After promising to take away the blue “Verified” check marks from Twitter users on April 1st, the social media platform actually went through with its promise yesterday. The move was enough for The Michael Kay Show’s Don La Greca to admit it was time to move on from the platform.
The 98.7 ESPN New York host said Thursday that the move from Twitter was the last straw and that he would let his 113,000 followers know where he would be heading in the future.
“This is probably it for me,” La Greca said. “I’m gonna say goodbye and go to Instagram. I’ll make my official decision tomorrow and announce it on the air. I think the people that follow me on Twitter will wanna know where I’m gonna go. It’s not about my ego or the blue check. It’s about verification. That’s what it was supposed to be about.
“It wasn’t about ‘Oh, I can pay someone $8, and I’ll get the blue check. That blue check was supposed to allow the world to know that Don La Greca is Don La Greca. Now, by anybody paying $8, anybody can claim to be me, and no one will really know it’s me until they click on my profile and see my followers, and who knows where that’s gonna go in the future. I don’t feel comfortable with it. I don’t. I really think that it might be time.”
Co-host Peter Rosenberg shared La Greca’s sentiments and said he admired La Greca because he “wants out”, and believes it’s a great excuse to do it, but he will probably continue to use the social media platform.
La Greca isn’t the only sports radio host to share that Twitter their problems with the lack of verification. FOX Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb called the new blue checkmark “worthless” during his radio show Thursday.
