CNN’s Christiane Amanpour disapproved of her network’s decision to host a town-hall event with Donald Trump last week. She shared that she engaged in a spirited and vigorous discussion with Chris Licht, the chief executive who faced scrutiny for approving and subsequently defending the choice to organize the event. On Thursday, Clay Travis & Buck Sexton defended Chris Licht’s decision to have Trump on the network during a town hall moderated by Kaitlin Collins.
The duo commented on the issue on the nationally syndicated Clay & Buck Show.
“I have to stand up for Chris Licht on this one,” said Sexton. “What is the alternative? To all of the CNN snowflakes and the pearl-clutching, give me a break. What you see is this is the hangover of what CNN did to its audience throughout the Trump presidency, which is just creating this silo of anti-Trump lunacy.”
Sexton said that if CNN wants to be recognized as a news network reporting on a presidential election, it cannot claim to be one while denying newsmakers the opportunity to appear on their broadcasts.
“I just think it’s kind of funny whether it’s Anderson Cooper who said, ‘I don’t blame you if you never watch us again’ How can they claim to be a news network if you’re not going to have Trump on?”
Travis said that the backlash from Trump’s town hall will intensify if he earns the GOP’s nomination for president in 2024.
“The CNN’s of the world, the MSNBC’s of the world, they’re all going to take a step back, and they are going to say we’re not even going to cover Donald Trump and to a large extent his lies because in platforming him we are elevating his popularity.”
