A pair of recent media missteps by Pete Rose and Keith Hernandez caught the attention of WIP’s Angelo Cataldi.
“We always love to tell people that ‘Man, back in the day those guys were so much smarter and classier’ and all this stuff. And now we’ve got two guys from the era of the 1970s and 80s who made complete asses out of themselves.
“Every once in awhile they bring somebody into the booth. They know before they put him in the booth with the regular announcer whether the guy’s a smacked ass, don’t they? Do you have any idea what NBC Sports was thinking? Because we all give way more credit to previous generations for being way better representatives of humanity.”
Cataldi then played a clip of Rose at a press conference being asked about his past sexual encounters with a woman who claims she was 14 during the acts with Rose, who contends she was 16. Rose told the reporter “it was 55 years ago, babe”.
“Hold on, we have to stop there. Sorry to cut this short, we’re putting him in the booth in front of a live mic for an inning,” Cataldi joked. “He was so bad in the inning, when NBC Sports Philadelphia did the replay, there was no sixth inning. They just removed the entire inning. These old time guys, they’re way overrated.”
Cataldi, who recently joined the Phillies radio booth for an inning, then turned his attention to SNY’s Keith Hernandez, who recently said he didn’t want to do games in Philadelphia any longer due to the Phillies lack of fundamentals and defense.
“This jackass comes out and talks about how he doesn’t wanna do the Phillies games because they don’t play the game the right way?”
Jon Jastremski, who was a guest on the show and also works at SNY, told Cataldi “that was just Keith being Keith”.
“Keith being Keith is fine, but it’s not like he had a pure record of his own as a player,” Cataldi argued as his volume began to rise. “Don’t be doing that stuff about players doing things the right way with your past. He’s got his own problems. He’s going to St. Louis to be honored and he was suspended for a year for copious use of cocaine. Jon Jastremski! Don’t be putting the higher ground when you’re Keith Hernandez when you’ve got your own problems!”
