Mike Greenberg Absent Due to ‘Setback’

Mike Greenberg has been absent from Get Up and his ESPN Radio show since Wednesday, and explained that he has suffered “a little setback” as the reason.

The longtime ESPN personality tweeted that he would miss the rest of the week from his duties and thanked those “carrying the ball” for him while he was out.

Greenberg did not specify what ailment he suffered a setback from, but said he hoped to “get back as fast” as he could.

ESPN Radio afternoon duo Chris Canty and Chris Carlin filled in for Greenberg on Greeny, while on Get Up, Dan Graziano filled in on Wednesday and Brian Custer handled the hosting duties on Thursday and Friday.

Angelo Cataldi: ‘Nothing More Entertaining’ Than Jon Jastremski, Craig Carton Feud

The spat between The Ringer’s Jon Jastremski and WFAN’s Craig Carton spilled into a new market Friday, as longtime 94WIP morning host Angelo Cataldi discussed the dispute, calling it a “blood feud”.

“There is nothing in life I find more entertaining than a blood feud,” Cataldi admitted. “And I’m gonna tell you, I’ve had my share. It’s a fact.”

Cataldi then welcomed Jastremski to his show, and made a declaration before bringing him on.

“I’d like to make a statement before I put this man on: I hereby declare I’m on Team Jastremski,” Cataldi joked. “I’m on Team Jastremski in this feud.”

“I’d love to not be in The New York Post for the second straight week,” responded Jastremski.

After Cataldi noted Carton started at WIP and the host knew him well, Jastremski said he did as well.

“I had no issues with Craig Carton until I had an issue last week,” the New York, New York podcast host said.

Later in the interview, after Jastremski said if he would vote for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the NFL MVP instead of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Cataldi jokingly said he was back on Team Carton in the feud.

Pat McAfee Added To ABC Booth For Las Vegas Bowl

While all of the talk about college football on TV centered on the Big Ten and its new deals with FOX, CBS, and NBC in the off-season, it was ESPN that made a deal to steal the spotlight during the season. The network added Pat McAfee to the College GameDay crew ahead of the show’s week 2 visit to Austin, TX. Now, the flamboyant analyst is ready to go from pregame to in-game.

McAfee’s College GameDay co-host Kirk Herbstreit was a guest on McAfee’s show Friday. He revealed that he and McAfee will serve as co-hosts for ABC’s broadcast of the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday, December 17.

“It’s gonna be a blast,” Herbstreit told McAfee. “It’s your game. I’m just kinda there to hang out with you.”

Pat McAfee joked that can’t be true because he will still be identifying a lot of players by numbers while Herbstreit will be able to give the guys’ entire career history. He added that the idea that he gets to share a booth with Herbstreit is “hilarious.”

The Las Vegas Bowl will feature the Florida Gators and the Oregon State Beavers. Dave Pasch will call the game. Laura Rutledge will be on the sidelines.

In his first deal with ESPN, Pat McAfee worked with Adam Amin and Matt Hasselbeck. The trio called Thursday night college football games during the 2019 season.

CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr Departing

CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr has told fellow employee she will depart the network when her contract ends.

CNN Media reporter Oliver Darcy tweeted that Starr told colleagues she would be leaving in the coming days. “I have made the decision to move on,” Darcy quoted Starr.

She has worked at the network for 21 years, after previously working at ABC News and Jane’s Defence Weekly magazine and Business Week.

Her exit coincides with CNN trimming it’s staff, both on-air and behind the scenes, under the direction of new CNN CEO Chris Licht.

Starr has made headlines in recent years for clashes with Pentagon officials. She also was reportedly the subject of the Department of Justice under former President Trump secretly obtaining her email and phone records in 2020.

Boomer Esiason: Tony Romo Simply Has Different Style From Other NFL Analysts

CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo has proven to be a somewhat divisive presence with NFL fans, with many believing he’s the best analyst in the business while others don’t prefer to listen to the former Cowboy. WFAN morning co-host Boomer Esiason believes Romo just has a different style from everyone else.

A caller into Boomer & Gio asked Esiason and Gregg Giannotti their thoughts on the differences between Romo and another former Cowboys quarterback, Troy Aikman, wondering if Romo was able to correctly predict plays because he’s more recently retired than Aikman or if it was simply a style preference.

