Andrew Cuomo To Launch New Podcast on Thursday

Andrew Cuomo is making a comeback. The former New York Governor is joining the very crowded podcast space. His new show launches on Thursday.

The show is called As a Matter of Fact. It will be available on Quake, a subscription-based podcast platform that already includes shows hosted by Mike Huckabee, Soledad O’Brien, Laura Ingraham, Pete Rose, and others.

Cuomo told Axios that the show will focus on real news as opposed to spin.

“There’s a fundamental problem with the entire system here,” the former governor said. “We have such division of people and we have such dysfunction of government, and part of it is this hyper-partisan, extreme dialogue that goes on.”

As a Matter of Fact is the first major venture for Andrew Cuomo since leaving Albany amid a sexual harassment scandal. He says that being out of public service will benefit the show and its listeners.

“Not only can I tell the unvarnished truth, but I can tell the unvarnished truth without any worry about any ramifications to my ability to do my job, you know? So that I’m enjoying.”

Cuomo says the show will feature interviews and his take on hot-button topics like the FBI raid of Mar a Lago, gun control, and abortion rights. He will also welcome listener interaction. The first two episodes will be free. After that, listeners will have to subscribe to Quake to hear more.

CBS Draws 50 Million Viewers for CFB-NFL Weekend

CBS Sports could not have asked for a better football slate of games last weekend and the ratings showed it.

CBS grabbed a combined viewership of 50.418 million viewers for the three-game slate offered by the network.

On Saturday, CBS drew an average of 11.557 million viewers for the Alabama-Tennessee game. At the end of the game, the game peaked at 17 million viewers. That gave the network the most-watched college football game for the fifth straight week.

On Sunday, the network drew 13.454 million viewers for the early afternoon window, regional coverage featuring the Ravens-Giants game. Then, in the late-afternoon window, CBS also aired Buffalo-Kansas City and drew an average of 25.407 million viewers, the most-watched Week 6 NFL on CBS game in 15 years.

Amazon Prime Video Will Broadcast a Black Friday Game in 2023

On Tuesday, the NFL and Amazon announced that next season, the league will feature its first-ever “Black Friday” game and Amazon will be the service to bring it to the fans.

Ian Rapoport tweets the details, including the time of the kickoff. The game will happen on Friday, November 24 in 2023 and will kick off at 3p ET. The teams are to be determined. Also, Amazon not only will stream the service, they will have exclusive rights to that game.

Charles Barkley: ‘Probably Zero Chance’ I Stay At TNT Till End of New Contract

A new NBA season begins on Tuesday night. It is perfect timing for TNT, who just signed the entire Inside the NBA crew to new contracts. That includes Charles Barkley, who could get well over $100,000,000 if he were to stay for the entire ten years of his new deal, but that probably isn’t going to be what happens.

“There’s probably zero chance I’m gonna stay for the entire ten years,” he told Dan Patrick.

During negotiations, Barkley says he was upfront with Warner Bros. Discovery. He does not want to work until the day he dies. He says the network was adamant that it needs him on TNT for at least the next three seasons.

Patrick asked how much the flirtations with LIV Golf effected his paycheck. Charles Barkley said that they were not a factor at all. The bigger motivation for TNT’s generosity was the network’s desire to continue its relationship with the NBA.

“TNT asked me like ‘We need something from you. Would you give us something?’ and I said ‘What do you want?’ They said ‘We need you to stay longer. We can’t lose you and bid on the NBA.’”

Barkley says he was given the impression that the league will open negotiations for new media rights deals very soon.

He added that he was more motivated by helping out a company that had been so good to him than he was by the paycheck, joking that after a long NBA career and an already successful broadcasting career he “would be stupid” not to already have enough money.

Patrick joked that Charles Barkley is such a bad gambler that his fortunes could change at any moment. The Hall of Famer fired back with “When I renegotiate my deals to do commercials, I factor in gambling losses.”

CNN Refutes Claim It Lowered Audio During Kari Lake Interview

CNN has refuted a claim by gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R-AZ) that it lowered her audio during an interview Sunday morning.

Lake was pressed by CNN’s Dana Bash about whether she would accept the results of the upcoming election, which is viewed as one of the more tightly contested in the nation.

When asked if she would accept the results of the election, Lake was noncommittal.

“I’m going to win the election and I will accept that result,” the candidate said.

“If you lose, will you accept that?” Bash asked.

“I’m going to win the election and accept that result,” Lake reiterated. “The people will never support and vote for a coward like Katie Hobbs.”

In a tweet, Lake said “For some reason, CNN turned-down my audio on several occasions as I was speaking”, but said she was recording her own audio and posted the video to her Rumble account.

CNN’s public relations account responded with a link to the interview, saying “As you can see, there were no audio issues”.

