Tucker Carlson: Social Media Ban Is Attack On Democracy

0

Fox News host Tucker Carlson is sounding the alarm on existing social media bans to people like former President Donald Trump calling such bans “attacks on democracy.”

Big Tech moved to ban Trump from all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube following the Jan 6th riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Carlson told his audience Wednesday that it really doesn’t matter what you think of Trump or his policies on fentanyl or anything else.

“If you’re an American, you have to acknowledge that in order for our democracy to function, candidates for office — political candidates — have to be allowed to speak in public,” Carlson said in a transcript published on Breitbart

Carlson stated that if political candidates can’t speak in public then this can’t be a democracy.

“He is still banned despite Elon Musk’s takeover,” Carlson said. “Trump is still banned from Twitter tonight, one of our premier social media platforms. Parler, you’ll remember, was pulled off the internet for giving Donald Trump an account.”

“So, you have to wonder now, where are the defenders of democracy? People were yelling last week about democracy is dying. If there are not calling for Trump to be re-platformed, you will know for certain they’re not defenders of democracy. They’re totalitarians,” he added.

Chris Licht: Media Coverage, Analysis Doesn’t Belong on Linear Television

0

Many questions remain regarding CNN’s unceremonious cancellation of “Reliable Sources” and the subsequent exit of host Brian Stelter. The network under CEO Chris Licht has undergone several changes and there’s more to come.

Recently, Licht sat down with journalist Kara Swisher on her podcast to discuss a bevy of topics related to the network, a network that Licht has promised to steer in an entirely different direction than his predecessor Jeff Zucker.

Licht touched on Stelter’s departure, citing the need for CNN to take a different approach when it comes to covering what’s happening in the media. “Reliable Sources” focused on the analysis of and commentary from the American news media.

“I want to do media coverage in a different way,” Licht told Swisher. “I think you can see Sarah Fisher who we just brought over as a contributor, who still works for Axios, and my vision for media coverage is that it doesn’t really have a place on linear television.”

Stelter came to CNN after working as a media reporter for The New York Times. Stelter had agreed to host a daily episode of Reliable Sources on CNN+, but the streaming platform was disbanded shortly thereafter.

Licht said he prefers that CNN do media analysis and commentary on its digital platform which reportedly reaches 180 million unique users.

“When it makes sense to be on television, we put Oliver Darcey on or we put Sarah [Fisher] on,” he added.

Stelter reportedly had three years left on his contract when he was let go by CNN. Swisher reported during the conversation that Stelter had told friends that he felt like a sacrificial lamb. Swisher asked Licht why he didn’t offer Stelter a position elsewhere in the company.

“I don’t really want to get into specifics on that,” Licht stated. “It’s not fair to Brian.”

Buck Sexton: Politics Shouldn’t Influence Celebrating Musical Artists

1

Ticketmaster is under fire for an outage that prevented millions of Taylor Swift fans from buying tickets to her upcoming tour.

Clay Travis and Buck Sexton reacted to the issue during their nationally syndicated show Thursday. In some cases, tickets are reportedly going for $20,000 each.

“She’s got a catalog of songs and she’s only 30 years old,” said Travis. “She might become the wealthiest musician in the history of music. She writes and controls much of her own catalog.”
Travis stated that Swift’s fans are still very young and they’re going to be watching her in concert for the next 30 years.

“Almost half of our audience is female,” Sexton said. “What percentage of them like Taylor Swift? When I say like, I mean listen to Taylor Swift, I bet it’s high.”

Sexton praised Swift for her “catchy” songs but said that he had never been to a Swift concert before. Sexton added that he would not let Swift’s politics, which are notoriously left-leaning, get in the way of enjoying her music.

“I am willing to celebrate the artistry of somebody. If you’re not going to listen to somebody because of their politics, unfortunately, you’re going to miss out on 95 percent of what’s out there right now.”

Christian Arcand Returns To Where It All Started At WEEI

0

Since the turn of the century alone, Boston has hosted 12 ticker tape parades to celebrate championships. Christian Arcand has had the opportunity to experience that success firsthand, initially as a diehard Boston sports fan and then as a voice of the fan. Now as he begins his second stint at the WEEI — this time as a producer and weekend host — he aims to ensure a seamless transition for both the Merloni, Fauria, & Mego afternoon drive show and his career in sports media.

