Bobby Belt Joining Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan

0

105.3 The Fan has announced Bobby Belt will join Shan & RJ on the station’s morning show.

A Dallas Cowboys Insider, Belt joined the station in 2021. He also works as a producer at NFL Network, and has previously co-hosted The ‘Boys And Girl podcast with Jane Slater of NFL Network.

“This is exciting. I wish someone would have told me before I got on-air,” Belt joked after the announcement was made during Friday’s show. “I’m psyched. I’m ready to get going. I’m ready to complain routinely about Christian Wood not getting enough minutes. I’m ready to complain that the Rangers don’t develop their arms in the minor leagues. I’m excited to get going. I’m not excited enough to be there at 5:30 AM, so I’ll be there at 6:00. I love you guys, but I love sleep more.”

Belt will begin full-time with the show on Monday. He replaces Troy Hughes, who exited from the show in August to work for experimental marketing company Lime Media.

Tyler Polumbus Defends Report on Russell Wilson Using Seattle Audibles After Broncos Denial

0

Altitude Sports Radio host Tyler Polumbus created a firestorm surrounding the Denver Broncos this week after saying quarterback Russell Wilson was using audibles from his days with the Seattle Seahawks instead of those agreed upon by the Broncos.

On Thursday, Polumbus said media members have to walk a fine line while discussing information about NFL quarterbacks, and also adjusted some of his commentary.

“I knew it was a big story when I got the information. When stuff like that goes out there you want to be careful because you know it’s a big deal. I’m not surprised to hear — more or less — the denial is news to me. It didn’t confirm it. (Broncos Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett) definitely didn’t confirm it. It wasn’t a denial either. If there was one thing I could have changed, I wouldn’t have said he was losing his mind out there, because that implies it’s happening all the time. I don’t know that it’s happening all the time, but I know it happened and it’s been part of the chaos that’s been going on out there.”

The story was covered by several national news outlets, and co-host Josh Dover said there wasn’t a scenario where Hackett came out and confirmed the information given to Polumbus.

“I stand by what I said,” Polumbus reiterated. “It’s not unusual for this sort of thing to happen. Your in one city for over a decade and you move to another one? There’s gonna be some muscle memory there. You’re gonna mess some things up.”

Dover then jokingly asked Polumbus if Wilson called his second wife — pop singer Ciara — his first wife’s names for a few months after they got married.

NASCAR Chasing Nearly $1 Billion Annual Rights Fee In Next TV Deal

0

The current media rights deal for NASCAR with FOX Sports and NBC Sports doesn’t end until after the 2024 season, but the organization is currently plotting what it wants its next deal to look like, according to a report from Front Office Sports.

Currently, NASCAR makes $820 million per year from the two networks. In its new rights deal, it is expected to seek a deal in the neighborhood of $900-950 million range.

NASCAR plans to begin negotiating with its current media partners in the early months of 2023, but is currently happy with FOX and NBC.

“We work really closely together, both from a scheduling perspective, but also just in terms of how they monetize the sport. Whether that’s pushing more brands and advertisers to spend on Fox and NBC,” NASCAR Senior Vice President of Media and Productions Brian Herbst told FOS. “Fox had their third consecutive year of ad revenue increases in 2022. NBC had their second consecutive year of ad revenue increases in 2022. So it’s working for them — both from a viewership and an ad revenue perspective.”

In February of this year, NASCAR President Steve Phelps told the Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast that broadcast television “has to be a part” of the organization’s next television rights deal.

As its current media partners, FOX and NBC have exclusive negotiating windows with NASCAR.

Dan Bernstein: Twitter Helped Expose Me To Other Perspectives

0

The potential death of Twitter has been a hot topic in sports media circles as many personalities grapple with the possibility of its demise. On 670 The Score, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes discussed what the social media platform has meant to them.

“There are people who believe that what Twitter has done to level the playing field for some marginalized communities — for people of color, people who have needed it to find a voice — part of the goal of destroying it is to take that away,” said Bernstein. “That that was an absolute forethought in this whole thing. To take away the voice of the voiceless.”

“To take away the voice and take away the connectivity of it,” Laurence Holmes added. “You’re meeting with, talking with, and discussing ideas with people you probably — especially considering the pandemic — never met in real life.”

“It helped me learn others perspective on things I would have otherwise never been exposed to,” replied Bernstein.

“For sure,” Holmes agreed. “It’s very strange now to meet people in real life — or see them in real life — when you’ve had a relationship with them on Twitter.”

Stephen A. Smith Calls 95.7 The Game’s Steiny & Guru ‘Ridiculously Clueless’ During Interview

0

During an interview with 95.7 The Game’s Steiny & Guru, things got contentious for just a moment between the show’s Matt Steinmetz and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

Steinmetz lamented the downfall of the Golden State Warriors, saying their dynasty is over and their championship window has closed.

