How the Pathway to Radio Stardom Has Changed and How You Can Still Make It to the Top in 2025

0

Radio has always been a career of passion. Let’s be honest, radio has always been a tough career. The pay and the hours have always sucked. But this is what you want to do.

Perhaps you are a seasoned broadcaster or former radio guy or gal who has a younger person in your family who wants to join the ranks of radio people. You are wondering if there are any jobs. Is there a career path for a 20-year-old who wants to join radio? The answer simply is yes. The career path has changed, and I will share my thoughts on where we are in 2025.

If you are 19, here is how most radio careers were built before 2010: You started as a night jock on a music station. This job was frequently in an unrated market making minimum wage. You were told that you had to pay your dues. You were also told that you had to spend one year working at that first radio job. The vast majority of radio veterans started their careers on this path.

Your second job was at a bigger and better place. You made more money, but not that much more. 12 months at that station as well. If you were lucky, the third job was at a solid station in a good market. In that third job, you could spend a couple of years there and perhaps be promoted to Music Director, Production Director, or Assistant Program Director. This is how it worked.

It was not unusual for a radio person to live in five towns in four years. The skills learned were essential for your career. You learned how retail radio works, how to shake hands with listeners, and how to get calls on your show. It was important.

For the most part, those days are gone. There was something else that happened. In one of those towns, many radio people met their spouses. Sometimes these radio people met someone who didn’t want to be radio gypsies. Choices were made and some stayed at that small market station. This was how it was generally done.

Once computer automation arrived, changes in how a radio station could be staffed happened. Some of those early jobs disappeared. The traditional path started to change. Without sounding like the old guy, making mistakes and growing is part of the journey. If your first job is at a bigger station, you cannot experiment and make errors. It is not allowed.

The first jobs that evaporated were overnight jobs. My first full-time job was as an overnight board operator. Personally, my career path is closer to today’s model. I started as an intern, then a weekend board operator, and eventually a full-time board operator. After that, I became a producer for a talk show. I put in my time. I was at that station for 2 years before becoming full-time. It was another year for me to move up. I was stubborn. I was going to make it at that station no matter what.

Here is the path in 2025: Pick your format early. I always wanted to work on news/talk radio. I have been a huge fan since I was 15 years old. I also loathed the idea of playing music that I personally hated. Be a specialist.

Now, in your city or town, there are two to four radio groups. Some of these stations have very few employees in the programming department. That is ok. You can become indispensable. Even if there is not an open job, try to get a meeting with the Program Director or Operations Manager. Let them know that radio is your calling. Don’t stalk or harass them. Meet them. Ask if there is a future opening, can you be considered? Managers in radio stations want to hire people who are dedicated to their format. Watch for an open position. Apply. Follow up with a short email. Get in the door. You won’t get many hours or get rich. But you are there.

Figure out how to be essential. If the Program Director calls requesting you to work a shift, make it happen. I would always rearrange my schedule. There was no way that I would not work the requested shift or event. Your new boss will notice that you are always available. That builds trust and dependence on you. Eventually, there will be another opportunity in that building. You will be thought of first. Remember, your Program Director is very busy. They will not have time to work with you, especially at the beginning. Once you have proven that you are invested in the station, you will have juice in that building. You will be on the way to success.

Radio has never been an easy career. In many ways, radio is my mistress. It is my love. I have spent a couple of decades learning from co-workers, Program Directors, Market Managers, and Consultants. I read everything. If you want this career, take it. Make it work for you. Be enthusiastic and smile. You can do this.

Radio needs a next generation. It needs innovators. Why not you? Learn from the old heads. They have seen some stuff and understand the art. Ask questions but listen. Don’t be a pest. It’s a viable career, and the rewards outweigh the pitfalls.

How AI Can Help Your Sales Team Close More Business

0

As I was considering topics and ideas for upcoming articles, I decided to use Google for inspiration. I searched for other great articles about radio. I was immediately struck by the following result.

“Consider discussing radio’s enduring relevance in the digital age, its unique ability to connect with diverse audiences, its role in local communities, the history of radio broadcasting, and how radio adapts to new technologies, including streaming services and smart speakers.”

Wow! Even Google knows how great and important our industry is. At this point, I had a larger epiphany. What an excellent entry point for radio salespeople who are constantly bombarded with client comments about how “radio doesn’t work and no one is listening anymore.”

While you’re already well aware of this false narrative, and we’ve all been armed with the actual facts and numbers, it would be quite valuable to show these clients the truth about AI and how it recognizes and touts the true value of radio.