Returning to a station where his Boston radio career began, Arcand enters the same building where he started his last sports media job with 98.5 The Sports Hub. Once the station moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts, WEEI moved its studios to the location – and it is where its shows are broadcast from today. Arcand’s time at 98.5 The Sports Hub ended in being laid off last month; despite that though, going to work evokes feelings of nostalgia and déjà vu.

“Walking back in there for the first time was pretty wild,” Arcand said, who returned to WEEI earlier this week. “I was laid off from The Sports Hub and it was a big surprise to me and to, I think, everybody that [it] happened.”

After graduating from the University of Colorado, Arcand moved back east to work for WDIS AM 1170 in Norfolk, Massachusetts, which he says isn’t really an option for those entering the business today.

“These little stations are all gone,” Arcand expressed. “Those were pipelines to places like WEEI and WFAN and other places in the area. You’d work in Connecticut or you’d work in Rhode Island or whatever and these places all just disappeared.”

Just over a year later, Arcand made the move to ESPN New Hampshire, initially co-hosting Christian and King with Tom King, a sportswriter for the Nashua Telegraph covering the New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and other college and high school sports. The show was broadcast during the midday time slot from noon to 3 p.m. and sought to entertain the audience while informing them about the day’s action.

After nearly four years on the air, Arcand transitioned to work with Pete Sheppard, a former member of the heralded WEEI program The Big Show hosted by Glenn Ordway, on Arcand and Sheppard. Additionally, Arcand was named as the show’s executive producer, meaning that while the show was going on, he was often focused on many different tasks. Once Christian and King was brought back, he continued working in this dual role before the show ended in January 2017, six months before the format flipped from ESPN-branded sports to oldies.

“It was a lot – cutting up all the audio you want to play, then playing it during the show, then cutting the commercial [and] trying to answer the phone,” Arcand said. “It was this whole thing, but I really loved it; we had a lot of fun up there.”

While Arcand currently works at WEEI, it is his second stint with the station – and this time, he is working in a brand new role. He initially joined the station in 2013 as a sports anchor and co-host of the evening program Planet Mikey featuring Mike Adams. Shortly thereafter, he helped launch WEEI Late Night, airing from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. where he became known in the Boston marketplace going on the air after the conclusion of Boston Red Sox live game broadcasts.

Unlike his time in New Hampshire though, he was solely hosting and not producing – requiring him to adjust to not having as much oversight regarding the inner workings of each program.

“I’m not a control freak, but I remember [thinking], ‘Wow, this is different. I’m not running the board anymore. I’m not playing my own stuff,’” Arcand said. “….That was kind of jarring at first [but] I ended up working with a lot of great producers and I still am today.”

Mike Thomas, who currently serves as the senior vice president and market manager for Audacy Boston, was integral in building 98.5 The Sports Hub from its launch in August 2009. He was responsible for signing Arcand away from WEEI to join the brand as co-host of The Adam Jones Show airing weeknights.

Working alongside show producer Jeremy Conley, he gained an in-depth understanding of what it entails to produce a sports talk radio show in a major market, helping broaden his knowledge of the craft and position him for his current job with WEEI.

“I really had a good opportunity to learn from some of, I think, the best [producers] in the business,” Arcand said. “….It’s cool being a fan of these guys and then getting to work with them and learn from them and all that other stuff…. It’s really a job that requires a lot, and the guys who are really good at it, I think, are just top-notch.”

Over the last several years, 98.5 The Sports Hub has earned massive wins across the Nielsen ratings, recently finishing number one in the summer book across all dayparts in the men 25-54 demographic. Days later though, the station’s parent company Beasley Media Group made budget cuts, resulting in Arcand and Toucher and Rich producer Mike Lockhart’s employment being terminated.

While Lockhart has since been re-hired after Fred Toucher and Rich Shertenlieb lobbied for the decision to be reversed, Arcand was in the job market quickly mulling over his future in the industry. In fact, it was reported that Arcand was on the verge of signing a three-year contract that would have kept him at the station before the termination of his employment.

