It was not a surprise that the first presidential debate of the 2024 election season achieved blockbuster ratings. But the fact that this Aug. 23 event on Fox News still managed to do so without GOP frontrunner Donald Trump was impressive. According to Nielsen Media Research, it drew a combined 13 million viewers across Fox News Channel (FNC), Fox Business Network (FBN), Fox Nation and Fox News Digital — their digital properties drove an average minute audience of nearly 200,000 between 9-11 PM/ET, marking the platform’s highest day of minutes watched on the Fox News livestream this year.
The debate, held at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee and was co-moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, was the most-watched non-sports telecast on cable of 2023, to date. In addition, only the Denver Nuggets’ series-clinching victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals (13.08 million) topped the debate for the largest audience for a scheduled prime time event since the Academy Awards back in March.
Although it was far less than the 24 million who watched the first presidential debate on FNC in August 2015 (which first featured Donald Trump as a candidate), the Aug. 23 debate topped more than 70 percent of all presidential primary debates in the last two cycles (2016 and 2020), including FNC’s Iowa debate in January 2016 sans Trump (12.5 million).
While the debate was being held, Tucker Carlson’s 46-minute interview with Trump was posted on X/Twitter. Figures for views on the social media platform are vastly different from Nielsen’s tabulations. Their current main indicators are something called post views which track impressions and reach that each post attracts.
But the numbers of those who actually watched the video of the interview are unclear. Still, here is some impression data for it tracked throughout that night, as it has accrued the most total impressions for a Carlson episode on his X/Twitter account, to date.

FNC was not the sole cable news outlet to see an uptick for this week, for on Aug. 24 was the day Trump got booked on charges in Fulton County in Georgia. Ten days prior, a grand jury in Georgia returned ten indictments in the probe into Trump’s efforts to overturn that state’s 2020 election results.

In a reversal to the overall slight waning trend of coverage viewership from the early summer, MSNBC scored their largest figures in prime time on a Trump arraignment date. FNC and CNN each performed their respective best prime times since Trump’s first arraignment in April.
Following his mug shot, Trump appeared as a guest on a special 90-minute edition of Newsmax’s “Greg Kelly Reports.” The show drew 966,000 total viewers including approximately 85,000 within the key 25-54 demographic. Comparatively, within the first month of the post-Carlson era at FNC, “Greg Kelly Reports” averaged 336,000 viewers and 42,000 adults 25-54 (for weeknights Apr. 24-May 26, 2023).
