Joe Pags Takes Several Shots at Local News Reporting

The term “fake news” became a mainstream narrative during the Trump administration. Media outlets were peppered with the term anytime a reader or politician disagreed with the reporting. 

On Tuesday, nationally syndicated radio host Joe Pags discussed how fake news is rampant as we approach the 2022 midterm elections. Pags said his background in local news has made him weary now that he’s more attentive to the national news cycle. 

“I am so jaded on local news,” Pags said. “Having been a former news anchor and having worked at one of the local news stations. When I first came to San Antonio, I was the morning guy and then I would walk down the hallway and do a TV hit every day.” 

Pags said early in his career his duties included some field reporting for WOAI-TV. 

“I really like the people, I still have a friend or two at the local CBS,” he said. “I don’t watch any of them anymore, I can’t. I used to record them and watch them every night, but I found myself yelling at the TV.” 

Pags said he believes that the people who work in local news either believe what they’re saying or have left out key details in their reporting. 

“For me, it’s insufferable to not do your job better,” Pags added. “As a journalist, you have one job. I know they have internal fights on these stations about how to cover stories, but when I was an anchor we would have arguments in the newsroom and in the meetings because we wanted to make sure we were right.” 

Pags said he has been disappointed with local news and its continued reporting on things like COVID boosters for children when there’s enough information to support the argument against children being vaccinated against COVID-19.

CBS, ESPN Have Had Media Rights Discussions With New-Look Conference USA

A lot has been reported about the media rights deals of the Power 5 conferences, but with the college conference landscape evolving, just as interesting is where the valuations of the Group of 5 conferences end up totaling.

Conference USA is one of those conferences that is losing multiple teams to the Sun Belt but is adding as well, including bringing up FCS universities that have had a lot of college football success. That conference will have nine teams for next year with another recently being approved to move up to FBS. That makes it an interesting time for the conference as their current deals with CBS, ESPN and Stadium expire this summer.

“The No. 1 thing we’ve heard from our fans in the current deal is the confusion of where and when we play, and it’s been difficult to find,” Western Kentucky Athletic Director Todd Stewart said.

Conference USA is looking to make it easier for fans to find their team’s games and that might start with consolidating the number of potential avenues of viewing. The league has had discussions with ESPN and CBS according to The Athletic. Stadium appears to still be in the running for some local broadcast content at this point.

“They want to make sure the discoverability is a key consideration to bear in mind,” said William Mao, Octagon’s senior vice president of global media rights. Octagon is handling a lot of these discussions as the league’s media rights consultant.

Chris Weidman, Former UFC Middleweight Champion, to Host New Show on SiriusXM

SiriusXM has announced the addition of a new show to their SiriusXM Fight Nation channel.

Former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman will host a new show starting on October 17 on the Fight National feed. The show, Won’t Back Down Radio with Chris Weidman will air on Mondays from 5 – 6 pm ET.

Won’t Back Down Radio with Chris Weidman will cover the latest news and events from mixed martial arts and will go beyond the octagon with guests discussing topics in sports, pop culture, entertainment and more.

“I’m excited to launch Won’t Back Down Radio with SiriusXM and have the opportunity to work alongside MMA greats like Din Thomas, Anthony Smith and hosts Ryan McKinnell and RJ Clifford,” said Weidman. “I can’t wait to talk all things MMA and connect with the fans of SiriusXM Fight Nation every week!”

Dasha Burns Defends NBC News Interview With John Fetterman

After revealing that US Senate candidate John Fetterman (D-PA) struggled to comprehend small talk conversation before their scheduled interview, NBC News correspondent Dasha Burns defended the decision to reveal that information.

Fetterman suffered a stroke in May. He is dealing with what he called an “audio processing issue”. During the interview with Burns, he utilized closed captioning to ensure he understood questioning correctly.

During her report, Burns claimed “In small talk — before the interview, without captioning — it wasn’t clear he was understanding our conversation.”

Podcaster Kara Swisher said she recently spoke to Fetterman for over an hour with no stops or aides and said “maybe this reporter is just bad at small talk”.

Burns defended herself by saying “It’s possible for two different reporters to have two different experiences w a candidate.”

She continued in a separate tweet by saying her reporting “did not and should not comment on fitness for office”.