“Let me ask you a question,” Smith said. “Who is the reigning — defending — NBA champion?”

“That was the team formerly known as the Warriors,” responded Matt Steinmetz.

“No, no, no, no, no,” Smith rebutted. “I asked you to answer the question.”

“It’s agenda city out here!,” countered Steinmetz. “It’s the Warriors.”

“Thank you,” Smith politely said. “So my point to you is this: How can you say the dynasty is over in November when the playoffs don’t start until April for the reigning, defending NBA champions? With all due respect, do you have any idea how ridiculously clueless you sound?”

Steinmetz then argued the Warriors can not both try to develop new talent while also trying win a championship.

It was the second time Smith had a contentious interview with a local radio host Thursday, after speaking with Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas after calling them out on First Take on consecutive days.

NFL Sunday Ticket Negotiations With Apple ‘Have Gotten Silly’

1

A report from The Athletic details why the NFL has not announced a new partner for the NFL Sunday Ticket package. David Kaplan claims there have been continued hiccups in the negotiations, mentioning the bargaining has gotten sideways between the league and Apple.

“This negotiation has gotten silly. … Clearly, there’s a problem. I think it’s really clear Apple is learning things they didn’t know,” the anonymous NFL source told Kaplan. “What the conversation is, is Apple’s like, ‘OK, we can’t sell internationally. OK, that was important to us. And we can’t sell it exclusively against Fox and CBS. Well, OK. Well, that changes its value.’”

The report also details Amazon Prime and YouTube remain in the mix as potential suitors for the service, should talks with Apple and the league fall apart.

The NFL is looking for as much as $3.5 billion annually for rights to the service.

Candace Parker ‘Learning How to Turn Numbers Into A Storyline’ During NBA Analyst Roles

0

In addition to her work in the Turner Sports studios on Tuesday night, Candace Parker has had the opportunity to be a color commentator during games this season. Parker enjoys both being at games and in the studio and there is one skill she is still trying to master.

Parker was a guest on the Sports Media with Richard Deitsch Podcast this week and she said that she is still trying to figure out in this age of analytics, how to turn numbers into a storyline for the audience:

“I think the big part I’m learning still is how do you turn numbers into a storyline. How do you connect the numbers to what you want to talk about? There’s one thing to say ‘hey, he’s shooting 77% from the free throw line’ but there’s another thing to say ‘he worked with a shooting coach this past summer. Because of that shooting coach, he was able to raise his free throw percentage by 3%’. There’s a different way and level you can do that. I look at the numbers and try to connect that to a storyline that I find online or what I hear on a podcast or different topics of conversation.”

Parker mentioned that when she does get the chance to talk to the coaches at a production meeting, she tries to see what those numbers mean from a big-picture perspective.

“Sometimes, 90% of the notes that I have you don’t use and then when it comes to talking to the coaches, you bring in those numbers and you try to get them to expand on what they are working on, what they are individually trying to do as a unit, where they are big picture.”

As for her studio work, Parker listens to a lot of podcasts and reads what the beat writers have to say during her preparation. Plus, she always has past notes ready to go with a tool that she is able to use to go back into past notes.

“I’m a big believer in you always use what knowledge you have now and compare it to before. You compare it to something that happened previously either this season or in the playoffs a year before. I just generally watch basketball and I think through that then I’ll watch the team 2-3 times before and it can be a quarter, it can be a whole game.

“I use OneNote. That helps me a lot. I use that and I use it every time I’m on television. When I’m on television on a different time, I can always pull up the notes I had previously. I’m not a big paper-to-pen. I write everything there so I have something to reflect on in the future.”

Parker has always been a big basketball fan and she told Deitsch she always looks for what’s next, which led her to doing work at NBATV and Turner Sports. She enjoys being able to have conversations about sports with people and feeling like she is at a dinner table.

“I found out that when you get to NBATV or TNT, yes you have to be seasoned a little bit, but it really is fun because you are sitting like you are at the dinner table talking about sports, but with people that you grew up idolizing. Once I figured that out, that’s when I was like this is really what I want to do. This is the second-best job ever, second to only playing, to be able to talk and analyze sports.”

Toucher & Rich: ‘Let Twitter Burn to the Ground’

0

Many on Twitter decried it’s downfall yesterday, with those sending farewell messages should the social media platform cease to exist in the coming days. 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich debated whether they could do without the Elon Musk-owned social media site.

“Earlier this week, (Musk) sent out an email to employees that said they’d have to work longer and more hardcore — I believe hardcore is the term he used — Twitter employees,” Rich Shertenlieb explained. “They had to agree by 5:00 PM on Thursday. It was basically two things you could agree to: it was either yes, you were going to be more hardcore and work more hours or you could quit and get a three-month severance. There was a massive walkout to the point that so many people left they are saying — engineering wise — that if there was even a small glitch, it will shutdown Twitter because there is nobody there who is able to fix it.”

