Kenny Smith: Charles Barkley Got Paid And Doesn’t Know Who People Play For

0

In the first edition of Inside the NBA for the 2022-23 season, the show was exactly as left it last year: making fun of Charles Barkley.

The show has created an annual segment called “Who He Play For” in which Barkley is challenged to name the new homes of current NBA players. Barkley, as expected, hasn’t exactly memorized all the of NBA rosters yet.

Barkley missed all five of his tried which prompted fellow analyst Kenny Smith to chime in a solid reference to Barkley’s latest contract and his astute analysis.

“A guy just got paid a lot of money and he doesn’t know who people play for.”

It wasn’t the only reference to Barkley’s new contract on the broadcast. Shaq called him “Chuckie 200” while Ernie Johnson said that Barkley was sweating because he was carrying a heavy wallet.

Matthew Berry: Chris Berman Didn’t Want Fantasy Football on Shows He Was Hosting

0

Fantasy football is a massively popular subject with a lot of people, Chris Berman just isn’t one of them.

That revelation came from Matthew Berry who mentioned that Berman didn’t see the fit for Berry’s expertise and the ESPN mainstay on NFL programming.

“I think he was reticent when I joined the company,” Berry said of Berman on the podcast  House of Strauss hosted by Ethan Sherwood Strauss.

“Not specific to me. But I just think he didn’t feel like fantasy had a place on Sunday NFL Countdown or Monday Night Countdown, on the shows that he was hosting,” Berry would go on to say.

Despite Berman’s hesitance to accept fantasy football on those shows, Berry would say that didn’t alter the two’s relationship and in fact, it’s strong and ongoing today.

“On a personal level, he has been nothing but lovely to me,” Berry said. “I love the man and I would never say a bad thing about him. Really enjoy him, we text to this day because he likes betting. While he personally doesn’t play fantasy – although randomly, he plays fantasy golf…he understands the importance of [fantasy football]. His kids play, he knows that fans care about it. And by the way, in 2007, who am I? Chris Berman built that place, he built NFL Primetime, he build Sunday NFL CountdownMonday Night Countdown, who am I, some dumb kid, to say what should or should not be on those shows?”

Joe Shasky: Chris Mullen Is 1st Person On TV To Say Warriors’ Fight Is A Problem

0

A brand new NBA season tipped off on Tuesday night. The Golden State Warriors hosted the Los Angeles Lakers in the late game. What should have been a night of celebration was overshadowed by the fight earlier this month in practice between Jordan Poole and Draymond Green. Joe Shasky said Wednesday morning that it will be a story all year long.

He criticized TNT’s national broadcast for the way they talked about the fight. He said a fight between teammate in practice was treated like something that happens regularly.

That is not what Chris Mullen had to say on the NBC Sports Bay Area broadcast. Shasky found it refreshing that someone acknowledged the fanbase’s fear.

“Mullen gives you authentic,” he told his co-host Bonta Hill on 95.7 The Game’s Morning Roast. “There is no broadcaster BS when I hear him and he basically said ‘Does it happen? Yes. It’s few and far between,’ and I’m paraphrasing here ‘but it’s always a negative.’ And he’s the first person I’ve heard say that. People are trying to spin this into a positive. Bonta, it’s always a negative thing for everyone involved. That resonated with me.”

He said that the tension amongst the Warriors is clear right now even to the people watching at home. Hill, who was in the arena for the game, said that no fans booed Draymond Green when he received his championship ring, but his ovation was dwarfed by the ones many other players got.

Joe Shasky said this is the kind of thing that will happen all year. People are going to want to know what is happening in every huddle. They are going to overanalyze every player’s social media. It is a story that isn’t going away, particularly when the Warriors go on the road.

“For me, I just think that we’re doing too much trying to analyze reactions and people dapping each other up, but you’re right. B, it’s not gonna go away.”

New York Times White House Reporter: ‘We Cover Every President Exactly The Same’

0

Peter Baker fundamentally rejects the idea that the press gives more favorable coverage to Joe Biden than it did to Donald Trump when he was in the White House. According to the New York Times’ Chief White House Correspondent, the approach isn’t what changes. The person in the Oval Office does.

