Countdown to Coverage: Best National Radio Show

0

Well folks, we survived! We made it through a long, football-less summer. College football gave us everything we wanted in week 1 and now it is time to turn our attention to the NFL.

Arky, Demetri and Garrett are back again to highlight everything and everyone that is great when it comes to the coverage of America’s national obsession. So here is the full schedule for the NFL edition of Countdown to Coverage:

TUESDAY (9/6): Best Local Radio Show

WEDNESDAY (9/7): Best National Radio Show

THURSDAY (9/8): Best Pregame Show

FRIDAY (9/9): Best Insider

MONDAY (9/12): Best TV Broadcast Team

How do you even begin to pick a single best syndicated show for NFL talk when it is the lifeblood of all of them? What are you looking for? What separates any one of them from the field?

Knowledge helps. Entertainment value is pretty important. Being a nationally syndicated talk radio host is like having a stand at Reading Terminal in Philadelphia and trying to stand out for having a great deli selection. If everyone is trying to do the same, you have to really know what you are doing and who you are talking to if you want to make an impression.

Today, Garrett, Arky and Demetri look at the people that do just that. Who takes the same topics everyone else is talking about and creates truly can’t miss content?

THE DAN PATRICK SHOW by Garrett Searight

There aren’t many things The Dan Patrick Show takes seriously. The NFL is one of them. Todd Fritz, better known as Fritzy, is the best booker in the business, and shines during the NFL season. The Dan Patrick Show doesn’t shy away from having on a local beat reporter if a situation or story warrants it.

Also, Dan’s ability to get the best out of each and every guest is spotlighted from September through January. The stories, honesty, and candor he gets guests to speak with is virtually unrivaled. Their weekly guests, in the past, have been top notch as Mike Florio, Chris Simms, Ross Tucker, Albert Breer, and Carson Palmer all bring something different to each show that makes The Dan Patrick Show must-listen to radio during the NFL season.

THE RICH EISEN SHOW by Arky Shea

A lot is made about which programming accesses fun more readily. Honestly, you can’t make this list without it being some part of your lineup. They all do, it’s just your taste. However, when it comes to the seriousness and validity that a show has when it comes the big brand of football, it’s an easy choice for me. Rich Eisen is essentially the midwife of the NFL Network. I don’t really need to say much more about how important this league and sport is to him but I will send you this link of him talking about it recently. Before the mega-boom of the NFL, there was Eisen seeing the future.

I don’t know of a more thorough, thoughtful, driven program that is reminding you daily how king the league has become. Not because of grandstanding, but because he, Rich Eisen, is talking about the topics with you and not at you. He invites conversation and although he won’t get as shrill or even as boastful as some, I really appreciate that about a show. Eisen never had to do that and never will and can still capture your attention. The NFL is primary, but there isn’t a better national show that talks about the league on the dial or the stream.

THE PAT MCAFEE SHOW by Demetri Ravanos

All due respect to Garrett and Arky and DP and Rich, but I mean, come on. How is there any other choice? Pat and the boys balance access with fun. The show gives listeners both the players’ point of view on the stories we’re all talking about and pure joy for the sport the show covers best.

The Pat McAfee Show is the sound of controlled chaos. It is highly structured in terms of what they are going to talk about, but you never know where the conversation is going to go. Do I wish Pat and AJ Hawk asked better questions of their guests at times? Sure, but the interviews, like the rest of the show, sound nothing like anyone else in this format is providing, so who am I to demand they change?

Rece Davis: College GameDay Doesn’t Always Get Who They Want for Guest Picker

0

This weekend, College GameDay will head to Austin, Texas for a massive game between Texas and Alabama. A big question for the show will be who will come on the show as their guest picker. According to Rece Davis, it isn’t always about ESPN picking who they want.

Davis went on The Paul Finebaum Show and talked about the strategy behind selecting the show’s guest picker and how it’s more of a logistical negotiation than you might suspect.

“Because it is such a high-profile thing, you are dealing with people who are really busy and sometimes you’ll have people cancel at the last minute,” said Davis, “or you’ll have people who, ‘Yes! Yes! Yes! I want to! I want to! I love the show! I’ve always wanted to… oh, I’m sorry can I do it another week?'”

Davis said it isn’t as simple as selecting a name, making a call and putting them on the guest list.

“I think people have this idea that we pick and choose from anyone we want and it often doesn’t work out that way. People have other plans,” said the GameDay host. “For instance, I don’t know if I’m supposed to divulge names or give away anything but our number one choice for guest picker this week, great friend of the show, has been an unbelievable guest picker in the past, is not in town. Can’t do it. Can’t get there.”

Finebaum then poked Davis by saying that the guest-picker this week will be the second choice. Davis retorted with a reveal of who would have been this week’s guest picker.

