0

The wave of alternate broadcasts continues for the start of the NBA season thanks to the latest announcement from the Los Angeles Clippers.

The team announced a new direct-to-consumer streaming platform that will offer fans six ways to watch the team’s games.

Among the service’s options is a “BallerVision” feed with live commentary from Clippers legends like Jamal Crawford, Baron Davis, and Paul Pierce. Also available is the “CourtVision” stream with graphics for real-time shot probability and statistics. Korean and Spanish-language-broadcast feeds will also be offered to those wishing to subscribe.

“We’re trying to think about: How do we transform the experience our fans can have watching the game?” said Clippers owner Steve Ballmer

The service will cost $199.99 for 74 games this season. It will also offer video-on-demand and be available to out-of-market and international Clippers fans via NBA League Pass.

Charles Barkley’s New TNT Deal Worth North of $100 Million

When the entire NBA on TNT crew signed their new 10-year deals, one in particular stood out.

Charles Barkley, who flirted with leaving the crew at the end of his contract and explored partnering with the LIV Tour, has a deal that is worth over $100 million and could be closer to $200 million.

Barkley currently has three years left on a contract that pays $10 million per season and it coincides with TNT’s deal with the NBA. If Turner does not keep rights to the league, Barkley could be allowed to work for another network or streaming service.

Keith Olbermann: How Did Tucker Carlson Never Mention Kanye West’s Anti-Semitism?

0

Much has been made about Kanye West and his recent off-the-rails interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Podcast host Keith Olbermann added criticism to the Fox News host on his Countdown With Keith Olbermann podcast Monday.

“By now — I’d guess — you’d hear that the Vice news site Motherboard got ahold of outtakes from Tucker Carlson’s interview with (Kanye) West. My first impression was ‘My god, this is one of the greatest editing jobs of all time!’,” Olbermann said.

“There’s like seven crazy things in just that one sound byte,” Olbermann added after playing the first of many outtakes from Carlson’s interview with the rapper.

Olbermann then turned his attention to Carlson, pointing out the flaws in presentation of the interview to viewers.

“Monday night, Tucker Carlson did an follow up segment on Kanye West and not once did he mention his anti-Semitic threats on Twitter.”

Olbermann continued to lament Carlson and the lack of acknowledgement of West’s anti-Semitic tweets after the interview with Carlson aired.

The embrace of West by conservatives has proven to be a divisive one, as several prominent right-wing pundits have pushed back on the idea that West embodies conservative values, namely Ben Shapiro.

Toucher and Rich Bringing Back Mike Lockhart, Paying His Salary

0

A week ago, 98.5 the Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich show spoke about the loss of their producer, Mike Lockhart, to budget cuts at Beasley media. On that show they seemed optimistic that a reunion would happen. On Monday, the show announced Lockhart would return.

Show co-host Rich Shertenlieb made the news known on the program, also noting this would be the one and only time he would broach the topic again. Shertenlieb mentioned that last week he, Fred Toucher and Jon Wallach sat down with management to plead their case for the return of Lockhart. Shertenlieb noted that management then took the notes from the meeting to their superiors at Beasley Media Group who then nixed the idea of the reunion.

“Ten minutes later I knew exactly what I had to do,” Shertenlieb said when hearing of the company’s refusal. “What followed next was four straight days of numerous meetings, hours of phone calls, dozens of emails, multiple negotiations and many a conversation that I won’t soon forget. But the bottom line is: this week, Mike Lockhart will be returning… and I will be paying his full salary. Plus the 38% markup the company charge me for administrative fees.”

“In return for the company allowing me to pay my own money to bring Mike back,” Shertenlieb continued, “I was made to sign a contract that the show was to write four articles a day for the station’s website. But that was better, much better, than some of the other things they were asking for. This is the last I’ll speak of the ways and means of this past week because quite frankly I am fried. But the bottom line is: we love Mike Lockhart. He is is a part of our team and I want him to always be a part of our team.”

CBS News Ponders Talk Radio’s Place In Divided America

0

In a piece on talk radio in America, CBS News correspondent Jim Axelrod spoke with several people involved in talk radio to discern the medium’s place in America’s current polarized and divided state.

Axelrod asked Brian Rosenwald, author of Talk Radio’s America: How an Industry Took Over a Political Party, “In 2022’s America, what’s the nature of talk radio? Is it any different than it’s been the last two or three decades?”

“If anything, Jim, I think it’s more extreme,” Rosenwald replied. The end of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 meant radio and TV broadcasters were no longer required to air both sides of hot button issues.

“And I think over that long span, it has unquestionably divided Americans,” Rosenwald said. “It has unquestionably hardened our politics.”

Rush Limbaugh launched his nationally syndicated conservative radio talk show in 1988, which spawned a genre of like-minded hosts. It’s meant that conservatives have dominated the talk radio landscape, something Talkers Magazine founder Michael Harrison noted.

“We’re facing a cultural crisis in this country. If we could have on the liberal side what we have on the conservative side, the talk radio industry would be better, free speech would be better served, and the nation would be better served.”

SuperTalk 99.7 WTN morning host Dan Mandis pushed back on the insinuation that the medium has become “too extreme”, saying it has never been extreme, and isn’t today.

WTOP’s Julia Ziegler Named ‘One To Watch’ By Radio Hall of Fame

0

WTOP Director of News and Programming Julia Ziegler has been named “One to Watch” by the Radio Hall of Fame and The Museum of Broadcast Communications.

