Sometimes Listeners Just Want Sports Radio Comfort Food

0

Recently, I was talking to a friend that is looking to make the jump from music radio into sports talk. He is a bright dude and he recognizes that if he wants to stay in radio, talking for fifteen seconds between songs isn’t where it’s at. So, he wanted to pick my brain to see if what he thought he could offer matched up with where I see the format going.

One thing he told me was that he didn’t want to do a typical show. He wanted to innovate and “push the boundaries of the format.”

When I asked what that meant, he said “No Xs and Os at all. There may be some days I don’t even talk about the local teams.”

That is where I told him to press pause. Take a breath and think about what he just said.

Then it dawned on me that this could be a pervasive problem. As we look for fresh voices and young talent, how much are we considering their motivations and visions? In an age where so many young broadcasters want to be the next Dan Le Batard or are inspired by podcasts and not traditional sports talk radio, how many otherwise talented people are being derailed by thinking about the show they want to do instead of the show their listeners want to hear?

Let me be clear. I am pro-innovation. I love Le Batard. My sports podcasts of choice are The Right Time with Bomani Jones and Shutdown Fullcast, two shows that definitely do not mirror a traditional sports talk format.

The stuff that we find boring isn’t always useless. Look, sometimes your audience just wants to hear you talk about special teams or shooting percentages. Entertainment means different things to different audiences, and a sports talk radio audience wants to hear you talk about sports.

Do you understand why interviews are important? It isn’t about what is being said. It is about piquing interest.

You’ll hear people call ratings an inexact science and act like they are some kind of mysterious puzzle that cannot be solved. That’s not false necessarily, but ratings, particularly in a PPM world, are more of a math problem than we sometimes let on.

PPM is all about appointment listening. Creating more appointments strengthens your chances to increase ratings. Interviews are the most basic of appointments in sports talk radio. Whether it is who is on or what they are talking about, interviews are a pretty tried-and-true way to create interest for staying put or checking back in with the show.

How many times have you been told to play the hits? It is one of the cardinal rules of radio regardless of format. Give the people more of what they are telling you you want to hear.

Good hosts know the right topics. Really good hosts know how to be creative with those topics. Great hosts know that there is a balance you have to find between being creative and having fun and connecting with educated sports fans.

Many of us have been in radio for a long time. Nearly all of us have been watching sports most of our lives. It makes sense that playing the hits may not excite you the way it once did.

Have you ever been to a John Mellencamp concert? He doesn’t play “Jack & Diane” the way it sounds on the radio because he has played it so many times that it bores him.

You know what else you hear at a John Mellencamp show?

A lot of people that paid for tickets complaining that “Jack & Diane” doesn’t sound right.

The hits in sports radio aren’t just the topics and teams your listeners care about. Some times it is the way those topics are presented.

Think of it this way. Do you like chicken? For the sake of this column, let’s say you do.

Chicken Cordon Bleu is great. Chicken Marsala is delicious. When chicken is prepared in a decadent way, everyone is happy. But you know what? Chicken strips make everyone pretty happy too. Do you think great chefs are jazzed to make chicken fingers?

Interviews, X and O sports talk, and other “old school” vestiges of sports radio are the audience’s comfort food. If comfort food is all you do, you’re show is going to be pretty boring. You better know how to do comfort food though, because it is part of what keeps the audience coming back.

‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ Starts 20th Season With Similar Ratings Performance

0

Weekly talk show “Real Time with Bill Maher” began its 20th season on HBO back on Jan. 21 at 10 p.m. ET. His guests included Yale University professor Timothy Snyder, podcast host Bari Weiss and Bronx congressional member Rep. Ritchie Torres. Its initial telecast drew 867,000 total viewers and 187,000 adults 25-54; including the three re-airings on HBO during the weekend of Jan. 21-23, “Real Time” combined for 1.226 million (in total) and 277,000 adults 25-54.

Its 19th season premiere fared way better, initially drawing 1.53 million total viewers; its four-telecast weekend cume of 1.97 million. However, the comparisons to that time must come along with a large caveat. Those airdates were Jan. 15-17, 2021 — less than two weeks following the insurrection at the Capitol and mere days prior to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris being sworn in to office.

The recent figures for “Real Time” were on-par with those for its end-of-season editions: for Nov. 12-14, initial telecast drew 890,000 viewers / four-airing cume of 1.21 million; and, for Nov. 19-21, initial telecast drew 760,000 viewers / four-airing cume of 1.07 million.

The Friday night original edition of “Real Time” routinely achieves HBO’s most-watched weekly single telecast mark (based on live plus same day data) for the vast majority of a calendar year. The week ending Jan. 23 was no different. The week’s runner-up HBO telecast, in total viewers: the pay cable network premiere of the Bob Odenkirk action movie “Nobody” (380,000 viewers) from Jan. 22. The week’s runner-up HBO telecast, in adults 25-54: an original episode of teen drama “Euphoria” starring Emmy winner Zendaya (134,000 adults 25-54) from Jan. 23.

