“Meet the Press” Has Heated Talk On GOP’s Mood Towards Vladimir Putin

0

Emotions ran high during an NBC “Meet the Press” panel Sunday centered on the war in Ukraine and the GOP’s attitude toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Over the last several days, pundits and commentators have been critical of former President Donald Trump and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for praising Vladimir Putin.

Sunday’s panel included host Chuck Todd, NBC News White House correspondent Kristen Welker, NBC News national security analyst Jeremy Bash, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, and Danielle Pletka of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank in Washington, D.C.

The panel discussion became heated when Todd played a clip of Trump and Pompeo referring to Putin as intelligent and capable. “The problem is not that Putin is smart, which of course he’s smart, but the real problem is that our leaders are dumb. Dumb. So dumb.”

Mitchell chimed in and suggested that Pompeo may be saying things to score political points with the far right.

“Mike Pompeo, he is so eager to get to the right of Ted Cruz and other 2024 wannabes that to embrace Putin and align himself with Trump on that just shows that he doesn’t believe it, okay, he’s a smart guy,” said Mitchell. “He’s a West Point guy.”

Pletka responded by admitting that Trump’s judgment on Putin has not been “awesome.”

“I think Mike Pompeo misspoke. I don’t think that Mike Pompeo actually cares deeply,” said Pletka.

Pletka’s comments set off several side conversations to which she replied. “Hang on. First, there are four of you and one of me. I’m the only Republican sitting here! Hang on a second.”

“We’re not Republicans or Democrats,” countered Mitchell. “We’re journalists.”

Adam Copeland To Join Tom Tolbert In Afternoons On KNBR

0

Adam Copeland gets to sleep in! KNBR announced that he will move from the early morning slot into the co-host chair in afternoon drive.

Following the exit of Rod Brooks and Larry Krueger, Copeland has been promoted to join Tom Tolbert. The new show will be called Tolbert & Copes.

Before the announcement of the new show, Copeland served as a producer on the station’s morning show Murph & Mac. He also hosted The Leadoff Spot, which started at 5 am and lead into the morning show. Fellow Murph & Mac producer Markus Bourcher will succeed him on The Leadoff Spot.

“Adam Copeland is a Bay Area native who brings his passion, energy and knowledge of our local sports landscape to afternoons with Tom Tolbert, one of the most legendary and talented Sports Talk hosts in the country,” KNBR programmer Kevin Graham said in a press release. “We congratulate Adam on this well-deserved promotion and know KNBR fans will love the match-up of Tolbert and Copes in Afternoons.”

Copeland will have a very busy Monday. He is pulling double duty. He will be on Murph & Mac in the AM hours and then return to the air for the first edition of Tolbert & Copes at 2 pm.

“Having the opportunity to host The Leadoff Spot and hang with Murph and Mac for the past four years has been a dream come true since I was 16 years old,” Adam Copeland said, “and I’m forever indebted to all the loyal listeners, callers, and guests who made the show as fun and engaging as it was. It’s been the honor of my life. I look forward to bringing that same energy and enthusiasm to afternoon drive with the legendary Tom Tolbert. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I hope to make my fellow Bay Area sports fans proud. Onward and upward.”

Larry Krueger, Rod Brooks Out At KNBR

0

Tom Tolbert was a solo act in afternoon drive on Friday. The San Francisco Chronicle reports his regular co-hosts, Larry Krueger and Rod Brooks, were let go by KNBR. John Shea, who reported the news, says that a source tells him Adam Copeland will be Tolbert’s new co-host starting this week.

The trio had been together since 2019. Brooks moved to afternoons from the station’s mid-day show. Krueger came in from mornings.

“Rod and Larry are no longer part of the show. It’s part of the business. It’s brutal. It stinks,” Tolbert said on-air Friday. “I’m going to miss those guys. I love both of them. They were both consummate professionals, both fun to be around, both with a great sense of humor, totally different with the way they did the show, but both were dedicated.”

Krueger took to Twitter on Friday to confirm that he is indeed out. He expressed no ill will towards KNBR and says he has future announcements coming.

“You just don’t know what’s going to work and what’s not going to work,” Tolbert said of the show. “You work with a couple of really talented guys, and for whatever reason, it just didn’t. … Some things click, and some things don’t.”

YouTube Demonetizes RT, Other Russian State-Owned Channels

0

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, several Russian state-owned media channels, including RT, have been demonetized by YouTube.

According to Deadline, the platform is “pausing” multiple channels’ ability to make money through advertising. Facebook’s parent company Meta has also banned Russian-owned channels from running ads.

As the war in Europe intensifies, Big Tech is under pressure to block Russian propagandist channels. Critics claim not acting like this allows misinformation to spread quickly.

