Rob Dibble, 97.9 ESPN Help Collect Nearly 5,000 Turkeys

97.9 ESPN Hartford host Rob Dibble helped collect more than 5,000 frozen turkeys and over 8m000 pounds of non-perishable foood items last week.

The station, along with other iHeart Connecticut stations, also raised more than $189,000 during the 23rd annual Turkey Tuesday at Connecticut Foodshare’s headquarters.

“We are continually grateful of the outpouring of donations from our listeners and Connecticut community on our annual events to ensure a Thanksgiving for all,” said iHeartMedia Hartford and New Haven Vice President of Marketing Vanessa Wojtusiak. “This year, the support from listeners, sponsors, partners and volunteers helped make a remarkable state-wide impact.”

Dibble has been a longtime support of Connecticut Foodshare, hosting its director Al Marino on his show several times throughout the year to ensure families in Connecticut have access to the food bank.

Ray Didinger Subject of NFL Films Feature, Tells Angelo Cataldi He’s Stayed Busy in Retirement

Former 94WIP host and Philadelphia Daily News and NBC Sports Philadelphia writer Ray Didinger retired earlier this year, but he told Angelo Cataldi he’s remained busy even though he stepped away from his media career.

“It’s been busier than I thought,” Didinger said. “Just because of the way things have gone in the city. The Phillies going to the World Series, the Eagles are 10-1, I don’t think any of us thought it was going to be this kind of run. Consequently, my phone hasn’t stopped ringing. I had no idea everyone in the world has a podcast so I’ve been getting all those calls. My name and my phone number are on way too many rolodexes all around the country. When somebody says ‘Hey, let’s do a piece about Philly’, my phone rings. It’s been busy but it’s been good. It’s been great to see what this has meant to the city.”

Didinger hosted shows from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays for 94WIP. In total, he spent more than 50 years covering the NFL before retiring in May.

After Cataldi asked for Didinger’s opinion on the 2022 Eagles, he asked the now-retired reporter if he was still using his yellow notepad. Didinger admitted he does still use the notepad, and Cataldi chastised his former colleague after he said he would retire the notepad. Cataldi joked when he retires after the Eagles season concludes, he hopes to lose co-hosts Al Morganti and Rhea Hughes’ phone numbers.

Didinger will be the subject of an NFL Films feature about his longtime career covering the league. The program will air on FS1 on Friday at 12:30 AM.

KNX News Hosting Town Hall On Fentanyl Crisis

97.1 KNX News has scheduled a live town hall event on Tuesday, November 29th on the subject of the fentanyl crisis in Los Angeles.

According to the station, fentanyl killed more than 1,600 people in Los Angeles County alone in the last year, with warnings from both local and federal officials about the crisis.

Deadly High: Teens and Fentanyl will be a one-hour event inside the Auadacy SoundSpace and will air at 5:00 PM PT.

Panelists for the special include the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, an addiction medicine specialist and Harvard Medical School Professor, the lead detective for fentanyl investigations from the LAPD, and the mother of a teenager who died from a fentanyl overdoes.

In addition to being heard on 97.1 FM and 1070 AM, the special can also be heard on the Audacy app. A video stream will also be available on KNXNews.com.

“There is no issue more pressing for the communities we serve,” said Audacy Southern California Regional President Jeff Federman. “Fentanyl is killing our kids, and we want to use our agenda-setting KNX News platform to make sure teens and parents are aware of the dangers.”

CNN Names Phil Mattingly New Chief White House Correspondent

CNN has announced Phil Mattingly will serve as the network’s new Chief White House Correspondent.

The move comes on the heels of Kaitlan Collins — who previously served in the role — being elevated to co-host of the network’s new morning show, CNN This Morning.

Mattingly joined CNN in 2015 to cover the following year’s Republican Presidential Primary. He has also worked for the network as a congressional correspondent.

The network also announced MJ Lee has been elevated to succeed Mattingly as the Senior White House Correspondent. She joined CNN in 2015. CNN also added Priscilla Alvarez to its White House stable. She joined CNN from The Atlantic in 2019.