“I was so shocked that it had happened and it was sort of hard to deal with it,” Arcand expressed. “Then I was angry about it and then I sort of channeled that into, ‘Okay, what am I going to do next here?’ You start thinking, ‘Is this it? Is this the end of the career? Are you going to even continue doing this?,’ and that was a thought I had a couple of times.”

Arcand’s abrupt departure from 98.5 The Sports Hub and Boston sports radio was short-lived though, as there was a substantial market for his services. In the end, he communicated with Thomas and WEEI operations manager Ken Laird, utilizing industry connections and his own versatility to return to the place where he began working professionally in Boston.

“Seeing that WEEI was in the market for someone on-air and to produce [the afternoon] show, I was right there and willing to try out something I hadn’t done in a while,” Arcand said. “It was a no-brainer, really. Going to WEEI was a no-brainer for me. I started there. That’s my radio home.”

As someone once again “new” to the station, Arcand is looking to foster a working chemistry with afternoon hosts Lou Merloni, Christian Fauria and Meghan Ottolini, along with radio producer Ryan Garvin. Arcand enters the role replacing show executive producer Tyler Devitte who left the station to pursue other opportunities and feels that the composition of the show is unique in the sports radio landscape. In short, it gives them an opportunity to further differentiate themselves from other afternoon programs across multiple platforms of dissemination.

“It’s an interesting show because Lou and Christian are both ex-jocks,” Arcand explained. “It’s rare that you sort of see shows where it’s just two guys like that and it was just them for a while but then with [Glenn] Ordway and then they brought in Meghan [Ottolini].”

Arcand had been listening to the afternoon drive program long before the offer to return to WEEI was made to him and now looks to offer his insight and expertise when necessary. He does not want to enter his new role with insolence or by coming off as dogmatic when expressing his opinions about the show.

“I’m sort of taking the approach of observing more than maybe I would in a couple of weeks from now or something,” he said. “I want to sort of make sure I get the rhythm of the show and the clock and everything like that. Those are all things that you have to be more aware of when you’re behind the glass as opposed to on the air.”

Arcand will be hosting a solo radio program on WEEI every Saturday afternoon, reminiscent of Sunday Service, a weekend show he used to host on 98.5 The Sports Hub. He is excited to be able to return to the Boston airwaves and connect with his audience once a week to bring them the latest sports news and entertaining talk – all while bringing his trademarks of sarcasm and congeniality.

“I’m really comfortable just sitting in the room, cracking the mic and talking with the callers or putting out my points and getting to certain things that I want to touch on,” Arcand said. “….I think my style is one that you just sort of tune in and you’re hanging out with me for a couple of hours.”

Ultimately, Christian Arcand has made the move back to what he refers to as his radio home. As he concludes his first week back at WEEI, he is focused on producing the afternoon drive program and complimenting that with his solo show on Saturdays, the first of which will take place tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. Through all of his endeavors, he will talk about Boston sports with his listeners no matter the season, giving them a platform to engage with the hyperlocal coverage.

“Being back at WEEI is something that I’m really happy about,” Arcand expressed. “I was excited to get started, [and] now that I’m there, I’m excited to see where we can take this show.”

New Clients Have Your Best Clients Qualities

0

One of the best ways to find more of your best new clients is to look back at your old ones and find the similarities. And the differences. Go into the new year with a new approach to finding the best clients for YOU.

It’s time to design a client avatar. Once you do so, you will save a lot of time in prospecting and cut through the clutter of bad matches. And, no, this isn’t just a bunch of paperwork. Having a vivid picture of your ideal client and the written details about them will make it easier to find them and know in advance what kind of an initial offer to make to them-complimentary and for money-to bring them aboard.

According to leading small business CRM software company Keap, you may want to start by identifying who isn’t an ideal match for you. The clients who listened to the station were my best clients. So, that means they were sports fans and specifically sports fans of the local college. They were not the ideal prospect if they didn’t follow sports closely or the local college team. I considered them a decent prospect if they knew that others did and could admit that.

So, clients who didn’t listen to the station or follow sports passionately were no A-listers. Recognize that clients who sell to sports fans can come from almost any interest background.

Beyond targeting listeners and clients who target listeners, you may need to dig deeper. Try asking your clients what they like and why they buy. Tell them what you are doing, ask them yourself, or send them a survey. Better yet, work with another salesperson and interview each other’s clients who you know best.