“That’s a style issue,” Esiason said. “100% a style issue. Troy’s been doing it for a very long time. He’s got the same partner, they have a certain way about doing games. He’s not about doing what Tony’s doing — and Tony does predict plays — but it’s just a different style. Tony’s been doing it for what, five years now? Troy’s been doing it for 20. Troy and Joe have a really good relationship and it’s a very matter-of-fact broadcast. Cris (Collinsworth) has to break in a new guy in Mike Tirico and then you have Jim (Nantz) and Tony. Tony tends to be exuberant, especially when the game is big.”

“Yeah, the AFC Championship Game or when he has the opportunity to call a Super Bowl,” Giannotti agreed. “You love that enthusiasm, despite what Dick Ebersol says.”

The quip about Ebersol by Giannotti is a reference to an October interview the former NBC Sports chairman gave where he said Romo “doesn’t seem into” broadcasts any longer. He later walked back the comments, saying the reason he was critical of the CBS NFL analyst was he tired from doing too many interviews and should not have made the comments he did about Romo.

Mike Golic Wants Former Notre Dame Player in NBC Booth

Mike Golic Sr. has not been shy about what he wants to see and hear when he turns on NBC to watch Notre Dame football. He wants analysis from fellow former Fighting Irish players.

Golic was on his son’s GoJo Show on Friday and the topic of Stanford’s interest in Jason Garrett came up. The NBC analyst is one of two reported finalists to become the school’s next head football coach.

Certainly there is less stress in TV than there is in coaching, but Mike Golic Jr. gets why a job like Stanford could appeal to someone that has seen life away from football.

“It’s a great gig if you like being comfortable in a nice, warm place that doesn’t expect you to win like you’re in the SEC West.”

Senior noted that if Garrett, who graduated from Princeton, does take the job, NBC will have a job to fill. Last year, he told BSM’s Brian Noe that he would be ready to call Fighting Irish football if he ever got the chance.

On the GoJo Show, he amended that a bit to say that there is no reason anyone other than a former Notre Dame player should be Jac Collinsworth’s partner.

“There’s enough former Notre Dame players in the media business that could do that,” the elder Golic said. “We’ve had what? USC, a couple of Boston College guys, a Purdue guy, and Jason Garrett, a former head coach. Like I said, there’s plenty of ND alum out there. Let’s start to move the goalposts that way as an analyst.”

This is a common complaint and debate amongst Notre Dame fans and media critics. Many of them make the same suggestion whenever the idea of filling the analyst role with a former Golden Domer comes up, but Golic urges everyone to be realistic in their expectations.

“I know a lot of people think the main guy or the number one guy could be Brady Quinn, but he is locked down at FOX pretty well there with his morning show and their college pregame show.”

It should be noted that late Friday night, Jason Garrett took to Twitter to say that he was no longer pursuing the Stanford job. He intends to remain at NBC.

As an independent program, Notre Dame does not have a TV deal with a conference. Instead, the school negotiated directly with NBC and has seen all of its home football games air on the network since the beginning of the 1991 season. The most recent agreement between the two sides runs through the end of the 2025 season.

NBC News Announces New Roles For Allie Raffa, Julie Tsirkin, Josh Lederman

NBC News has announced new roles for reporters Allie Raffa, Julie Tsirkin, and Josh Lederman.

Raffa has been named as a new White House correspondent for the network. She’ll work alongside current reporters Peter Alexander and Kristen Welker. Raffa previously served as a Capitol Hill correspondent for the network, covering the January 6th Committee, as well as the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. She has also covered congressional campaigns in Arizona and Georgia.

She joined NBC News in January after working at both Fox News and KNSD in San Diego.

Julie Tsirkin will move to the Congressional correspondent role vacated by Raffa. She has worked as a field producer and off-air reporter covering Capitol Hill for NBC News, a role she’s held since 2019.

Josh Lederman is joining the network’s London bureau as a foreign correspondent. Since joining NBC News in 2018, Lederman has most recently covered climate policy during the Biden Administration.

All three will begin their new roles in 2023.

