Dan McLaughlin Out as St. Louis Cardinals Announcer

St. Louis Cardinals television play-by-play voice Dan McLaughlin will not return to the club in 2023.

The news was announced Thursday as a “mutual decision” by Bally Sports Midwest, McLaughlin, and the franchise.

“Dan McLaughlin will not return as the Cardinals television play-by-play announcer on Bally Sports Midwest,” the team and telecaster said in a joint statement. “Dan has been the voice of memorable Cardinals moments for 24 years. We thank him for his contributions to Cardinals baseball, to Cardinals fans, and for his many charitable efforts.”

The 48-year-old was charged with his third DWI earlier this month. According to police, concerned drivers called law enforcement officials about a white BMW driving erratically. One caller added it was driving into oncoming traffic. McLaughlin was booked on December 6th. He had previously been charged with the crime twice in a 13 month span in 2010 and 2011.

In his own statement, the longtime Cardinals voice thanked those he worked with while adding it was time to focus on himself.

“I have spent the last several days reflecting on my steps towards addressing my health and the well-being of my family and me,” he said. “I have come to the conclusion that my sole focus needs to be on my recovery, which I have started, and that of my wife and (four) children.

“As a result, I am stepping away from my duties at Bally Sports Midwest,” he added. “I thank all of the people of Bally for their support throughout the years and wish them the best. As I move forward, I please ask for your patience and your privacy. Thank you. God Bless.”

McLaughlin had already been suspended by Bally Sports Midwest from his duties announcing St. Louis University men’s basketball games shown on the network after his December 6th arrest.

Rich Zeoli: Joy Reid Is ‘Most Racist Person on Television’

There continues to be differing opinions on both sides of the political aisle about the actions new Twitter owner Elon Musk has taken with the social media platform. MSNBC host Joy Reid appears on one side of the spectrum, while 1210 WPHT afternoon host Rich Zeoli appears on the exact opposite end.

After saying conservatives don’t hate anyone and just want to be left alone to live their lives, the host singled out one network that he believes is hateful.

“I’ll tell you one of the most hateful places: MSNBC, and Joy Reid in particular,” Zeoli said. “If you want to watch a hateful show, watch Joy Reid. She is probably — no, she is — the most racist person on television. And she brings on her racist friends. So her marry band of racist friends come on there and they all do the same thing. She — at one time — talked about the tears of white people, some weird thing. She’s a very bitter person, but MSNBC keeps her on there because — I guess — Comcast and NBC like the hate that she spews.

“And yet, she really hates the idea that Twitter is becoming a free platform. So she is going on the same line that we are radicalizing everyone and the free flow of unbridled hate speech is everywhere that we look.”

After playing a clip of Reid saying Twitter has become a destination for hate speech, homophobia, transphobia, and racism under the direction of Trump, Zeoli posited her reasoning was to create cause for government censorship of the platform.

Angelo Cataldi Takes Issue With WIP Hosts Not Defending Jalen Hurts

During an appearance on Von Miller’s podcast earlier this week, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons argued that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had benefited from his surrounding talent. Many have argued on whether it was a shot at Hurts or not, with 94WIP morning host Angelo Cataldi certain it was, and he was angry with his co-workers for not defending the city’s quarterback.

“I hereby declare war on many of the people associated with this radio station, including the people that are replacing us,” Cataldi said. “I was well aware of the comments made by Micah Parsons, a great player but by all appearances is a freaking dumbbell. I don’t know if Penn State gave him a diploma, but they should ask for it back…then Jon Ritchie and Joe DeCamara, apparently stupid can be contagious.”

Cataldi then played the comments made by Parsons that claimed Hurts is helped by the Eagles roster and he isn’t the MVP of the league.

“All of this is well and good. I’m driving in and Johnson is doing one of those serenity now things, except there was nothing serene about it. He was upset, and he wasn’t naming names. So I went ‘Wait a minute’. There are people at WIP saying nothing. He referenced a tweet by our good friend and former Inquirer journalist Glen Macnow who said ‘Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think he disrespected him’. Glen, you may need to do what I just did and get your hearing checked out, ’cause I ended up getting hearing aids. But I don’t know what he’s thinking.”

“James Seltzer — who is the producer of the midday show — is gonna be part of the new show here comes on this show and sullies it with a bad comment when they were asking for his response.”

After playing the clip of Seltzer saying he didn’t think the comments were disrespectful, Cataldi continued his onslaught against his co-workers.