Mark Levin: Jim Bohannon Is The ‘Number One Gentleman of Talk Radio’

Rich Valdes began hosting his new show Monday, taking over for the legendary Jim Bohannon who ended his illustrious radio career last week. For his first guest, Valdes welcomed conservative talk host Mark Levin to the program, and Levin only had praise for both Valdes and Bohannon.

“Jim Bohannon is a legend. He’s also the number one gentleman of talk radio. His absence from radio will be deeply felt. But there is no better person to assume that slot than my dear friend and colleague, Richie Valdes. Richie V, aka Mr. Call Screener. He has been a fill-in host for me and is superb. He is compelling, entertaining, smart, and an unapologetic patriot. I could not be happier for him and, even more, the great radio audience.”

In addition to his work with Levin, Valdes also hosted shows on 77WABC in New York and 1210 WPHT in Philadelphia.

During his retirement show, Bohannon — who is entering hospice care for an undisclosed ailment — said Valdes can be a great host.

“You have a track record, people have heard you and you’ve got the goods and the talent,” Bohannon said. “You have the ability to do the job.”

VSiN Adds 97.1 The Freak In Dallas And Radio 95.1 in Rochester

Sports betting content continues to be a priority on talk radio brands across the country. That is helping VSiN grow its reach. The sports betting radio network has added two new affiliates – 97.1 The Freak in Dallas and Radio 95.1 in Rochester.

The Freak, which recently transitioned from classic rock to a talk format blending sports and pop-culture, will carry VSiN shows on the weekends. Dallas will hear four hours of sports gambling talk on Saturdays and five hours worth on Sundays.

Radio 95.1 will bring sports gambling content to the weekends in Upstate New York as well. That station’s relationship with VSiN will be a little deeper though. WAIO will also carry VSiN in the overnight hours on weekdays. The station will also carry Countdown to Kickoff with Brent Musburger every Sunday at noon.

As its listener base grows, VSiN is adding new employees too. Serial digital entrepreneur Jordan Nilsen becomes the network’s Head of Digital Strategy and veteran creative director James Coleman is the new Director of Creative Services.

“We are proud to have achieved the kind of industry leadership that can attract top caliber talent like Jordan and James,” Brian Musburger, founder and CEO of VSiN, said in a press release. “VSiN’s commitment to delivering superior real-time sports betting analysis and insights over the past five years, has helped establish the network as the leading voice in sports betting. Longtime 1010 WINS Anchor Sandi Klein Dies

Former longtime 1010 WINS anchor Sandi Klein died after a lengthy battle with cancer Friday; she was 73. Most recently, Klein was hosting a podcast called “Sandi Klein’s Conversations with Creative Women.” 

“She would be on the air, and I would come in to take over and so there was that transition,” said former co-worker Larry Kanter. “We would just be chatting so much we would almost forget to do what we were supposed to do.” 

According to the station’s website, Klein spent nearly 20 years anchoring the midday/afternoon drive shift at the station, first going on air in 1993. She began her career at WKTU-FM. She went on to anchor the morning drive on WYNY and WPLJ with both Rocky Allen and later with Scott and Todd.

Klein reportedly became stricken with carcinoid syndrome which caused a variety of signs and symptoms. She entered hospice on Oct 8 and passed away on Oct. 14.

There is nothing more magic than sports play-by-play on the radio. The greats create the picture of a game so vivid that you believe you are actually there. Here are 6 problems that I am currently hearing on live sports broadcasts:

Creating the image – Radio is theater of the mind. There are basic questions that need to be answered: Who is on the left and the right of the quarterback? Where is the running back? How is the defense lined up? I know. These are basics and are often missing from broadcasts. I recently heard a broadcast where there was a last-minute touchdown for the victory. All I heard was the broadcast team screaming. I know that the team scored the crucial touchdown, but who did it? What was the story of the play? I have no idea. 

Personal Pronouns – Recently, I was driving and listening to a major college’s broadcast. In describing the team, I heard: Us, We, Them and They. This was in two sentences describing players from the same team.

Clichés – There is a professional team’s announcer who I have met. This guy can do a great job. Over time, he has added frequently unclever clichés to describe the action. It is a terrible crutch. He uses the clichés so frequently that it distracts from the action on the field. 

Homerism – While you are the Play-by-Play crew for the local favorites, do not let the excitement keep you from telling the story. Being a homer is part of the job, but do not let it detract from an amazing broadcast.

Marv Albertitis – There is only one Marv Albert. He is brilliant, unique and powerful. Keep that in mind. He is Marv Albert. Find YOUR voice. Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, Ray Scott were play by play guys from a bygone era who did things in a minimalistic manner. Vin Scully told Dan Patrick that knowing when to say nothing was important. 

Have Fun – Your team’s fans are working, escaping a family event and their team means the world to them. 

If you are a part of a sports broadcast team, you are very fortunate. It is a dream job. The easier that you make it for the listener to understand what is happening, the more value you present.
