No American sports franchise has had more success than the New York Yankees. Like the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Lakers, the franchise elicits strong reactions – both positive and negative – from the public. It seems like a smart move by ESPN to build a special around the team. That is exactly what the network is doing.
ESPN Films and Major League Baseball are partnering on an eight-part documentary called The Yankees Win. It will bring together never-before-seen footage and candid interviews with players, coaches, executives, fans, and media members to tell the entire story of the New York Yankees.
There is some serious star power behind the project, too. JJ Abrams, Connor Schell, and Libby Geist are among the series’ producers. Jonathan Hock, who has been a go-to for ESPN’s 30 for 30 films, will serve as director.
During the pandemic, ESPN learned the power of compelling, multi-part documentaries. With no live sports on, The Last Dance became must-see TV for fans. The network has followed it up with Man in the Arena, which focused on Tom Brady, and The Captain, which focused on Derek Jeter.
In a press release, ESPN noted that more details, including a release date for The Yankees Win, will be coming soon.