Tony Katz: Washington Post Story About Shark Week ‘Just Ridiculous’

A story from The Washington Post earlier this week has caused an uproar in conservative media circles. May are questioning the publication over perceived outlandish coverage, with 93.1 WIBC morning host Tony Katz the latest to lament the headline.

The story in question is titled ‘Shark Week’ lacks diversity, overrepresents men named Mike, scientists say‘. In the article, author Daniel Wu quoted a study that claims the Discovery Channel programming featured more experts and hosts named “Mike” than women.

Katz was flabbergasted by the headline and story.

“The Washington Post putting out a story — Daniel Wu — saying that Shark Week is not diverse enough. You progressives could ruin anything. You really are awful. Every single one of you. You are just terrible. We have crossed Rubicon. There’s no way back. The sharks are racist. They lack diversity? You’re ridiculous. You’re just ridiculous.”

The WIBC host continued, “They don’t have enough women scientists on the Shark Week shows? I’m not in charge of who goes into whatever the science may be in the study of sharks, but what I want to hear from are the people who study sharks! And I don’t care if they’re men or women, black or white, Asian, Hispanic, it makes no difference.”

Katz continued by claiming no one who watches Shark Week cares about the scientists on the show. They care about the sharks. He equated it to seeing a video of someone in a bikini running on a beach similar to the Baywatch open, and asking what color the bikini was. “No one knows, and no one cares,” Katz said.

Hugh Hewitt: Why Don’t The Washington Post and New York Times Have Stories on Twitter Files?

The second installment of “Twitter Files” were released by former New York Times and Wall Street Journal journalist Bari Weiss, detailing alleged “shadow banning” of conservative voices on the social media platform before billionaire Elon Musk purchased the company. Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt wondered why there wasn’t more reporting on it.

In a tweet, Hewitt noted that The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal all had front page reports on Arizona Senator Kristen Sinema declaring she was leaving the Democratic party to become an independent.

He then asked why “the big three” don’t have any stories about “old twitter” or “Twitter BE (before Elon) on their homepage, simply asking “When?”.

Hewitt’s questioning of the three newspapers was part of a longer Twitter thread where he asserted that “legacy media wants to be careful” about the story, noting that Fox News and Al Jazeera were the only outlets he saw that had included the story on the front page of its website.

Dan Dakich Speaks After Departing 107.5 The Fan: ‘I Had to Make A Choice’

It was announced yesterday that Dan Dakich had departed 107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis, and would turn his attention solely to his digital show Don’t @ Me with OutKick. On that show Friday morning, Dakich detailed his exit from his longtime Indianapolis radio home.

“Yesterday, I had to make a choice,” Dakich said. “I knew this was coming. I had to make a choice. I was doing two shows, I was doing an afternoon show and I was doing a morning show. And thank you for supporting them both…but I made the choice, I chose OutKick.

“It was very simple. I am a guy that likes to start things. I am a guy that likes to develop things. 14 years in the saddle from Noon to 3:00 — actually it started from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM — at Emmis Communications. As my wife said, ‘You know what? That’s played out’. So when we were discussing what we were gonna do when the time came — when I was asked to make a choice — there really was no choice.”

Dakich said he was appreciative of the people running Radio One, which purchased The Fan, along with the entire Indianapolis cluster, from Emmis Communications earlier this year. However, Dakich said Emmis was “home” to the former college basketball coach.

“I love the people at Radio One — it was great — but I really loved the people at Emmis. Emmis is home to me. Jeff Smulyan and all of my co-workers there. Absolutely home. We changed ownership. I got a new job — I’m here, on OutKick. So yesterday — after my show — it was presented to me. I said ‘Look, I’m going to OutKick’. They said ok. Last show was yesterday.”

He concluded by noting he continues to be amazed that he is such a polarizing figure to many who cover sports media.

“I’m so dumb, I told Leigh (Dakich’s spouse) ‘no biggie’. Then I realized ‘Oh wait, this is gonna be big news’, which always fascinates me. It absolutely fascinates me that my life is such big news, but it is. Cover of The Indy Star, USA Today about the controversial host. It’s great, I love it, and I’m always fascinated by it.”
