far as style, I don’t try to be anyone,ā€ said Olsen to the Dave Pasch Podcast. ā€œThere’s not anyone where I say, oh, I want to sound like him. I just kind of talk like me and say things that I think are interesting and try to point out elements of the game that I find fun. It might not be for everyone. Some people might not like my style. They might not like the way I describe things. But I think it’s fun. I think it’s interesting. I think, our broadcast, you come away learning the game of football. I like that. I want that to be what people are tuning in for.ā€

The fact that he’s raw and not that far removed from his playing days works in his favor. Sometimes the more polished you try to sound, the worse it is. People aren’t tuning in to hear the analyst sound like he’s reading from a script. They want to hear, honest and in the moment thoughts from someone that played the game at a high level. He knows the game and most importantly, knows how to relate the things he’s seeing to his audience. You can also hear the enjoyment he’s getting, just talking about the game he loves. It’s like youthful exuberance shining through. Ā

ā€œI think the game is so fun and so interesting and complex and the better we can do as analysts in portraying that, I think it’s fun for the viewer to come away and learn a few things throughout the course of the game.ā€ Olsen said on the Pasch Podcast.

He’s learning the television game as he goes along here. I’m sure it’s almost like being a rookie in the NFL again. Learning, progressing, evolving and succeeding. The process hasn’t taken him very long. Of course, it helps to have a talented play-by-play announcer sitting next to him, and the duo of Burkhardt and Olsen works, and works well. It would be a shame to lose a guy that’s coming into his own, like Olsen, for a guy like Brady. Nobody really knows what Brady will sound like, how analytical, or how entertaining he’ll be. Me personally, I’d be weary. It’s a big name yes, but that doesn’t always translate into someone being a good analyst. Brady has always been the ā€˜buttoned up’ sound bite, never really saying anything. Fox could be taking a gamble on replacing a sure thing with a less than sure thing.

If I’m running the network, the ā€œAā€ team at Fox becomes a three-man booth. Olsen has really gelled with Burkhardt and it would be nice, I’m sure, for Brady to have a fellow former player in the booth with him.

DID YOU KNOW?

Olsen twice was named a finalist for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Inspired by the challenges facing his son, T.J., who was born with a severe congenital heart defect, Olsen and his wife, Kara, founded the HEARTest Yard Program to offer support and services to those facing similar circumstances.