“I would be all for Twitter going away,” Fred Toucher said. “That would be fantastic. Let it burn.”

“I use Twitter for a lot of news,” Shertenlieb argued. “Out of all the social media things, I — by far — use Twitter the most.”

“You could get by without Twitter,” Toucher countered.

“It’s not as easy!,” Shertenlieb said.

They also discussed how Instagram has plenty of content, but it’s inability to easily share links is a detriment. Toucher concluded by saying “Just ’cause you hate it doesn’t mean it ain’t the future.”

The Donald Trump Conundrum For News/Talk Personalities

0

With 721 days to go until the 2024 Election, Donald Trump decided it was time for him to officially jump into the race. He could not wait any longer. And on Tuesday night, in a speech that lasted more than an hour, he decided to move ahead and officially kick off 2024, one week after the 2022 midterms ended.

This has created an interesting dynamic for talk radio. Not only does it give reason to quickly move on from the over-analyzing of dissecting what happened in the midterms, but Trump is generally good for business, especially when he has been (mostly) off the radar the last two years.

And as is always the case with Trump, the opinions and emotions will be strong across the aisle.

But with the opinions and emotions so strong across the aisle, what’s the play for News/Talk hosts?

Many are comparing this to 2015-16, when conservative-leaning media broke down pro-Trump or never-Trump, and it changed the landscape and careers for some, depending on which side of the aisle one landed on.

However, there are stark differences this time around.

Those who would call themselves conservatives would all agree that the policies implemented by Donald Trump were a success. Whether it was economic policy, foreign policy, trade policy, or judges appointed, the 45th President kept to his word on all of the above and they were all highly-successful, especially before the pandemic.

There is no true “never-Trump” angle amongst conservatives like there was in 2016. The question this time around is simply: “Is Trump the best person to move Trumpism forward? Or is there a better option to keep the movement moving ahead?”

That’s a very different conversation amongst the news/talk audience, that if handled properly, should not result in audiences turning on their favorite personalities, regardless of which side of the conversation one might come down on.

For these reasons, I don’t foresee a “civil war” amongst conservatives in the way we saw it six years ago.

And for our audiences, there will be hosts who lean more Pro-Trump or Pro-DeSantis (or whoever else), but I would suggest that in order to not risk alienating either side of the audience, that we guide the conversation this early in the process.

That doesn’t mean not having an opinion. That’s ultimately our job. But if we form that opinion, on either side, through the prism of, “We’ve still got 18-24 months of this, things will change, and here are the pros and cons of what I’m thinking…”, it creates an environment that invites listener interaction and makes your show the place to voice opinions on both sides of the issue.

Also, that audience interaction will remain our great leverage in this conversation that cable news, newspapers, and social media can’t duplicate with the same intimacy. So let’s take advantage of it and it will also give us an on-the-ground feel for where the audience is in our market in a way the political consulting class can only dream of.

That’s how we can win this 2024 news cycle, that, yes, believe it or not, has already started.

Boomer Esiason Defends Bill Cowher After Critical Jeff Saturday Comments

0

Bill Cowher raised eyebrows Sunday during The NFL Today after he condemned the hiring of Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Many were quick to criticize the former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, but colleague Boomer Esiason defended Cowher during Friday’s edition of Boomer & Gio on WFAN.

“You got The NFL Today on Sunday. On the last NFL Today, Bill Cowher was trashing the Jeff Saturday hire. Called it a ‘disgrace to the coaching profession’,” Gregg Giannotti said. “There was some blowback there from Coach Cowher’s opinion there. One of them coming from Pat McAfee — who’s also a Pittsburgher — and he said ‘Bill Cowher, shut the f— up, dude’. He also got some criticism from malaprop king Christopher ‘Mad Dog’ Russo. Will Bill Cowher on The NFL Today address his critics at any point and take ’em on head on?”

“Not at all,” Esiason said. “Not that I know of. There’s no reason to. You give your impassioned opinion, and I stand by coach Cowher’s opinion. I’ve worked with him for so long. I know who he is, and I know what the NFL means to him, what he means to the NFL, how he views coaches, and how coaches view him. If there’s anyone in this world that has the right to say what he said last Sunday, it’s him.”

“The reason he would address it — to me — it really would be interesting if he at some point was like ‘Just gonna take a couple of minutes here to slap around Pat McAfee. Little punk-ass punter. Prick’,” Giannotti said in his best Cowher impersonation. “You know, something like that.”

“‘Kiss my gold jacket ass’,” Esisason said.

Giannotti then continued his impersonation of Cowher by saying “When you show up in Canton, then we can talk”.