Additionally, President Joe Biden commemorated his time in the White House on Jan. 19, the eve of the first anniversary of his inauguration, with a lengthy press conference detailing the issues he faced and continues to face. So many of those issues, in fact, he spent two hours fielding questions from reporters and speaking to the public.

Biden’s current overall approval numbers are at a subpar 42 percent. While the economy is recovering, rising inflation and a limited supply of goods — of course, attributed to the ongoing coronavirus and its Omicron variant — have tampered the positive vibes.

Another important factor of Americans’ critical sentiment of a sitting President, especially a Democratic one (as seen during the years of Barack Obama), is the prominence of Fox News Channel — an aspect Biden attempted to downplay during his presser. Fox’s audience continues to attract still-engaged and active voters, more likely of a conservative nature. And it propels the outlet to not only dominate the world of cable news but, in addition, the entire cable television landscape. For the entire week ending Jan. 23, that standing was no different; Fox News averaged 1.513 million viewers per minute, according to Nielsen Media Research — more than doubling its nearest cable competitor, ESPN (0.699 million) during a week where the sports outlet had aired an NFL playoff game (between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams on Jan. 17).

As for Biden’s presser, it aired from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Jan. 19. Fox News Channel was the nation’s top outlet covering it, averaging 3.78 million total viewers with 594,000 from the key 25-54 demographic. Similar to the ratings of most other news coverage in the past year, the cable news rankings had MSNBC as the distant runner-up among total viewers (1.34 million to CNN’s 1.04 million) while CNN was a distant second in adults 25-54 (188,000 to MSNBC’s 168,000). The second hour of Biden’s press conference (5-6 p.m. ET) on Fox News Channel and CNN were the most-watched hours of the week for each respective outlet in total viewers, figures listed at article’s end).

What are the Effects of Student Athletics on Academic Performance?

0

Most people argue that the academic performance of many students who participate in athletics is troubling. And it’s more discouraging as most of the students fall back to their studies to make their lives better after years of participation in various athletic sports.

In most cases, hours of preparation for the sports undoubtedly take away most of the student’s time. But still, some students participate in athletics and perform better than those that do not. Here are the effects of student athletics on academic performance.

Time management skills

Participating in athletics teaches the students the importance of time management. As the students participate in various activities, they learn how to consistently balance the busy schedules of their practice.

To excel in athletics, a lot of practice is always involved, and you have to be time conscious of getting the best out of it. With better skills in time management, students are likely to perform better in various subjects.

When dealing with assignments, they can decide which of the assignments takes a lot of time and the amount of time to allocate. They can also schedule their revision time more effectively than those that do not participate in athletics.

Most of the students who manage their time well in athletics and academics end up being successful. A good number of them have received scholarships to study in better places and train effectively in their sports. Spending a lot of time on training for the competition can exhaust part of the time set aside for studies. To get good grades, they can use custom research paper writing services where the students can receive online help with their academic assignments. The Ph.D. level writers ensure that you always get the best so that you excel both in academics and sports.

Increased ability to retain information

The amount of information that a student can retain depends on their well-being and regular involvement in physical activities. Active participation in athletics activates most of the brain processes. That’s because the students have reduced chances of suffering from health complications like systemic inflammation that affects the student’s health.

Participation in athletics increases the blood flow to the brain that supports the growth of new cells and the overall functionality of its processes. As the cells in the hippocampus grow, the students’ learning and memory capacity increase.

Lowering stress levels

Extreme levels of stress have been associated with hindering work effectiveness amongst the students. Research shows that college students who have been associated with stress always end up with poor performances and reduced quality of life. Participating in athletics is one of the benefits of sports in college; a perfect way to lower stress levels.

Getting involved in various athletics activities lowers the stress hormones. The neuro-chemicals improve the ability of the students to have a restful sleep, that’s very vital for lowering stress levels. As a result, the students can comfortably concentrate on their studies and excel quickly.

Learning to cope with failure

Most students who perform poorly in schools do not know how to handle failure. Instead of raising and working hard, most of them accept their condition, and they never get ashamed of it. Drawing conclusions from the actions of failure can be hazardous sometimes.

Not all students who participate in athletics usually win the race, but those who keep practicing win. Losing provides them with an opportunity to dissect what caused them to lose and identify the variables that need to be changed. This is also extended to academic life, and the students can deal with their failures and perform better in the oncoming exams.

Teamwork skills

Some athletics activities require the active participation of every member of the team for the students to win the race. As a result, the students learn how to handle their responsibilities and perform effectively not to fail the rest of the group members.

Sometimes excelling in academics requires a lot of teamwork amongst the students. No one has piles of knowledge on everything taught at the school. But at least each of them can better understand the disparate topics taught. With combined efforts, the students can teach each other the areas that they have difficulty with, resulting in excelling in their academics.

Conclusion

Participating in athletes has numerous benefits that are associated with academic excellence. Most of the colleges value sports in the admission process. That’s why there is a section for the students to indicate the kind of sports that they play. The field of athletes has recently expanded and has various options for male and female students to participate. The above points summarize how athletics affects the academic performance of students.