It was then that I asked ChatGPT to “Outline the uses of AI when creating ad campaigns and marketing plans.” It’s response…

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way brands approach creative ad campaigns and marketing plans. By leveraging AI tools and technologies, marketers can optimize every aspect of the campaign development process, from ideation and design to targeting and analytics. This not only enhances efficiency but also delivers highly personalized, data-driven results that can significantly improve brand engagement and ROI.”

Last week, during our local sales meeting, we furthered our AI research by asking ChatGPT to come up with a comprehensive marketing plan for a specific local client. As most know, a plan like this usually takes even a seasoned pro hours to create. AI spit out the plan in no time at all. Without us suggesting any specific type of media, it came up with a plan that included the following, and lo and behold, look what number 1 was:

  1. Radio Branding & Digital Audio Ads
  2. SEO & Google Business Optimization
  3. Social Media Marketing and Engagement
  4. Paid Digital Ads
  5. Mobile Marketing
  6. OTT Ads

For purposes of brevity, I left out the very detailed outline for each category above, which even included a rather specific radio schedule.  If you thought this would always turn out the same for every client – you’d be wrong.

Truth be told, we repeated the same prompt for various clients, and the results were always different. It became evident that AI looks at various sources for its algorithms, yielding strategies that are unique for each business and are based on an abundance of info it curates online.

We then proceeded to use AI to create several different ads for both radio and digital. As you are likely already aware, the creative it yields can be honed and modified based on virtually anything desired.

Our team asked it to develop three versions: funny, dramatic, and straight informational narration. They were all quite good and at least made for excellent spec spots, if not a final creation.

There are many systems you can use. Benztown has SPECai, Rumple has its own Studio, and there are numerous others jumping into this explosive market. Of course, ChatGPT, CoPilot, and Gemini are all worthy of mention.

The point is that using AI can seem frightening, and many do feel threatened, but in a world where we all must do more with less, the time savings alone has tremendous value on a local level, especially in smaller and middle markets.

Add the creative aspect to the mix, and you’re talking about more time for selling from your sales team and less stress on your production and traffic departments. As a market manager, that translates to a happier, more productive team.

The best managers examine every possible item for their arsenal, enabling them to compete in a high-stakes technology-driven industry. AI is definitely more than just a new, shiny toy for geeks.

Sarah Tourville to Lead FanDuel Sports Network Kansas City, Indiana, Midwest, SoCal, and West

0

FanDuel Sports Network has appointed Sarah Tourville as its new Executive Vice President of Team Partnerships. She will officially assume the role on March 31, shortly after the start of the MLB regular season. Tourville previously spent five years with the Kansas City Royals as Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial and Community Impact Officer. During her tenure, she oversaw revenue, corporate partnerships, media and marketing strategy, and other key business operations for the Royals.

Starting in March, Tourville will take on oversight of several regions for FanDuel Sports Network. These include markets featuring FanDuel Sports Network Kansas City, Indiana, Midwest, SoCal, and West. Additionally, she will manage partnerships with multiple professional teams, including the Indiana Pacers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis Blues.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Tourville highlighted her familiarity with the company’s mission. “Having worked closely with the FanDuel Sports Network team, I know the company is committed to innovating and enhancing team partner relationships across the portfolio, and I look forward to lending my experience to this effort,” she said.

David DeVoe, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of FanDuel Sports Network, also spoke about Tourville’s hiring. “Sarah’s expertise in building impactful partnerships and driving strategic growth as both a media and team executive brings an invaluable perspective to FanDuel Sports Network as we continue to foster dynamic relationships with our team partners and fans,” said DeVoe. “Drawing on more than twenty years of industry experience, Sarah will help us deepen our partnerships in the West, SoCal, Midwest, Kansas City, and Indiana markets while driving audience growth by offering cutting-edge sports content for fans.”

Outside of her new role with FanDuel Sports Network, Tourville serves on the boards of The St. Louis Sports Commission, The Kansas City Sports Commission, Kansas City Urban Youth Academy, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri & Kansas.

Tourville’s hiring comes just days after the company announced Steve Simpson as Executive Vice President of Team Partnerships for FanDuel Sports Network South and FanDuel Sports Network Southeast. Simpson will oversee the regional sports networks in these areas, taking over following the retirement of Jeff Genthner. In this role, he will be responsible for partnerships with teams such as the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Hurricanes, Memphis Grizzlies, and Nashville Predators.

Executive vice presidents of team partnerships will play a crucial role in advancing the strategic operations and growth efforts of FanDuel-branded RSNs, which are owned by Main Street Sports Group.

Toby Rowland: ‘T-Row in the Morning’ Show Ending After 21 Years

0

A stunning announcement came this morning as listeners of The Ref in Norman, OK, tuned in to hear that longtime radio host Toby Rowland will be stepping away after 21 years with the station. Rowland also serves as the radio play-by-play voice for University of Oklahoma football, men’s basketball, and baseball games.

