ABC’s ‘The Light We Carry’ Special Draws 3.5 Million Total Viewers

0

With the 2022 midterm elections almost entirely in the rearview mirror (save for extended vote counts in selected areas and the Georgia U.S. Senate runoff), a few notable figures from elections of years past took the spotlight on November 13-15.

Bestselling author and former First Lady Michelle Obama was the focus of ABC’s Nov. 13 special “The Light We Carry”. Sharing the same title of her newest book release, Obama offered new life stories as well as coping strategies for surviving stress and uncertainty, especially since the early days of the COVID pandemic. “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts interviewed Obama in Chicago and hosted a lunch with Michelle’s mother and their close circle of friends.

For its original telecast, it drew 2.8 million total viewers on Nov. 13 from 10-11 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research. The special ranked fourth in the hour, behind NBC’s “Sunday Night Football: Chargers at 49ers”, Paramount’s “Yellowstone” season premiere and CBS’ “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Within the following seven days, it picked up an additional 710,000 viewers bringing the tally for ABC’s “Michael Obama: The Light We Carry” to 3.5 million.

On the next night (Nov. 14), ABC televised “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir’s exclusive interview with former Vice President Mike Pence. It was Pence’s first sit-down interview since the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol and the subsequent committee hearings that investigated the day. It delivered 3.93 million viewers, which nearly doubled its “Bachelor in Paradise” lead-in (2.27 million) and ranked third in the 10-11 p.m. hour (behind ESPN “Monday Night Football: Commanders-Eagles” and CBS’ “NCIS: Hawai’i”). In Live plus seven-day viewers, the Pence interview added another 1.3 million to its audience figures, totaling 5.23 million overall.

Then, on Nov. 15, as expected, Donald Trump announced his run for the 2024 U.S. presidency. The three major cable news outlets plus two newer news channels all saw an uptick for that announcement within the 9 p.m. ET hour, although CNN and MSNBC only checked in on the event periodically.

Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” drew the biggest crowd with 5.16 million viewers — the program’s top mark since Trump spoke with Hannity on Aug. 26, 2021. CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” was a distant runner-up at 2.43 million. “Alex Wagner Tonight” on MSNBC (1.83 million) was a decent third; its lead-out “Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” (1.99 million) built upon Wagner’s show that evening.

Newsmax devoted two hours to Trump’s announcement, from 9-11 p.m. ET, drawing 1.13 million total viewers — normally, the outlet averages about 1/8th that amount in prime time.

Upstart NewsNation posted 234,000 viewers. It was preceded by “Cuomo” (193,000) at 8 p.m. and succeeded by a post-analysis hosted by Chris Cuomo at 10 p.m. (122,000). The night helped propel NewsNation to another 100,000+ weekly viewer average in prime time, a mark that was in far distant reach for almost all of its two years in existence.

Ken Carman Continues To Look For Play-By-Play Opportunities

0

92.3 The Fan morning host Ken Carman has not been shy about his ambitions to one day work as a play-by-play announcer. One of the more frustrating things for Carman is that his co-host, Anthony Lima, works as a play-by-play broadcaster for Mid-American Conference football games for ESPN+.

“How do I put this? I am jealous but I’m not — quintessential jealousy is like I want something bad to happen to Anthony,” Carman said. “I don’t want anything bad to happen to Anthony. I want him to do a good job and keep doing games. I just can’t — for the life of me — understand how I drop hint after hint after hint over the last decade and nothing.”

When a producer told Carman instead of dropping hints he should drop job applications, the host replied “I’ve tried that route”.

“It’s been a decade and now it’s getting to the point where it’s pathetic. That’s why I’m not gonna sit there and say ‘You want me to fill out an application?’.”

Carman believes if he were to be the play-by-play broadcaster for a game, it would bring increased viewership, adding he tunes into to football games just to hear his partner on the call.

When a listener sent a text to the program saying Carman isn’t jealous of Lima but he is envious, he agreed saying “Anthony lives my dream every Saturday, and I tune in and watch Anthony and hope for the best for him”.

Lima concluded by saying the pair want every broadcasting job in the city, and in turn they tune in and watch people worse than them do higher profile jobs.