Colin Dunlap: ‘Insane’ What Tom Rinaldi Has Done During Last Week

It was a banner week for FOX Sports during the Thanksgiving holiday, and no one got more work than the network’s Tom Rinaldi. 93.7 The Fan morning show host Colin Dunlap believes Rinaldi deserves props for his schedule.

“It’s insane what he’s done,” Dunlap said. “I wrote it down and I saw somebody tweet it. Listen to this schedule — and I don’t even know if it’s worth it — but listen to what Tom Rinaldi has done: Wednesday? Qatar. Thursday? Dallas for the Cowboys game. Friday? Back to the US-England match in Qatar. Saturday? In Columbus, Ohio for Michigan/Ohio State. Sunday? Kansas City for the NFL game.

“And then if you’ve gotta guess, he’s gonna be at the American game tomorrow so he’s travelling back to Qatar today. I don’t even travel back and forth to Baltimore like that. He’s going from Doha to Dallas and Kansas City to Doha and Columbus to Doha. Something’s up! There’s two Tom Rinaldi’s.”

Dunlap, co-host Chris Mack, and producer Adam Crowley then discussed whether FOX Sports was using Rinaldi enough. While noting that he’s travelling to all these locations, they believe he isn’t being utilized enough for the bigger stories he’s been known for.

They also joked about whether Rinaldi was flying back and forth on Rupert Murdoch’s private jet and whether or not that would make life easier.

Josh Jacobs scored a tremendous 86-yard touchdown run in overtime as the Las Vegas Raiders defeated the Seattle Seahawks Sunday. Unfortunately, many didn’t get to see it live as NFL RedZone cut away from the game due to NFL broadcasting rules. WFAN morning show Boomer & Gio believe the coverage was botched by the channel and host Scott Hanson.

“The RedZone is who I have issue with,” Gregg Giannotti said. “Scott Hanson — who I have trusted for many years — tells me and the rest of the country to go over to your local CBS and watch the rest of this overtime. ‘International customers stay here. If you’re in America, go over to your local CBS.’ So I go over to my local CBS and there’s some guy wiping off dinosaur eggs with a brush.”

“I’m so confused with the TV rules — and I’ve been in it for 22 years. I’m just very confused,” Boomer Esiason added.

After a discussion about what the rules actually are for television broadcasters and the NFL, the show concluded NFL RedZone couldn’t air portions of just a single game that was still underway.

“If he would have told me ‘We’re taking this off, sorry, those are the rules’, I could have accepted that. He told me that it was on my local CBS,” Giannotti said.

Esiason asked for the show to get in touch with Mike North, the NFL’s Vice President of Broadcasting, joking that they needed to know who to blame for the blunder.

“Somebody dropped the ball over there, that’s for sure,” Giannotti concluded.

Scott Hanson Clarifies NFL RedZone Missteps During Raiders/Seahawks

NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson ruffled feathers for many football fans Sunday when he told viewers to switch from the channel to their local CBS affiliates to see the conclusion of the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks game.

Unfortunately, for both viewers and Hanson, the game was only being shown in a small portion of the country, with the rest of the nation’s CBS affiliates already airing 60 Minutes. The game was also available to NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers.

Hanson took to Twitter Sunday evening to explain what happened on the air and to apologize for the miscalculation.

Hanson believed in the moment that CBS was airing the overtime period to a national audience. But due to NFL broadcasting rules, the game was only available to stations in the Las Vegas, Fresno, Sacramento, Reno, Eugene, Portland, Boise, Seattle, and Spokane markets on the west coast. Additionally, the game was available in Chicago, Tampa, Atlanta, and Charlotte.

He apologized for the mistake and said he would have more details at a later date.

ESPN Creates ACC/SEC Challenge

ESPN, in conjunction with the ACC and SEC, is slated to announce the creation of the ACC/SEC Challenge for men’s and women’s basketball.

