Jeremy White: Manningcast Now About Teaching Football

0

The Manningcast welcomed several guests to last night’s alternate broadcast, and WGR morning host Jeremy White pointed out a slight shift in tone from the ESPN production that he enjoyed.

While discussing the guests on last night’s edition, White noted the appearance from Luke Bryan led to the Mannings teaching the game of football to both Bryan and the audience.

“I realized something along the way,” White said. Here’s Lamar. Handoff, option, mesh point plays, and every time there’s a play, Luke Bryan’s like ‘It’s an RPO, it’s an RPO, it’s an RPO’. And Eli says ‘Actually, Luke, that’s not an RPO’. And he explains the differences.”

White then said he appreciated how much the Mannings shared with the audience on how to tell if a play is a run-pass option or not.

“And I thought ‘Look at you guys teaching people watching this game’. All of the sudden it’s these teachable moments where you’re actually learning about the game. The idea that you can’t learn about the game with the Manningcast? Here’s Luke Bryan talking about an RPO like a million times before Eli stepped in.”

Astros-Phillies World Series Second Lowest Rated Ever

0

The recently concluded Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies World Series saw a slight drop in viewership compared to its 2021 counterpart. Unfortunately for MLB and FOX Sports, the dip landed it as the second lowest rated fall classic ever.

12.5 million fans watched the deciding Game 6 broadcast on Saturday on FOX. That number is impressive given the college football games it faced in primetime, including Clemson-Notre Dame and Alabama-LSU.

The average audience for this year’s World Series was 11.8 million, down 1% from 11.9 million a season ago. The 2020 World Series was the lowest rated in history, garnering just 9.8 million viewers for the series played during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Series averaged at 25.0 rating in Philadelphia, while Houston grabbed a 24.0 share. Austin, San Antonio, and San Diego rounded out the top five highest rated markets.

Gregg Giannotti: Twitter Truly Is ‘App For Sports’

0

There has been plenty of consternation surrounding the future of Twitter after its purchase by billionaire Elon Musk and his intentions to charge users a fee to be verified. WFAN morning host Gregg Giannotti said Tuesday that Twitter is truly the quintessential app for sports media and sports fans alike.

“For us, I remember talking to just a couple of music people this past weekend,” Giannotti said. “And they said ‘It’s interesting. All you sports guys use Twitter. You have a following on Twitter, but on Instagram you don’t have as much as a following, or on TikTok.’ Well that’s because Twitter really is the app for sports. Because it’s the live watching of sports, it’s the breaking news, it’s the reaction to it. It’s harder to do those things on Instagram or TikTok. So, for us, having the Twitter account has been a big part of what we do.”

“We’re not putting up selfie videos,” partner Boomer Esiason added. “I’m not showing you cleavage. You’re not doing that.”

“Showing cleavage?! What do you mean?!,” questioned Giannotti.

“You look at Instagram and all these different videos and TikTok and everything. This is body shaming era. You’re not gonna do that.”

The conversation began after a man with an apparent foot fetish had criticized Giannotti on Twitter. Giannotti mentioned earlier in the show that the television simulcast was utilizing a fill-in makeup artist, so he looked a little more pale than usual.

Kevin Harlan: Thursday Night Football ‘Little Different Swimming’ For Al Michaels

0

Much has been made about the seeming disdain Al Michaels has had for the recent Thursday Night Football schedule. Kevin Harlan has noticed that sentiment as well.

Appearing as a guest on The DA Show with Damon Amendolara on CBS Sports Radio, Harlan said he’s certain it’s been different for Michaels.

“It’s a little different swimming in those Thursday night waters than it is Sunday night, isn’t it? I think he’s finding that out,” said Harlan. “It’s been kind of an eye-opening experience for a guy that loves the limelight and a guy that deserves to be there as maybe the best TV voice in the history of the NFL.”

Harlan added he believes Michaels deserves better games than what the Thursday Night Football schedule has featured recently.

“Some of those matchups on Thursday have been pretty interesting, and I think Al has voiced his displeasure during those games. I’m sure he can’t believe what has happened. He deserves a better game.”

“Al has called the best game of the weekend for 35 years, then looked around and has to call P.J. Walker against Marcus Mariota on Thursday,” Amendolara laughed as he noted the upcoming Carolina Panthers/Atlanta Falcons Thursday Night Football matchup.

‘NFL GameDay Morning’ Crew Calling Seahawks vs Buccaneers From Munich

0

The NFL will play its first ever game in Germany this week as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face the Seattle Seahawks exclusively on NFL Network. The network has shared its NFL GameDay Morning crew will serve as the announcers for the broadcast.