Through AI voice, fans can hear real-time game updates from the announcer on their phone or computer in their local language.

“We’re thrilled to already see the impact of our recent partnership with Veritone coming to life,” said Stats Perform Chief Revenue Officer Steve Xeller.

“Broadcasters and sports organizations can now leverage lifelike voice options in a wide range of languages for their stats reporting, reaching new fan bases around the globe, and providing better services to those who may not speak the host language, as well as those with visual impairments.”

Veritone Voice allows commentators to improve and personalize fan engagement and even bring their distinctive voice and cadence to several concurrent events in multiple languages.

“The ability to reach audiences around the world in their local language opens up a host of new opportunities for broadcasters and provides the best possible experience for the passionate fans,” Smith said.

Armstrong and Getty Raise More Than $820,000 During Radiothon

0

Conservative radio hosts Armstrong and Getty raised more than $820,000 for their ninth annual radiothon to benefit the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station.

The charity uses funds to reunited injured military members with their families during the holiday season, among other projects.

“Warrior Foundation Freedom Station is an amazing and efficient organization,” Joe Getty said. “We like to focus on the positive. But the truth is, there are so many sad and heartbreaking stories involving injured service members who’ve fallen into despair, loneliness, drug addiction or homelessness.”

Donations can still be made to the charity through the show’s website.

“We really believe it’s important to take the success of the radio show and do something positive–and we really believe in this charity,” Jack Armstrong said. “It is our patriotic duty to provide our time and help spread the word about this incredible cause. We remain grateful that our faithful Armstrong & Getty listeners have continued to support us by once again donating so generously to Warrior Foundation Freedom Station.”

Jason Chaffetz: Kevin McCarthy Questions About Trump Meeting With Anti-Semites ‘Is Why We Hate National Media’

0

Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz claimed reporters asking Congressman and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) about former President Donald Trump’s recent dinner with Kanye West and prominent white nationalist Nick Fuentes is further evidence that the American people are fed up with traditional media outlets.

During Outnumbered Tuesday, Chaffetz had scathing remarks about reporters insistence on asking about Trump instead of more pressing matters.

“This spending bill that is before Congress, only got one or two questions from the media about that. We don’t have spending in place. We have this rail strike,” said Chaffetz. “You know? I just got to say this, this is why America hates the national media. Three questions about Donald Trump meeting with Ye and whoever that white, you know…”

“They want clicks!,” Harris Faulkner interrupted.

“That is so irresponsible! Before they talked about the rail strike, before they talked about the border, before they did all this, they got to talk about Donald Trump,” said Chaffetz. “This is why we hate the national media!”

Brady Quinn: Booger McFarland’s Zach Wilson Criticism ‘One of the Dumbest Things I’ve Heard’

0

Last week, Booger McFarland said New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson “a young man who grew up with a lot of money” and has never “had to accept accountability”. Many criticized him for the stance, and FOX Sports Radio host Brady Quinn is the latest to point out the perceived absurdity in the comments.

During an appearance on the Pick Six Podcast, Quinn levied harsh criticism for the ESPN NFL analyst, saying it was completely unwarranted.

“It was one of the dumbest thing I’ve heard on air,” said Quinn. “And that’s saying something because Booger was on Monday Night Football and he said a lot of dumb stuff during that period of time.”

Quinn later made comments questioning McFarland’s legitimacy as an analyst.

“The interesting thing is that Booger came out on Ross Tucker’s podcast and defended himself as an analyst,” added Quinn. “O.K., well you just contradicted what you just said. Because as an analyst, you’re supposed to be analyzing what’s on the field. The last time I checked, you don’t have a doctorate or you’re not a doctor in understanding the sociology of the relationship or the parenting or anything else that goes along with that yet you want to analyze that. It was a bizarre deal.”

Don Lemon Asks Stephen Colbert: ‘What Should I Know About Chris Licht?’

0

CNN This Morning co-host Don Lemon was a guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday, and Colbert asked several questions about how the network is proceeding under the direction of new CEO Chris Licht.

One of the questions Colbert asked was about Licht’s reported anti-drinking message to the network’s cast during its upcoming New Years Eve telecast, which Lemon said was going to get him in trouble. Lemon said he and Licht had a bet about whether any conversation between the Lemon and Colbert about the CEO would make it on the air.