This news follows Rowland’s appointment as Sports Director at News 9, the local CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City. He is set to begin his new role in July, replacing longtime sports broadcaster Dean Blevins, who announced his retirement on Monday.

On Tuesday morning, Rowland and his co-host, T.J. Perry, shared the news with their longtime audience, revealing that the show will come to an end later this year.

“As for this show, I have burned the candle at both ends before,” Rowland said. “I just can’t do that and don’t want to do that again. Getting up at five o’clock in the morning, doing a show, working all day, then doing a ten o’clock sportscast and getting in bed at midnight is just not healthy.”

T-Row in the Morning Show is the longest-running sports radio morning show in Oklahoma. Rowland and Perry have been a duo on The Ref for the last 18 years, becoming a staple in the Oklahoma sports scene.

In an emotional moment on Tuesday’s program, Rowland announced that the final show will air in June, with the exact date still to be determined.

“It is incredibly sad, and I’m going to miss it like crazy,” Rowland said. “I know a lot of people are disappointed. But if you’re going to miss it, I’m glad that means we brought some fun into your lives every morning. It’s just the way it has to be.”

There is no official word yet on how the station will adjust following Rowland’s departure, but Perry mentioned that he is also considering his future with the station.

“It’s sad. There aren’t many people who can say they had the kind of run we did, especially with one show,” Perry said. “It was a tough decision—one I had to process, too. Did I want to work with someone else? Did I want to carry the show on by myself? As I thought about it, I realized it was time to end it. I knew it was time to step away for a while. It was the right decision for me as well. Not easy, though.”

Ashley Nicole Moss is a ‘Triple Threat’ on CBS Sports HQ

0

When Ashley Nicole Moss first arrived at the CBS Sports HQ studios preparing to host Triple Threat, she informed the production team of her desire to contribute in multiple areas. As a lifelong basketball fan with a penchant for talking about the sport, she is looking to advance conversations beyond hackneyed topics, such as deliberating the argument about identifying the greatest player of all time. On the contrary, she seeks to embrace the current generation of established veterans and rising stars redefining the game, and is correspondingly penetrating beyond solely hosting the new weekly program focusing on hoops and culture.

Moss views being a host and producer as being tied in an inextricable manner as virtually being one in the same. In order to excel as a host, she considers it necessary to perceive the flow of the show, and it is something that she is doing in real time. As someone who has a natural inclination to take initiative and exhibit an indefatigable work ethic, Moss is appreciative of her colleagues respecting the insights she brings to the creative process and being genuine in agreeing or countering given proposals.

“I think just the combination of all of that makes for a show that’s really, really well produced because you have a just crockpot of ideas coming together and nobody’s afraid to speak their opinion, and you just need a team like that,” Moss said. “Nobody needs a team of ‘Yes’ people, and we definitely don’t have that at Triple Threat.”

Moss started hosting episodes of the program last month on CBS Sports Network and on the CBS Sports YouTube page, commensurate with her one-year anniversary working with CBS Sports HQ. While being hired by the media conglomerate, she was told that they wanted her to unapologetically be herself, remaining true to her personality and embracing the license to deviate from any putative archetypes. Additionally, Moss was immediately granted a platform for analysis and showcased her proficiency surrounding the game and versatility to fulfill multiple obligations.

“I’m constantly getting better at it, and I have opinions about it and I stand in my opinions,” Moss said. “And I can also host, I can also do an interview, but I also have my own thoughts and opinions, and they have really embraced not only me sharing those, but also embrace me doing it with my own flair, my own personality and my own untraditional methods sometimes.”

Taking the air with panache and poise, Moss offers more than highlights from recent matchups or inside information about transactions and injuries. With an avidity for social media and digital platforms, she stays keen towards off-court matters that tie into the game, such as arrival outfits, basketball sneakers and pickup games at parks around the country. As someone who grew up around New York City and watched basketball from the illustrious courts at Dyckman and West Fourth Street, she looks to continue carrying her passion for the game.

“Culture has always been part of basketball,” Moss said. “It is just people who have chosen to dilute it that have made the two separate, but they’re not. They’re very much a pair, and if you listen to just the true makeup of what the sport is, it’s everywhere and it’s very easy to intertwine the two.”

Moss utilizes social media platforms in preparing for episodes of Triple Threat for CBS Sports Network, evincing the nature of the conversations and potential pushback from fans. On top of that, she watches several basketball games at once with multi-screen television views, reads many articles and also reviews game charts after contests. Moss is enthusiastic about the growth of her program on CBS Sports Network, but she also parses other shows around the industry to observe how they go about their presentation and execution to facilitate avenues of potential development.