Rich Eisen will serve as play-by-play announcer. He’ll be joined in the booth by Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, and longtime NFL head coach Steve Mariucci. Sara Walsh and Jamie Erdahl will work the sidelines.

In September, Eisen revealed he would announce games for NFL Network, but wasn’t at liberty to say which games he had been assigned to. “I love calling games,” Eisen told Jimmy Traina on the SI Media Podcast. Nothing like being at the stadium, nothing like being involved with a broadcast. I just dig it.”

Coverage will begin at 7:00 AM with NFL GameDay Kickoff from Munich. Colleen Wolfe, Willie McGinest, and Joe Thomas will work the show on site from Allianz Arena in Munich. The group will also provide halftime and postgame coverage of the event.

Kyle Brandt: Will Anyone On ESPN Have Anything Negative To Say About Jeff Saturday?

0

Jeff Saturday made the nearly unprecedented move from ESPN NFL analyst to NFL head coach yesterday after being hired as the interim head coach for the Indianapolis Colts. Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt had a problem with the hire, and had a larger point about potential coverage centered around Saturday from ESPN.

“This story is embarrassing. I’ve met Jeff Saturday a few times, and he was great, and I really respect him as a player and a media member. Isn’t he embarrassed to take this job? At best, uncomfortable?”

While making a larger point about the NFL’s lack of diversity in its head coaching positions, Brandt pointed out that the usual defense is “its not about the color of your skin, but your lack of experience or resume”. He pointed out that defense isn’t possible for Saturday.

“What do you say here? Because he’s a high school coach and he was on ESPN and screaming on Get Up? It’s an interesting media thing, too,” Brandt said. “Because this is an ESPN employee, and I’d be fascinated to hear if anybody on ESPN has something critical to say about Jeff Saturday in this case. Or is it just ‘Oh, we’re happy for Jeff’? If I’m the Colts, I’m embarrassed yesterday.”

Parkins & Spiegel Chastise Trent Dilfer For Not Name Dropping Them During Cowherd Apperance

0

Trent Dilfer makes weekly appearances on Parkins & Spiegel on 670 The Score in Chicago. Last week, Dilfer was a guest on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, and mentioned he “does a radio show out of Chicago” instead of saying “Parkins & Spiegel“. The hosts jokingly let Dilfer have it over the slight.

The segment usually begins with highlights of Dilfer’s greatest moments from his NFL playing days. Monday, the segment opened with lowlights, with commentary from his interceptions. In one instance, former CBS Sports NFL analyst Dan Dierdorf saying “it couldn’t be much easier to intercept this ball thrown by Trent Dilfer” and “Trent Dilfer never saw it coming”.

“You don’t say our name to Colin Cowherd. Oh ‘a radio out of Chicago’. Forgets us when he gets all big again,” Danny Parkins said to the former NFL quarterback. “I get it when he’s on Monday Night Football, but god, unbelievable.”

“I deserve all of that and more,” responded Dilfer, who had previously said the original opening of the segment was the best moment of his week.

“(If) you want your good intro back, Trent Dilfer, you owe us a Dan Patrick Show, a (Dan) Le Batard Show, a Cowherd show,'” Parkins shot back. “You owe us a ‘Parkins & Spiegel’ or at the very least a ‘The Score’. You owe us now.”

“I got Herd tomorrow and (Ryen) Russillo next week. I’ll make sure to shout you guys,” Dilfer promised.

“Then we can deliver back the good vibes we know you need,” concluded Matt Spiegel.

The Michael Kay Show Asks Trey Wingo About His Caesars Salary

0

The Michael Kay Show is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is welcoming its best guests to return to the airwaves throughout the month. Yesterday, former ESPN and current Caesers Sportsbook host Trey Wingo joined the program, and the show hounded him about how much money he makes from the company.

“This gentleman was one of our best guests, and then he decided to take the money and run,” Kay joked.

“And we need to know how much money he got,” Don La Greca said. “How much are you getting paid by Caesars?”

“Enough to buy all the gum in the world,” Wingo replied.

“Could you buy an MLS team?,” La Greca asked.

“No,” said Wingo succinctly.

Wingo was then asked if he made enough money to put together a group to purchase the Washington Commanders, which he replied Jay-Z and Jeff Bezos were already working on it.

“Well Michael said it was something outlandish and you were just swimming in money, and I was kind of curious to know exactly how much,” La Greca said.

“This is a guy that was born in a pool of money,” defended Kay. “He was born in Greenwich (Connecticut). His name is Treydavious (sic).”

“Alright, alright,” a dismissive Wingo replied.