You have to move out of your comfort zone for growth, which has a tangible reward at the end-more business! See if you can attach it to your invoices. Once you have a handle on their preferences, including which social media sites they use often, you can start targeting them on LinkedIn or Facebook. Get some white papers or case studies and post them to attract their attention to you. Create these avatars and give them a name, male or female, know their demographics and psychographics ( age, sex, location, values, lifestyle, etc.), and create a visual image for them.

Then, write down how this type of avatar would find out about advertising with you, what they would feel before running ads with you, and what they want to accomplish. This can be a great sales meeting idea for managers to do this as a group and go into 2023 with a clear vision of who you want to attract as clients.

Make sure you only create one avatar at a time and don’t just rely on your opinions- do the research. YOU are the best asset you have. Now find more people who are waiting for YOU!

FanDuel Hopes to Add Niche Sports to TV Lineup

0

FanDuel is considering adding niche sports to its live television lineup to hopefully spur wagering on “less-followed games and matches” according to a report from Bloomberg’s Gerry Smith.

FanDuel CCO Mike Raffensperger said the company is looking at “acquiring ‘under-loved sports’ and airing them on its newly rebranded FanDuel TV network.”

He added such an addition would allow viewers and bettors to “watch and bet on games from such leagues, which may have trouble reaching distribution agreements with traditional media companies.”

FanDuel TV and it’s streaming service FanDuel+ currently plan on airing more than 3,000 hours of live sports, with deals already in place to broadcast professional basketball games from Australia and China.

Steve Physioc Retiring, Jake Eisenberg Joining Kansas City Royals Radio Network

0

Jake Eisenberg is joining the Kansas City Royals Radio Network.

Eisenberg joins after spending the 2022 season working as a fill-in announcer for the New York Mets on WCBS 880 on an as-needed basis filling in for Howie Rose and Wayne Randazzo. Before working with the Mets, he spent two seasons calling games for the Omaha Storm Chasers, the AAA affiliate of the Royals. In addition to his baseball roles, Eisenberg has announced games for Wake Forest, Davidson, as well as the Big East Digital Network and the Atlantic 10 Conference.

“It’s an honor to be part of the broadcast team that shares the stories of this new, exciting era of Royals baseball while also getting to sit next to and learn from a Hall of Famer in Denny Matthews,” Eisenberg said. “Being in Omaha the last couple of seasons was a great education on how special this organization is and how bright this team’s future is. I am thrilled and grateful for this opportunity, and eager to get started serving Royals fans in Kansas City and beyond.”

The 27-year-old Eisenberg joins after the retirement of Steve Physioc, who has announced his retirement after 43 years announcing games for the Royals, Padres, Reds, and Angels, among others.

“We thank Phiz for his contributions the last 11 seasons and congratulate him on a tremendous career on the national and regional level, and we’re excited to welcome Jake to the Royals broadcast team,” said Bally Sports Kansas City General Manager and Senior Vice President Jack Donovan.

The Royals announced the move in a tweet Thursday, also saying Eisenberg would announce select games on Bally Sports Kansas City.

BMitch & Finlay: Amazon Has Larger NFL Aspirations Than Thursday Night Football

0

Much has been made about Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his potential interest in purchasing the Washington Commanders. Thursday on 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C., Brian Mitchell and J.P. Finlay said Amazon has bigger aspirations than just Thursday Night Football when it comes to broadcasting the NFL.

“Amazon — right now — has the Thursday Night package. NBC, FOX, and CBS do a good job carving up the Sunday package, and ESPN has the Monday Night Football,” JP Finaly said. “But would it shock you if Amazon has grander ambitions of being a larger broadcast partner with the NFL? Because it certainly wouldn’t shock me.”

“Not at all,” Mitchell replied.

“And you could argue — as much money as Jerry Jones, or David Tepper, or Robert Kraft, or Stan Kroenke — the companies (like) Comcast Universal, CBS, FOX, they have more,” Finlay said. “They are able to cut checks to the league because those broadcast rights are so valuable. So does Amazon want to be limited to a Thursday Night package and then the person synonymous with the brand becomes a team owner? Which in some capacity has to limit how much more they can broaden.