“It’s a plethora of things – it’s a constant learning course,” Moss said. “It’s constantly something that I’m educating myself on trying to get better at, not only as a host, not only as a sometimes producer, but as an analyst, and I want to continue to evolve and to grow, and in order to do that, you have to constantly learn.”

Although Triple Threat broaches critical topics in basketball with significant implications, Moss is cognizant about how to differentiate between a serious tone and exhibiting lighthearted repartee and mirth. As a host, she intends to bring a conversational approach to the show while remaining relatable and not abandoning her own persona. Throughout her broadcasting career, she has received auspicious feedback from industry professionals and consumers surrounding the relatability she exhibits, and it is something that safeguards from forsaking entirely.

“My hosting style is just a more polished version of the conversations that I have with my friends when it comes to sports,” Moss said. “It’s a little bit more polished – just a tad, not too much. It’s a little bit less lax, but I like to think of myself always and forever as a New York girl with a mic, and that’s really what it is.”

The show has utilized a rotating panel of basketball luminaries contributing to the discussions, some of whom have included Chris Walker, Evan Turner and Brad Botkin. Moss and her colleagues are still trying to determine the full rotation, but she is navigating the challenge of learning different personalities and aligning analysts for success with aplomb. Moss is familiar with the expertise of those appearing on the show and offering ideas for pairings that could adequately address certain topics.

“You know, ‘This person’s a LeBron stan. Okay, this show is heavy LeBron – we got to bring him in. And this person is more contentious in their opinion, so this is going to work really well against the person who’s this pro-LeBron,’” Moss explained. “….So it’s about knowing your panelists, knowing the topics or topic of the show and kind of being a little bit of a mad scientist and piecing those together and seeing what’s going to give you the best reaction.”

With multiple voices and perspectives on Triple Threat, Moss functions in an implicitly multifaceted role by guiding the conversation, conveying her thoughts and determining what will interest the audience. The difficulty in this undertaking can be in discovering intervals to enter a conversation without it being forced, but there are also instances where she takes command of the room and will occasionally cut people off. In the end, Moss is simultaneously balancing the triumvirate of outlooks in being a host, analyst and producer, encompassing the show title and ignoring traditional, divergent boundaries.

“You always give your guest the floor, and then if you see maybe it’s going on a little long or they’re starting to repeat or you have something that will add to this debate, you just find a way to cut in and add from there,” Moss said. “So it’s always a learning curve with new people, but I think the general rule is you got to take your pockets where you can take them and just let the conversation flow how it flows.”

Moss became more involved with NBA coverage through Sports Illustrated as the host of Laces Out, a digital program that examined trending topics and sneaker culture surrounding basketball. Over the years, she has also hosted several different podcasts, some of which include I Am Athlete on SiriusXM and We Need to Talk NOW with CBS Sports. Working on content in the on-demand format has yielded her a more direct line to effectively discern what appeals to consumers, along with gauging overall interest and identifying areas for future growth.

“I think that if you are really tuned into social media, it helps you figure out what the fans are talking about and what they’re interested in,” Moss said, “and for me, as someone who has really used that tool to help my career, I’ve always had a finger on the pulse of NBA Twitter or just sports Twitter in general.”

Most of the process in launching Triple Threat took about a month, and it was built on an aligned objective with minimal contention. Planning the debut of the show amid the proverbial dead period between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, she acknowledges the collaboration and teamwork involved in substantiating an idea into reality. While there are difficulties in not being a league rightsholder surrounding footage and highlights, Moss also views the arrangement as an advantage in being more honest and transparent, along with something that encourages creativity in fostering compelling content.

“We all shared the same vision, and I also have to give credit to CBS,” Moss said. “They trust my vision and they trust my voice and they trust my ability to lead this show, have vision for this show that will ultimately make it successful, so all the way around, I wish I can take all the credit, but it was a team effort, and our team is amazing.”

Nonetheless, Moss is not satisfied and aspires for the program to have a large studio setup and become a daily destination for basketball fans. Moreover, she hopes to win an Emmy award while with the network and continue witnessing a flourishing fanbase excited about the project. Even though Triple Threat is a new addition within a media ecosystem containing various networks and platforms competing for coveted shares of attention, she remains optimistic about the future and hopes to continue covering the league throughout the year with an insatiable appetite to climb towards another level with no end in sight.

“I want more,” Moss said. “I’m somebody who is overly ambitious and overly hungry, and once I complete one thing, I’m already thinking about the next thing. I’m already thinking about how I can make that next thing happen.”