The series will begin for the 2023-2024 season, launching with 28 games played between the two sports. That number will grow to 30 contests when the SEC expands for the 2025-2026 season.

Every game in the challenge will be aired on an ESPN platform, with each side hosting the same amount of home games.

“The future ACC/SEC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Challenges will be outstanding events for our student-athletes, member institutions and fans,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. “The SEC, led by Greg Sankey, and our partners at ESPN have been terrific, and there’s great excitement for the first annual ACC/SEC Challenge next season. As part of this announcement, we’d like to acknowledge the Big Ten for its partnership on the ACC/B1G Challenge that spanned more than 20 years.”

“We are excited women’s and men’s basketball student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete with their colleagues from the ACC as we initiate a new Basketball Challenge experience,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “I appreciate the collaboration of Jim Phillips and the ACC members, along with our broadcast partner ESPN, to make possible the SEC/ACC Basketball Challenge which will provide our fans with exciting basketball early in the 2023-24 season. I also thank the Big 12 for the many great challenge games we experienced together in past years.”

The creation of the event comes on the heels of the Big Ten’s new media rights deal with FOX, NBC, and CBS, ending a nearly four-decade relationship with ESPN. The ACC/Big Ten Challenge began in 1999, with the SEC/Big 12 Challenging beginning in 2013. Both events will cease to exist following this season.

Charlotte Radio Legend Gerry Vaillancourt Dies at 72

Charlotte broadcasting legend Gerry Vaillancourt died Sunday; he was 72. Vaillancourt, known to listeners as Gerry V, was a former radio host on WBT and ESPN 730 in Charlotte. He was also an analyst for the Charlotte Hornets, and followed the franchise to New Orleans, another city where he established his presence before moving back to the Queen City in 2017.

His daughter told The Charlotte Observer that Vaillancourt died from a heart condition that he was diagnosed with 25 years ago. 

“Daddy died peacefully this morning with his daughters at his side,” a Facebook post read. “He truly lived an amazing life and fought hard until the end. I am so grateful we were able to have a full family Thanksgiving with all the grandkids.” 

According to NBA.com, Vaillancourt made a mark on the Charlotte sports talk radio scene. He was voted Talk Show Host of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000 by Creative Loafing magazine.

“Big prayers up to our pal Gerry V and his family. Gone way too soon,” tweeted former colleague, WBT and WFNZ sportscaster Jim Szoke. 

Originally from New York City, Vaillancourt played basketball at Gardner Webb University. He also had coaching stints at Bishop McGinnis H.S. in Winston-Salem, N.C., James Madison University in Virginia, Davidson College, and Appalachian State University. 

His daughter posted on Facebook that the family has peace knowing that she was there to comfort him in his final days. 

“Our family is devastated, but we will honor his memory by living life the way he did – with chuckles and grins, positivity and always chasing our crazy,” the post read.

Kim Klacik Scheduled To Be Deposed in Defamation Lawsuit Against Candace Owens

Former WBAL Radio host Kim Klacik will be deposed this week in her multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens. 

Last year, Owens accused Klacik of misappropriation of campaign funds and using cocaine. Owens also accused Klacik of manipulating conservative Republicans out of money by using “race hustling” tactics.

“This week is super important,” Klacik announced on Instagram. “I get to go to Nashville; it is deposition week. If you guys’ recall, a year, and a half ago, a little miss attitude made a video about me 44 minutes long with all these false accusations.” 

“This may have started as conservatives in-fighting, what is happening now is that I have stumbled upon something that no conservatives, or a majority of conservative Republicans, are aware of. There is so much here about Kimberly Klacik that it is overwhelming,” Owens stated at the time. 

Klacik is accusing Owens of defaming her, her campaign at the time, and her staff. 

“This week, I get to go speak on it,” added Klacik. 

Recently, Klacik announced her exit from WBAL. She had taken over the late morning/afternoon slot at WBAL in April from Yuripzy Morgan, who left the role to run for political office.