“I’m just saying that I don’t know if we would have used – heck, I don’t care. I’ve already done it now and you’re a friend and I love you to death. (Matthew) McConaughey, McConaughey’s always the guy, right? He’s tremendous television. He’s a great guy and he loves Texas and he loves football and he’s been so kind to us over the years. He’s not in town.”

ESPN is extending several of its prominent NFL reporters ahead of the 2022 season.

The network announced it has re-signed Jeff Darlington, Dan Graziano, Kimberly A. Martin and Ed Werder to continue their reporting duties. They will continue to provide coverage year-round for ESPN on Sunday NFL Countdown, NFL Live, SportsCenter, Get Up and other studio programming.

“This core group of NFL reporters are some of the most valued and esteemed voices covering the NFL,” said Seth Markman, Vice President and Executive Producer. “Their connections and sources across the League are unparalleled and we are thrilled to have them back on fan’s screens – from stadiums, practice facilities and in-studio – year-round.”

Joy Taylor Says Goodbye to Colin Cowherd Before Joining FS1’s Speak

0

Tuesday is an important day for FS1 and it’s programming and one of the major pieces on that day is transitioning from one role on the network to another.

Joy Taylor is moving from The Herd with Colin Cowherd to Speak. Before she officially did so, she wanted to say goodbye to the viewers that have been seeing her work for the last three years with Cowherd.

The programming changes were reported last week, including that Taylor will join Emmanuel Acho and Lesean McCoy on the newly designed and named, Speak.

Audacy Launching NFL Show With Mike Valenti, Boomer Esiason

3

To begin his Tuesday show, 97.1 The Ticket afternoon host Mike Valenti shared details on a new show that will feature the Detroit host paired with former NFL quarterback and WFAN morning show co-host Boomer Esiason.

“I ain’t gonna be here at 5 o’clock on Thursday some weeks because I am going to do a national NFL show with Boomer Esiason in New York,” Valenti revealed. “For once, I’m not the marquee. I just get to go to work. We’re gonna have that for you Friday nights every week, every Audacy station in the country through the Super Bowl. That will debut Friday. So this Thursday, Rico and the boys will carry you through, and I’ll be getting on the big bird to go tape the damn show.”

Valenti’s co-host, Rico Beard, told Valenti he was proud of him. Valenti replied “thanks, dad”.

Valenti tried to contain his excitement, but shared this something he’s been looking forward to.

“Very excited about that. It’s basically what I was doing on here on Sundays and we finally got to go make this official and make it big.”

No details on a show name or airtime were announced by Valenti.

FOX, ESPN Leaders for New College Football Playoff Media Rights

0

The College Football Playoff will expand from four to twelves teams by 2026. With the expansion of teams, expect just as large an expansion in media rights to broadcast the games.

Bob Thompson, the former president of FOX Sports Networks, told Front Office Sports that he believes an expanded playoff could get even more money than previously thought. With the College Football Playoff attempting a Big Ten-like strategy to split up the property in order to maximize cash payout, Thompson believes the number could top $2 billion annually.

“I think it will be north of $2 billion. So ($2.2 billion) is possible,” Thompson said.

Currently, the playoff is being paid out an average of $470 million a year thru the end of the contract (2026).

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey told The Paul Finebaum Show that the CFP plans to have multiple networks bid on the deal.

FOX held the rights to several Bowl Championship Series games between 2006-09 and appear to want to make a big push for future rights.

“Certainly, Fox and ESPN are the leading contenders in the house,” said Thompson.

Greg McElroy: Pac-12 TV Deal Could Be Based On Individual Teams

0

The college football season is here, but that doesn’t mean the talk of re-alignment and media rights deals is over. Greg McElroy was on the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday. When the host asked him about re-alignment in the face of the expanded College Football Playoff, the former Alabama quarterback revealed something interesting.

“I’m not sure what the Pac-12’s deal is gonna look like. That deal’s being currently negotiated,” McElroy said. “Based on what I’ve heard, I’ve heard they may structure it in a way where every team has their own deal.”

What would that mean exactly? Other conferences have had media rights deals that allow individual teams to negotiate part of their own rights. According to what McElroy has heard though, it sounds like the Pac-12 is working on an overall deal that assigns value to individual teams.

“Let’s say ESPN for example gets the deal. They sign a deal with Oregon, they sign a deal with the Pac-12, but Oregon’s payout is different from Cal.”

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren recently said he sees his conference expanding to 20 teams, and news has linked that there is plenty of interest from some current Pac-12 members in occupying one of those last four spots. Greg McElroy, who calls games for ESPN and ABC, pointed out the interesting position this could put his employer in.

“If Oregon went to the Big Ten, ESPN would retain Oregon’s rights and get a piece of the Big Ten deal.”

McElroy was careful to mention these are just rumors that he is hearing and he has no inside knowledge of the negotiations.
