Will Cain Teases Sports Media Future

While Will Cain is no longer at ESPN, the co-host of FOX & Friends Weekend on FOX News still finds a way to talk about some sports on his podcast, The Will Cain Podcast on FOX News Audio. Yes, being in sports media is in the past for Cain, but he hasn’t ruled out a return.

Cain was a guest on the latest episode of the Straight Fire with Jason McInyre podcast and Cain told McIntyre that he will be back to the world of sports media in the future.

“I haven’t left the world of sports completely. Although I talk about politics primarily, I host a three times a week podcast, The Will Cain Podcast, where I address some level of sports on every episode.

“I will tell you. I will be back in sports in the future on a more concerted and calculated approach in the not-too-distant future.”

Cain still tunes in to a lot of sports content and he enjoys listening to Barstool Sports because of the joy they have just talking about sports in general.

“Now that I’m away and I’m not literally in the building on a day-to-day basis, it’s interesting how my consumption habits have changed. I consume as much sports as I ever did, but I’m not necessarily tuned in to the latest bit of punditry. Sports has returned to really what it always should be and that is it’s just fun. I think the future with a digital platform content distribution model is going to feed fans more of what they want.

“I find myself these days consuming Jersey Jerry from Barstool. I find myself more tuned to what Big Cat is saying. I find myself more interested in the guys that come at sports with nothing but joy. When I do return to sports….that’s going to be at the front of what I have to do. Fandom and joy.”

The one problem Cain sees in sports media is that he sees commentators creating content for other content creators rather than for fans and that some commentators he feels look for the approval of athletes in what they say.

“The biggest problem in sports, I knew it when I was there and I can see it now that I’m not inside the beast, is that sports has left behind the fan. We produce content for each other and Twitter has made it the worst….I just think everybody started producing content not just for other pundits, but for the athlete. I just want to be accepted, I want the athlete to think I’m cool. It became who had the right sources and who has the most correct information…It all left behind the fan. Whatever I do in the future, it will be for the fan.”

McIntyre did ask Cain about whether or not he missed being at ESPN and talking sports daily. Cain said he did, but there was one thing he missed more.

“Yes, I do….I loved my job at ESPN. I loved debating with Stephen A Smith on First Take. I loved hosting The Will Cain Show on ESPN Radio and I loved specifically being around the group of guys, my producers and my cast on The Will Cain Show everyday because it just was a group of dudes talking sports, having fun every day.”

Dan Patrick Adds Marcellus Wiley To Podcast Network

Dan Patrick’s podcast network is getting bigger and adding some star power. Marcellus Wiley’s first major media project after leaving FS1’s Speak for Yourself will be a new podcast under Patrick’s umbrella.

The show is called More To It. It will feature athletes, entertainers and business leaders telling Wiley their stories of success.

“I’m a big believer that failure is natural and success is sought and taught,” Wiley said during an appearance on Patrick’s radio show on Wednesday. “So you wake up and don’t do anything, we know you’re gonna fail at everything. But these guys, the athletes, the entertainers, the celebrities, the CEOs, influencers, they all have went down a path of success that was met with adversity, met with resistance, and they still overcame all of those obstacles. I think it is just something that can inspire us all.”

Snoop Dogg, Charles Barkley, and Deion Sanders will all be guests on future shows. Patrick noted that he has already heard an episode that Marcellus Wiley recorded with rapper Lil’ Wayne and it is excellent.

New episodes of More To It will be out every week. The Dan Patrick Podcast Network is a joint venture with Amazon. It was launched in September of 2020.

Last month, Marcellus Wiley told BSM’s Brian Noe that he is still working with FOX and will have a new TV show in the future.

Charles Barkley Gets New Contract From TNT and Warner Bros Discovery

He may have flirted with bolting to join LIV Golf, but Charles Barkley is now firmly back in the Warner Bros. Discovery fold. The company signed the Inside the NBA star to a new deal and it sounds like the company is planning to have the Hall of Famer pop up in more places than just TNT’s NBA coverage.

Kathleen Finch, Warner Bros. Discovery US Networks Group chair and chief content officer, told The Hollywood Reporter that Barkley is “a really special guy.” She did not provide details, but mentioned that the two recently had lunch together to celebrate a new contract.

“I’m excited to find other ways to put him on television talking about something other than basketball,” Finch said. “Because he has a lot to say. He’s just a regular guy interested in a lot of things. I got him excited about Celebrity IOU.”