The award was created in 2018 in honor of radio legend Art Laboe, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 97.

“I am so incredibly honored and touched to accept this award,” Ziegler said. “I feel fortunate to work for a company like Hubbard Broadcasting that puts people first and gives them the support to reach their full potential and goals. Art Laboe was a legend in this industry because of his commitment to broadcasting excellence and connecting with so many people. That is something I try to emulate every day.”

Ziegler began her career as an intern in 2002 at WTOP before rising the ranks to become the Director of News and Programming. She also has served as the station’s Digital News Director and Managing Editor of the station’s sister publication FederalNewsRadio.com.

“It is with great pride that we honor Julia Ziegler with this year’s One to Watch award,” said Radio Hall of Fame Nominating Committee Chair Dennis Green. “Julia has literally done it all at a station that is one of the most highly respected in the nation. From interning at WTOP to working her way up to Director of News and Programming while setting the station’s path in digital and social media, this recognition is well deserved. On behalf of the Radio Hall of Fame Nominating Committee, congratulations, Julia, and continued success!”

Mike Francesa: Bob Costas is ‘Driving Everybody Crazy’

0

Maybe you are excited to hear Bob Costas on the call of the ALDS featuring the Cleveland Guardians and the New York Yankees, but Mike Francesa does not share that feeling. He made his feelings on Costas very clear on the most recent edition of his podcast.

“He thinks every word is golden because he just will not shut up,” The Sports Pope said on his podcast on Monday. “Everything’s a history lesson. We don’t need a history lesson every two seconds! Everybody’s a Yankee fan, they have Yankee history, they understand Yankee history! They know it backwards and forwards! This is not a history class. It’s a baseball game.”

Francesa may be assuming a lot of the audience. Bob Costas is on the national call of the game, not the local broadcast on WFAN. There are plenty watching for whom stories of Yankees past are brand new information.

For Mike Francesa though, the verdict on Costas is simple. “He’s driving everybody crazy.”

It wasn’t all dragging. Francesa offered Costas a compliment, saying everyone knows that he is great at what he does. He also gave some advice as the Yankees get set to welcome the Guardians to the Bronx for a deciding Game 5.

“It’s a Game 5, it’s a dramatic series, it’s a dramatic fifth and deciding game,” Francesa said. “Let it breath, Bob, please. You’ve squeezed this thing for all its life. It’s almost like Bob’s been locked away somewhere just dying to talk, and now you can’t shut him up.”

TNT Signs Entire ‘Inside the NBA’ Cast To New 10-Year Contracts

1

All four members of the Inside the NBA crew have been signed to 10-year contracts by TNT.

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal have all inked extensions that will see them remain with the network for the next decade. The news of contract extensions for the entire crew comes after Barkley revealed he had secured a new contract last week. His contract extension came after a widely publicized flirtation with the controversial LIV Golf tour earlier this summer.

“We’re all a big family — Ernie, Kenny and Shaquille are brothers to me — and I wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t for them and all the amazing people who work on our show,” Barkley said in a statement. “I’m not gonna lie, though, this is a life-altering deal…and I’m blessed to be able to do live television for a living.”

The deals surpass TNT’s current contract with the NBA, which expires after the 2024-2025 season.

“Our partnership with the NBA is very important to us and this long-term agreement with the ‘Inside the NBA’ team is recognition of their significance to that relationship,” said Warner Brothers Discovery Sports CEO and Chairman Luis Silberwasser. “Inside the NBA epitomizes the creativity and innovative spirit we’ve established throughout our successful, long-standing partnership with the league.”

The show is widely regarded as the best studio show in sports, winning 17 Emmy Awards during its run.

ESPN, ABC to Simulcast Entire NBA Christmas Day Schedule

0

For the first time, ESPN and ABC will both air the entire NBA Christmas Day broadcast schedule.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this December, so the league and Disney have partnered to air all five broadcasts on both networks, which will benefit both local affiliates of ABC and ESPN’s ratings of all-day NBA action.

ABC was slated to originally broadcast the Lakers/Mavericks, Bucks/Celtics, and Grizzlies/Warriors but will now broadcast the entire schedule for the day.

With Christmas falling on Sunday, the majority of the NFL’s schedule will be played on Saturday. Only three games will be played Sunday, with one each on FOX, CBS, and NBC. ABC will broadcast five of the league’s premiere matchups for more than 12 consecutive hours.

The NBA Christmas Day schedule will begin one hour earlier than the NFL schedule, and will see the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets broadcast begin as the Sunday Night Football broadcast approaches its conclusion.

NFL Sunday Ticket Restrictions Slowing Negotiations

0

A report from CNBC claims local broadcast restrictions in the NFL Sunday Ticket package have slowed negotiations between the league and Apple, the presumptive favorite to land the package.

The report says the NFL’s broadcast deals signed last year with FOX and CBS including local exclusivity. In turn, the networks have continued to hold or have purchased stations in NFL markets to retain the exclusivity. For instance, FOX owns stations in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington D.C., which are all home to NFC teams the network owns the broadcast rights to.

Apple is also reportedly interested in owning the NFL Sunday Ticket rights outside of the U.S. Previously, the service has strictly been a U.S.-only cable product.

The NFL is seeking $2.5 billion per year for NFL Sunday Ticket rights. It also is looking to pair the service with an interest in NFL Media, which would include a stake in NFL.com, NFL Network, and NFL RedZone.

NFL Sunday Ticket is the final remaining broadcast property up for grabs for the league until 2030.