“Or do they want to position themselves as the next broadcast partner for the next 50 years? And maybe they get the AFC package or the NFC package or Sunday Night Football. Or Monday Night Football. Or they put together some massive deal together and get two-thirds of it or something. I just think that’s possible.”

Mitchell said he believes Bezos might have a leg up on the competition to secure ownership of the Commanders due to Amazon’s popularity.

“Jeff Bezos is gonna sit there, and he’s gonna look at the options and say ‘Ok, this guy is basically being forced out. He can’t get a damn stadium, so I’m not paying him for a stadium he don’t have.’

“And I think a lot of other people may look at it like that. ‘I come in — I already have a deal in Virginia — and everyone around here wants to deal with Amazon. I might be able to come in here and work out a deal, or I might be able to come in and build my own damn stadium. So why would I pay him for what I could build myself?’ Every one said $7.5 billion. It may not get up there.”

Joe Buck Believes FOX ‘Kind of Wanted’ Him and Troy Aikman to Depart

0

During an appearance on the SI Media Podcast, Monday Night Football broadcaster Joe Buck said he believes FOX wasn’t heartbroken to hear he and Troy Aikman were looking elsewhere.

While discussing the move, host Jimmy Traina said FOX was “dumb enough” to let Buck and Aikman leave, which Buck then said it seemed as if that was almost what the network wanted.

“You said Fox was ‘dumb enough’ earlier to let Troy and me leave,” Buck said. “I just think on some level, this is kind of what they wanted. I think when there was a crack in this relationship.”

“I think you’ve got new people in charge there, relatively. And I think it’s human nature to want to put your fingerprints and mold the broadcast — as the boss — the way you want to mold it. I was hired by David Hill and Ed Goren, and I go back to 1994 and Troy — people talk about how long I was there — Troy was at Fox for 21 years, and we both date back to a different regime.

“And so Eric Shanks has been the conduit from those days to now. But other people are in charge there as well, and they wanted a refresh. And they wanted a broadcast that reflected them a little bit and a fresh start.”

When asked if that sentiment was hurtful, Buck said he got what they were trying to do.

“I understand it. I think that’s human nature. It was kind of like, ‘You wanna go? Go’. We’ll live. We’ll do this the way we want to do it now. You’re the Hill/Goren guys’. And so I’m where I should be and I think ESPN was excited to bring those 20 years to their booth. And I think Fox was excited to start over and mold something different that didn’t involve me, and I’m good with that.”

Buck was also asked if ESPN ever discusses how they feel about the arrangement in its first year, and he shared that from ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro on down “the feedback has been just awesome, so you feel appreciated”.

Carmichael Dave: ‘Inside The NBA’ Did A Disservice to Sacramento With Poor Coverage

0

The Sacramento Kings picked up a win over the Brooklyn Nets on national television earlier this week, but the performance from the Inside The NBA crew on TNT was a sticking point for Sactown Sports morning host Carmichael Dave.

“I’ll give you a quick whine,” Carmichael Dave said. “You’ve seen athletes say I always give my all because there could be a kid in the crowd who’s seeing me for the first time — maybe the only time. Maybe their parents have been struggling and this might be the only time they can go to a game and watch me. I want to make sure I put forth the best effort possible so I leave the best impression possible on that kid.

“Well you know what? Last night the entire city of Sacramento were the kids and TNT were the ballplayers. Our parents have been struggling forever, we finally got a chance to go, and what happened? The athletes didn’t do their homework. I’m not talking about the play-by-play, I’m not talking about the color — Jared Greenberg, I thought, was great — I’m not talking about Ernie Johnson. I’m talking about Kenny (Smith), Charles (Barkley), and Shaq (O’Neal). Certainly, there were some moments. Charles said replace all the Lakers games on TNT with Kings games, I get it.

“But Kenny calling Terence Davis ‘Terrance Harris III’, repeatedly, there’s just a bunch of difference mistakes. They just wanted to glide over to focusing on the Nets. At one point Ernie said ‘Let’s focus on the Kings here. They’re the one doing the stuff. They’re the story here.’ I just wanted more out of Charles and Shaq.”

He later added Smith was drafted by the Kings and has defended the city and helped keep the franchise in Sacramento during potential relocation proceedings. Carmichael Dave said “he expected better” from the TNT analyst.
