Boomer Esiason has been at WFAN long enough and had enough success to be considered one of the station’s legends. That is why he and his Boomer & Gio castmates were shocked that former program director Mark Chernoff left them off of a list of the great talent he worked with at the station.
Chernoff was interviewed by Niel Best of Newsday for a column and video that came out on Monday. In it, Chernoff listed a series of current and former stars he either worked with at WFAN or brought to the station. In the list, he mentioned Evan Roberts twice and Craig Carton four times. It was something Esiason and Gregg Giannotti noticed and took exception to.
After a series of Esiason’s tongue-in-cheek complaints and Gio’s impressions of Chernoff, the former boss called in to defend himself Tuesday morning.
“I hate you,” Boomer said after Chernoff wished him a good morning.
Mark Chernoff said he was sorry that Boomer’s name did not come up more in the column. He assured the former quarterback that he did talk to Niel Best about the success of the morning show before they started recording.
“I don’t want my name ever coming out of your mouth again,” Esiason shot back.
Before he hung up, Mark Chernoff said that he was enjoying his work with 107.1 The Boss, where he is now the sports anchor on the station’s morning show and covering select swing shifts. He said that it has been like going back to the early days of his career.
Giannotti asked how the bosses at the New Jersey station reacted to Boomer & Gio playing his sports updates and reacting to them on air. He wondered if anyone there was upset.
“No,” Chernoff said. “It’s great publicity for 107.1 The Boss.”
