Even before the game was halted and eventually cancelled, things were different for Buffalo Bills fans on Monday night. John Murphy was not on the radio call of the game. That day, a Bills spokesman explained the absence by saying Murphy was “under the weather.”
On Friday, the team put out a statement from the Murphy family revealing that John suffered a stroke last weekend. He is now recovering at home.
“John and the Murphy family are grateful for the excellent care by the staff and doctors at Buffalo General Medical Center,” the statement reads. “We appreciate everyone’s support.”
Chris Brown, the co-host of WGR 550’s One Bills Live, stepped in to call the game on Monday. He will be back on the network this Sunday as the Bills host the New England Patriots.
“We look forward to having John back in the booth as soon as possible,” the team tweeted on Friday. “Get well soon, John!”
John Murphy is 67 years old. He has been the voice of the Buffalo Bills since 2004.