“Terrible!,” he shouted. “If I was here, they would have had to separate us. There would have been fisticuffs,” Cataldi joked. “It would have gotten physical.”

He then added he was relying on DeCamara and Ritchie to set Seltzer straight, but was let down after the pair argued that Parsons was being respectful rather than critical of Hurts.

“Is that a dumb take? Is that dumb take from Jon Ritchie?,” the legendary morning host reiterated. “It’s a dumb take!”

He then complimented Ike Reese for his take on the situation. The former Eagle was adamant it was a slight and intended to be disrespectful.

Cataldi concluded by jokingly demanding an apology from Seltzer, DeCamara, and Ritchie, shouting “This is war!”

Dan Patrick: I Hope There Is Posthumous US Soccer Honor For Grant Wahl

The death of influential American soccer journalist Grant Wahl is a subject both fans and media members are still talking about. Thursday morning on The Dan Patrick Show, NBC Sports’s Peter King shared a story about going to South Africa to cover the World Cup in 2010 and Wahl taking care to introduce the football scribe to influential coaches and journalists from the soccer world.

“Some people might say, ‘well geez, Grant’s giving you time with people who he cultivated and who he wanted to be able to work with,’” King told Patrick. “I always thought the reason he did that is not only for total unselfishness and class, but because he wanted to see the game grow in the United States. That’s why he’s introducing me to everybody. He wants me to write about it to a non-soccer crowd.”

Dan Patrick agreed that Grant Wahl was a major influence on the lives of sports fans across the country, particularly as the popularity of soccer and the US Men’s and Women’s National Teams grew. He added that there is a section of fans that don’t care for soccer that still own Wahl a debt of gratitude for being the first journalist to write a profile of LeBron James for a national publication when James was still a high schooler in Akron.

“I hope there’s some posthumous honor for him that his wife can share in, that his widow can share in, that’s soccer related.”

Earlier this week, Wahl’s wife Céline Gounder revealed that none of the conspiracy theories surrounding her husband’s death held water. Grant Wahl “died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium.” She added that CPR or defribilator paddles could not have saved him.

King added that it was hard not to take note of the emotional reactions of past and present members of the US Men’s and Women’s National Teams when they talked about Wahl over the weekend. He does not think it is something US Soccer will ignore.

“I’m sure that US Soccer’s gonna do something. I’m sure they’re gonna do something. I hope a lot of people do something, because his is a memory that we should cherish.”

Dave Rothenberg Has No Problem Debating Don La Greca Face To Face

On Wednesday’s edition of The Michael Kay Show, Don La Greca called out fellow ESPN New York host Dave Rothenberg. La Greca said the morning man regularly makes content out of disagreeing with clips from the afternoon show.

La Greca said he doesn’t mind the disagreement, but he wants the protocol to change. He challenged Dave Rothenberg to tell The Michael Kay Show crew that their opinions are wrong to their faces instead of doing it on his show without La Greca, Kay, or Peter Rosenberg in the room. La Greca said he would be happy to be on with DiPietro and Rothenberg or Dave could come on the afternoon show.

“I am willing to do a weekly on their show if Dave will do a weekly on our show,” La Greca said Wednesday. “We can hash out our issues, because it seems like there are two or three things every week that he’s got a problem with.”

Thursday morning on DiPietro and Rothenberg, producer RJ Santillo played audio of the challenge. Rothenberg said he would accept the challenge, but not for free.

“Get this baby sponsored,” he said. “I lay down the gauntlet not only to Don and Peter, but to sales as well. Get it sponsored and I’ll go on their show.”

The show debated whether or not it could count on the sales department to actually get the segments sponsored. Rick DiPietro predicted that not only would it not get sponsored, but if it did, that Dave Rothernberg would dread having to hold up to his end of the deal.

Wall Street Journal Names Emma Tucker New Editor in Chief

The Wall Street Journal has tabbed Emma Tucker as its new top editor, becoming the first female editor in the history of the storied publication.

Tucker, 56, has served as the editor of The Sunday Times in London. The Times, like The Wall Street Journal, is owned by Rupert Murdoch-controlled News Corp. She will step into the role previously held by Matt Murray, who oversaw the digital growth of the brand during his tenure.

Tucker will begin her new role at February 1st, working with Murray during a transitional phase until March 1st.

According to a report from The New York Times, Murray and News Corp. executives clashed at times over the editorial direction of the outlet. In the report, Murray’s skepticism of the Hunter Biden laptop story was a sticking point of the two parties, which News Corp outlet The New York Post reported on heavily. Murdoch also reportedly raised concerns about the Journal’s objectivity after coverage of the murder of George Floyd.