The conversation took place after the show joked they should ambush Wingo by asking him how much he made from Caesars and if he didn’t answer the question, they would hang up on him for not telling the truth.

Scott Robbins: Elon Musk Twitter Takeover Has Liberals Melting Down

0

Some pundits weary of Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter are warning that the platform may be compromised as the midterm elections begin.

Syndicated radio personalities Jamie Markley, David van camp, and Scott Robbins discussed Monday what they see as a dramatic shift in how the mainstream media is talking about Twitter considering Musk’s decision to charge for blue check verification which has been delayed until the elections are over.

“Remember when you used to be able to trust Twitter?” van Camp quipped.

The trio reacted to NBC News reporter Ben Collins’ criticism of Twitter which includes him saying that Musk is overly concerned with charging for the blue badge after laying off half of his staff.

“Using Twitter as a trustworthy source for news on Tuesday is going to be a nightmare,” Collins stated. “That’s what some people who just got laid off and some people who are there are warned about.”

“Wait a minute, did he watch the video of the person going through a day’s work at Twitter?” Jamie Markley asked. “I think they can survive.”

“Elon Musk took over Twitter and liberals are melting down,” Robbins added. “One of his sticking points is that Elon wants to charge $8 a month for the little blue check verification badge on Twitter accounts.”

Julie Talbott to Receive The Jeff Smulyan Award at the 2023 BSM Summit

0

Each year at the BSM Summit, we take time to recognize some of the true difference makers in the sports media industry. It’s become a special part of the event, and it reminds everyone in the room of what’s possible if you do your job well and create impact.

Four awards in total are presented over the two-day event thanks to our friends at Premiere Networks. Each award has a different focus.

The Jeff Smulyan Award is presented to a radio industry executive who has led by example, taken risks, produced results, and made a significant difference for the sports radio business. The Mark Chernoff Award is given to sports radio’s top programmer. The Mike and the Mad Dog Award is presented to the top local sports radio show in America. And The Champions Award along with a financial contribution from BSM is given to an industry member who has used their platform to make a difference for others.

Since we began taking the Summit live in 2019, Mitch Rosen and Rick Radzik have been recognized as winners of the Mark Chernoff Award. Adam Schefter and the team of Keith Murphy and Andy Fales have been recipients of the Champions Award. And the top rated combination of Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti received the first ever Mike and the Mad Dog Award at the 2022 BSM Summit in NYC.

Which brings us to the Jeff Smulyan Award.

A number of top notch executives have joined us to accept this honor over the years. It started in Los Angeles with Kraig Kitchin, continued in New York City with Dan Mason, and then Traug Keller took home the honor during our last show, which also took place in the big apple.

As we looked to 2023, the goal was to identify someone who’s been active in growing their company’s footprint across the sports radio industry. Equally important was someone who has the full confidence and trust of their people, a track record of delivering results, and has uncovered new business opportunities to lead their company forward.

After a brief conversation, Jeff and I knew exactly who the right person was.

It is my honor to announce and congratulate Julie Talbott, President of Premiere Networks on being named our recipient of the 2023 Jeff Smulyan Award. Julie will be present in Los Angeles at the Founders Club at the Galen Center at USC to accept the honor at the 2023 BSM Summit on March 21-22, 2023.

“I’m humbled and honored to receive this award – especially with Jeff Smulyan’s name associated with it. I’ve been a fan of his throughout the years” shared Julie Talbott. “Premiere Networks and FOX Sports Radio are dedicated to delivering the best multiplatform sports audio content the industry has to offer, and this award truly recognizes the amazing efforts of our entire team, who I couldn’t be more proud of.  Thanks to Jason Barrett and BSM for this incredible honor.”

“I have known Julie for many, many years and our industry doesn’t have a better ambassador than her” added Jeff Smulyan. “She has worked tirelessly to build Premiere into a remarkable enterprise and she has made legions of friends and admirers along the way. She is so deserving of this award and I couldn’t be happier that my friend, Julie Talbott is the winner of the 2023 Jeff Smulyan Award. Nothing makes me happier than to present it to her this March at USC!”

“FOX Sports Radio’s growth under Julie’s watchful eye has been impressive, but when combined with Premiere’s performance and reach, and seizing opportunities in the digital space by launching strong brands such as The Volume, in partnership with Colin Cowherd, you start to see how she’s put her magical touch on the industry,” explained BSM President Jason Barrett. “The best leaders are the ones who empower their people, work with their talent, and study situations to determine where room for growth exists, and few have the respect, trust, and confidence of their people better than Julie Talbott.”