“You’re going to get me in trouble,” Lemon said.

“He doesn’t work here anymore, he can’t stop me from doing shit,” Colbert countered.

“He said ‘If you talk about me, it’ll never make air. Because who cares who I am?’ I said ‘Well, you’re a different Chris Licht than you were when you worked here’,” Lemon added.

“Yeah. No one cared about him when he worked here,” admitted Colbert. “But now he’s a media mogul.”

The two then pretended it was New Year’s Eve and jokingly grabbed a drink before Lemon asked Colbert questions about his new CEO.

“So, what should I know about Chris Licht?,” Lemon asked. “Give me some advice. I should have done this before I came out.”

“When he was in high school, he was a radio DJ on a classic rock station, and went by the name ‘The Licht-man’. There’s so much more to talk about,” Colbert concluded after saying he was told to end the interview by his producers.

Omaha Productions Eyes Investment From Peter Chernin’s Content Studio

0

A report from Axios’ Sara Fischer claims Omaha Productions is in discussions with The North Road Company, a content studio founded by Peter Chernin. Peyton Manning’s production company is said to be seeking a substantial investment.

Chernin launched The North Road Company in July with $800 million in funding to create scripted and unscripted projects for TV and film distributors.

According to Fischer, an investment from Chernin’s group to Omaha Productions would allow the company to “expand further into digital content, podcasts and sports-adjacent entertainment”. Chernin previously invested in Barstool Sports, helping the company become a big success before Penn National acquired the company in 2020.

Omaha Productions recently expanded into more digitally focused, sports-adjacent programming. The company announced an expansion of its ‘Places’ franchise with non-sports subjects including Luke Bryan, LL Cool J, and Admiral William McRaven.

Greg Hill Creates NFTs For Foundation Fundraiser

0

Greg Hill has done several good works with his foundation in New England, and has now created a new way for those to give to his charity on Giving Tuesday.

During The Greg Hill Show Tuesday, Hill announced NFTs will now be available as an option for those who seek to give to the organization.

“Because we wanted to try find a different way for you to give on Giving Tuesday –those of you who would normally give to The Greg Hill Foundation or to any other charity — I am pleased to tell you that we are — at this moment — dropping the first ever Greg Hill Foundation NFTs.”

After the show joked that he is the owner of a Marconi Award and now featured in NFTs, he should retire, Hill joked “I have always dreamed of being immortalized digitally, and now we are doing that for you this morning.”

Hill then added NFT buyers will be invited to a private event at Cisco Brewers Seaport in Boston. Buyers will also be in a raffle to win tickets to The Greg Hill Foundation events, a suite to a Boston Celtics game, $1,500 cash, or two tickets to a Taylor Swift concert this summer.

Kay Adams: Pat McAfee Has Built ‘The Dream’

0

Many in sports media respect what former NFL punter Pat McAfee has accomplished in his media endeavors. You can add FanDuel TV host Kay Adams to that list.

“I’m just blown away by the success and by the leverage he has,” Adams said on the My Other Passion podcast. “It is uncanny, it is aspirational, and it is self-made, so it is a beautiful thing. I — of course — watch what he does. I don’t want to be just like him but I do think he is so disruptive.

“He has such a chip on his shoulder. It drives him but I almost wish I could see it relieved a little bit. He’s thriving, he’s happy, and I think the thing that sticks out to me about him is that he’s truly grateful. Truly is grateful for everything he has, his opportunities. He’s worked his ass off for it.”

Adams pointed to McAfee’s recent spat with the NFL over use of the league’s logos as an indicator of not only his success but his influence in the sports landscape.

“He is true to himself but he mostly leads with gratitude, which I think is the epitome of success. But he’s out there show you what can be done. He’s the first, but will he be the last to have that sort of platform? That sort of swing? What he does with the NFL the other week, I’m paying attention to that.

“Because I want to see: is the NFL going to bend the knee to Pat McAfee? Does the NFL care what he says? But it’s interesting because he’s built himself to such a place that he does not need anyone and that is the dream.”

The NFL did eventually “bend the knee” and reversed course on limiting McAfee’s use of league trademarks.