Super Bowl Statistics, Ratings, and Fun Trivia

0

Humans have always found ways to bond and stay happy with different things like music, movies, sports, etc.. Sports lovers often have a wide range of events to feast on, such as FIFA and UEFA competitions, Tennis, Basketball, and NFL, amongst others.

The Super Bowl is often regarded as the holy grail of the National Football League. It is arguably the biggest one-day event in the world of sports and sees the champions from the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference battle it out.

It pulls in high viewership from fans seeking entertainment and punters seeking profit. If you are an avid bettor, you should check out Super Bowl Odds for all the teams involved before placing your bet.

Staying informed is crucial when placing your bets, and we’ve gathered some key statistics and ratings to aid your betting adventure.

Origin

With broadcast in over 170 countries, the Super Bowl is one of the most viewed sporting events worldwide.

According to history, the first Super Bowl was played on the 15th of January 1967 – more than 40 years from the inception of the National Football League. It was created as a result of pure ambition.

A group of businessmen in 1960 reached owning football franchises but was hampered by the NFL. They branched out and created a league of their own. A rivalry was born, and both bodies would compete for players, fans, and support till they agreed to merge in 1966.

Statistics

The viewership record of the Super Bowl was set in 2015 – hitting an astronomical high of 114.4 million viewers. Also, according to Statista, the record for advertising revenue – one of the many fruits of the Super Bowls’ gigantic exposure stands at a whopping 449 million USD and was set in 2020.

Other interesting facts and stats include:

·         Most Wins: The record for most triumphs in the competition is shared between two powerhouses – New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams have won the Super Bowl six times each in their rich history. Following are the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, with five victories each, respectively.

·         Most Defeats: Wherever there is a victor, there is always a vanquished – regardless of how unfortunate that is. Holding the record for the most defeats in the Playoffs’ history are the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos. Both teams have tasted defeat five times.

·         Most Appearances: The Patriots find themselves in a unique position as they’ve appeared in the Super Bowl eleven times. Winning six and losing five – both joint record figures. Talk of bittersweet.

·         No Appearance: Contesting in this competition is a dream for every club in the league and conference. Unfortunately, it remains that; a dream for a few teams. The Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions occupy an unwanted spot as the only teams yet to participate at the Super Bowl.

·         Host Venues: The competition is played in a new venue each year, and only one team has won it on its home soil. Tampa Bay holds this record and achieved it in the Super Bowl LV.

· Roman numerals were employed to identify respective Super Bowls due to the football season stretching into two calendar years.

Ratings

After experiencing an all-time high viewership in 2015, the Super Bowl nose-dived its ratings in 2021, with just 92 million viewers tuning in to watch the event.

The contest in which Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Kansas City Chiefs had a low rating of only 38.2 percent in the U.S.

The 49ers versus Bengals game in 1982 still holds the record for ratings at 49.1 percent.

According to Sports Media Watch, the last ten contested Super Bowls rank as the all-time ten most-watched in the game, while the last eight are recorded as the eighth most-viewed programs in the history of U.S. television.

Fun Trivia

Here are some interesting facts about the Super Bowl you may never have known:

· According to history, barring Thanksgiving Sunday in the United States, the Super Bowl Sunday is the second day where the largest amount of food consumption is recorded. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as entertainment and food are very much a match made in heaven.

· Lamar Hunt – Owner of Kansas City Chiefs first suggested the name Super Bowl based on inspiration from his son’s toy, Super Ball. It would later go on to replace the initial moniker of the competition – AFL- NFL World Championship Game.

Conclusion

The Super Bowl is blessed with a rich history. It’s highly entertaining, profitable and a complete spectacle – simply put, there’s nothing quite like it.

Trevor Noah Hits Back at Joe Rogan for Remarks on Blackness

0

Talk show host and comedian Trevor Noah appeared annoyed following comments made by podcaster Joe Rogan Wednesday.

“The Daily Show” host was reacting to Rogan’s statements that were made in the fourth hour of his show on Tuesday regarding race and color.

“The Black and white thing is so strange because the shades are such a spectrum of shades of people.”

“Oh my God! I’m not Black! I’m not Black! Joe Rogan’s right! I’m like a Caramel Mocha Frappuccino,” Noah joked before running off the set, pretending to be chased by the police.

“The police said I’m Black,” Noah said with a straight face as the camera panned back to him.

Rogan’s conversation with clinical psychologist and YouTube personality Jordan Peterson also addressed the origins of Africans.

“Unless you are talking to someone who is, like, 100% African from the darkest place, where they are not wearing any clothes all day, and they have developed all of that melanin to protect themselves from the sun, even the term Black is weird,” Rogan stated.

“The things these guys seem to be ignoring is that Black people didn’t call themselves Black,” Noah said. “You understand that, right? It’s not like Black people were like, ‘We’re Black.’ No. In Africa, we have tribes; we have cultures. Zulu, Xhosa, Baganda, Igbo, Wakandans!”

Radio Host Wendy Bell Has Been Hired by Newsmax

Pennsylvania talk radio host Wendy Bell has been hired by Newsmax TV to host a new show that debuts this weekend.

“People are hungry for common sense in this country, and that’s what this new program is about,” Bell said. “Telling the truth, having great conversations, talking about what really matters.”