“We will be significantly limiting recommendations to these channels,” a spokesperson said. “And in response to a government request, we’ve restricted access to RT and a number of other channels in Ukraine. We will continue to monitor any new developments and may take further actions.”

The online video platform has previously stated that it does not treat state-funded media channels differently when it comes to sharing ad revenue if these channels comply with the platform’s rules.

Twitter suspended all ads in both Ukraine and Russia to help ensure the visibility of public safety information.

CBS Radio Reaches Settlement in Harassment Suit by Ex-Payroll Manager

0

CBS Radio, Entercom has agreed to settle a class-action sexual harassment lawsuit brought by a former payroll manager.

According to Inside Radio, Jacquelyn Musiello, who left her position in 2017, alleged “systemic harassment” by former WCBS-FM host Dan Taylor. Musiello charged CBS Radio perpetuated an “anything goes” culture.

CBS sold its radio division to Entercom in 2017, the same year that Musiello left her position due to “physical and emotional distress.” She was reportedly seeking $10 million in damages. In the complaint, Musiello said she entered a conference room after work hours and found a pair engaging in sex.

Musiello claims that she told her boss about the incident but that the report was “laughed off.”

The suit, filed in 2020, names CBS Corp., CBS Radio, CBS Sports Radio Network, Entercom Communications (now Audacy), Dan Taylor, Margaret Marion, ABC Corporations, “John Does,” and CBS Sports Network as defendants.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed with the caveat that the order could be reopened within 30 days if the settlement is not completed. The terms of the agreement were not immediately known.

Jennifer Griffin on Ukraine Coverage: “I’m Here to Fact-Check Facts”

0

Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin has become a voice of reason for viewers tuning in to get a factual account of the war in Europe between Russia and Ukraine.

The conflict between the neighboring countries broke out last Thursday when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Griffin appeared with Howard Kurtz on “Media Buzz” Sunday to discuss her role at the network and the subsequent coverage that Fox News has provided over the last several days.

Griffin discussed how the network’s coverage leading up the conflict was made easier by the carefully sourced information she was getting and sharing.

“It’s really an interesting time to be a reporter in terms of having that level of detail and intelligence shared with us,” Griffin said.

Griffin also reacted to a Washington Post story titled “Jennifer Griffin keeps fact-checking her Fox News colleagues on Ukraine.”

“I cover the news. I’ve been part of the news division since those beginning days,” Griffin added.

“I’m here to fact-check facts because I report on facts. And my job is to try and figure out the truth as best as I know it. I share those facts internally so that our network can be more accurate. That’s what I’ve always done. There’s nothing different than what I’ve been doing for the last 26 years working for Fox.”

How Will the ManningCast And Troy Aikman Coexist At ESPN?

0

Personally, if I controlled ESPN’s money, I am not sure I would have opened the corporate checkbook to overhaul the Monday Night Football booth. Steve Levy, Brian Griese, and Louis Riddick aren’t must-see TV, but then again, no play-by-play booth is and that is okay. That isn’t really the reason the pursuit of Troy Aikman surprises me though.

What does adding Aikman to the main Monday Night Football broadcast mean to the ManningCast? It was the darling of the broadcasting world last year. Even if the ratings weren’t through the roof, the innovative alternate broadcast drew praise from fans and executives alike.

Eli Manning has been pretty clear. He and Peyton love what they are doing and are dedicated to the deal with ESPN. That doesn’t mean they want to do more than the ten games per year they are currently contracted for. If you look at it that way, the move makes sense. ESPN is strengthening their approach for every at-bat and not just relying on the home run hitters to bolster Monday Night Football.

I might argue though that part of the reason the Manningcast had the success that it did and could receive the push on every single Disney platform that it did is that the executives did not have to justify a major investment in the main booth. When it is Levy, Griese, and Riddick, three guys that were already on the network payroll, calling games, there is no hesitation about promoting a competing product that could take away even a single viewer.

We know ESPN will be on the hook for $18 million per year with Troy Aikman alone. If the network lands Al Michaels too, that will likely mean another seven-figure salary on the books. If the rumor is true and Disney is focused on getting Joe Buck out of the final year of his FOX contract to join his partner in the Monday Night Booth, that would probably be an eight-figure annual salary. If you have upwards of $25 million per year invested in your people alone, how can the network justify telling people to go to ESPN2 or ESPN+ to watch the Mannings instead?

These decisions don’t happen hastily. I am positive every decision maker at Disney, all the way up to Bob Chapek, evaluated the pros and cons of remaking ESPN’s Monday Night Football booth. I am sure plenty of strategy meetings either have or will occur to make it all work.

