Brendan Burke On Yankees Radio Rumors: At This Point, I’m A ‘Hockey Guy’

0

New York Islanders television announcer Brendan Burke has been rumored as a potential replacement for New York Yankees announcer John Sterling when the 84-year-old some day decides to hang up his headset. Burke, however, might not be in play for the gig due to his own volition.

In a feature story with Neil Best of Newsday, Burke was asked if had to someday choose between being a baseball announcer or a hockey announcer. He gave a somewhat surprising answer.

“I think at this point, I would consider myself a hockey guy.”

The 38-year-old has seen his hockey profile grow, with national assignments from TNT added to his schedule. Burke worked 12 games on the Yankees Radio Network as one of several fill-in announcers as Sterling took extra time off during the season. Burke told Barrett Sports Media’s Peter Schwartz he enjoyed his time with the Yankees on the radio.

“It’s an awesome experience,” said Burke. “It means something to me in a sentimental way…the Yankees radio job specifically. To actually sit in that chair and call Yankees games and just call baseball…it’s something that I had a passion for and I did a long time again and haven’t done in a long time so it was great to fill some of the down months in hockey with baseball.”

Steve Doocy Has Been Listening to Mark Simone ‘For Years’

0

Fox And Friends host Steve Doocy joined The Mark Simone Show on 710 WOR Friday to discuss he and his wife’s new cookbook “The Simply Happy Cookbook”, and Doocy admitted he’s a big fan of Simone’s.

“There are all sorts of voices on the radio and on television. That’s part of the beauty of broadcasting,” Doocy said after Simone asked why MSNBC thinks anyone wants to see “four eggheads” discuss anything on Morning Joe. “Like you — your show — it’s number one in New York by a mile. I’ve been listening for years. We are such fans. My wife will quote you. I’ll come in the house and she’ll say ‘Did you hear what Mark Simone said?’ Nope, because I was leaf blowing. She’ll tell me, and I’ll say ‘That guy’s hilarious’.”

Simone asked Doocy what it’s like to now see his son, Peter, ascend to become one of the top White House reporters in the country, and the Fox News host had a sentimental response.

“Just imagine you are watching a White House briefing and the tall man, blonde man, who just asked a really tough question is the kid who used to live at the top of your stairs in your house,” Doocy said. “It’s like ‘How did that happen? How did that kid go from our house to the White House?’ But he’s a great reporter and we couldn’t be more excited for him because he is asking a lot of interesting questions that nobody else is asking.”

Will Middlebrooks ‘Takes Pride’ In NESN Opportunity

0

This season, 6-year MLB veteran Will Middlebrooks got to be a part of the NESN network doing pre and postgame shows before games and he got to be an analyst in the booth for the end of the season. Even though he may not be a household name to people outside of New England, Middlebrooks wants to share his perspective of the game to fans that may be different from others:

Middlebrooks was a guest on The Jared Carrabis Podcast this week and he said that he feels he can look at the game differently because the game didn’t come as easy to him as it did for other former big leaguers currently in the media.

“There’s something to be said and I take pride in this. I see the game differently than a lot of players that are in the media because a lot of players that are in the media are Hall-of-Famers. MLB Network, they want Hall-of-Famers or not even just Hall-of-Famers, players that had 10-15 year careers and were really good players. ESPN, they want Hall-of-Famers. FOX, TBS, they want Hall-of-Famers…I enjoy hearing what those guys have to say, but the game looked easy to them.

“I’m not going to say they didn’t grind or went through their own battles, but not like most of us. Most of us, it’s a really hard game and it beats the shit out of you for years and mentally you just crumble….I just feel like that’s what’s going to help me in being critical of players because I can explain to you why they screwed up.”

While in the booth, Middlebrooks knows his audience may not lean highly on analytics, but he knows he needs to blend in advanced stats in order to get people to come to the game so that baseball has its next generation of fans.

“It’s finding that line for this audience. You think about Boston and Red Sox fans, there’s way more 70-year-olds watching than 20-year-olds. That’s Red Sox baseball. The older you get, the more you probably love it….They want nothing to do with me talking about launch angle. They probably throw up in their mouths when I bring it up.

“But, if you want to grow the game, you need the younger generation to be those 70-year-olds one day and right now is when you kind of have to grab them. I’ll mix it in and I’ll find ways to mix it in in that old-school way.”

If Middlebrooks does more games for NESN in 2023, he will always remember the advice Dennis Eckersley gave to him in the booth and Middlebrooks called that a special moment for him and not something to take for granted.

“He was so passionate. I felt like he didn’t feel he was in the booth. We were on cam for a lot of that and they eventually went off-cam and he was still talking for a little bit. I looked over and he’s in tears. This means so much to this guy. It would be disrespectful of me to not take this seriously and not put everything I can into it if I get to do some games next year just because of how much he cares. It was cool. It was special.”

Jeremy White: Al Michaels Is A Legend, Can Say Games Stink

0

The Thursday Night Football game between the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos certainly won’t go down in history as one of the finest NFL games ever played. Amazon Prime Video announcer Al Michaels pointed that out during the broadcast, and WGR Howard and Jeremy host Jeremy White appreciated the candor.

At one point in the broadcast, Michaels asked analyst Kirk Herbstreit if a game can be so bad it’s good, which Herbstreit responded simply “no”.

“It felt like — I don’t know if you felt this way watching it — Al Michaels is like ‘I’m a legend, I can say this game is bad’,” White said. “And (Kirk) Herbstreit is not in the same mindset. Herbstreit is like ‘But it’s really important here!’ being a try-hard like ‘There’s a lot of hard play out there’.”

“You don’t hear a network guy say a game is bad that often in the National Football League, so it’s nice that he admitted it,” Joe DiBiase, filling in for Howard Simon, said. “He tried to make it sound good, but it’s nice that he actually admitted it.”

