Miami Dolphins Planning To Leave WQAM

According to a report from The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, WQAM executives have begun telling employees the station expects to lose the broadcast rights of the Miami Dolphins after the current season ends.

Jackson says it is all but a formality that the team will move its radio broadcasts to the iHeartMedia cluster in South Florida, which includes Newsradio 610 WIOD and Fox Sports 940, as options to air the games. It is expected to be a five-year contract between the team and broadcaster.

Current Dolphins play-by-play announcer Jimmy Cefalo hosts South Florida’s First News on WIOD. Analyst Joe Rose hosts The Joe Rose Show with Zach Krantz each morning on WQAM.

WQAM has served as the home for the Dolphins since 2016. It has been an off again, on again relationship between the station and franchise. WQAM also held the rights from 2002-2004 and again from 2007-2009. 610 WIOD was the team’s radio home from 1966 until 2001. It also aired games on Fox Sports 940 from 2010-2015.

The Audacy-owned WQAM recently announced an agreement to be the flagship home of the Miami Heat before ceasing operations of sister station 790 The Ticket.

  1. That is awful to do to the Dolphins. I like to hear them up here in Melbourne Florida that is. My favorite team without a doubt. This won’t be published
