Rob Parker: JJ Redick Shows New Media Is Code for Athletes Covering for Each Other

Rob Parker isn’t a fan of new media because it isn’t about athletes telling the truth, it’s about athletes protecting other athletes.

In a piece for Deadspin, Parker says he saw the most recent example of new media doing just that on Wednesday courtesy of JJ Redick. Redick appeared on First Take on ESPN and offered a different way to approach the Los Angeles Lakers loss to the Golden State Warriors.

“We should treat (the Lakers) season as a celebration of LeBron’s individual greatness… Spending all day, every day talking about their deficiencies, that’s not great. We know who this team is.”

Parker said that comment is “Exhibit A why you can’t trust most former athletes to tell you the truth.” He also recommended Redick “should have quit his job on the spot and walked off the set.”

“In other words, Redick said he doesn’t want to do his job — analyze games,” Parker wrote. “He’s supposed to tell fans at home what happened, and what can be done to correct things moving forward. It was mind-boggling.”

Parker also said that the new media does offer insight only procured by their experience, but if one is looking for objective truth and analysis, people shouldn’t look to them.

“For sure, they have insight into their games that trained sportswriters don’t have. They’ve been out there; reporters haven’t. There’s simply no argument. Still, most of the time, you will always get a more honest take or opinion about what’s going on from a reporter or writer.”

Parker wrote that he isn’t talking about Redick bashing his sport or its participants.

“It’s not about ripping people just to rip people. It’s about an honest take on the game.”

Roy Wood Jr: Daily Show ‘Gonna Be Fine’ Without Trevor Noah

After Trevor Noah’s, the face most associate with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in recent years has belonged to Roy Wood Jr. The comedian has served as a correspondent for the show since 2015, when Jon Stewart still served as the host.

Wood is considered a possible replacement for Noah, who will exit the show in December. He told E! News earlier this week that if he is offered the job, he would be foolish to say no.

He added that he does not know if that offer is coming and likely won’t know until January.

“The question nobody is asking is, ‘If you’re not hosting, are you still staying?’ Hell yeah. It’s a great job,” Wood added. “I get an opportunity to tell stories that we normally wouldn’t get to tell. I think the dope thing about The Daily Show is we have correspondents, and they operate as these extensions of the show. A lot of shows don’t have that.”

Roy Wood Jr. added that he is happy to see Noah pursue opportunities he is excited about and added that he isn’t worried about what the show will or won’t be without Noah when he does leave.

“A friend of mine told me a long time ago, ‘We don’t own these jobs, we lease them.’ So it’s all temporary. Whether it’s Kilborn or Jon or Trevor, whatever the next iteration of The Daily Show is gonna be fine and we’re going to keep whoopin’ their ass and pointing out the bullshit. Nothing’s going to change.”

Michael Irvin Recalls Sealing His ESPN Deal With a Super Bowl Rings Stunt

Michael Irvin may not have had the chance to spike the ball in an interview with ESPN, but he did do the next best thing.

Irvin recalled the timing that led up to his eventual signing with ESPN with The New York Post. There he said that his deal was coming up with FOX Sports Net’s Best Damn Sports Show Period and he wanted to transition from that daily show to a weekend NFL studio show so that he’d have more time free to pursue other opportunities.

“Best Damn Sports Show was a great show at the time,” Irvin said, “…the plan was always to get back to a weekend show, and ESPN gave me that opportunity with Chris Berman and Tom Jackson, who were the catalysts, the lead horse, in the race at the time. It was certainly a vertical move for me. ESPN is the 800-pound gorilla.”

Irvin said that he may have sealed the deal at the end of his interview with the network.

“My deal was coming up. ESPN called me,” he said. “I’ll never forget. It was right after the Bucs won the Super Bowl. Keyshawn Johnson called out Sterling Sharpe [over his lack of rings]. When they brought me in to interview, as I was leaving I looked at them and said, ‘Hey one last thing: you will never have to worry about someone calling us out saying we don’t have any rings again’ — and then I threw all of mine on the table like they were dice and walked out.”

It doesn’t matter how famous you are. Everyone has someone that turns them into a fanboy. For Howard Stern, that person may be Bruce Springsteen.

The Boss will come to New York later this month to make his first-ever appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Stern couldn’t be more excited.

“This is so f***ing great,” Stern said. “He’s gonna bring his guitar, we’re going to sit, we’re going to talk, it’s going to be very nice.”

Back in 2019, Howard Stern called Bruce Springsteen a “dream guest” in a conversation with Rolling Stone. Now that the dream is on the verge of coming true, he doesn’t plan to leave any stone unturned.