White’s comments came after he reiterated that he believes the Amazon Prime Video broadcast is the best in the NFL. White and DiBiase said Prime Video analyst Richard Sherman couldn’t hold back last night on his former teammate Russell Wilson after the analyst had taken shots at Wilson throughout the summer. The pair thought Sherman had harsh, but fair criticism of Wilson.

Boomer & Gio to SNY: ‘Do Whatever It Takes’ To Re-Sign Keith Hernandez

0

During a recent New York Mets broadcast, analyst Keith Hernandez revealed his contract with cable network SNY ended at the end of the regular season. WFAN morning hosts Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti said the network needs to do everything it can to re-sign Hernandez.

“I guess they brought up the fact that his contract is up at the end of the year,” Giannotti said. “They were talking about it on the broadcast. It’s over now! You gotta get him sowed up. If he wants to continue doing this, you can’t let a guy like that — who is as iconic as him both on the field and in the booth — go into a contract year and let it expire like this! They retired his number this year!”

“Just remember, you have to wonder about what each side wants,” Esiason countered. “Maybe Keith wants to cut back on some games but wants to be paid for more games. More money per game, I should say. You just never know what the differences may be.”

“They got plenty of money to pay Keith Hernandez,” Giannotti replied. “They are lauded as the best booth in baseball. He’s using that leverage. They got plenty of money for him.”

“They’re only paying Sal (Licata) and (Marc) Malusis like $100, so there’s plenty of money over there,” Esiason joked. “They’re tight over there at SNY. Tight, tight, tight. There’s only two hours that Carton & Roberts are on over. Whatever it takes.”

Giannotti, after saying “you pay what you gotta pay” to Hernandez added that former WFAN host Joe Benigno once told him SNY made WFAN “look like the Yankees” in terms of salary. Esiason wondered if Hernandez might be at the point in his life where only broadcasting home games and not traveling with the club on the road may interest him.

Pat McAfee Alternate Broadcast Drew 251,000 Viewers

0

ESPN and Omaha Productions debuted College Football Primetime with The Pat McAfee Show last week, and “the McAfeecast” produced well in the ratings.

251,000 viewers watched the alternate broadcast of Clemson and North Carolina State. 5 million watched the game’s regular broadcast on ABC. The 251,000 number equates to roughly five percent of the regular audience, which is a comparable number to the debut of the Manningcast for Monday Night Football a year ago. The first Manningcast saw an audience of 800,000 compared to 15.3 million viewers on ABC and ESPN.

In comparison, the KayRod Cast of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball averaged just over 200,000 viewers for its eight broadcasts, reaching a high of 336,000 during an August appearance by Derek Jeter. The previous high was 264,000 for its debut broadcast.

ESPN has scheduled the McAfeecast for five more alternate broadcasts during its remaining schedule. It’s an expansion of the relationship between ESPN and McAfee after he joined the cast of College GameDay last month.

McAfee said he felt good about the debut of the show, and feels more comfortable going forward after getting the debut under his belt.

As the Major League Baseball postseason gets underway, Twitter will offer live look-ins for every MLB playoff game.

The look-ins will be available on @MLB, @ESPN, @MLBonFOX, @BleacherReport, and @BRWalkoff.

Sarah Rosen, Head of North American Content Partnerships for Twitter, said the look-ins would “further fuel the real-time conversation” and that Twitter has been “hyper-focused on bringing real-time, premium short-form video content to Twitter”.

According to Twitter, @Yankees and @Dodgers are the two most mentioned teams throughout the regular season. Both have made the postseason. Twitter also says it saw a 45% increase in the usage of #MLBTwitter from 2021 to 2022.

The news of live look-ins being available on Twitter comes on the heels that MLB.tv experienced its most watched season in 2022, with more than 11.5 billion minutes viewed by fans.

BlazeTV Host Elijah Schaffer Fired After Sexual Assault Allegation

0

According to a report from The Daily Beast, Glenn Beck’s media company BlazeTV fired host Elijah Schaffer after he allegedly groped a colleague at the premiere of Uncle Tom II, a film Schaffer co-produced.

Late last month, BlazeTV tweeted a statement announcing Schaffer’s dismissal, saying his employment with the company had “been terminated for violating company policies and standards. In response, Schaffer tweeted “it’s been a long time coming”, saying it was “time for me to go back to being independent”.

Neither the company nor Schaffer have commented on The Daily Beast’s reporting at this time.

Schaffer and Beck had clashed previously before his ouster. In May, Schaffer said members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, of which Beck is a member, are “going to hell” because they are “not Christians”. Beck responded by asking “Assuming I’m one of the ‘many’ nice people, who the Lord has made clear to you is condemned, I just need to know if you still want a guy who is going to hell as a mentor?”

CNN Anchor Jim Sciutto ‘Expected To Return In A Few Weeks’ After Leave of Absence

0

After taking a leave of absence, CNN anchor Jim Sciutto is “expected to return in a few weeks”.

CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy reported in his Reliable Sources newsletter that network sources revealed his return is expected sooner rather than later. Noting the anchor’s absence comes after being “the subject of an internal HR probe over conduct that occurred earlier this year”.

The Daily Beast’s Confider newsletter reported earlier this week Sciutto suffered a “serious fall” in Amsterdam while returning from an assignment in Ukraine. CNN reportedly offered Sciutto a direct flight to the United States from Poland, but instead traveled through Amsterdam.

CNN reportedly directed Sciutto to address “a personal situation“.

Sciutto anchors CNN Newsroom from 9:00-11:00 AM weekdays with Poppy Harlow, until she transitions to the network’s new, yet-to-be-named morning show.