“I think we cover every president exactly the same,” he said this week on CSPAN’s Washington Journal. “What we see is what’s in front of us. Joe Biden is different than Donald Trump. Donald Trump is different than Barack Obama. Barack Obama is different than George W. Bush.”

He added that readers and viewers should not want anything different. That wouldn’t be honest coverage.

“You don’t want the press to create a false equivalency where every president is exactly the same in order to create some sort of fairness. No, you report what you see. You report what your sources tell you. You report the facts that you gather.”

A poll released by Gallup earlier this week showed a near record number of Americans have no faith at all in the media. It’s a sentiment that Donald Trump has echoed since he first entered politics. Baker dismissed the accusations of unfairness from the White House as misguided strategy.

“I think that Donald Trump wanted us to be his opponent because it was convenient,” he said. “He wanted to make us the opposition party and it is our job as journalists not to fall into that trap.”

Tony Massarotti: Success of Felger & Mazz Has A Lot To Do With Timing

1

Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti have been on the air for 13 years on 98.5 The Sports Hub. The two of them pride themselves on trying to give listeners the perspective of the beat reporter while also examining how fans feel.

Massarotti was a guest on the latest episode of the Takin A Walk podcast with Buzz Knight and he said one of the goals of the show is to examine why fans might feel a certain way about an issue in Boston sports and that he and Felger can give great insight on a situation based on their past experiences as beat reporters.

“One of the things we really try to examine on the show, and Mike is excellent at this, is sort of the feeling of things and what the genesis of those emotions is and the conflict that exists both in terms of what’s inside any fan and what’s inside any organization. He and I were both beat reporters for a really long time and I think what that does is give you insight into how a sports team works and what types of stuff goes on inside the wall, whether it be at Gillette Stadium or Fenway Park because there’s a lot of politicking and angling and conflict and resolution that goes on that most fans aren’t privy to and we both were.”

Felger and Massarotti have seen a whole lot of winning in Boston since their show began and Massarotti knows that timing has been key to the show’s success because of the fans’ interest in talking about winning teams.

“Felger and I have talked about this a million times. Boston had not won a championship in a long time before the Patriots won in 2001, Mike was on the Patriots beat at the right time. Then, the Red Sox won and I was on the Red Sox beat at the right time. There is a certain amount of timing in these things that nobody really can control, right? As much as we like to think we do a good show, people have to care.”

This year, Massarotti got the chance to be in the booth as a color commentator for some Boston Red Sox games on NESN. It was an opportunity that even surprised him, but he told Knight he enjoyed being back at the ballpark again since his days as a Red Sox beat reporter.

“It kind of came out of nowhere. I was surprised, I did not see it coming. My relationship with the Red Sox over the years has been, as you expect, hot and cold. Along the way, there were times when the relationship was tense and still are. Obviously, they own NESN. They have a say in who does their games. I was both floored and impressed. I give them a lot of credit for being willing to entertain it. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s been a fun year. Where it’s leading, I have no idea.”

MLB Network Adds Stephen Vogt as Guest Analyst For LCS Coverage

0

His playing career came to an end in storybook fashion last month and it seems like Stephen Vogt is already testing the waters for his next chapter. The two-time all-star has been added to MLB Network’s coverage of the American and National League Championship Series this week.

Wednesday and Thursday nights, Vogt will be on MLB Tonight. On Friday, he will be on MLB Central.

Stephen Vogt played in ten Major League Baseball seasons. He spent time with the Rays, Brewers, Diamondbacks, and Braves. He had two stints with the Oakland A’s, including the 2022 season, which will be his last as a player.

MLB Network loves to experiment with new faces once the playoffs arrive. During the Division Series, Marlins all-star second baseman Jazz Chisolm Jr. served as a guest analyst on studio programming.

Pedro Martinez: ‘I Have A Lot To Learn To Be Like Charles Barkley’

0

Charles Barkley and the rest of the Inside the NBA crew have new contracts from Warner Bros. Discovery. Chuck’s in particular is said to be very lucrative. Certainly it is the kind of thing that raised the eyebrows of other Turner Sports personalities. Pedro Martinez said the money would be nice, but he is not on that level yet.

“Chuck is a special breed, you know? Chuck is a special breed,” he said on the latest edition of the Marchand and Ourand podcast. “I hope someday I can be like him, but I still have a lot to learn.”