“She will take over at a time of unprecedented volatility in the world on virtually every front — a time for The Journal to continue to double down on our core and on our unique role in society: delivering in-depth, insightful coverage of the business world and beyond,” The Wall Street Journal Publisher Almar Latour told employees in a memo announcing the move.

Roger Goodell: Sunday Ticket Negotiations ‘Not On a Timeline’

Before the NFL season began, it was a forgone conclusion that NFL Sunday Ticket would be making its home on Apple TV+ at the beginning of the 2023 season. That, however, is far from a sure thing.

Sunday Ticket has been an exclusive product for DirecTV since its debut in 1994. While there is no firm update on what the future holds, Mike Florio reports that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did address the negotiations on Wednesday.

“I would say it’s in a very critical point for us,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday. “We’ve had a lot of interest in this, and we continue to.”

If the package is going to have a new home in the 2023 season, many would assume that a deal is either done or at least close to it. Goodell did not give any specific updates. He simply said that the NFL isn’t in any particular hurry.

“Our decisions are not based on timelines. They’re based on it being the best outcome with the best party.”

Last month, The Athletic’s David Kaplan reported that negotiations with Apple had “gotten silly” as the tech giant learns more and more restrictions that would be placed on the product.

In addition to Apple, Amazon and ESPN+ have both been connected to Sunday Ticket in the past.

‘The Shawn Ryan Show’ Added to Cumulus Podcast Network

Cumulus Podcast Network has added The Shawn Ryan Show, hosted by retired U.S. Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan to it’s expanding podcast portfolio.

Ryan’s YouTube channel has more than 950,000 subscribers with several shows garnering more than 1 million views.

“With long-form interviews, The Shawn Ryan Show documents the realities our soldiers face when they return home from war, uncovering inconvenient truths the mainstream media often ignores,” a Cumulus spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday. “Ryan also talks with experts about a wide variety of related topics, spanning from business to society and culture.”

Ryan produces the show twice every month, with new episodes airing on the first and third Monday of each month.

Gregg Giannotti: Somebody Needs to Tell Mike Francesa ‘Nobody Cares Anymore’

Mike Francesa and Chis “Mad Dog” Russo have been in the news for a multitude of reasons this week, which caught the ire of WFAN morning host Gregg Giannotti Thursday.

Wednesday, a clip of Russo discussing the sex life of recently-divorced Tom Brady with Howard Stern went viral on social media, saying “Is Tom Brady a good looking guy, and is he the greatest quarterback of all time?” and answering yes, Russo said “you mean to tell me that Tom Brady is going sexless in the last 18, 19 weeks? I would find that hard to believe.”

Earlier this week, Francesa confirmed rumors that he had been in discussions with ESPN’s First Take to surprise Russo during a live show, after a report from Andrew Marchand claimed Francesa was a possible regular debate partner for Mad Dog on the show.

“Somebody needs to knock on his door and say ‘Nobody cares anymore. Nobody’,” Giannotti said.

“Those two are really something,” update anchor Jerry Recco added.

Giannotti’s comments came after the Boomer & Gio crew discussed Francesa’s admission about the First Take rumors, after Francesa said “I don’t know how it got out. It didn’t get out from me,” incorrectly asserting that it “got out” because Francesa had discussed it on an earlier podcast.

In reality, Francesa had discussed doing an alternate broadcast of a game broadcast with Russo. The report from Andrew Marchand of The New York Post about Francesa potentially joining First Take was an entirely different story.

Ana Cabrera Announces CNN Exit

CNN anchor Ana Cabrera has confirmed her departure from CNN.

It was rumored earlier this month that the CNN Newsroom anchor would depart the network. Her exit is not related to CNN’s mass layoffs.

In a statement, Cabrera expressed her admiration for those at the network, but said in a statement it was “time to embrace new challenges and opportunities”.

“My heart is full of gratitude for the incredible opportunities I’ve had at CNN to serve our viewers and to work alongside extraordinary journalists. CNN has been like a family. I love my colleagues and believe in the mission of the organization.  

Cabrera has been with CNN for nearly a decade, and said she will take some time before her next move.

“I’m firmly committed to my work as a journalist in the next stage of my career. But for now, I look forward to hitting pause and spending some extra time with my family.”

A report from Variety claims its expect she’ll join NBC News, adding the 11:00 AM hour on MSNBC has been without a permanent anchor since Craig Melvin began focusing on Today.