Celebrity IOU is a show on HGTV that features celebrities rewarding people that were influential in their pre-fame lives with major home renovations.

Even before Discovery acquired Warner Bros, the company was not shy about giving Charles Barkley the opportunity to try new things. He made appearances on the first night of TNT’s NHL coverage last year. He also has made appearances on CNN, provided voices for shows on Cartoon Network and hosted a special about race relations in America.

Warner Bros. Discovery owns a long list of networks and production companies that could take advantage of Charles Barkley. Finch even mentioned that she would like to see the company tackle a scripted series set in the sports world. If he were so interested, that could be a new venture for Barkley.

While announcing a home run by Harrison Bader, New York Yankees radio announcer John Sterling dropped a line from “I’m Just Wild About Harry”, a song written in 1921 for the Broadway play Shuffle Along. Chris Mack, Colin Dunlap, and Dorin Dickerson of The Fan Morning Show couldn’t decide whether Sterling’s call was good or bad.

“If you were — right now — in say Lanny Frattare’s sports announcing class down at Waynesburg (University), and you put a demo tape together and you went and were trying to be schooled in radio or whatever, and you turned it in, and it included ‘Oh, I’m just wild about Harry’ and you worked that into one of your calls, would the professor say ‘There’s no way you can go forward with that’? Or would they say ‘I like that you’re selling this!’? Is that good or bad?”, Colin Dunlap asked.

“I think it’s good,” Dorin Dickerson replied. “I think it shows the wittiness to be able to just think of something that just flows. That flowed really well.”

“Has anyone in their life ever called Harrison Bader ‘Harry’, though?”, Chris Mack wondered. “Here’s the one thing about Sterling, though. He is always committed. 110% committed to the call.”

“It’s timely. It was written in 1921, I see here. So he’s working in pop culture. For him,” Dunlap added.

“I don’t want to be this guy, but the video I’m watching has a man dancing in blackface,” producer Adam Crowley added.

“Dorin, thoughts?”, Dunlap joked to Dickerson, an African-American. “Are you serious? And he’s referencing that? He went to that concert. He was there. He waited outside for tickets.”

“I think it was great,” Dickerson concluded.

Craig Carton: ‘Wonder What Journalistic Mob’ Thinks About Jeff Passan Tweet

ESPN MLB reporter Jeff Passan and FOX MLB analyst Ben Verlander exchanged barbs on Twitter Tuesday, and WFAN afternoon hosts Craig Carton and Evan Roberts were one of the first to discuss the development.

Passan mocked Verlander in a tweet for his love of Shohei Ohtani by criticizing Verlander’s brother, Justin, who was struggling during his start for the Astros against the Seattle Mariners.

Verlander then replied with a shot about Passan’s height, before the ESPN reporter replied “when you’re talking about Shohei, you’re usually on your knees, though, right?”

“Are you aware of a feud going on right now on Twitter between Ben Verlander and Jeff Passan?”, Evan Roberts asked.

“No, but I like and support Ben Verlander in everything he does,” Craig Carton replied.

“So Jeff Passan tweeted about 18 minutes ago as (Justin) Verlander was struggling,” Roberts replied before reading the tweets traded by the MLB personalities.

“Really? Screen grab that. Screen grab it, because ESPN is gonna make him take that down. In a minute,” Carton replied. “Really? So Jeff Passan likes to get dirty. I wonder what the journalistic mob thinks about that.”

“I mean, I love a good feud, but Jesus,” Roberts replied.

“Book Ben Verlander for the show. ASAP. Tell him he has a friend,” Carton added.

He then brought up the irony of Passan criticizing someone else for their approach, after Passan had to apologize for calling a collective bargaining agreement proposal from Major League Baseball a “shit sandwich” during the MLB lockout in March of this year.

“One might ask if he was on his knees during that coverage,” Carton quipped. “Of course, you couldn’t tell the difference because he’s not 5’9. He’s like 5’1.”

Carton has been critical of Passan in the past, saying Passan is “public enemy #1” after the ESPN Reporter took aim at WFAN’s characterization of his reporting on Mets General Manager Jared Porter’s sexual misconduct in 2021. Carton also said he believes Passan “views himself as untouchable” earlier this year.

ESPN MLB reporter Jeff Passan apologized to Fox Sports MLB analyst Ben Verlander for a tweet Passan said “crossed the line”.

Passan had jokingly tweeted “Justin Verlander” several times in the same tweet, before saying “just because I’m doing my best Ben Verlander impersonation”, he then added Shohei Ohtani’s name as many times before he ran out of characters.