“I think I’m up to 500 questions now,” he said. “Bruce better bring a tent and camp out.”

Bruce Springsteen has two projects to promote. He has a new album with the E Street Band due out next month called Only the Strong Survive. The band is also getting ready to hit the road next year for a world tour.

Chris Russo: ESPN Was Not Happy I Told Howard Stern My First Take Salary

Back in June, Howard Stern welcomed Chris Russo to his SiriusXM show. During the interview, the King of All Media got Mad Dog to reveal what his arrangement is with ESPN to make appearances on First Take each week.

Russo told Stern that he gets $10,000 per appearance. This week, he revealed to Jimmy Traina that ESPN was not happy he made the number public.

“I’ll probably get my wrist slapped again,” Russo said on the SI Media Podcast. “Somebody from ESPN sent a text to my agent with two words: ‘Not helpful.’ I never said that before. That will get me in trouble, too, but what the hell? It’s your show, nobody listens.”

In defense of Chris Russo, he and Stern have known each other for a long time. He made a startegic decision about what kind of headlines he was willing to make on the show.

“If you go on with Howard, he puts you on for an hour and 15 minutes, you gotta give him something. I’m not gonna go break down my sex life or anything like that. I gotta give him something that’s meaty, and that is meaty. He loves that stuff. That’s why I did it.”

The current arrangement between Russo and ESPN calls for 40 appearances on First Take. Will there be more appearances after episode 40? He says those discussions have not yet taken place.

Despite regularly ending up in heated arguments with athletes and other younger debators, Chris Russo did not miss a beat when Traina asked if he would want to do more with ESPN in the future.

“Why would I not? I love Stephen A. Outside of the commute, which is difficult, what’s there not to like?”

Greg Hill Celebrates Marconi Victory On WEEI Morning Show

No rest for the best in Boston! Greg Hill was back on WEEI first thing Thursday morning after taking home the Marconi Award for Major Market Personality of the Year the night before.

He was not in the Boston studios though. He joined his co-hosts remotely from a WFAN studio in New York.

Hill acknowledged that he blew past the allotted 37 seconds for his speech. He told colleagues Jermaine Wiggins, Courtney Cox, and Chris Curtis that it was to make sure they were recognized too.

“I’m sure there is audio of the speech. I did thank each and every one of you. I didn’t even thank my kids. I thanked you guys. This radio award does belong to you and all of you guys and everybody I have ever worked with in my 33 years or whatever. I do include LB in that, Danielle, Hsu, Spazz, everybody.”

That last group was the cast of The Hillman Show on WAAF, the former active rock station where Greg Hill spent 28 years before taking over the morning show on WEEI in the summer of 2019.

“I’ve been fortunate because most of the people I have ever had the pleasure of working with in radio have been way more talented than me,” he added.

What is Hill’s future at WEEI? He joked that after his acceptance speech, it may not be very bright.

“I was trying to thank the president of our company and I, unfortunately, Courtney, you’ll appreciate this, mispronounced her last name. So that probably doesn’t bode well for me.”

Later in the show, Curtis jokingly asked if Hill if he received dirty looks from Felger & Mazz. The afternoon show on crosstown rival 98.5 The Sports Hub was also nominated for the Major Market Personality of the Year award.

Greg Hill answered that he did not see the duo on Wednesday night. He had nothing but kind things to say about them though.

“They are legends, and honestly, I didn’t see it or hear it, but I was told Mike Felger had some really nice things to say yesterday. They were in the category. Have they won? They’ve won Major Market Personality of the Year and they deserve it again.”

Stephen A. Smith Alternate NBA Broadcast Coming To ESPN October 26

Alternative broadcasts are all the rage in sports, particularly at ESPN, which has launched several in the wake of the Manningcast’s success. The latest will focus on the NBA and feature the network’s brightest star, Stephen A. Smith.

Four editions of The NBA in Stephen A’s World are on the schedule for 2022. The first one is set for October 26 when the Milwaukee Bucks host the Brooklyn Nets on both ESPN2 and ESPN+. Other episodes will air November 2, December 2, and Christmas Day.

Like other ESPN alternate broadcasts, Stephen A. Smith will welcome celebrity guests to watch and talk about the game with him. He told Variety that fans should expect a very loose atmosphere and conversation.

The NBA in Stephen A’s World is co-produced by SAS Productions (owned by Smith) and Omaha Productions, Peyton Manning’s company, which has produced alternate broadcasts of the US Open and college football as well as the Manningcast for ESPN. Smith says that doesn’t mean his show will follow the format of previous Omaha ventures.

