News broke Monday that after originally deciding to take time off throughout the remainder of the season, New York Yankees radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling would announce every game through the end of the season. The decision comes on the heels of Aaron Judge’s race to set the Yankees single-season home run record, and WFAN midday host Brandon Tierney applauded the decision.
“We talked about this last week — we brought it up — about when is Judge gonna do it? John’s (Sterling) not gonna go to Toronto,” Tiereny said. “I saw (Andrew) Marchand had a tweet about an hour ago that (Sterling’s) in for the rest of the season.”
“No surprise,” co-host Tiki Barber said.
“I’m sure that’s just a formality,” Tierney said. “I’m sure Ryan (Ruocco) graciously stepped aside. I also know that John and his ego wanted be in the booth and I don’t blame him. I really don’t! So that’s awesome.”
Ruocco was previously scheduled to announce the Yankees road trip for Sterling, who had admitted he hates announcing games on the road. Ruocco has split fill-in duties with New York Islanders voice Brendan Burke.
The Tiki & Tiereney hosts continued by discussing the status of Judge’s race to win the triple crown, calling Sterling’s decision to announce the rest of the season a no-brainer.