Turner Sports would certainly like to see an analyst for all of the sports they cover emerge as a Barkley-like figure – someone who is brutally honest and funny while also being highly educated about the game.

Pedro Martinez seemed like a safe bet to fit that description in the baseball world. He admitted that there were some similarities between he and Charles Barkley in the way they dealt with the media during their playing days.

“I never was able to hide my thoughts, my feelings to whatever situation there was,” he said. “There were some misunderstandings. I don’t think anyone ever imagined that I was the person I was when I took the uniform off, because on my days to pitch, I did not want to have friends. I did not want to talk to anybody. I was just just a team player and I wanted to protect my players and I wanted to do whatever it took to beat the opposition.”

Martinez described himself as “a geek” in all matters of baseball. He finds every aspect of the game fascinating and is grateful to have the opportunity to earn a living talking about the game. He thinks that is possible because even the reporters and fans that may not have loved him during his playing days recognized that he never mislead them.

“When you’re really honest and you speak your mind and you’re gonna say what you’re gonna say, even when you call the Yankees your daddy, I think the media loves it. I think the media appreciates an honest answer and I always gave an honest answer and a true answer. I would not hide from answering whatever question you have.”

Tucker Carlson: Elon Musk Buying Twitter Is ‘A True Existential Threat’ To People in Charge

0

Tucker Carlson said Tuesday night that he has a source that says Elon Musk expects to close on his purchase of Twitter within two weeks. It is a story we have heard for months, and after multiple public threats back and forth, all signs seem to indicate that the Tesla founder will indeed take over the microblogging platform.

On his FOX News Show Tuesday night, Carlson noted how the media has changed its tune on Musk since he first made a serious offer for Twitter.

“Elon Musk purchasing Twitter is more than just a potential change to the media landscape,” he said. “It is a true existential threat to the hygeminy of the people currently in charge. Allowing the freedom of speech means the possibility of a revolution from below against the forces destroying this country and the West.”

He noted that since April, when Twitter’s board voted to accept Musk’s exorbitant takeover offer, Musk has been labeled a racist, he has been accused of underpaying for the company, and The Washington Post has called for him not to remove Twitter’s current content moderation practices.

“Of course ‘content moderation’ is another term for ‘censorship’. Who does censorship help? Always and everywhere the powerful,” Carlson said. “Who does it hurt? The weak because words are all they have. Take the ability to say what they think away from them and they have no power at all.”

Tucker Carlson says he does not know Elon Musk. He admitted that he isn’t here to “carry water” for Elon Musk. He is interested in the reaction simply because it is about trying to control the freedom of speech.

He noted that Elon Musk understands the power of words. So does the media. That is why Carlson says left-leaning outlets have abandoned someone he claims they once praised as a hero.

“He was the electric car guy, remember? They don’t even mention his electric cars anymore because he’s doing the one thing you’re not allowed to do, which is giving voice to people.”

Chiney Ogwumike To Add NBA Duties With New ESPN Contract

0

Chiney Ogwumike has had a unique journey at ESPN. The two-time WNBA all-star is still an active member of the Los Angeles Sparks, but she has made time to stay active with the network. Apparently both sides are happy with the arrangement. She tweeted on Tuesday that she had a new contract in Bristol.

Ogwumike is already a regular presence on ESPN’s NBA studio programming. In addition to NBA Today and NBA Countdown, viewers will soon see her at the broadcast table. She told Variety that she will be an analyst for select NBA games on the network this season.

“We don’t have many women analysts outside of Doris Burke calling NBA games on linear TV,” she said. “That’s the next challenge for me. I’ve called women’s basketball games. I know how to call a basketball game, but I like to make sure to master my craft before I jump into another one.”

ESPN has only had Chiney Ogwumike on its roster since 2016. In that short amount of time, they have already given the WNBA star a variety of different experiences, including briefly hosting a nationally syndicated radio show with Mike Golic Jr. She eventually gave that up to return to the WNBA.

“Chiney is an exceptional talent who continues to raise the bar of what a professional athlete and high-level broadcaster can be in simultaneous fashion,” David Roberts, ESPN’s head of NBA and studio production, told Variety. “We have the utmost confidence in Chiney and we’re proud of her continued evolution as an analyst and host.”