“I don’t think that anybody who has watched those shows should anticipate that they will see me doing anything remotely like them when it comes to how I watch a game,” he said.

One key difference is that Smith doesn’t want to stray too far from basketball. The NBA wasn’t on Omaha’s radar when the company and ESPN reached a deal to produce the variety of megacast content they will offer. ESPN brass went to Smith and Omaha with the idea. Stephen A. Smith says that gave him the power to shape what the broadcast will be.

“You’ll see people who are fans of the sport who are relatively popular coming in to talk about the sport. That’s what it will be about.”

The future of the The NBA in Stephen A’s World is up in the air after Christmas. ESPN and Omaha will evaluate the 2023 calendar to see if and when it could commit to future editions of the alternate broadcast.

Eric Shanks: FOX Doesn’t Need To Get Into Streaming Game Right Now

Don’t expect to see FOX get into the streaming game anytime soon. Eric Shanks isn’t ruling out a direct-to-consumer platform in the future, but the FOX Sports CEO and Executive Producer says the company isn’t in a rush to chase trends.

“It’s kind of like they’re on the green putting, and we’re getting to read their putts on their dime and figure out where that world is going to go without having to put in the sunken costs, probably, that they are,” he said during last week’s CAA World Congress of Sports in New York.

No FOX streaming platform has left one of the company’s marquee events in a very interesting position. The only option for American fans that want to stream World Cup matches next month will be Peacock, which will carry the games in Spanish but not in English.

If the company were to reverse course, it certainly has the live game rights to make an impact in the market. Its deals with the Big Ten, FIFA, Major League Baseball, and the NFL would make its DTC platform a must-have for sports fans.

Shanks says that FOX views the streaming world as a crowded marketplace. He wonders if the growing number of options and rising costs for sports fans will have their tastes swinging back to traditional television.

“We all know there’s too many direct-to-consumer products out there,” he said. “I still feel like at some point there’s going to be definitely a slowing [of streaming services], and maybe I’m so optimistic that I think that people will end up seeing the great value in those pay-TV bundles to come back to it.”

Trevor Noah: Partisan Media Has Separated Us Into 2 Different Worlds

Trevor Noah is in his final days at Comedy Central. The host of The Daily Show will leave his current role to pursue other projects, including more stand up comedy tours and producing a new docuseries.

On Wednesday night, he sat down with MSNBC’s Alex Wagner to discuss the media world he is leaving behind. 

Noah did not sound hopeful when discussing the state of the media and its effect on the public. He said partisan media has changed the way Americans consume news and that has had a palpable impact on society.

“It’s just going to become worse because we don’t live in the same world anymore. You know? We would all meet in one place, whether it was for the news. People would watch, whether it was Walter Cronkite or whoever it was, people would watch the same news and then argue about it.”

While the vast array of entertainment options in the world is often cited as a good thing, Trevor Noah views it as part of the larger societal fracture. He reminisced about watching Murder, She Wrote with his mother in South Africa and wondered if there are shows families or friends watch together anymore. He also noted that when he gets on the subway, he knows everyone is listening to or reading something different. They could be consuming completely different and opposing information about the very same subject.

“I think what that’s done is it’s created a hyper-individualistic society where we don’t realize we aren’t living in the same world and you can’t agree on anything if you don’t agree on the same world,” he said.

Trevor Noah will host his final episode of The Daily Show on December 8. A report from Deadline says that Comedy Central may take a very different approach to the show and switch from a single-host format to panels of comedians leading the entire show.

Dana Loesch Questions FBI’s Raid of Ex-ABC News Producer

Conservative pundit Dana Loesch raised questions Wednesday regarding a federal raid carried out at the house of a former ABC News producer. 

According to Rolling Stone, FBI agents raided James Meeks’ Arlington, Virginia apartment in April. Friends tell the magazine they have not seen him since. 

“This is kind of nutty, what is happening here?” Loesch said. “Whatever happened to the sanctity of the free press?” 

Loesch noted how Meek was writing a book that detailed President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. The report cited “sources familiar with the matter” as saying that federal agents found classified information on Meek’s laptop computer.

“Is Biden using Clinton techniques?” Loesch asked. “This is just wild.” 

Meek’s whereabouts are unknown. Before working for ABC News, he also covered national security for the New York Daily News.

“I’ve got questions because the FBI is involved,” she added. “I think it’s just normal to ask questions especially when the FBI is involved. He has not at all been charged, he abruptly resigned [from ABC News] and nobody has seen him since.”