One strategy that could make sense is to lean even further into the MegaCast model. The ManningCast is already the most successful alternate broadcast of any sort. Do you circle those ten dates Peyton and Eli are on TV and go all out in terms of promotion? It makes the most sense. Maybe you could utilize ESPN+ to create one or two more feeds to maximize the idea that these weeks are an especially big deal.

Joe Rose and Zach Krantz talked about Aikman’s deal last week on WQAM. They made the point that if the day comes that Peyton Manning wants to move to the traditional Monday Night Football booth, ESPN would kick Troy Aikman to the curb in a second to make room.

It’s a funny point and liekly true. Here’s the thing though. That isn’t going to happen.

Peyton Manning’s owns Omaha Productions. ESPN’s deal is with the company. That gives him the opportunity to do so much more than be a color commentator. He is creating whole blocks of programming for ESPN. Disney doesn’t look at him as an analyst. It looks at him as The Mandalorian or Frozen. Peyton Manning is a franchise! Why would he give that up to call some garbage Week 11 game?

ESPN executives are going to figure out how to make this all work. There is no doubt in my mind.

Everyone at Disney knows the company has something special with the ManningCast. The fact that Jimmy Pitaro and his crew are pouring money into the primary Monday Night Football booth likely isn’t a threat to Omaha Productions. It is a sign that ESPN wants to make the Monday night game feel like an event again. In 2022, you need multiple premier, innovative presentations to accomplish a goal like that.

710 ESPN L.A. Undergoes ‘Spring Cleaning’ With Clinton Yates, Travis Rodgers

0

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, broadcasters have had to change the way in which they work. Whether by doing shows remotely and accepting the shortcomings that come with it, wearing a mask at all times in the facility, or taking frequent COVID-19 tests, the pandemic has required the industry to rethink the way it does business concurrent with stark changes in consumption trends.

Keeping oneself healthy, along with the spaces in which they work and interact with other people, has been a central focus throughout the pandemic, and radio is no exception. However, the physical space of a radio studio is not always deep-cleaned on a daily basis and can sometimes be filled with clutter and other materials that serve as an impediment to the comfort of producers and on-air talent.

Seldom is any radio broadcast space spotless – even the ones that are visible via a radio show’s simulcast on television or a streaming platform. That is something Clinton Yates of 710 ESPN Los Angeles would like to change.

With the first day of spring approximately one month away, Yates, who has been filling in this week for Allen Sliwa on Travis and Sliwa, voiced his concerns to co-host Travis Rodgers and the show producers about the cleanliness of the 710 ESPN Los Angeles studios after deep-cleaning them akin to a “spring cleaning” prior to Wednesday’s show.

“There are piles and piles of crap – headphones, pieces of paper, books, boxes, cords – and I was just like, ‘I’m sorry. This environment – I have to clean up a little – I have to tidy this bad-boy up,’” said Yates. “So yes – I deployed a little Lysol. I definitely wiped down a couple of things because I was moving stuff around.”

Rodgers then came up with the idea for a deep-cleaning and labeling session at the studios so people would know how to keep the space neat and organized. This got Yates thinking about ways he could maximize the opportunity in realizing his aspirations of maintaining a clean studio space while creating engaging content for social media.

“We should have a [session] where we come in, we organize everything and then we label it and then we have an instructional thing where we teach people, ‘This is where this stuff goes. This is all you have to do – just follow the checklist so the studio stays tidy,’” said Yates. “I would genuinely do this for a bit on social [media] if someone would join me. The full time lapse; we could detail the studio and organize things.”

After discussing trying to keep the studios clean, Yates arrived back at work Thursday morning, and with Rodgers working remotely, was immediately questioned whether he had engaged in another deep-cleaning of the space.

“I’m not in-studio, and that brings me right to kind of where I wanted to start this entire thing,” Rodgers said to open Thursday’s show. “Did you get out the power washer, the mop, what did you do because I was not in your way this morning to deep-clean the studio?”

“Since yesterday [when] I cleaned it, apparently the memo was gotten [and] nothing was added,” replied Yates. “This was a relatively clean space when I got here which is a good thing, so I’m happy about that.”

Rodgers proceeded to tell Yates that Mason and Ireland co-host Steve Mason was concerned about Yates, specifically because of the fastidious nature in which the studio was cleaned and the meticulous manner of the towel he folded. Mason called out Yates between shows for cleaning the studios, something Yates was taken aback by.

“I was like ‘Oh no. He was listening,’” said Yates. “It was embarrassing, but we’re good.”

“We are here to embarrass each other; [that’s] basically the role of these programs,” responded Rodgers.