Burns also shared a link to the entire interview with the Senate hopeful saying it’s up to voters to decide whether Fetterman is fit for office.

Eli Manning has already seen many guests on the ManningCast but he does have his eyes on a potential dream list for future participants.

Manning, speaking to The Spun, said that the main thing he wants from a guest is passion for football.

“I think it’s always fun to have people on who are really passionate about football,” Manning said.

The ManningCast has featured Kevin Hart, Charles Barkley, Pat McAfee, Jon Hamm, David Letterman and more. For the future, he was pressed for a potential dream guest. Manning replied with a pair of names that held the highest-profile job in the United States.

“A former president would be nice,” Manning began, “whether that’s [Barack] Obama or [George W.] Bush. Obviously, comedians and actors are always entertaining. When they have a personal connection to a certain team or to football, that’s when it’s fun for us. Ben Shapiro Pushes Back on Conservative Pundits Embracing Kanye West

Ben Shaprio has pushed back on conservative commentators who have widely embraced Kanye West, with Shapiro saying West’s anti-Semitism is undeniable.

West wrote on Twitter that he was “going death con 3 on Jewish people” saying “I actually can’t be anti-Semitic because black people are actually [Jewish]”. West’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were subsequently suspended.

In a tweet, Shapiro called West’s sentiments “disturbing” and “clearly anti-Semitic”.

The comments from Shaprio, who is Jewish, come after several conservative pundits embraced West before his anti-Semitic comments.

Candace Owens, who works for The Daily Wire — which Shapiro co-founded –, said “if you are an honest person, you did not think this tweet was anti-Semitic. You did not think that he wrote this tweet because he hates or wants to genocide Jewish people. This does not represent the beginning of a Holocaust. That’s if you’re an honest person, you’ll admit that, right? If you’re an honest person, when you read this tweet, you had no idea what the hell he was talking about. I had no idea, when I read this tweet, what the hell he was talking about.”

YES Network Yankees Broadcasts Viewership Up 27% From 2021

The YES Network saw a dramatic increase in its Yankees ratings from last season thanks in part to the team being good and a record-chasing pursuit by one of its players.

YES averaged 368,000 total viewers for its Yankees games in the New York DMA, a 27% year-over-year increase (290,000). That total is the network’s best for a Yankees campaign since 2011.

Yankees primetime games ranked #1 in the New York DMA on YES in total viewers for 32 of 43 consecutive games at the end of the season. Also, YES averaged at least 400,000 total viewers during forty-five of the team’s games on the network. Eleven games averaged at least 500,000 and six topped a 600,000 total viewer average.

Mark Simone: Where Is The Coverage of The Durham Report?

710 WOR midday host Mark Simone welcomed Boston radio host Howie Carr to his show Wednesday, and the pair discussed several topics pertaining to former President Donald Trump, and Simone lamented the lack of media coverage surrounding The Durham Report.

“Where is Lester Holt on this? Where is David Muir on this? It gets no coverage. What are we gonna do about that?”, Simone said. “People say to me every so often ‘What happened to the Durham? That Durham report? He never did anything’. Well he’s doing stuff. He’s indicting — he’s getting people all the time, it’s just not getting any coverage. It’s unbelievable. Where’s the media on all this? Covering any of this. Nothing about it.”

Carr then turned his attention to the lack of media attention garnered by John Fetterman’s perceived inability to do the job of a sitting Senator after recovering from a stroke earlier this year.

“Even NBC so-called News can’t cover up for Fetterman. Their reporter said she was engaging in small talk with him before the interview and he had no idea what she was saying.”

Simone lauded Carr for having “one of the best radio shows in America” before signing off.

Podcast host Kara Swisher has slammed NBC News’ Dasha Burns for her comment about Senate candidate John Fetterman’s (D-PA) inability to comprehend small talk before a recent interview.

“In small talk — before the interview, without captioning — it wasn’t clear he was understanding our conversation,” Burns said during her report.

Swisher claims she spoke with Fetterman for an hour for a recent episode of her On With Kara Swisher podcast.

Fetterman suffered a stroke earlier this year. His recovery, or lack thereof in the eyes of several conservative pundits, has been a point of contention. Swisher herself suffered a stroke in 2011.

Several other journalists pushed back on the notion that Fetterman is unable to understand basic conversation, saying they also have interviewed the potential candidate and found no issues with his motor skills.