Verlander replied with a screenshot of a Google search asking “how tall is Jeff Passan” and a comment that said “Grab a step stool and say it to my face Jeffey boy”. Passan responded by saying “when you’re talking about Shohei, you’re usually on your knees, though, right?”

A few hours later, Passan tweeted an apology to Verlander and said he had deleted the original tweet.

Wayne Gretzky: NHL on TNT Chemistry Came Quickly

The NHL on TNT is slated to begin its second season, and studio analyst Wayne Gretzky is looking forward to another season.

In a feature story with The Hollywood Reporter, Gretzky remarked about how quickly the studio crew gelled in 2021.

“We are used to being in the locker room and used to trying to get on the same page and pull together, and I think that is beneficial in the sense that Anson (Carter) and Biz (Paul Bissonnette) didn’t know me and I really didn’t know them, but the fact that Rick (Tocchet) and I are such good friends, they saw the banter and the relationship and debating that Rick and I have, and everybody else could kind of conform to that pretty smoothly and quickly,” The Great One said. “We aren’t going to agree on everything, but that is what makes for good TV.”

“I don’t always have all the answers, and those guys don’t hesitate to razz me a little bit, that is what makes the show fun,” Gretzky added.

The NHL on TNT begins tonight as the network will air a doubleheader featuring the Boston Bruins facing the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks playing the reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche.

Beasley Media Cuts Continue As Las Vegas News/Talk PD Exits

KDWN Program Director Steve Hoffman has departed after Beasley Media Group continues nationwide cuts.

Hoffman joined the station, as well as 102.7 KVGS, as Program Director in October of 2019. He has served as a Program Director in since 1992 in Bakersfield, San Bernardino, and Las Vegas, as well as an Assistant Program Director and Music Director in Los Angeles.

Hoffman’s departure joins several cuts to the company, as Beasley has slashed staff members in Tampa, Boston, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit in addition to Las Vegas.

The news of Hoffman’s departure comes less than a week after Beasley Media agreed to give 720 KDWN to Audacy in exchange for ALT 107.5. Billed as The Talk of Las Vegas, KDWN is the highest rated talk station in the Las Vegas market with a 2.2 Nielsen rating.

Marshawn Lynch Joining Thursday Night Football Coverage

Former All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch is joining Amazon Prime Video as part of its Thursday Night Football pre-game show.

During an appearance on the Marchand & Ourand Sports Media Podcast, Amazon Vice President of Global Sports Video Marie Donoghue shared the news.

“I think Marshawn wanted to work through some things,” Donoghue said. “We were already working with him. We never walked away. We just worked through some things with him and we’re excited. We can’t wait for him to join.”

Lynch was arrested earlier this summer in Las Vegas for driving under the influence.

The 36-year-old will appear in feature segments during the pre-game show called “N Yo’ City”, which will highlight features around each NFL city hosting Thursday Night Video. According to the podcast, Lynch will play football with kids in Chicago suburb Highland Park, which saw a mass shooting during a 4th of July parade this summer. Next week, Lynch will feed alligators in New Orleans before the Saints face the Cardinals.

It had long been rumored that Amazon Prime Video was interested in Lynch. In January, Marchand reported a deal between the two sides was a likely one.

Chad Lopez: Bernard McGuirk Entertained Millions

77 WABC Radio’s morning show sounded a bit different Tuesday as several employees traveled to pay their respects to former host Bernard McGuirk who died from prostate cancer last week. 

WABC President Chad Lopez told The Patch that McGuirk loved radio and shared his life with listeners. 

“He entertained millions across the country working with Imus in the Morning, making you laugh one moment and making you think the next.”

McGuirk began his radio career in 1986. He served as Imus’s executive producer from 1993 until 2018. He has co-hosted the morning drive on WABC since 2018. 

“His personality from day one dramatically improved the camaraderie and morale of the entire radio station,” Lopez said.

Frank Morano and owner John Catsimatidis were among those who filled in on “Bernie & Sid in The Morning.”

Host Sid Rosenberg was away at the funeral which took place in Long Beach, New York. Last week, Rosenberg said McGuirk believed in him when almost no one else did. 

“You stayed loyal and loved me when it would have been easy to run, I am beyond devastated. But I do have beautiful memories that provide me some solace as well as knowing you are no longer in pain. I will miss you & always love you,” he tweeted. 

WABC will host a special tribute show on Wednesday honoring McGuirk’s life.
