69% of All News Audio Content Consumed on AM/FM Radio, New Edison Research Data Shows

0

In recent years, the way to consume audio content has changed drastically. But in the news world, AM/FM Radio reigns supreme, according to new data from Edison Research.

In the news category, 69% of all time spent listening to news audio content in the United States is with AM/FM radio and its streaming platforms. In the talk/personalities category, that figure is 32%.

Elsewhere, 61% of sports audio listening takes place on AM/FM radio and streaming from those stations. 32% of all music time spent listening happens with terrestrial radio and streaming platforms from those brands.

The Edison Share of Ear study also shows that podcasting has taken the lead in the talk category, while music consumption remains scattered across several different avenues.

The new, never-before-released data is the first update of the year from Edison Research.

ESPN ‘Monday Night Countdown’ Averages 1.34 Million Viewers Per Episode in 2024 NFL Regular Season

0

ESPN recently attained its second most-watched season of Monday Night Football in 24 years, averaging 15 million viewers per game on linear television and reaching 112 million fans. On top of that, the 10-episode regular-season slate of Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli averaged 1 million viewers per episode, marking the fourth consecutive year it has attained this threshold. Concurrent with the viewership success of live game broadcast feeds, ESPN NFL studio programming also had a strong year that was led by Monday Night Countdown averaging 1.34 million viewers per episode.

The Monday Night Countdown program broadcast from the studio and traveled on the road throughout the season, garnering a 5% year-over-year improvement in average viewership. This was the first season under the current cast of the program, which includes host Scott Van Pelt with analysts Ryan Clark, Jason Kelce and Marcus Spears. Michelle Beisner-Buck and Adam Schefter contributed to the program throughout the year as well with comprehensive storytelling and breaking news.

The program bolstered its viewership in multiple demographics, increasing 16% among women and 7% among Persons 2-17. The Week 17 broadcast of the show ahead of the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers game emanated live from Santa Clara, Calif. outside Levi’s Stadium and averaged 2.4 million viewers, its most-watched episode since 2016.

ESPN had additional success with Sunday NFL Countdown, celebrating its 40th season on the air with Mike Greenberg hosting in his first year. The program averaged 1.2 million viewers per episode, down 10% year-over-year after achieving its most-watched regular season since 2019. Average viewership for the program was up from the 2020 and 2021 seasons as it led viewers into the Sunday afternoon slate of games.

Broadcasting during the week from 4 to 5 p.m. EST, NFL Live averaged 381,000 viewers per show in the NFL season. The show was down by 6.15% from its average of 406,000 viewers last season, but it surpassed viewership in 2019 before the show was revamped with its current cast, consisting of Laura Rutledge, Dan Orlovsky, Marcus Spears, Mina Kimes and Ryan Clark.

The Saturday NFL Matchup program on ESPN averaged 313,000 viewers, which represented a year-over-year increase in the similar day and timeslot in 2023. Moreover, NFL Primetime with Chris Berman and Booger McFarland continued its stretch as the most-watched original studio program on ESPN+ during the season.

Caleb Pressley Departs Barstool Sports, Plots Own Production Company

0

Barstool Sports host Caleb Pressley is leaving the digital media outlet to strike out on his own with the help of Tom Brady’s agency for his Sundae Conversation series.

Pressley announced on social media that he is closing the Barstool Sports chapter of his professional career in an effort to go independent.

In a separate video, Glenny Balls — the Barstool Sports personality who frequently joins Pressley for the conversations with prominent figures — announced he will also exit the digital media company founded by Dave Portnoy and join the new venture with Pressley.

He’ll now produce and distribute all of his content through a recently launched company named Bill Joe Productions in honor of his father.

That new production company will work with Shadow Lion, the creative agency formed by former NFL star Tom Brady, for sales and production of his popular series.

“In today’s dynamic media world, Caleb stands out as an unparalleled talent. We’re thrilled to partner with him and Bill Joe Productions to take Sundae Conversation to new heights, while collaborating on new, bold ideas that push creative boundaries,” said Shadow Lion co-founder Gilad Haas.

The Sundae Conversations — a play on the former SportsCenter segment — has been a popular one for Caleb Pressley and Glenny Balls. The short-form interviews frequently feature Pressley asking humorous questions to his interview subjects or asking questions that intend to back his subject into a corner to say something newsworthy while his co-host eats an ice cream sundae. Individual episodes often reach more than 10 million views on YouTube.

Carter-Williams will be appearing on the ACC Network basketball program, Nothing But Net, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the ACC men’s basketball season. Carter-Williams played under former Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim for two seasons at Syracuse, and he will now be his colleague at ESPN. Carter-Williams proceeded to be selected 11th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2013 NBA Draft and was named NBA Rookie of the Year in the ensuing season. This past October, Carter-Williams announced his retirement from the NBA, spending nine years in the league with the 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic.

“Michael adds instant credibility to our already deep and talented lineup of ACCN men’s hoops studio analysts,” Alex Farmartino, vice president of production for ACC Network, said in a statement. “He is a Syracuse legend after what he accomplished under Coach Boeheim, and we’re excited for him to start his media career with us at ACCN.”

ESPN’s Dick Vitale Reports Vocal Cords Are Cancer-Free & Can Return to Broadcasts

0

One of ESPN’s most beloved personalities has good news to report about a concerning situation. Dick Vitale, one of ESPN’s longtime college basketball voices, reported today that his vocal cords are officially cancer-free, and he’s been approved by all parties to return to the sidelines. Vitale reported the news via his X account:

Vitale’s most recent cancer fight has gone on since June, when he announced he was battling a cancerous lymph node in his neck. Fortunately, Vitale reported in December that he was again cancer-free. Now, Vitale has stayed cancer-free and looks to get back to the sidelines. He posted a full video of his diagnosis to his Facebook:

“The cancer that we treated is completely resolved,” said Dr. Steve Zeitels, Vitale’s laryngeal doctor. “[But] we’re gonna have to restrict some of your activity when you do the games.”

Zeitels says that the surgery he performed on Vitale was the largest-scale operation he’s done using his method of treating vocal cord cancer, and it’d never been done with someone who went through radiation treatment.

Vitale then reveals that his boss at ESPN approved his return to the sidelines, although there isn’t a timetable for when he will return. He then signed off on the video as only Dickie V could.

“I can’t wait [to get back],” Vitale said. “I owe [Zeitels] everything, he’s awesome, baby.”
